Visioneer's OneTouch 9320 offers superhigh, 6,400x3,200dpi optical resolution at an affordable price. However, although it produced decent scans of photos and graphics, they weren't as great as those of some of its lower-resolution competitors. This scanner is OK for everyday home or office use, but HP's Scanjet 3970 is a better choice for high-end scanning.

The OneTouch 9320 has a sturdy, solid design that still manages to look good. The brushed-silver lid contrasts nicely against the solid-black base, from which a curved lip protrudes with five, one-touch buttons: one each for color-page scanning, e-mailing, optical-character-recognition (text) scanning, copying (printing), and photo scanning. The scanner lid also has an incorporated transparency adapter for slides and 35mm film, and a separate mask (a black plastic sheet with a cut-out square holder) for positioning the slides and the film. Unlike other scanners we've seen, the OneTouch 9320 has hinges along its longest side, which we think makes for more convenient document loading, but it also requires a desktop setup that uses slightly more space.

Setting up the OneTouch 9320 is a snap: simply connect the separate power and USB cords, and it's ready to go. Installation is also straightforward, and we like that you can install the software extras at a later time. The extras include Internet Explorer 6 and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0, two apps that most people have already, and ArcSoft PhotoImpression 3.0. All in all, we were not awestruck by the software package. It's a little annoying, too, that you are forced to register your scanner before you can complete the driver installation; we'd rather have the option to do this at our leisure.

Images scanned during our test of the OneTouch 9320 appeared decent when viewed on our 19-inch Samsung SyncMaster 957MB flat-screen CRT. Colors matched up nicely with the originals, but there was a little noise across the entire image, causing parts of color graphics and photos to look a bit grainy, and making small text look fuzzy around the edges.
