When CNET reviewed the OneTouch 8600, we were impressed with its speed and ease of use. Now Visioneer has made a good thing even better with the OneTouch 8650. The scanner delivers comparable speed and quality to the 8600, and it comes with an automatic document feeder (ADF), adding to an already impressive list of conveniences.

Scanning at Your Fingertips
Like its close relative, the 8650 features one-touch scanning. The unit's faceplate has a series of buttons that are preconfigured for different scanning functions: Scan, Copy/Print, Fax, OCR, Email, and Custom. Each button triggers scripts that deliver your scan to the appropriate software on your system, and all (not just the Custom) can be reprogrammed.

Once the scanner is installed, an icon for the 8650 appears in the Windows toolbar, giving you one-click access to its driver. With a few clicks, you can associate one of the scanner's buttons to an application; you can also establish the scan settings and format for each button. (All these features also come with the 8600.)

So What's New?
The only feature that sets the 8650 apart from the 8600 is the ADF, which is simply a specialized document cover with a copier-style feeder that can hold up to 50 sheets. Drop your documents in faceup and you're off and scanning--almost. In order to use the ADF with the one-touch buttons, you must configure the driver accordingly. The ADF is not available as an add-on to the 8600, though Visioneer does have plans to sell it separately sometime in the future.

Once configured, though, the ADF handles your documents with ease and speed. When compared to the only other ADF-enabled scanner we've looked at, the HP ScanJet 6350Cse, the 8650 blazed through a ten-page document in nearly half the time, or a bit more than five minutes. In addition, hardly any paper jams occurred during testing.

In CNET Labs' tests, the 8650 handled single scans well, too. A full-page color scan at 150 dots per inch (dpi) (600-by-1,200-dpi maximum resolution) averaged only 18.5 seconds, and a grayscale scan came in at 17.3 seconds. The Visioneer roughly tied with the Umax Astra 6400 FireWire and was edged out only by the Epson Perfection 1200U.

However, that speed does come at a slight sacrifice of quality. Scans were generally crisp and clear, but color was somewhat washed out. While that might seem an understandable compromise for the speed, consider again the Perfection 1200U: It's the fastest scanner CNET has tested; it offers the finest scan quality that we've seen so far; and it costs less than the 8650, albeit without an ADF.

In fact, at $299, the 8650 is a great bargain. It costs only slightly more than most other SOHO scanners without ADFs; in contrast, the HP ScanJet 6350Cse, which does include one, costs $499. If you're willing to give up a bit of scan quality for speed and low cost, the 8650 is well worth considering.

Although the 8650's strengths lie in its speed and features, its weaknesses lie in its somewhat lackluster software bundle and customer support options. The 8650 comes with a small amount of software, its most notable applications being the perfectly adequate TextBridge Pro 8 OCR package and PaperPort Deluxe for document and image management. Visioneer provides PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer for an image editor, as opposed to the more robust Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and the other titles are hardly worth mentioning. Customer service itself is free, but the phone call is not; technicians are available only Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Pacific time.

Ultimately, the value of the Visioneer OneTouch 8650 hinges on its document feeder. While other scanners offer better scan quality and software, the 8650 lets you scan volumes of documents for a lower price than that of other ADF-equipped SOHO scanners.

The Visioneer ranks among the best in terms of speed, on a par with the Umax Astra and coming in just behind the Epson Perfection. Its unimpressive scan quality makes it better suited for business scanning than photo archiving.

Save your money. Don't waste your time.

Pros: Excellent PDF and JPG imaging. Fast, single sheet scanning. Great price, if it worked! The Automatic Document Feeder would be great, but it didn't work even once. Reliability? How should I know; after two days of frustration, I'm sending it back.

Cons: After installing, you must remove the drivers, then download and install drivers for Win XP because they are not bundled with the software. After doing so, every trime I tried to run PaperPort, I received an error message, "PaperPort will now close." Sc

It had good day and bad days.

Pros: It is great for large stacks of documents on a good day. Some days the ADF eats everything...some days I have no problems. For the most part, the only good thing about this scanner is the ADF. That's why I bought it. I love the ADF when it works.

Cons: Quality of pictures are horrible. Very faded. I have a crappy horrible Canon scanner that takes 10 minutes to scan one picture and the quality is better than the Visioneer. (and let me tell you...the canon has horrible quality) I would only recommend th

BEWARE...Poor product...LOUSY "Support"!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Be advised that this company has no toll free or email support. I purchased a Visioneer 8820 about 8 months ago. Worked fine for 5 weeks then failed. Was obviously a failure so attempted to obtain RMA number and return instructions. Over an hour on hold and $35.00 in toll charges plus $16.00 to ship back defective unit. Replacement unit failed after 2 months. It is now considered "obsolete" so will cost me toll charges again PLUS $2.00 per minute for their "Express Technical Support. My cost to obtain warranty replacements will far exceed the cost of the scanner. Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a scanner. No one needs this kind of aggrivation.

Great value for a scanner with ADF

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's extremely hard to find a reasonably priced scanner with an Automatic Document Feeder. Found this one on sale at Staples (around $150 after rebates etc). I did read the comments about problems installing, with the ADF, etc., but figured I'd try it since there really is no other scanner with an ADF in this price class. Well, I had NO problems installing it (using Windows XP Pro on both a Pentium III (500MHz) and Pentium 4 (1.5GHz). It has standard TWAIN drivers in which you can select to scan off the flatbed, or via the ADF. The ADF has performed flawlessly and handles stacks of papers fine... even ones that have been folded (like you'd get a letter in an envelope). Scanner quality is not the best - meaning if you're looking to scan photos for retouching, etc., then look elsewhere... it does an OK job, but probably not to the level of a pro-sumer. But that's not where this scanner's strength lies (lays?): it's for the ADF. And scanning color or b&w at 200 or 300dpi using the ADF is perfect for document archival, etc. I can now scan all my statements, bills, etc, and get rid of my file cabinets. I dont know if I got lucky, or if others just had different expectations, but since this is an old (I think discontinued) model, if you can find it on the cheap, it really is a steal.

Must have correct layer overlaps in ADF

Pros:

Cons:

Review: With Windows XP Pro on a 2GHz Dell, the software installed right away, but I was careful to follow the clear instructions regarding the order of SW install and USB hardware connect. After an hour of shredded pages, I called Visioneer to get a failure number so I could return it to the seller. The polite technician answered in 2 minutes and had me examine the overlap of the two clear plastic layers on the ADF underside and we found that the big one was on top of the little one (this is WRONG!) so I reversed the overlap and it's fed flawlessly everafter. So don't ask why such a SIMPLE ADF fix is not painted all over the documentation and website; she couldn't say. A terrific bargain at under $200. Multipage Acrobat scans require using the Visioneer Scan Manager from Acrobat; it doesn't accept multiple pages from the Visioneer one-button scan but this is an Adobe issue and isn't a significant hassle.

2 not working out of the box

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The first one, never scanned a page... kept thinking it was still locked. The ADF on the 2nd one doesn't work. Press scan and it nevers feeds in a page. Tried the ADF on the first one and it didn't work either. I'm out a bunch of shipping charges now. No bargain.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible

Pros:

Cons:

Review: We got this scanner in the office about two month ago. Since then we have had to call Visioneer support to replace it twice. Out of three replacements, none of them worked, two of them jammed every 3 pages of so, and the third one just randomly stops working in mid-scan. Unless you want to spend hours on the phone with rude tech support, I suggest that you try another brand.

Pros:

Cons:

Bought two for company, both broke and replacements broke

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Our company bought two of the these for HR to scan resumes. After about 2 weeks, one broke (would jam on the ADF). The next week the 2nd broke (scanning mechanism stuck). Called the long-distance number and received RMA's. Both of the replacements broke within a week (both had ADF problems).

Buy an HP instead - you'll be happier

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The scanner hardware isn't bad (though the ADF mechanism is a little cheesy, it does seem to work), the software is an absolute mess. The initial installation produced nothing but memory access violations for most operations, and I had to go to 3 different web sites to find the necessary patches, some of which were more than a year old!

Feeder does not work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After about 100 flawless scans with the ADF, it started slowly degrading. After 200 scans, the ADF basically works no more; protests randomly every 2-3 pages. Have tried 4-5 different kind of paper stacks and the ADF works on none (again, was flawless in the beginning on all of these). Without the ADF the scanner is close to useless.

Great for low to mid volume scanning

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For the price, you get a machine with a very good and, thus far (after two months)dependable document feeder. For extremely high volume (ie. more than 50 pages of scans per day) it's probably not powerful enough.

Loud grinding and screeching - no support either - pure hell

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've scanned a total of seven pictures with this scanner. Now it screeches and whines and the light bar sticks at the end. Also, read the convoluted explanation as to when (or if) they will ever have XP drivers. No response to email, and no toll-free number - I'm not going to pay to be on hold for 40 minutes. Botton line: DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER - HP or Epson are much better, even if you just consider support options.

Hard to set up but works great

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had heard that the Onetouch 8650 was a bear to set up with Windows 2000 and this assessment was certainly true in my case. In defense of Visioneer technical support, I dealt with two very knowledgeable and patient individuals who finally were able to resolve the installation problem. The machine itself works flawlessly although the lamp doesn't always turn off when it should. For the money, its a good device and the ADF places it well above the competition.

ADF broken after 1 day of use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The scanner was woring great the first day of use then the ADF started jamming. After about 100 scans only half the document would go through followed by alot of loud grinding and screeching noises. I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary...honest. I called Tech Support and they said return it. I'm getting a replacement and hopefully I just got one bad apple out of the bunch.

Fast Scan but who needs BMP attachments?

Pros:

Cons:

Fantastic Office Tool - Can't Live Without it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a brilliant product. It's the only multi-button scanner I could find with an OCR button, making much of my scanning a breeze. The HP ADF scanners are almost impossible to use for OCR, so I junked mine. The OneTouch feature is pure genius! I seldom have to change the button configuration, but it is brain dead easy to do - just hold down a button to reprogram it. The 8650 is faster and holds more paper than my cantankerous old HP 6350 and document feeding is flawless. Image quality is very good for my office needs, but this is not a pre-press scanner for the graphics designer. Installation was quick and simple and I was scanning in about five minutes!

Nice Hardware, Poor Software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've only had the 8650 less than a week. It's mechanism appears to be OK. It's not as fast as the Paperport Vx I also own but the quality of the scan seems better (though I did not do side-by-side compare). It's glaring weakness is the lack of a software tool to facilitate scanning 2-sided documents. I accept that the scanner does not flip the page like a Xerox machine; but, I expected it to be able to scan fronts of pages and backs of pages and to weave the resulting package into a single stacked document. And the OEM package does not spell out this limitations. Who doesn't have two-sided documents to scan?? As for service. I've tried the e-mail type and so far they have been little or no help. Ususally their answer is my question rephrased and sent back-- very frustrating. I still may keep the 8650 after being able to cobble up a way to get over the 2-sided document hump but is much more labor than I bargained for.

First choice for office productivity

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have Epson 1200U. I also have old Visioneer vX sheetfed. I bought this because my sheetfed would not work under Windows 2000 (I just cried). Epson is for my wife, the artist and photographer. But for my home office, I would not trade the productivity of the Visioneer. I use for faxing, document archival, etc. Document feeder is flawless. Hardware and software work very well together to handle chores quickly and effortlessly. Even the layout is ingenous - it sits sideways on a bookshelf with buttons right at your fingertips. This is not possible with normal scanner layouts.

Great everyday scanner

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Feeding documents into my other flatbeds became a real chore. I looked for a better scanner with ADF but decided to give this one a try. The ADF alone is worth 250 bucks with other scanners. I have shoved multi-paged documents in this scanner and has worked like a charm each and every time. It use to take me forever to scan stuff in because of the amount of paper shuffling (umm did I scan this page already). I actually use this scanner every day. If I need high quality scans, I will use my other flatbed. But for everyday scanning (I hardly ever scan over 600dpi because of the size of files), this is the best scanner for the price.

Cant be beat for productivity enhancement

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased this printer the moment I found it was available. If you are someone who primarily uses a scanner for document management and general SOHO type work I highly recomend this printer. It's very easy to use, fast and the paperport software perfectly complements every feature of the printer. It isnt the sharpest scanner around for graphic work, but for non professional level graphic work and everything other use you could want a scanner for I found no problem whatsoever with this scanner. The automatic document feeder on this unit is a wonderful timesaver, the task of swapping out multipage documents page by page is gone (unless you have double sided documents to scan). The only beef I have is that if you wish to scan multiple pages into a program such as Adobe Acrobat using the automatic feeder, you will find that the onetouch software utility informs you that the target application can not accept multiple page scans at one time. I'm not sure if this is the limitation of the Onetouch software or of Adobe Acrobat so I will not point fingers at anyone specific, but this is a feature that would be extremely useful. Scansoft's (visioneer) hardware and software support are notoriously behind the curve when it comes to customer support (I have owned Visioneer products in the past), but the hardware in my experience has been very user friendly, troublefree and reliable. Occasionally there is the wait for software updates and fixes to be issued in the past for various visioneer products. But I have had no issues whatsoever with this scanner. I use it in both windows 98 (desktop-usb) and windows 2000 (notebook-usb) and am yet to have any hardware or software concerns. Thumbs up!!
