"Too bad it doesn't live up to it's hype" on by kbuscho
Pros: Portable, USB-Powered
Cons: Poor paper feeding and management; flakey install; flakey software
Summary: My biggest beef with this thing is paper management. Since there is no way to adjust the paper path width, it's way too easy to get the document skewed on the way in. If the paper is slick (like a magazine), it tends to skew during feed. I'm not sure what possessed them to put a USB connector on the backside of the scanner, don't they test for cable management? Because my laptop has USB ports on the right and this has it's USB port on the right back, you must carefully route the cable to avoid entanglement with the paper, and by the time you do the math of page length and scanner width, there's no way to do it right with the cable that is provided. Normal printer paper (and certainly newspaper) is too flimsy to reliably trigger a feed. There's also enough of a delay between when the scanner detects the paper and the software kicks in to cause some uncertainty as to if this paper placement is going to be a success; how about an LED or a beep or something to say the scanner found the paper? The printed QuickStart guide did not match the actual install process. I bought this product against my better judgement, I was not pleased with earlier products from these guys, but, hey, maybe they've improved, they are still in business. I got this because I wanted something to take with my laptop that was portable, reliable and inexpensive. 1 out of 3 does not cut it.

"it's sweetly portable" on
Pros: Portability is precious--try carrying a flat-bed scanner to a library and you'll see what I mean. Scans are easily good enough for OCR, and even the photos are reasonable.
Cons: Not nearly as reliable as a flatbed, and the interface between software-hardware is glitchy (will often have to restart Paperport before it will scan); also, need to use the included photo slips or it won't copy photos at all. Also, poor paper handling f
