The bottom line: Easy Media Creator 7.0 offers the most comprehensive and well-integrated suite of CD- and DVD-burning tools on the market.

Roxio has brought a common look and feel to Easy Media Creator's various components. There are large buttons and pop-up tool tips for beginners, though advanced users can opt for more options and controls. Because of Easy Media Creator's sheer number of tools, Roxio has devised an excellent new user interface. Expanding on a more traditional launcher setup, in which you select which specific application to open, Easy Media Creator also features a user-friendly, task-oriented interface. Split into three tiers, the home page's top row offers a list of possible jobs, divided by category: Music, Data (CD), Photo, Video, and DVD. The middle row provides a more traditional list of the available applications and tools, and the bottom row displays a list of recent projects for quick access.
![]() With a task-based interface that offers a laundry list of operations ranging from Edit Video to Create Greeting Card, Easy Media Creator takes the guesswork out of selecting applications. |
While Easy Media Creator's components are highly integrated, they're still separate applications. When you select a task, the home menu immediately disappears, and you're left with a blank screen until an application loads; it's a bit disconcerting at first. The suite's Media Manager is great for previewing and organizing all of your files, but it's not always the most efficient way to execute tasks such as editing a group of photos or videos. Thankfully, each editing application still includes its own integrated browser or preview interface. Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0 brims with features new and old. Roxio has taken a major step in dividing up capture and management components for all types of media--photo, video, and audio. But it also makes it easy to bring all of the media types back together to create complete productions, such as slide shows and DVDs.
Creator Classic, Roxio's trusty app for burning data and audio CDs and MP3 discs, can now perform scheduled backups for periodic, automated data archiving. Roxio's Retrieve utility can be included on backup discs to extract files with optional encryption or multidisc spanning. A Drag-to-Disc feature lets you write discs directly from Windows Explorer, while the handy Disc And Device utility provides information on disc drives and their contents.
For audio work, Creator can now rip to the Ogg Vorbis format, and it uses the Gracenote CDDB2 service to identify audio CDs. Another utility lets you create disc labels, jewel case inserts, and booklets. Beyond simple disc-to-disc copying, the Disc Copier utility also lets you extract material from unprotected DVD-Video discs. You can preview video content, select an individual video title, and choose to copy just the primary audio format; however, you cannot pick and choose video titles and audio tracks. The Disc Copier is OK, but limited compared to some standalone tools such as InterVideo's DVD Copy.
![]() In advanced mode, Easy Media Creator's Disc Copier offers some fairly full-bodied features. |
The Capture tool can import photos from a camera or scanner, grab video from a camcorder or a TV tuner, or capture audio; the SmartScan feature lets you prescan a DV tape to preview scenes before capturing, saving time in the long run. You can also use Capture to extract video clips from a DVD disc or DVD folder on a hard disk, but with less control than you have using Disc Copier. During our testing, the DVD disc-scanning feature often failed to find clips.
PhotoSuite 7.0 provides a very friendly interface for common photo-editing tasks, as well as enhancement options such as painting, masking, and facial-flaw correction; it's a nice application for beginners but has less depth than other dedicated photo editors. For video editing, VideoWave 7.0 offers a host of options for users of various skill levels; you can use Cinemagic to automatically edit a video production, StoryBuilder to guide you through the process more manually, or the Production Editor interface to create a production using a storyboard or time-line view. We really like VideoWave's multiple modes, and it should keep new users happy for quite a while.
Easy Media Creator includes DVD Builder for authoring DVDs and a variety of VCD formats. It offers template-based DVD menu design, with control over designing menus, buttons, chapters, and tracks of multiple clips (with transitions). The Plug & Burn feature records directly from a DV camcorder to a DVD disc, and the Edit DVD disc feature can edit directly on a rewritable disc or add new titles to a recordable disc before it is finalized.
Easy Media Creator has scads of other features, including a basic sound editor, a simple media player that cannot display movies in full wide-screen, and Napster 2.0 for (legally) previewing and purchasing downloaded music. Roxio offers good support for Easy Media Creator 7.0. Extensive built-in help comes by way of links to the PDF user guides and additional online resources. The company's Web site offers a searchable knowledge base and discussion groups with active responses from Roxio staff. Roxio provides complimentary e-mail technical support, but for only 90 days after a user's first contact--a little chintzy in our opinion.
![]() Roxio's online support offers a solid knowledge base, very helpful discussion groups, and a decent FAQ. |
Telephone support, available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, costs $35 per incident. Support requires a Technical Support Identification number, found on the installation CD (but different from the CD Key).

Utterly sucks!
Pros: If it could do all the things it claims, it would be great.
Cons: It does absolutely NONE of the things it claims.
I have NEVER in my life used such a HORRIBLE program. It is literally the worst package I ever came across. I think the list of features that did work would be shorter than the list that didn't.
First, I should tell you that I (stupidly) bought the program and then tried installing it first on an XP machine and then, thinking that the XP machine was too under powered to run it (though it satisfied all the listed system requirements) tried moving it to my new vista. Every time I tried a new program feature, I would get a different error. I posted several problems to their tech support and kept finding that they'd close my support requests without ever contacting me! In fact, a few of them they closed without even answering them!
All in all, I clean reinstalled the program 7 times, following their directions and installing their patches every time and to this day it still doesn't work correctly. Their answer to my frustration after a year (A YEAR!!!!) of tech support calls was for me to buy the upgrade to their next version. Well, I suppose I did look pretty stupid since I kept trying to get their program to work.
Do NOT buy this. Do not buy ANY of this company's software and if it's on your computer, take it off and buy something that will work. Roxio seriously SUCKS!

Shame On Roxio
Pros: Nothing worth considering
Cons: Bad Tech Support, More Features to Buy
Another thing I’ve noticed is that their products advertise a variety of features, but frequently you have to BUY add-ons to take full advantage. Lastly, there seems to be very little integration between products and sometimes you find you have several completely different programs to complete the same task. It’s pretty obvious their developers don’t talk to each other.
If you decided to upgrade one of their products, be sure you have the ability to reinstall the previous version.

So, what is the point of a RW. You need to re-burn the entire disk to get rid of a file!!!
DUM. Useless
The bundled software only allows a typical install. You can't do a custom and therefore must install all of the other low quality, very low quality, "features" like , DVD burner (to build a low, loooooow quality slide show...images/jpegs look like 100 year old photos) photo editing. Nero sucks too.
NO, ZERO tech support. The web support was and is a joke. The product is so bad which is why they don't have support (not enough people in India to suuport it!).

Can't BELIEVE Roxio EMC is a cnet editor's choice
Pros: The software offers a wide variety of multi-media options -- easy to learn. Authoring tools for DVD are very intuitive and easy to learn, however, the storyboard editing feature is a bit clunky.
Cons: Unreliable burning -- seldom works without MAJOR problems. Horrible tech support.
The tech support site is so bad I couldn't begin to describe it. I did find on the discussion board that many users were have the exact same problems -- but unfortunately, there were no solutions posted. Misery may love company, but personally, I love solutions.
I haven't given up trying to get my latest production to burn an image file because I have too much time invested in creating it. However, I'm researching a new software purchase. I always look to cnet for reviews when I'm in the market -- but after the cnet review of Roxio EMC, I'm definitely checking other sources.

Terrible piece of software, find something else
Pros: You can eventually compile a music CD
Cons: Everything else.
1. First, I can't log on to their site. All attempts over a week are rejected and the site doesn't say why. (It's not my security settings.)
2. 72 hours since sending a question via email with no answer.
2. Help files anemic
3. You can't print a track list unless you create a label and that doesn't work either.
4. In Label Creator, I expanded the object holding track names, edited a few and they disappear from the label when I returned to the main screen.
5. The program covers Windows taskbar so it has to minimized to get to another open app.
It took me so long to compile 3 CDs of music that was stored on my computer, that I can't even remember half the issues I encountered.

What a piece of trash. Waste of money & time - BEWARE!
Pros: I can throw it away!
Cons: "Cons" is too polite for what this deserves.
This program really does not work; and there is nothing more frustrating than spending money on a program that is supposed to work on your computer and does not. Also, Roxio "Support" is virtually nonexistant.
I rarely write reviews, but I've had such a bad experience with this program that I can't help myself. I will never buy anything from Roxio ever again. Please, do yourself a favor and do the same. This almost forced me to literlly throw my hard drives in the garbage. Theoretically, you should be able to call a tech support line to obtain help with this kind of problem, however thank god for speaker phone as I was on hold forever. I still have problems with drives disappearing. Should have read reviews and stayed away from this "crap" software.

This should not be classified as "software".
Pros: Big pictures on retail box showing you what you SHOULD be able to do.
Cons: Once you open the box and install the software, it is far from operable.
The software is rediculously slow. The interface is non user-friendly. The packaging seems to be created for visually impaired individuals, they throw large pictures of cameras and CDs on the box and assume that that makes a product function well.
This is the worst investment ive ever made.

Worst piece of software ever made
Pros: None at all, nothing, nada
Cons: More bugs than I've ever seen, worthless tech support
Roxio 7 wouldn't recognize my CD/DVD drives, after hours on tech support, they couldn't help me, offered to escalate, no one ever called back. I found a solution myself on the Internet, but you have to go through this insane updater process every time you want to so much as burn a CD. If you reboot your computer, have to run the updater and reboot again.

Did not work, tech support did not care
Pros: Supposedly does everything
Cons: Does not do most things
Other problems I had included the video CDs did not work, their CD burner program would not recognize my very popular HP burner, and the program's start page would not load at all and did not give an error message. Plus, the install is very intrusive, and it did not uninstall properly. It required quite a bit of manual registry editing to get the program uninstalled.

Plug and Burn not that great
Pros: Can't think of any
Cons: Just came out with ver 7.5, just after buying ver 7!
Ver 7.5 is an upgrade, not an update, so users of ver 7 can't get it for free. They sell it like a regular product. I bought mine a little too early. For the same price I could have gotten the extra features of 7.5.
I didn't feel this product was that intuitive for making DVDs.

Other than that, this is a great suite of products and after the merger with Sonic, they included a few apps from them in version 7.5. Although technical support can be slow (what company's isn't these days?), there is an excellant user to user forum where anyone can ask for help.

Okay Software, Annoying Habits
Pros: Okay for writing things to various media types
Cons: Very poor installation options, bad tech support
So, I went through, figured out which ones Roxio installed, and killed them. I then opened Word, and the Roxio installed popped up, and reinstalled all the fonts! I killed them again, this time using various registry tools to clean them out of the registry, and then launched CuteFTP Pro. Up pops the roxio installer, and reinstalls them!
This is IDIOCY!!!!! If every piece of software on my system did this, I would have an unmanagable font list. MAybe Roxio needs to get someone with some brains working on their software, since they can't seem to figure out what PERSONAL computer means--it means I can customize my environment, not save their tech support money by wasting my time scrolling through their UGLY font choices each time I want to change from Helvetica to Garamond in Word!
They need to fix this. In the meantime, I'm looking for a good burning software that will respect my computer settings.

Will not work with most capture devices.
Pros: Editing and burning audio disks in EMC7 is great. Capturing analog audio through my sound card is a breeze. Editing audio signals is easy.
Cons: Video editing is OK but capturing using other software is frustrating. This software doesn't live up to it hype.

Previous version superior, this version a big DOWNgrade
Pros: It looks pretty
Cons: Lots of options removed, no really new features, and serious stability problems. Some existing features (such as append to disc) do not work and Roxio knew before it was prematurely released. The review mentions scheduled backups, but these are not sched

Nero Eat Your Heart Out!!!
Pros: I have been using Roxio since Easy Cd Creater 4. I have tried Nero and even used it for a while as some their software was a bit easier to use than roxio but this was only while Roxio was sorting out the DVD issues. Now that Media Creater 7 is out I hav
Cons: Perhaps the ability to change the CD/DVD drive on the front page in Creater Classic like we could in version 6. It is good that we can change the disk size but I think it would be even better to be able to change the drive as well.

It constantly crashes!
Pros: If it worked I guess there would be a whole bunch of applications.
Cons: I bought it from Roxio's web site. It sounded really good, exactly what I needed. I downloaded it, fine. That's when the problems started. Everytime I use one of the applications, such as DVD Builder it crashes after a few minutes (on Win XP, it reboo

The PC Boffins will hate it cos it's easy!
Pros: I find this program dead easy to use and still very powerful. I can't think of anything that I couldn't do with a cd or dvd. Well done to Creator 7 for taking the mystery out of film making and burning!
Cons: Would have liked the homepage to be configurable.

Premature birth
Pros: Looks pretty
Cons: Download programme stinks. It freezes contantly. Installing a pain, will only expand to C drive (no other options) so you better have at least 4 gig free. Documentation is weak. It seems that Roxio needed a reason to implement product activation just

Roxio got it RIGHT!
Pros: Great Features... for novice or pro.. After rushing out it's first DVD product, EZ CD&DVD Creator 6, Roxio started from the ground up (especially on DVD creatiom) and REALLY got it right. Very impressive.
Cons: DVD Builder has no way to make a LINK to a submenu... a basic feature that was left out. Several Bugs in Label creator which I am sure they will patch.

Amazing package
Pros: CNet got it right – like every other review I’ve see so far – nothing comes close. I’m using the product and it is simply astonishing in ease of use and depth. At first I thought I would stick with Sonic and Pinnacle for DVD and video, and Microsoft for p
Cons: Eveything within the modules is fast but switching between modules is a bit slow. Support does seem a bit chintzy but haven't had to use it.
