Cons: Would like to see the keywords better intergrated into the print outs, however this is small minor point.

Pros: I liked the interface, especially the method of modifying saturation, color balance, contrast, etc.
Cons: The "one click" red eye works only about half the time. Neither a really red eye shot nor a minimal red eye photo work. The "one click" at times generated a forehead covering hugh grey splotch rather than dealing with the targeted red eye. MY REAL DISS

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Can't read exif correctly from a canon. Says flash is on no matter what. Also, if you save in high quality but want to email out at less than 100k, must go to options and change file format to low quality. After emailing, better remember to go back to options and change back to high quality, Otherwise, the next time you edit, you will save it in low quality. ooops, there goes your picture as it is now saved at low quality and LOST!!

DVD/VCD show never works..by - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I'm a pretty advanced user, both of computers/technology in general and with digital media. I tried many times to create a VCD to play in my DVD machine, and the feature never works! I try with my desktop.. I try with my brand new Sony VAIO (supposedly media friendly).. I'm just burning useless CD. Even when I try to do a "no frills" VCD of just a few pics, it doesn't work. I figure if *I* can't get it to work, how is the rest of the bell curve of non-advanced users supposed to? The other features (outside the VCD feature) seem comparable to other software packages... besides, if you're decent with file organization, do you really need all that?

Great Intuitive Productby - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: For me, Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 4.0 wins hands down over Adobe Photoshop album (I'm using both). Once caveat: I'm also using Adobe Photoshop Elements for editing all my digital photos, so I don't use the photo editing features in Paint Shop Photo Album 4.0. But, I am delighted with the ease, simplisity and breath of the photo organization and photo sharing features in Paint Shop Photo Album. I was originally using Adobe Photoshop Album but I found that it would not always handle my larger images 25MB to 50MB, and for some reason the thumbnail images were completely distorted with contrast. I'm glad a discovered Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album.

ACDSee, although older, beats this one hands-downby - May 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: ACDSee needs a bit of attention in the classification area to make it easier, but it beats Paint Shop Photo Album as well as Adobe Photo Album hands down when it comes to performance when scrolling through images. In Paint Shop Photo Album one can only scroll through a series of images in full screen mode by using the slow clunky "slide show" mode. Browsing through the Adobe user's forum, it is clear that this is also very slow in Adobe Photo Album. A MAJOR gap in Paint Shop Photo Album is the lack of a calendar view of one's images, something that is handled excellently by ACDSee. Given these gaps, I am amazed that this application has been given an Editor's Choice rating.

Two Thumbs UP!by - April 26, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Very straightforward, ease of useage, excellent assignment to folders and file names or renaming files or folders with ease of copying or moving folders and/or files. More choices with selection of photo quality with "more...", "current" or "less..." options. This may slow down a bit but you have more choices to select the right picture. Ideal for beginners or not too serious photographers. When qualities matter I think Pro 7 is better to use for photo enhancement. Captioning of text with ease of coloring of text is very good except for trying to place the caption at the bottommost of the photo or lack of background coloring to offset text color on multi-colors on photo. I would recommend Pro 7 for better texting quality with controlled background color for ease of reading. Panorama works very well (beyond my expectation with its ease of putting together five separate shots into an awesome panorama). For someone like me I think Paint Shop Photo Album is a breeze and well-worth the purchase. At least I know it is not as frustrating an experience as I had with Adobe PhotoShop.

I don't care for Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 4.by - April 24, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Photo Album 4 is very easy to use, but disappointing. I was interested in the image enhancements tools. It has an easy instant fix - but didn't do much. Further enhancement are easy but, not practical. Red eye fix is poor, but may work adequately, sometimes. I would not recommend this program. I compared it with Paint Shop Pro 8 Beta which has a comprehensive one click fix with decent results. Additional manual enhancements are good. The red eye fix tool is excellent and easy. All my test images were finished better with PSP8. A good program for me, however there is a learning curve, and most aren't that fussy.

You have to love itby - April 17, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Very easy to use.....but not insultingly simple either. It teams beautifully with Paint Shop Pro: if you need a little more editing power on the details, like red eye, skin tone, working in layers, then instantly jump to PS Pro. But for speed sorting, cataloguing, searching and finding, with some straight forward cool editing this program is excellent. When I first got it I couldn't tear myself away! I ended up cataloguing everything and adding key search words in one evening!

Review: The program itself works well, except being sluggish. Stay with AfterShot PE. The $36 sudden upgrade to Photo Album for just a few extra features is not worth my money. Wait for a major upgrade after they work out the bugs and give us some more features. At this rate it could be next month.

Those who designed it must use it!by - April 2, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just spent 3 hours after work getting a whole slew of photos arranged in albums and assigned keywords to each. Couldn't have been easier...the keyword interface is great, nice to be able to select a bunch of photos and get the same keywords assigned in one stroke. Then the great part of the program was its search feature. And, once you've searched you can even refine the keywords on the fly while in the search mode (hey Microsoft - do you think you could be soooo cool?) So, thats the good stuff. What's not so cool...well, sometimes the program took way to long moving photos between albums. I've got plenty of memory and a fast processor...something not quite right here but not unaccepable either. Overall, a great product!

Even my husband can use itby - March 24, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: As a long time user of Paint Shop Pro I immediately thought of JASC when my computer illiterate husband wanted to scan and catalogue all our photos and slides. Nevertheless I tried out other brands of software which were either too basic or unnecessarily bitsy and confusing for my poor hubby. PSPA was none of this, it didn't pretend to have all the functionality of PSP but on the other hand you could edit and catalogue your photos fully with ease and what is more my husband took to it immediately, he even understood it (that's a first). So now while I play around creating masterpieces in PSP hubby can cheerfully organise, tidy and catalogue in PSPA.

Tried the beta, sticking to Adobeby - March 23, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: For a consumer-level product, first impressions are key. I was able to accomplish more, quicker in PhotoShop Album than in the JASC product. I agree that there is a more comprehensive feature set in PhotoAlbum, but adobe is known for strides in post 1.0 releases, and I'd rather be set up with my catalog in one product and maintain it than have to switch solutions and start from scratch. PhotoShop Album 1.0 is good. 2.0 will be great. Stick with Adobe.

Unbeatable for its intended purpose.by - March 20, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have been using this program since its inception years ago as ImageExpert by Sierra Imaging. It is now in at least its 5th iteration, the last two having come since its purchase by Jasc. Sierra gets credit for the basic layout and useablility and Jasc for continuting to develop the image editing features. It ain't Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, it ain't meant to be, and I hope Jasc doesn't try to make it all things at the expense of the time-proven features. If you want a totally full-featured and complex image editing program, buy it but quit whining about what this one doesn't do! In my opinion, what it DOES do better -- and quicker -- than any other is: 1. Organize, name, and move pictures among albums, 2. Provide a superior and very flexible print layout, and 3. Offer a crop feature that is easy to use, maintains aspect ratios, and provides a range of fixed crop sizes as well as freehand crop. The image editing features are improving -- most notably with the multi-level undo in the latest version. It's at the point where a first-time digital picture user could get along with only this program until he or she wants more arcane editing functions. Uncluttered and gimmick-free interface that doesn't insult your intelligence with all sorts of cutesy "tools." Comes from a Company that freely shares beta versions and lets you take potshots and gives you answers. Lots of good info and support on their website. Downloaded trial versions are full and limited only by time. Prompt shipping. One Fatal Corporate Flaw: I'll have to agree with other comments that Jasc thumbs their nose at you with their stingy upgrade policy. I got so excited about AfterShot in Mid-December of 2002 that I purchased two boxed copies (one for a gift) and talked two other people into purchasing them. The next version was released less than three months later, and it seems to me that the upgrade should have been free plus postage and maybe ten bucks or so. In spite of the fact that I am generally quite proper on the issue of copywrited software, you can bet that those I bought for and encouraged to buy will have a copy of my PhotoAlbum disc. I'll be too embarassed to tell them that they've got to now lay out another $36 ("Upgrade" price + shipping) to get the latest version.

Not as good as ACDSeeby - March 19, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: While the image manipulation in the program is better, for file management (what the program is actually supposed to do) it's not as good as ACDSee. It's Albums are little more than new folders it references, and it doesn't offer as wide an array when it comes to catalogueing photos. Plus it doesn't support as many file types.

Great Program. Better that Photoshop Album 1.0!by - March 12, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have both programs (PSA 1.0 and PSPA 4.0) but I only use Paint Shop Photo Album 4! Why? 1) Tags or keywords?: In Photoshop Album you can create just a very limited amount of nested tags, example: Places/US/Ohio and that's it!, you cannot create any more subtags below Ohio. On the other hand in PSPA you can go Places/US/Ohio/Cleveland/Rock & Roll Hall of Fame/Beatles etc etc, nesting multiple keywords to better organize your photos. 2)In Photoshop Album you move your photos to a new folder or to another disk in you computer, or you delete a photo, and you loose the connection between the real photo and the virtual photo in the Photo Well and then you have to reconnect both (what a pain!),on the other hand in PSPA you can move photos to different folders (albums)and you always keep your keywords associated with your photos and no need to reconnect or associate anything. What you see it's what you get!, there is nothing virtual, no broken links and no missing photos. 3)E-mail: In Photoshop Album you need to set up a new Address Book in order to e-mail photographs, in PSAP you just use your Outlook Express address book or the address book associated with the e-mail software you use. In Photoshop album you cannot even import your address into its Contact List (you can use vCards but that's too slow and cumbersome when you have hundreds of addresses) 4) Basic Photo Editing: The editing features in Photoshop Album are sooooo sloooooowwwwwww!!! and that's with 758 Mb of RAM and a P4 2.6 MHz processor in my computer. On the contrary I find PSPA photo editing to be really fast and efficient. I agree that the Calendar View and the time Line are nice and useful features in Photoshop Album, and it would be nice if Jasc could implement something similar in PSPA 2 but right now for organizing, editing and sharing my photos I find PSPA a better product than Photoshop Album. I absolutely recommend this program to beginners and intermediate users.

Pass on this piece of junkby - March 7, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just need a basic image editor that does a good job with red-eye reduction, and based on the CNET review, I decided to give this program a shot. Well, I don't think the reviewer knows what the word "aplomb" means. The red-eye reduction feature on this program blows. It turns the brightest part of the subject's red eye a smoky gray, leaving the rest red. If you don't zoom in on the image just right, the "one-click correction" red-eye cross-hairs won't work right, since the size of the cross-hairs is not adjustable. It doesn't get rid of all the red either. If the subject's eye is only slightly red, the one-click tool doesn't work well at all. Want to use the red-eye brush? Watch how the eye is now painted black. Oh yeah and the interface is clunky too. Next!
