    "Antivirus/Firewall nothing but a headache"

    by tall_david on May 6, 2007

Pros: System utilities themselves work well, improving system performance

Cons: Antivirus/Firewall such a headache with no support it is not worth installing.

Summary: System Mechanic 6 was one of my favorites, worked well. When I upgrade to 7, I was excited about what it promised to deliver. Unfortunately, they have introduced their own new antivirus/firewall system that brought HP laptop to a crawl and made receiving email virtually impossible. Running Outlook 2003 with three different pop email accounts of which my email hosting is with yahoo web hosting because a nightmare. Outlook would freeze attempting to download email and mail was constantly being stuck in the outbox. I tired tweeking every which way I could. Sent emails to the tech support at Iolo to get zero response. All my problems went away when I uninstalled the antivirus and firewall programs. System Mechanic 7 is good by itself but stay away from the antivirus and firewall until Iolo addresses this problem.

After upgrading to version SM7 Pro, Outlook Express times out after one or two messages, and the Netsky virus got me.

The answer? Do a complete uninstall, including Authentium\antivirus\dvpapi.exe folder and its service and prefetch, which gets installed with Iolo antivirus. Dvpapi.exe was licensed by Iolo from Authentium under the name Command Anti-virus for Windows.

Download and do a clean install of System Mechanic Pro WITHOUT the antivirus and firewall. You'll be able to deselect them during the install.

Then I installed Kaspersky Internet Suite, which is recognized on SM 7's main page. Now Outlook Express is working fine, and SM7 Pro is a great systems utility.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no human support for Mechanic 7. I couldn't get a reply to my emails inquiring about the product, which is a big red flag. If they cannot answer a question before the sale, they won't be any help after purchase either.
