VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware is high-performance security software that doesn't slow down your PC like older, traditional antivirus products. VIPRE is the end of antivirus software as you know it. PC Magazine just gave it an excellent review with 4 stars! Tired of old antivirus software that makes your PC slow down to a crawl? Interrupting what you are doing with slow scan times, causing problems and nagging you? Time for a change to next-generation antivirus + antispyware that is not a resource hog!Product summary
The good: Vipre combines antivirus and antispyware in one engine; offers secure deletion of files and browsing history; exposes hidden processes running on your computer; fully functional, 15-day, free trial.
The bad: Vipre does not yet include firewall protection.
The bottom line: Vipre combines antivirus and antispyware technology in a fast and light application that also includes a worthy set of security tools.

Sunbelt Software, known best for its award-winning CounterSpy antispyware, came very late to the antivirus table, only creating its own antivirus engine from the ground up within the last two years, while its rivals boast more than 20 years of antivirus experience. Arriving late has its advantages, however. Traditional antivirus engines have been slow to adapt to emerging threats, especially the blending of antispyware threats with antivirus threats. To bridge the best of traditional antivirus with new cutting-edge thinking, Sunbelt Software hired veteran antivirus expert Joe Wells for a one-year stint to help design a "hybrid" antivirus antispyware engine.
While other standalone antispyware vendors merely added antivirus to their existing offering, Sunbelt Software created an entirely new product, Vipre. Ordinarily new antivirus products, such as Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare, suffer through a few years of "getting the code right." We don't see that here; in our opinion, Vipre has vaulted to the upper third of the antivirus products on the market today. While it remains to be seen how Vipre holds up against the 2009 antivirus offerings, our initial impressions are very good, and should hold up when more established antivirus vendors start releasing their products later in 2008.
Installation
Vipre costs $29.95 for a single user license, $39.95 for a three-user license, and $49.95 to license all the computers in your house. If you are a current CounterSpy v2 customer, you can upgrade for $9.95. There is a 15-day, fully functional, free trial available. Vipre requires Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista; it is not compatible with Windows 95, 98, or ME, Macintosh, or Linux.
The Vipre installation took us a few minutes and did not require a reboot. After the files were installed, a wizard asked a few predictable questions on the following topics: Internet and proxy settings, automatic updates (default is every two hours), active protection setting (High, Medium, Low), joining the Sunbelt threat community to report new threats, scan schedule (default is 1 a.m.), adding Vipre to Windows Security Center (default), disabling Windows Defender (default), and activating and registering for technical support (name and e-mail).
The Vipre interface is one of the cleanest we've seen on any antivirus product. It's intuitive and easy to use. Your system status is displayed along the left-hand window, while the right side displays current worldwide threats and the latest local scan results for your machine. Four tabs across the top take you to Scan, Manage, Tools, and the overview page.
Should you want to remove Vipre, you will need to use the Windows Control Panel's Add and Remove Software feature; Sunbelt Software does not provide an uninstall function. After a reboot we found no traces of Vipre in our system registry or file directory on our test system.
Features
Much of what we like about Vipre is beneath the hood--which is where it should be. The scanning engines are fast and, in our limited testing, accurate. What we like most about Vipre, however, is that it packs a lot of extras--extras that other antivirus products should have but often do not.
In addition to antivirus and antispyware protection, Vipre features other useful tools such as a secure file eraser that writes 1s and 0s over deleted files, a history cleaner that goes beyond just what's in your Internet browser cache, and something called PC Explorer, which reveals processes and services running that are suspect or known to be malicious. Many of these tools are also featured within Sunbelt Software's standalone antispyware product, CounterSpy v2.
Missing from Vipre is firewall protection, which is available in some antivirus software.
Performance
Vipre scored well in both our CNET Labs' Windows XP performance tests, however, there are no public third-party tests that we can point to at this time. On our iTunes test, Vipre was in the leader of the pack at just 1 second above our test system. On our Microsoft Office test, Vipre came in near the middle at 1,378.67 seconds. For scanning a single folder with multiple files, Vipre came in first at 122 seconds. And in boot speed, Vipre again came in first place, with a speedy 28.73 seconds. To find out how we test, see CNET Labs' How we test:software:antivirus.
In terms of protecting your PC, Vipre is too new for us to be able to cite results from independent antivirus testing organizations at this time.
As for antispyware results, CNET Labs tested CounterSpy v2 in November 2007; in March 2008, CNET Reviews named it our Editors' Choice. Vipre uses the antispyware technology found within CounterSpy v2.
Support
Sunbelt Software provides a wealth of support options. We like the contextual Help files--when you are on the Tools page, Help opens to the sections on tools. There is also a list of online help URLs, e-mail help addresses, and a toll-free telephone support available on every Help page, so that if you still can't find the answer, you are welcome to try other areas of support. You can even send feedback on the Help file itself. Unfortunately, telephone support is only available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, so if you have a critical problem on the weekend, you'll have to send an e-mail.
Conclusion
Vipre is a worthy addition to a crowded antivirus field. Sunbelt Software says it will continue to develop CounterSpy as a standalone antispyware product. Future releases of Vipre will probably include Sunbelt Personal Firewall code. However, Sunbelt Software is shying away from calling the resulting product a security suite.

Excellent anti-virus and firewall
Pros: Anti-Virus works great, Firewall does it's job with a minimal footprint. Lots of good features.
Cons: I've been testing Vipre for about 6 months now...can't really find anything I don't like about it.

The very best solution on the market - hands down
Pros: 2 years ahead of competition, Smallest footprint in the industry, American born & supported, High-performance- low-resource protection, 3rd-Gen behavior-based malware detection, ability to set policies by groups, sandbox feature.
Cons: Really no issues.

Software is terrible in a network. Stay away!!
Pros: I suppose it might catch viruses
Cons: We installed this on about a dozen client networks. Nothing but issues. Blue screens, consistent errors, alerts when program would terminate, hanging services, etc. Absolutely terrible. Doesn't work at all on a term server.
Note that I almost never post reviews like this. This one was just so bad I had to come online to warn other IT professionals.

It works very well, and doesn't slow down my computer.
Pros: It has a quick scan and a deep scan. Neither takes too long.
Cons: It doesn't have a firewall, I haven't found anything else that is wrong with it.

Great Value - Wonderful Product
Pros: Light on resources, great customer support, low price
Cons: Nothing that I can see so far

Simply Terrible
Pros: Initial setup is quick
Cons: Endless lock ups and crashes. This thing is terrible. This IS the virus not the solution. Far too many problems with operation, once its installed IT owns and runs your computer and if your lucky once in a while it will let you do something

Best and lightest A.V. software I've ever used!
Pros: The Vipre active protection is so good that even though I have 8 computers in my house and 6 kids using 6 of them, Vipre never finds anything but a couple cookies in its scheduled scans! Active protection stops anything I have seen to date!
Cons: This program does not wash windows, pair socks or make dinner. Those ARE IT'S ONLY CONS!
As far as some of the complaints Ive read about this program, if you are doing system maintenace to the O.S., I absolutely would never attempt that with any firewall or security software running! I have the Vipre suite and it scans all my machines daily. I can encode a DVD with windows movie maker and surf the net, and play a game while it runs on an AMD dual core 4200 gateway without a hiccup, vista 32 bit. With norton 360 I couldnt even surf and listen to MP3s at the same time it was scanning! Plus it never finds anything on it's scans, because the firewall and active protection DONT LET ANYTHING IN! Norton used to find 10 to 60 security problems per day! This is flat out the best security program I have found and their customer support is unparalleled in the software industry!

Good product. Has been very reliable to stop viruses.
Pros: The product has worked wonderfully in regard to stopping trash from coming into my pc. Never had an anti-virus that worked this good.
Cons: I have 4 computers using VIPRE. Risk definitions must be downloaded manually. I have spoken to 3 different tech. people - and not one of them could help me with the problem. I just don't like having to download with this method every 2-3 days.

Wish I had this earlier
Pros: Blazing fast. I can't believe how fast and how little resources this software takes. I used Kaspersky before and the fidbox.dat file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers just kept on growing. At one time, it was 1GB! Two thumbs up Sunbelt.
Cons: None so far.

Gives me back system cycles and RAM.
Pros: It works unobtrusively and updates often, so I have the latest protections. And it doesn't use up my system resources as others are famous for doing.
Cons: Okay, I'm a fan of snappy GUIs and this GUI is pretty plain vanilla. How about soem more bells and whistles, guys?
Oh... You say that would eat up my system resources? Okay. Fuggedaboudit.

Vipre Anti-Virus + Anti-Spyware "ROCKS" !
Pros: Today, in an age when computer operating systems have become cumbersome and large and 3rd party software takes up more system resources, VIPRE by Sunbelt Software gives you peace of mind by protecting your system from malware and viruses all in one.
Cons: None at this time !

The Premium version includes Firewall.
Pros: I liked the easy loading, Tech support (live online) was efficient, integrated Firewall. I'm a novice and tried managing Firewall myself, screwed up, but was able to fix it with Tech Support. First scan even repoted low-risk file sharing programs!
Cons: Hmmm. It look several seconds to load. Not bad.

Where is the customer support???
Pros: I have used norton, macafee, trend mirco, webroot antivirus. Webroot slowed my quad core vista system tremendously...norton and macafee were resource hogs. I wanted to try Vipre antivirus after product review -It does not slow my system down.
Cons: Did not catch Vista 2010 antivrus trojan.....wrecked havoc to my computer.
I emailed and called to leave them a message to call me back...No reply....

Do NOT purchase this software! Read this review first!
Pros: After my experience I can't give you any pros because when your not having a problem, as I didn't for the first 4 months what's to complain about. Now let's move on to the cons, shall we.
Cons: Lack of support on weekends, and no follow-up after phone calls, emails and live chat. Zero response and the malware problems only got worse.
The live chat person Ryan sent me an email with instructions to run some log files to my desktop and then attach them in a reply. I did exactly what was asked. No response and it was now Mar. 1, 2010. I call their 1-800 number, provided them with the support ticket number from Ryan and a guy came on the phone and said I was supposed to run one of the logs twice. I hung up, and ran the log which took 3.5 hours and sent it in.
I got on live chat and got Ryan again and was told he didn't receive two of my email out of five sent. I resent them and he verified receiving them. Ryan said he was forward all the logs and escalate the issue.
As of today, Mar. 3rd none of my emails have been answered, no one at Sunbelt has contacted me. I have had to run a system recovery, reset all my files (I have Carbonite) and I have a trial of McAfee Total Protection which is cleaning up the whole works.
If Sunbelt would have had a better support staff the problems that occurred, were not caught or solved by Vipre, maybe I would not have had to start from scratch. I had all the bells and whistles from Sunbelt installed, they and their crack support staff failed along with the software.
Seek out a better solution and good luck.

This is outstanding software for netbooks.
Pros: The lower overhead on the processor really allows netbooks to shine, compared to other antivirus products
There are advanced tools for the "geeky"(PC explorer) that let you examine where threats may have infiltrated your PC.
Cons: Need daily good internet connections (like most antivirus) to keep definitions up-to-date.
I thought I was having trouble downloading firefox because of Vipre, until I realized I had been spoofed and I was trying to download a file from a page that was made to look like the firefox homepage!.. Vipre saved me from myself. (Note I picked the first page that came up in google with the search term firefox, and assumed it was the right page to download firefox, a mistake any of us in a hurry can make). Summary I have Vipre on 2 PC's, since installing I have had no problems and no contaminations, but a number of "catches". I think this is a great product for netbooks or older computers because of the low overhead, while it's advanced tools would be useful for those who really understand the inner workings of PC's.

Great Product..It just works!
Pros: I used Vipre several times on workstations that both Symantec Endpoint and McAfee failed to either identify or clean Malware. Vipre identified and clean the Malware and is running very nicely.
Cons: Several times I noticed when Vipre was updating it needed a large amount of CPU cycles, but after the update it run with very few.

Pretty good
Pros: Doesn't bog down my desktops and it is easy to manage.
Cons: Lack of firewall leaves you with two options: rely upon the built in windows firewall, or buy another product. I don't like that, but I can live with that trade-off.

Fast and Efficient
Pros: It is very fast and does not interfere in my activities. It does a fantastic job in finding out the viruses and spyware and also removes them efficiently. The interface is very cool.
Cons: There is no firewall protection. It could be a free software.

This product is the best yet.
Pros: Have tried all the free av software and some of the paid. This product installed quickly, updated itself when needed, and cleared any problem if found. The cost for a multi-user license is very reasonable.
Cons: None so far.

Light, fast, effective, feature-rich
Pros: Light, fast, effective, feature-rich, intuitive interface, easy to install, excellent price, can install in all my computers.
Cons: None so far - I hear that it does not have a firewall, but most AV in this price-range don't either.

This is an AV not a suite
Pros: It includes detection of mal that all others need additional spyware progs for. It is fast and transparent. It finds a lot of stuff, maybe more than is there. It is still learning.
You can also buy their Firewall for $9.95 if you need that.
Cons: MAY have a lot of false positives right now. I can't verify that but it is sure finding a lot more than eve3rything else I have run.
Let's not rate an AV against a suite and knock it for not having a firewall. How about mentioning that none (that I am aware of) of the cometition has anti-spyware and anti-malware functions requiring extra cost programs to do the job of Vipre.

User-friendly and fast
Pros: Restored my laptop (running a memory eating competitor) to its normal speed.

Simply Incredible Value .........Purchase Now!
Pros: Combined Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware engine. ! It's ease of use setting up the product and scheduling scans is super simple. And most important it's effective in detection and removal of viruses and malware.
Cons: Some people bemoan the fact that it lacks a firewall, true! but it isn't a security suite. Sunbelt Software the parent company provide a super affordable firewall, and are working on merging Vipre and firewall in the near future.

Vipre is a garbage
Pros: No Pros, Garbage, Garbage
Cons: Loaded Vipre for 15 day trial on my desktop & laptop. Both PC's started locking up
acting like they had a virus. Using Windows XP recovery point, I back recovered my desktop to before Vipre load, everything ok. On my laptop uninstalled, ok.

high potential of getting the first rank among all AVs
Pros: simple , easy to use very light on pc. the most thing i liked is its detection of a trojan hidden on my pc that bitdefender and avast have not detect. still testing it and so far seems to be great
Cons: it does not contain a firewall, and it would be great if it includes the option like avg, an automatic scan for any external device plugged in like a usb for example
out of 64 user reviews
Not what it's marketed to be.
Pros: During the trial period, it worked like it was suppose to.
Quietly in the background without taking up too much resources.
Easy to use.
Cons: Locks the computer up during initial boots for a long time.
Tech. Support recommended I turn off the active scan to solve the problem.
But it does lock up your system a long time especially during initial boot.
Got so bad, call tech support and their recommondation is to turn off active scan. Not sure how that helps during initial boot.
Won't renew subscription.

Fast, simple and inexpensive
Pros: Lots of AV's on the market, many of which are seriously expensiive.
VIPRE is very affordable.
Simple to install
Easy to uninstall, I have found that Some AV's like Bit Defender are almost impossible to remove from your system
Cons: Doesn't include a firewall, This is the only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars
Uses minimal resources and has a small 'footprint' in my system.
Works with Windows 7 even though not dedicated for it yet.

Great start
Pros: New scanning methodology that is promising to be the new way stopping the baddies
Cons: There needs to be independent comparatives with competitors. A review by an independent lab that compares to other AV/malware defense softwares.
or some other reputable reviewing company.

Pros: Ran my Norton program & it found nothing ! Ran Malwarebytes & it found nothing ! Dwnlded Microsoft One Care Live and it found nothing. Ran this trial version & WALLAH FOUND: Rapid Antivirus + 18 cookies + a backdoor program ! a P2P called KaZa
Cons: Its that firewall issue & that their customer service is (m-f) eastern time & i'm on the west coast.

Not Impressed With Vipre
Pros: Can't think of much. It seems to have a generally simple interface. You can talk to technical support without too much hassle but it can get frustrating when you have to keep calling in because of problems.
Cons: Initially, support said that incrimental updates were possible, but it was not true. After waiting some time and trying it again, the incrimental update feature worked somewhat but not nearly as well as Kaspersky AV 7's.
Updated on Mar 4, 2009I would like to add that during the update process, sometimes the progress bar has disappeared. This has happened on two computers while it said it was updating the product, not installing it. This made it impossible to tell how much more needed to be downloaded and therefore give me some idea how much longer I needed to wait. One time, I was told that the reason why or it was probably why the definitions went to 0 was that I had cancelled an update. Oh, so if you happen to cancel an update, apparently there is a chance of corrupting the software. Then I had to start from "scratch" and update the software with a huge definition update which was perhaps around 57 MBs or so.
out of 64 user reviews
Easy Enough To Install > But, Won't Update Definitions
Pros: This could be a really good program.
Cons: However, I can't seem to update definitions and software. Keeps telling me my definitions are out of date (10/28/08 to be precise). I've repeatedly tried to reload software, but with no success.
Updated on Jun 8, 2009I gave up on it. Even called their customer support. They were friendly and patient. But, In the end the program turned out to be havoc for me. Ended up using Avira. Was suggested by someone. Turned out to be more user friendly...will rate this accordingly at a later date

Simply the best solution...ever!
Pros: Great interface for inexperienced users. Great detection of spyware/viruses, and excellent real time monitor. Dont change the active Protection to HIGH unless you area real experienced user b/c it will flag a lot of things that arent bad, initially.
Cons: None!!!! Its the bomb!!!!

Good for your system resources, good for your pocket.!
Pros: Doesn't slow down the OS (Vista SP1 in my case).
Quick, easy, automatic updates & "quick scans".
Easy user interface.
Cheap!
Cons: Can't think of any.
This isn't a con as such... I know it's doing stuff, but I can't tell. I'm so used to the system grinding to a halt (with Norton/Symantec, TrendMicro, and others) that I get worried it ain't working! So I had a few files that I know are "infected" and a few websites that I know download malware, and VIPRE was up to the job. It responded well to the EICAR test files.
I used Trend Micro for a few years and recently it just got too bloated, too many false positives, too many things missed and slowed the system to a crawl.
I also downloaded the free trial of the Sunbelt firewall - it is a bit noisy at first (allow & deny requests) but you can set rules for each allow or deny... or do it each time the "offending" software is requesting access. Now it's as inconspicuous as the anti-virus/anti-spyware!
As for the comment previously about it deleting Explorer - that just doesn't make sense. VIPRE has a good quarantining and alert system, and fully customisable exclude and include options.
I've had no problems with updating, running scans or anything like that.

Does it's fraken job
Pros: Light on resources , proven Anti_Spyware performance of Counterspy included in product. Reasonably Priced.
Cons: A lack of detailed reporting when performing a specific file or folder scan.
No simple incorporated means to upload a suspicious file for further review by Sunbelt.
I am pleased with Vipres overall simplicity.
It does seem to have been designed not to function as the center stage consuming resources like a drunken sailor then wreaking things just for the hell of it.

My machines have come back to life!
Pros: Fast, simple and dosn't get in my way.
Cons: Going to miss the other av products DOS'ng my machines.
At home, I had used Norton, then Symantec products for a long while until I discovered F-Secure which was both faster and effective, though still not to my satisfaction. It was also cheaper. But after a few years, it too started to bog the systems that I use at home. It's licensing scheme worked much better than the Symantec products particularly as I was upgrading & changing my systems constantly over the years.
Now comes Vipre. I have used CounterSpy for many years. I had found it mildly intrusive over the competing AS products and very effective at doing what it was supposed to do as many of my friends and relatives have found out over the years. And now I have both AV and AS in the same package. I can barely tell that it is there, my systems run almost like they did when new. What a major joy it is to run my equipment at home. I can actually postpone some of my planned upgrades and actually get some work done now. At least until I have to go back to work and fight with the system that has McAffee on it. Arrgh!
I really want to give it a 10, but it remains to be seen how effective it is on AV. Should happen soon enough. Friends & family are continually hosing their systems & I hope to try it on those systems.
I was able to upgrade from CounterSpy for what I thought was a great price. I had an unlimited home license & upgraded to the unlimited home license for Vipre for a whopping $9.95. Try that Big Boys! But $49.95 doesn't seem to much either for the unlimited home edition if you didn't have CS. I think it could really use their Firewall included in the package to round it out, but maybe that is asking too much.
I think we have a keeper.
