Sunbelt Software, known best for its award-winning CounterSpy antispyware, came very late to the antivirus table, only creating its own antivirus engine from the ground up within the last two years, while its rivals boast more than 20 years of antivirus experience. Arriving late has its advantages, however. Traditional antivirus engines have been slow to adapt to emerging threats, especially the blending of antispyware threats with antivirus threats. To bridge the best of traditional antivirus with new cutting-edge thinking, Sunbelt Software hired veteran antivirus expert Joe Wells for a one-year stint to help design a "hybrid" antivirus antispyware engine.

While other standalone antispyware vendors merely added antivirus to their existing offering, Sunbelt Software created an entirely new product, Vipre. Ordinarily new antivirus products, such as Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare, suffer through a few years of "getting the code right." We don't see that here; in our opinion, Vipre has vaulted to the upper third of the antivirus products on the market today. While it remains to be seen how Vipre holds up against the 2009 antivirus offerings, our initial impressions are very good, and should hold up when more established antivirus vendors start releasing their products later in 2008.

Installation
Vipre costs $29.95 for a single user license, $39.95 for a three-user license, and $49.95 to license all the computers in your house. If you are a current CounterSpy v2 customer, you can upgrade for $9.95. There is a 15-day, fully functional, free trial available. Vipre requires Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista; it is not compatible with Windows 95, 98, or ME, Macintosh, or Linux.

The Vipre installation took us a few minutes and did not require a reboot. After the files were installed, a wizard asked a few predictable questions on the following topics: Internet and proxy settings, automatic updates (default is every two hours), active protection setting (High, Medium, Low), joining the Sunbelt threat community to report new threats, scan schedule (default is 1 a.m.), adding Vipre to Windows Security Center (default), disabling Windows Defender (default), and activating and registering for technical support (name and e-mail).

The Vipre interface is one of the cleanest we've seen on any antivirus product. It's intuitive and easy to use. Your system status is displayed along the left-hand window, while the right side displays current worldwide threats and the latest local scan results for your machine. Four tabs across the top take you to Scan, Manage, Tools, and the overview page.

Should you want to remove Vipre, you will need to use the Windows Control Panel's Add and Remove Software feature; Sunbelt Software does not provide an uninstall function. After a reboot we found no traces of Vipre in our system registry or file directory on our test system.

Features
Much of what we like about Vipre is beneath the hood--which is where it should be. The scanning engines are fast and, in our limited testing, accurate. What we like most about Vipre, however, is that it packs a lot of extras--extras that other antivirus products should have but often do not.

In addition to antivirus and antispyware protection, Vipre features other useful tools such as a secure file eraser that writes 1s and 0s over deleted files, a history cleaner that goes beyond just what's in your Internet browser cache, and something called PC Explorer, which reveals processes and services running that are suspect or known to be malicious. Many of these tools are also featured within Sunbelt Software's standalone antispyware product, CounterSpy v2.

Missing from Vipre is firewall protection, which is available in some antivirus software.

Performance
Vipre scored well in both our CNET Labs' Windows XP performance tests, however, there are no public third-party tests that we can point to at this time. On our iTunes test, Vipre was in the leader of the pack at just 1 second above our test system. On our Microsoft Office test, Vipre came in near the middle at 1,378.67 seconds. For scanning a single folder with multiple files, Vipre came in first at 122 seconds. And in boot speed, Vipre again came in first place, with a speedy 28.73 seconds. To find out how we test, see CNET Labs' How we test:software:antivirus.

In terms of protecting your PC, Vipre is too new for us to be able to cite results from independent antivirus testing organizations at this time.

As for antispyware results, CNET Labs tested CounterSpy v2 in November 2007; in March 2008, CNET Reviews named it our Editors' Choice. Vipre uses the antispyware technology found within CounterSpy v2.

Support
Sunbelt Software provides a wealth of support options. We like the contextual Help files--when you are on the Tools page, Help opens to the sections on tools. There is also a list of online help URLs, e-mail help addresses, and a toll-free telephone support available on every Help page, so that if you still can't find the answer, you are welcome to try other areas of support. You can even send feedback on the Help file itself. Unfortunately, telephone support is only available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, so if you have a critical problem on the weekend, you'll have to send an e-mail.

Conclusion
Vipre is a worthy addition to a crowded antivirus field. Sunbelt Software says it will continue to develop CounterSpy as a standalone antispyware product. Future releases of Vipre will probably include Sunbelt Personal Firewall code. However, Sunbelt Software is shying away from calling the resulting product a security suite.

Excellent anti-virus and firewall

Pros: Anti-Virus works great, Firewall does it's job with a minimal footprint. Lots of good features.

Cons: I've been testing Vipre for about 6 months now...can't really find anything I don't like about it.

Review: I've been a computer tech since the DOS days, I have a shop in a college town and get plenty of work from all the people who trust McAffee and Norton products...of all the paid anti-virus I have yet to have one come into my shop that has Vipre installed. It may not be permanent but for now Vipre gets my vote for top dog.

This anti virus problem sucks!

Pros: Nothing good to say about this so call great program VIPRE

Cons: There is no uninstall, once this junk is in your computer, its there for life! just collected cookies not viruses.

Review: I installed this junk "Vipre" on my pc because i was told it was a very good program. WRONG! this program is the worse i have ever had the horrible experience of installing, not only did it not pick up viruses, there was a software that it wanted to install and when i did my whole computer froze up completely, i could not shut it down, it crashed, i lost many photos and important documents. I had to have a professional person come over to fix my pc, which was very costly. Also the very first time i contacted customer service it was a total nightmare. these people know nothing of their own product. I would suggest to anyone that is considering purchasing this product...do it at your own risk...as the saying goes "DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU'!

The very best solution on the market - hands down

Pros: 2 years ahead of competition, Smallest footprint in the industry, American born & supported, High-performance- low-resource protection, 3rd-Gen behavior-based malware detection, ability to set policies by groups, sandbox feature.

Cons: Really no issues.

Review: This is the absolute best all around solution available. Go ahead and try the others, then give this a try. You will not be disappointed.

Software is terrible in a network. Stay away!!

Pros: I suppose it might catch viruses

Cons: We installed this on about a dozen client networks. Nothing but issues. Blue screens, consistent errors, alerts when program would terminate, hanging services, etc. Absolutely terrible. Doesn't work at all on a term server.

Review: I would strongly suggest you stay away. We were impressed with reviews and the fact that it catches good software. We are now going back and uninstalling this from every client network due to nothing but issues in every instance. When we uninstall, most of the PCs bluescreen and we have to manually clean up the agent. I wish I'd read a review like this before wasting so much time and money on a really poorly written piece of software!
Note that I almost never post reviews like this. This one was just so bad I had to come online to warn other IT professionals.

It works very well, and doesn't slow down my computer.

Pros: It has a quick scan and a deep scan. Neither takes too long.

Cons: It doesn't have a firewall, I haven't found anything else that is wrong with it.

Review: I used several different products trying to find a problem I had, and the counterspy was the only one that found it.

Great Value - Wonderful Product

Pros: Light on resources, great customer support, low price

Cons: Nothing that I can see so far

Review: I've been using this product on all six of my machines with no problems. I've installed it on a dozen or so machines in the "Active Adult Community" in which I live. Everyone is very pleased with this product. Despite one negative review on customer support, I have found the few questions I've presented to be met with aclarity and speed. This product is a very cost effective product, running well on XP, Vista and Win7 boxes. Of course, I used Win OneCare before, and this doesn't remind me to do periodic backups! Drat. The only bad thing I could think to say.

Simply Terrible

Pros: Initial setup is quick

Cons: Endless lock ups and crashes. This thing is terrible. This IS the virus not the solution. Far too many problems with operation, once its installed IT owns and runs your computer and if your lucky once in a while it will let you do something

Review: Considering the hassle and problems this would be over priced if it were free. Personally Id be ashamed if I put out a product like this

Best and lightest A.V. software I've ever used!

Pros: The Vipre active protection is so good that even though I have 8 computers in my house and 6 kids using 6 of them, Vipre never finds anything but a couple cookies in its scheduled scans! Active protection stops anything I have seen to date!

Cons: This program does not wash windows, pair socks or make dinner. Those ARE IT'S ONLY CONS!

Review: It requires no action on the part of the user, I did however tweak, play and frolic through its features, and I found that it doesn't have as many as Norton 360! Which is a good thing! It simply works, without chewing up resources and getting bloated over time. I purchased a site license for our 9 computers counting the laptop I use at my private practice cheaper than a 3 user license of Norton.
As far as some of the complaints Ive read about this program, if you are doing system maintenace to the O.S., I absolutely would never attempt that with any firewall or security software running! I have the Vipre suite and it scans all my machines daily. I can encode a DVD with windows movie maker and surf the net, and play a game while it runs on an AMD dual core 4200 gateway without a hiccup, vista 32 bit. With norton 360 I couldnt even surf and listen to MP3s at the same time it was scanning! Plus it never finds anything on it's scans, because the firewall and active protection DONT LET ANYTHING IN! Norton used to find 10 to 60 security problems per day! This is flat out the best security program I have found and their customer support is unparalleled in the software industry!

Good product. Has been very reliable to stop viruses.

Pros: The product has worked wonderfully in regard to stopping trash from coming into my pc. Never had an anti-virus that worked this good.

Cons: I have 4 computers using VIPRE. Risk definitions must be downloaded manually. I have spoken to 3 different tech. people - and not one of them could help me with the problem. I just don't like having to download with this method every 2-3 days.

Wish I had this earlier

Pros: Blazing fast. I can't believe how fast and how little resources this software takes. I used Kaspersky before and the fidbox.dat file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers just kept on growing. At one time, it was 1GB! Two thumbs up Sunbelt.

Cons: None so far.

Review: I like this av software because it is fast and does not take a lot of my resources.

Gives me back system cycles and RAM.

Pros: It works unobtrusively and updates often, so I have the latest protections. And it doesn't use up my system resources as others are famous for doing.

Cons: Okay, I'm a fan of snappy GUIs and this GUI is pretty plain vanilla. How about soem more bells and whistles, guys?
Oh... You say that would eat up my system resources? Okay. Fuggedaboudit.

Review: Since cybercriminals are the scum of the swamps, the less time I have to spend protecting myself the better. So an AV product needs to be murderous and unobtrrusive. This one is.

Vipre Anti-Virus + Anti-Spyware "ROCKS" !

Pros: Today, in an age when computer operating systems have become cumbersome and large and 3rd party software takes up more system resources, VIPRE by Sunbelt Software gives you peace of mind by protecting your system from malware and viruses all in one.

Cons: None at this time !

Review: Every computer needs Antivirus and Antispyware protection. Few programs offer both as VIPRE does. It has the CounterSPY malware engine and great AntiVirus protection in one package. It is very user friendly and low on overhead on system resources. Updates are automatic and fast. It has a price point that any home or corporate user will like. Instead of running (2) or more packages to catch your viruses and malware, this is the ALL IN ONE solution. It does not hang or crash your system as other products do like Norton/Symantec, Trend Micro and McAfee (who are targeted by Virus and Malware Writers).

Pros: Excellent. Fast Absolutely safe. Just to many to list And It now has a Firewall for 64bit as well. Best I seen and I tried most of them

Cons: No Cons at all.

Review: Well worth a try. I would buy it at twice the price. I'm running it on all our comps now and even on our Kids comps and they never had a problem with Viruses or Spyware, the new firewall also helps heaps.

The Premium version includes Firewall.

Pros: I liked the easy loading, Tech support (live online) was efficient, integrated Firewall. I'm a novice and tried managing Firewall myself, screwed up, but was able to fix it with Tech Support. First scan even repoted low-risk file sharing programs!

Cons: Hmmm. It look several seconds to load. Not bad.

Review: I love this. The premium product is integrated with Firewall, something apparently lacking in preciously reviewed versions.

Where is the customer support???

Pros: I have used norton, macafee, trend mirco, webroot antivirus. Webroot slowed my quad core vista system tremendously...norton and macafee were resource hogs. I wanted to try Vipre antivirus after product review -It does not slow my system down.

Cons: Did not catch Vista 2010 antivrus trojan.....wrecked havoc to my computer.
I emailed and called to leave them a message to call me back...No reply....

Review: I am now reformating my computer which is costing me more time and money. I hate companies that have poor customer service, being a business owner myself.

Do NOT purchase this software! Read this review first!

Pros: After my experience I can't give you any pros because when your not having a problem, as I didn't for the first 4 months what's to complain about. Now let's move on to the cons, shall we.

Cons: Lack of support on weekends, and no follow-up after phone calls, emails and live chat. Zero response and the malware problems only got worse.

Review: Feb. 25, 2010 I start noticing that Vipre is blocking and quarantining Trojans, exploiters and some other malware. This is good. In manage the software you can delete the quarantined malware from your computer, which I did. This start occurring over and over on the 25th so I can't Sunbelt Software via their contact form method. By Sunday I had not received a response (Feb. 28) so I tried their live chat to find out they don't have staff on the weekends so if you have a problem too bad.

The live chat person Ryan sent me an email with instructions to run some log files to my desktop and then attach them in a reply. I did exactly what was asked. No response and it was now Mar. 1, 2010. I call their 1-800 number, provided them with the support ticket number from Ryan and a guy came on the phone and said I was supposed to run one of the logs twice. I hung up, and ran the log which took 3.5 hours and sent it in.

I got on live chat and got Ryan again and was told he didn't receive two of my email out of five sent. I resent them and he verified receiving them. Ryan said he was forward all the logs and escalate the issue.

As of today, Mar. 3rd none of my emails have been answered, no one at Sunbelt has contacted me. I have had to run a system recovery, reset all my files (I have Carbonite) and I have a trial of McAfee Total Protection which is cleaning up the whole works.

If Sunbelt would have had a better support staff the problems that occurred, were not caught or solved by Vipre, maybe I would not have had to start from scratch. I had all the bells and whistles from Sunbelt installed, they and their crack support staff failed along with the software.

Seek out a better solution and good luck.

This is outstanding software for netbooks.

Pros: The lower overhead on the processor really allows netbooks to shine, compared to other antivirus products
There are advanced tools for the "geeky"(PC explorer) that let you examine where threats may have infiltrated your PC.

Cons: Need daily good internet connections (like most antivirus) to keep definitions up-to-date.

Review: It has prevented numerous virus and trojan attempts when connected to my business network. My office has been contaminated twice, with Norton Antivirus (09 version with updates) not even being able to fix the problem. The scanning process with Norton antivirus was slower than the spread of the trojans. Vipre stops it before it starts.
I thought I was having trouble downloading firefox because of Vipre, until I realized I had been spoofed and I was trying to download a file from a page that was made to look like the firefox homepage!.. Vipre saved me from myself. (Note I picked the first page that came up in google with the search term firefox, and assumed it was the right page to download firefox, a mistake any of us in a hurry can make). Summary I have Vipre on 2 PC's, since installing I have had no problems and no contaminations, but a number of "catches". I think this is a great product for netbooks or older computers because of the low overhead, while it's advanced tools would be useful for those who really understand the inner workings of PC's.

Great Product..It just works!

Pros: I used Vipre several times on workstations that both Symantec Endpoint and McAfee failed to either identify or clean Malware. Vipre identified and clean the Malware and is running very nicely.

Cons: Several times I noticed when Vipre was updating it needed a large amount of CPU cycles, but after the update it run with very few.

Review: Vipre does a great job on Malware and doesn't slow the workstations down. I will be moving my customers to the VIPRE product.

Pretty good

Pros: Doesn't bog down my desktops and it is easy to manage.

Cons: Lack of firewall leaves you with two options: rely upon the built in windows firewall, or buy another product. I don't like that, but I can live with that trade-off.

Review: Moved 200~ desktops off of Symantec Endpoint Protection to Vipre. So far so good. Given my small sample size, so far I see no difference in detection & cleaning rates. I do see a performance improvement on some of my lower-end desktops, and the management UI is a vast improvement over Symantec's.

Hassle-Free Anti-Virus

Pros: FAST, easy to use, setup for auto-scanning is easy, no false alarms

Cons: none so far

Review: After using AVG for a few years I was tired of it. I'd heard lots of good things about VIPRE so I decided to switch, also getting Sunbelt Personal Firewall in the process. Both applications run with no interference and no false alarms. I was so used to getting 50 million alerts from AVG that I was worried maybe it wasn't catching anything, but it has given me a few alerts, and blocked anything from getting in flawlessly. It's not that it doesn't see them, it just sorts through things much better than anything else I've ever used. I was initially looking at eset, which works great too (my dad uses it for his computers) but this was reported as being even faster, and I got a great deal on them both from chris.pirillo.com . Pick this up and you won't be disappointed. You'll finally be able to forget about viruses. That's not to say this will be all you need though. Pick up sunbelt personal firewall and browse smart. I personally use firefox with the web of trust app (among many others) and I've never had a problem in 3 years of having this computer. Only a handful of times have I gotten something harmful, but it was always taken care of before it was a problem. Bottom line: great product, but no matter what software you end up getting, you still need to be proactive.

Pros: It ran quick, catches many malware apps

Cons: After having it for about 6 months, it slow the computer down worst than symantec, uses alot of CPU

This product is the best yet.

Pros: Have tried all the free av software and some of the paid. This product installed quickly, updated itself when needed, and cleared any problem if found. The cost for a multi-user license is very reasonable.

Cons: None so far.

Review: Purchased Sunbelt Software CounterSpy and updated to Vipre when it was introduced. Had some minor issues but they were resolved quickly by Sunbelt. I also purchased Kerio Firewall and updated to Sunbelt Personal Firewall (SPF). Now I am using Vipre Professional with Firewall, the beta version which has incorporated SPF. So far I have had no big problems. Since this is beta software I noticed that there were some small differences that have been fixed since the initial use. The price is good, and if you buy Vipre and SPF you get a nice savings. Remember that Vipre Professional will be out soon and it has SPF built in.

Finally a Stellar U.S. Based AV Solution!

Pros: This product caught an piece of malware I have never seen before.

Cons: None at this time.

Review: After experiencing issues with my current AV solution that has no U.S. based tech support, I had to uninstall it until I hear back from them via email. I considered VIPRE. Was able to reach someone right away to answer my questions! They were friendly and connected me right away and I was able to have great conversation with tech support. I am excitied for an AV solution that is that its World Wide Headquarters in the United States. I am seriously considering changing to VIPRE and eating the cost of the several months I have left on the subscription for my other AV solution which is also a great company that I have used for years, they just lack U.S. based tech support via online chat and phone. I am sold on VIPRE!

Light, fast, effective, feature-rich

Pros: Light, fast, effective, feature-rich, intuitive interface, easy to install, excellent price, can install in all my computers.

Cons: None so far - I hear that it does not have a firewall, but most AV in this price-range don't either.

Review: I had Bit Defender - left because their customer service does not exist and when you get them, they have a bad attitude. I got Vipre on sale for $33 with Free shipping. It was was easy to install. It was fast to scan. It does not slowdown my computers. My computers works much faster now and I don't need an anti-malware program. I have 5 computers, so their "all computers in your household" license is great. . So far, it would say it is excellent.

This is an AV not a suite

Pros: It includes detection of mal that all others need additional spyware progs for. It is fast and transparent. It finds a lot of stuff, maybe more than is there. It is still learning.
You can also buy their Firewall for $9.95 if you need that.

Cons: MAY have a lot of false positives right now. I can't verify that but it is sure finding a lot more than eve3rything else I have run.

Review: I can't recommend anything else right now, since I would have to recommend 3 or 4 products to do the job Vipre is doing and for the price it is doing it for, no way.
Let's not rate an AV against a suite and knock it for not having a firewall. How about mentioning that none (that I am aware of) of the cometition has anti-spyware and anti-malware functions requiring extra cost programs to do the job of Vipre.

Simply Incredible Value .........Purchase Now!

Pros: Combined Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware engine. ! It's ease of use setting up the product and scheduling scans is super simple. And most important it's effective in detection and removal of viruses and malware.

Cons: Some people bemoan the fact that it lacks a firewall, true! but it isn't a security suite. Sunbelt Software the parent company provide a super affordable firewall, and are working on merging Vipre and firewall in the near future.

Review: I've been using the product and firewall for three months and couldn't be happier. And as previously stated their Sales, Service and Support set a benchmark for a customer focused experience. And as a footnote i've used Avira, Avast, Norton, Zone Alarm and G-Data amongst others in the passed. Vipre is the least taxing on memory and cpu resources. It simply works! A five star rating for a five star organization. Sincerely...Zron

Vipre is a garbage

Pros: No Pros, Garbage, Garbage

Cons: Loaded Vipre for 15 day trial on my desktop & laptop. Both PC's started locking up
acting like they had a virus. Using Windows XP recovery point, I back recovered my desktop to before Vipre load, everything ok. On my laptop uninstalled, ok.

Review: Vipre is a VIRUS

high potential of getting the first rank among all AVs

Pros: simple , easy to use very light on pc. the most thing i liked is its detection of a trojan hidden on my pc that bitdefender and avast have not detect. still testing it and so far seems to be great

Cons: it does not contain a firewall, and it would be great if it includes the option like avg, an automatic scan for any external device plugged in like a usb for example

Review: as i mentioned before it's a very easy software to use ,simple and very light. it has a high detection of viruses despite of the short period of usin it so far. the setup of settigs are very clear and easy, there's almost no room for hesitating in taking any decision. it's important to mention that when i click on my computer and choose a drive and right click on it, to scan it this option does not exist. i have to open the software and choose the drive from there to scan it. among the AV i tried before like AVG, i had the option to set it automaticly to scan devices right after being inserted like a usb device. vipre does not have this option. i have experienced openning folders and files from an external HD, and after finishing, i realised that i forgot to scan it before i went thru it, and when i decided to scan this HD, viper detected 2 trojans. i prefered if it was like avg with it's automatic scan on insertion.to mention also that a firewall like with avira free AV would be great too. briefly i may say that with these issues to be fixed this product is great, i intend to buy it and install it on my 3 pcs hopping it will get better and better very soon. the only question i have is why this product is not mentioned among the other known products till now?

Not what it's marketed to be.

Pros: During the trial period, it worked like it was suppose to.
Quietly in the background without taking up too much resources.
Easy to use.

Cons: Locks the computer up during initial boots for a long time.
Tech. Support recommended I turn off the active scan to solve the problem.

Review: Product was marketed to be a antivirus + antispyware product that doesn't hijack your system and keep you waiting on it to finish it's job.
But it does lock up your system a long time especially during initial boot.
Got so bad, call tech support and their recommondation is to turn off active scan. Not sure how that helps during initial boot.

Won't renew subscription.

A really sweet product!

Pros: Quick, simple installation and great value for the money.

Cons: Nothing at all.

Review: Downloaded, paid, installed, updated virus database and did first scan in less than 30 minutes. Running Vista on an old Dell Optiplex. Communicated with Vista security flawlessly. Really like it's easy to understand interface.

Fast, simple and inexpensive

Pros: Lots of AV's on the market, many of which are seriously expensiive.
VIPRE is very affordable.
Simple to install
Easy to uninstall, I have found that Some AV's like Bit Defender are almost impossible to remove from your system

Cons: Doesn't include a firewall, This is the only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars

Review: Simple, affordable and effective. Would be even better with a firewall.
Uses minimal resources and has a small 'footprint' in my system.
Works with Windows 7 even though not dedicated for it yet.

Great start

Pros: New scanning methodology that is promising to be the new way stopping the baddies

Cons: There needs to be independent comparatives with competitors. A review by an independent lab that compares to other AV/malware defense softwares.

Review: I look forward to the evolution of this product, but I will not be renewing my subscription to Vipre enterprise until they are evaluated by http://www.av-comparatives.org/
or some other reputable reviewing company.

Fabulous ! IT FOUND WHAT THE OTHERS DIDNT

Pros: Ran my Norton program & it found nothing ! Ran Malwarebytes & it found nothing ! Dwnlded Microsoft One Care Live and it found nothing. Ran this trial version & WALLAH FOUND: Rapid Antivirus + 18 cookies + a backdoor program ! a P2P called KaZa

Cons: Its that firewall issue & that their customer service is (m-f) eastern time & i'm on the west coast.

Review: I really liked it considering everything else I've tried or paid for-... hasn't found what VIPRE has found. AS far as I'm concerned Norton must be on vacation.

Not Impressed With Vipre

Pros: Can't think of much. It seems to have a generally simple interface. You can talk to technical support without too much hassle but it can get frustrating when you have to keep calling in because of problems.

Cons: Initially, support said that incrimental updates were possible, but it was not true. After waiting some time and trying it again, the incrimental update feature worked somewhat but not nearly as well as Kaspersky AV 7's.

Review: My main problem has been updates. I suggest that you don't try it if you have a dial-up Internet connection because of the problems with updating it. It is also my impression that the update system and the Update Progress window needs to get the bugs worked out.

Updated on Mar 4, 2009

I would like to add that during the update process, sometimes the progress bar has disappeared. This has happened on two computers while it said it was updating the product, not installing it. This made it impossible to tell how much more needed to be downloaded and therefore give me some idea how much longer I needed to wait. One time, I was told that the reason why or it was probably why the definitions went to 0 was that I had cancelled an update. Oh, so if you happen to cancel an update, apparently there is a chance of corrupting the software. Then I had to start from "scratch" and update the software with a huge definition update which was perhaps around 57 MBs or so.

Easy Enough To Install > But, Won't Update Definitions

Pros: This could be a really good program.

Cons: However, I can't seem to update definitions and software. Keeps telling me my definitions are out of date (10/28/08 to be precise). I've repeatedly tried to reload software, but with no success.

Review: Most ratings here were favorable. But, I must be the exception. To me, a software program, whether it be antivirus, gaming, etc. Should be user friendly not user aggravating. Technical support was good. Got a e-mail response the same day. However, if it rectifies nothing. I suppose it has no use.

Updated on Jun 8, 2009

I gave up on it. Even called their customer support. They were friendly and patient. But, In the end the program turned out to be havoc for me. Ended up using Avira. Was suggested by someone. Turned out to be more user friendly...will rate this accordingly at a later date

Simply the best solution...ever!

Pros: Great interface for inexperienced users. Great detection of spyware/viruses, and excellent real time monitor. Dont change the active Protection to HIGH unless you area real experienced user b/c it will flag a lot of things that arent bad, initially.

Cons: None!!!! Its the bomb!!!!

Review: Great solution!! I experimented with the "HIGH" setting and it is aggressive, and my explorer.exe was flagged. The "MEDIUM" is best and recommended, and is the default setting, so there is no worries about these kind of issues. I haven't got any false flagging of anything important after I changed the setting back to "MEDIUM." The only reason to set it to "HIGH" is to scan a severally infected computer, other than that, you should leave it the way it installed itself. Vipre is a very efficient program and the best I have ever used, period! From free solutions to paid solutions, I have tried a lot in my spyware/virus PC cleanup days and VIPRE is the BEST in removing ALL threats!!

Good for your system resources, good for your pocket.!

Pros: Doesn't slow down the OS (Vista SP1 in my case).
Quick, easy, automatic updates & "quick scans".
Easy user interface.
Cheap!

Cons: Can't think of any.

Review: I signed up for the 15 day free trial, thinking I'd spend a few months trying a few different free trials from various vendors to see which was best. I tried Kaspersky and AVG, then this one. But it is so good, so inconspicuous, that I've decided not to bother with the others and just keep this one.

This isn't a con as such... I know it's doing stuff, but I can't tell. I'm so used to the system grinding to a halt (with Norton/Symantec, TrendMicro, and others) that I get worried it ain't working! So I had a few files that I know are "infected" and a few websites that I know download malware, and VIPRE was up to the job. It responded well to the EICAR test files.

I used Trend Micro for a few years and recently it just got too bloated, too many false positives, too many things missed and slowed the system to a crawl.

I also downloaded the free trial of the Sunbelt firewall - it is a bit noisy at first (allow & deny requests) but you can set rules for each allow or deny... or do it each time the "offending" software is requesting access. Now it's as inconspicuous as the anti-virus/anti-spyware!

As for the comment previously about it deleting Explorer - that just doesn't make sense. VIPRE has a good quarantining and alert system, and fully customisable exclude and include options.

I've had no problems with updating, running scans or anything like that.

Does it's fraken job

Pros: Light on resources , proven Anti_Spyware performance of Counterspy included in product. Reasonably Priced.

Cons: A lack of detailed reporting when performing a specific file or folder scan.

No simple incorporated means to upload a suspicious file for further review by Sunbelt.

Review: As one who has many machine both personal and networked for business I more than once have seen AV/AS product tear the heart out of uncontaminated properly functioning machines.. both in terms of resources and eating the OS or progs without cause.

I am pleased with Vipres overall simplicity.

It does seem to have been designed not to function as the center stage consuming resources like a drunken sailor then wreaking things just for the hell of it.

Very poor virus definition update

Pros: No comment.

Cons: Problem on Vipre risk definition update has not been solved by Sunbelt Software.

Review: I downloaded the trial version to see for myself the supposedly "high performance security software that doesn't slow your computer down" but was highly disappointed by the inability of the software to update 'risk definition' properly. I checked several forums and found out that several users had the same problem. The solution given by supposedly employee of Sunbelt is to update the definitions manually. Why is there a need to do this the first time you install the AV on your PC? Why can it not update itself like the rest of the internet security and AV on the market?

Didn't prevent our computer from being hijacked

Pros: Easy to install. Easy to use. Doesn't clog your computer

Cons: Didn't prevent our computer from being hijacked on two occasions (trojans and adware)

Review: I was very excited about VIPRE when I first found out about it and was very pleased for the first month that I had it. I switched to it from Symantec Professional only because Symantec was bogging down my system. I never had a virus problem with Symantec. I had the software set to update very 2 hours plus run a Deep Scan (as opposed to a Quick Scan) daily. Unfortunately, after about 6 weeks my computer contracted a trojan downloader and adware (problems with multiple pop-ups and it corrupted my Windows Update). I had to take my computer and have the entire thing wiped and Windows reinstall. I have had my computer back for 3 weeks now only to find that I have another problem (more trojans, adware, and hijackers). VIPRE picked up the problems on the computer and said that they were quarantined and removed but they keep reappearing. I am going to have to take my computer in again. Unfortunately VIPRE does not seem to be powerful enough to block the most recent trojans so they can't get on your computer in the first place and once they are there, it isn't capable of completely removing them. In case you are wondering, I do have a hardware firewall. I'm seriously considering putting Symantec back on my computer again because I never had a problem with it in terms of viruses.

Pros: It´s a realy fast AV thats don´t needs much of your computers resources. Many options but is very user kind.

Cons: Haven´t found any yet.

Another Great Product From Sunbelt

Pros: Noe a resource hog. Love the active protection. Can't beat the price. Updates every 2 hours. Fast scan time

Cons: Some say no firewall, but I already use one.

Review: I have kept many viruses and malware on my pc to test certain programs. This one past with flying colors. Out of 132 viruses and malware programs I threw at it. It only missed 1.. Does not take up many megs of ram. This is good for people that don't have allot of ram.
I also like the auto updates for every 2 hours. I don't give many things 4 stars, but it is worth every star

Pros: No system hog, updates no problem, fastscanning, excellent replys on 2 minor problems.

Vipre delivers just exactly the authors indicate - great protection and a small footprint.

Pros: The product automatically updates definitions and scans for mal-ware in the background and I have experienced absolutely no slowdown. The authors live up to their hype.

Cons: Would like to have an integrated Firewall.

Review: The package is the best I have found. There are more well-known security packages, but none that I have tried can beat VIPRE's footprint - there is absolutely no impact on my system's performance.

Caveat Emptor!

Pros: Very fast and light on resources.

Cons: Does not recognize parts of the Windows OS

Review: I was doing a repair install on my Windows system, and Vipre flagged Explorer.exe. I was not expecting explorer to be doing something, so I denied it. Vipre then took the extreme step of not just denying it this one time, it deleted it from my system. I then had to do a complete reinstall of Windows.

Great, neat, simple. Vipre it. I hope it becomes a household brand.

Pros: Simple, configurable, neat, clean. It works. It's not norton or avg. It's new.

Cons: Where's the systray icon? It only appears when there are scan results to attend to.

Review: Hey, as long as it's new, built from scratch, has a 2 year r&d behind it, is from sunbelt, it's good enough for me. They say it's not bloated, uses less memory, but I wouldn't know for sure. Vipre, not a great name yet, unlike the fat, windows-drowners norton, avg, works like a charm. I've purchased a 1 year as soon as I saw download.com's front page on 5/aug/2008. I've always been using all the free and trialware antiviruses and this is the first time I've purchased any software ever! I was going to purchase avira's 20 euro antivirus on 4/aug/2008, but I'm so glad I didn't. Vipre's tech support rocks.

Poor - Does not support other OS's that Enterprises may be using.

Pros: None that I see.

Cons: Alot - Does not support other OS's that Enterprises may be using.

Review: Since it does not support the earlier versions of Windows which there are still a huge number out there, and it does not support Novell, Mac or Linux, what real good is it. There are a huge number of Novell servers, and Linux servers out there and it is major problem finding new products that will support them. Symantec Enterpise still supports Novell, F-Prot supports Linux and AVG still supports earlier versions of windows. Alot of companies cannot afford to change there Enterprise AV / Anti spyware without good reason, and just because it might be a little faster is not a good reason.

My machines have come back to life!

Pros: Fast, simple and dosn't get in my way.

Cons: Going to miss the other av products DOS'ng my machines.

Review: I appreciate this av more and more every day. IT just removed the Symantec AV and replaced it with McAffe. I thought my laptop was unusable before. Boy was I mistaken. Who are the idiots that came up with the clever idea that simply slowing the computer down to the point of uselessness is the only way to prevent virus infections? It works. I won't use that laptop anymore. If I won't turn it on, it won't get infected! Thanks you very clever AV guys.
At home, I had used Norton, then Symantec products for a long while until I discovered F-Secure which was both faster and effective, though still not to my satisfaction. It was also cheaper. But after a few years, it too started to bog the systems that I use at home. It's licensing scheme worked much better than the Symantec products particularly as I was upgrading & changing my systems constantly over the years.
Now comes Vipre. I have used CounterSpy for many years. I had found it mildly intrusive over the competing AS products and very effective at doing what it was supposed to do as many of my friends and relatives have found out over the years. And now I have both AV and AS in the same package. I can barely tell that it is there, my systems run almost like they did when new. What a major joy it is to run my equipment at home. I can actually postpone some of my planned upgrades and actually get some work done now. At least until I have to go back to work and fight with the system that has McAffee on it. Arrgh!
I really want to give it a 10, but it remains to be seen how effective it is on AV. Should happen soon enough. Friends & family are continually hosing their systems & I hope to try it on those systems.
I was able to upgrade from CounterSpy for what I thought was a great price. I had an unlimited home license & upgraded to the unlimited home license for Vipre for a whopping $9.95. Try that Big Boys! But $49.95 doesn't seem to much either for the unlimited home edition if you didn't have CS. I think it could really use their Firewall included in the package to round it out, but maybe that is asking too much.
I think we have a keeper.

Very impressed

Pros: To many to list here

Cons: None at this time

Review: Was running NOD32 SMART SECURITY,which I thought was the very best until my daughter download a music file, also downloaded a rogue security program called ANTISPYWARE MASTER. This is some bad spyware believe me. NOD32 SMART SECURITY what a piece of crap,it couldn't even find the spyware or stop it from running on my system. I was running counterspy in the pass but deleted the program due to trouble updating. I decided to run counterspy again and ran a scan, within a few seconds it found the spyware and removed it. If VIPRE has that kind of detection build into the program its time to upgrade now. Downloaded VIPRE and really like it. Also downloaded the updated firewall that is much improved over the last version. Looks like sunbelt software was thinking outside the box on VIPRE. Excellent job,Thank you. Buck
