"Unlimited long distance without having to find a good cell area."

4 stars  | on by flagatorfan

Pros

Cheap, unlimited long distance.

Cons

Call quality while surfing, proximity to modem, obviously doesn't work when power is out.

I must first admit that I have not tried any other VoIP. Overall, I am happy with Vonage. I do wish I could find a land line company that would provide unlimited long distance cheaper than $50. In the meantime, I will continue to use Vonage. The call quality on Vonage is good. Unless of course you are surfing the internet. Then at times, you will find that there is a huge delay in your voice being transmitted, or it is simply not transmitted at all. Another downfall of this service, as it is with all VoIP services is the proxmity with which your phone, or cordless base unit must be to your modem. This could become troublesome depending on where you place your broadband modem. And as previously stated, don't consider this service, if you are in a location with frequent power outages. Even though it is obvious it should probably still be stated. No power, no internet service. No internet service, no phone service. Keep a cell phone charged and handy. One plus I must give that I wasn't sure about before I started the service, was whether or not it would work with a cordless phone. It does. My one suggestion; make sure that the frequency of your cordless phone is different from your wireless network, as you will have interference. Even with the problems, (which I can't say is specific to Vonage) I still recommend this service.

"Avoid this service"

Cons

dropped calls, unauthorized cancellation fees even within 30 days

Summary

I had hoped some of the problems discussed in the older reviews had been fixed, but that hasn't happened. Within 3 weeks I knew the service wasn't up to expectations. Cancelled service and still got hit with $200 cancellation fee. All the billing rep said was "challenge us ... Read full review

"Poor Customer Service Strips Away Any Positive"

Pros

Poor Customer Service Strips Away Any Positive

Cons

As I told countless Customer Service Reps as I progressed up their chain, the cheap service draws customers but their nonexistant customer service will cause them to lose in the end.

I did not have service for two months as I went back and forth with everyone I could contact in the company. All the way up to their tech management, I was being told the problem with my service was a power adapter. However, as I kept repeating to all who would listen: "I have a light on the unit...it isnt the power...". Not being an electrician, I agreed to wait 2 weeks for them to ship a replacement power adapter to me. Guess what: DIDNT WORK! I called to try and get the 2 months credited back to me, they wouldnt do it. I even spoke to management who claimed no one has the authority to credit an account. When I finally had enough and canceled the account, they charged me another $40 termination fee, even though I had bought all equipment myself from Best Buy. If they are giving you the equipment in turn for a multi-year/month contract, no problem, but in this case they give you nothing, yet charge you when you cancel. I'm filing a complaint with the BBB and posting everywhere possible to all future consumers: Do not use Vonage. I'll train pigeons before I return to Vonage service.
