"Excellent overall value" on by clarkeworld
Pros: Price, build quality, Built-in HD tuner, bang-for-the-buck
Cons: Need to spend time "tweaking" picture to get it right
Summary: I do not fully agree with the CNET review about picture quality, I think they did not take the time to adjust the image quality to find that this TV can produce stunning images. It took me about an hour to get the picture quality right. The images will look "washed out" at first, but making adjustments to the contrast, color temp and brightness can go a long way on making the images look very good. OTA HD ,using the built-in tuner, looks fantastic. I watched the Sunday Night Football Redskins vs Cowboys on NBC and it blew me away. Made my older JVC 56" widescreen HD rear CRT TV look...well..old. This new Westinghouse TV is in my bedroom and the wife is very happy.
Overall this is an excellent value (I paid $1259.00 at Crutchfield).
Read the review by HDTVexpert that convinced me to buy the TV.

"good enough, especially for the price" on by light_bulb
Pros: Good HD picture, build in DVD, small footprint
Cons: anamorphic DVD picture, poor standard tv picture
Summary: I'd been researching tvs for several months and haven’t been thrilled with any of them. Even the Pioneer Elite has a pixely look to me and I’m not spending 4 or 5K on a tv isn’t perfect. The 50" Sony SXRD was tempting, but it just didn't fit well in my living room. I finally settled on this westinghouse after many many screen comparisons with sony, panisonic, samsung, lg, etc... I simply couldn't justify spending $500-1500 more for the very little improvements they offered. Plus I was in the market for a DVD player and since the stand has such small footprint, it fits nicely on the mantle over the fireplace without having to mount it on the wall.
I bought it about 2 weeks ago and when I first plugged it, the standard tv picture was not very good. It was so bad my first though was to take it back, but some tweaking helped the picture a bit (although there isn’t much tweaking available on this tv). After putting in a DVD the picture quality was as good as it was in the store and that kept me from returning it. The DVD player has a drawback with it anamorphic picture display. I’d never even heard of that ‘feature’ before this tv, but the end result is that some (but not all) of my DVDs are played with 4 black bars around the screen, so that the 40 inch tv is effectively only 32 inches. I’m not sure if this is a limitation with the tv or the DVD player, but hopefully I can find away around it. I plan to hook my computer up to the tv soon and maybe there will be a way to play DVDs through it such that they are formatted to fully fill the screen.
I just got HD cable tv this weekend and the HD picture is great on this TV! Watching a standard tv picture on this Westinghouse isn’t very good, but I’m gettin used to it and it’s bareable. However, the HDTV picture is great, especially for the price. I can’t believe it only took me one weekend to become such an HDTV snob. I watched Batman Begins in high def over the weekend didn’t notice any weakness in the black levels, but can’t say I was really looking for them either. At least they didn’t distract me from the movie. The color red does blur together a bit when the reds get very bright, but that’s the only thing I’ve noticed colorwise.
Overall the tv may not be great, but it’s certainly good enough. -
"Not worth paying the low price" on by grmilne
Pros: The tv was priced low
Cons: poor product support
Summary: I bought this tv at best buy. The screen must have cracked from minor pressure of installation. I spent hours on the phone and online only to be told it was tough luck. I understand that the screens can be fragile, but there was little pressure put on it. I was merely intalling the wall mount bracket. Customer service was inflexible. They wanted me to ship the tv to them at my cost and would charge me to look at it if they deemed if they did not want to cover the repair.
I had the impression that the company did not want to support its product.
I would give them a 0 for customer support. -
"Don't get thisTV" on
Pros: Low price, nice picture
Cons: Support, quality of parts
Summary: I got my Westinghouse LTV40W1-HDC 40 LCD TV/DVD Combo 4 month ago and have had problems with it from day one. Let me say that the TV has awesome picture and is perfect for me… when it works.
The sounds always changes to internal speakers when it is power cycled. Every time I want to use my home stereo for my sound I need to open the menu and select external speakers. If you turn it off then on again you need to set it up again. This sounds minor but having to do this every time is getting old.
It also will default with the subtitles on when a movie is played with the integrated DVD player. This too needs to be shut off via the menu every time. Also, getting old.
Westinghouse told me Integrated Automaton International is the company that would fix this and they made a ticket for me with them. After about 8 calls 6 e-mails and 4 months I have yet to talk to a soul at IAI to even schedule a time to resolve this issue. Westinghouse told me I could ship it back to them but I would have to pay for the packing of the TV and they have no idea how long it would take to fix the issue.
About 2 months ago any analog video input to the TV was unwatchable; it looked like a scrambled cable channel. I got the TV at Best Buy and Westinghouse told me to take it to them and they would fix it. They had the machine for over 3 weeks before I got it back. They had to replace the main board on it and despite my begging, they didn’t resolve the firmware issue.
I would not recommend this set to anybody despite its low cost and great picture quality. The set seems prone to breaking and the quality of support offered by Westinghouse and their third-party IAI is abysmal.
