After downloading the 4.8MB file, installation is smooth. Simply select your language preference, and you're ready to go. Spybot has an easy-to-use interface: From the main window, you can scan your system for spyware, update the program, and recover your system to a previous state, if needed, thanks to the backup copies that Search and Destroy makes of everything it changes. A highly configurable advanced-mode interface is available for power users who like to schedule their scans (using Windows Task Manager), manage cookies, add skins, and even customize Spybot's operation, such as deciding whether to launch at start, to log files, or to display warnings. Protection not found in other antispyware software includes displaying your windows Hosts file (often the target for phishing scams), a built-in data shredder, and a fairly long list of opt-out addresses so that you can stop getting spam. It's the extras within Spybot that initially won us over.
In our Download.com tests, Search and Destroy was lightning fast, requiring only 7 minutes, 19 seconds to scan our test system. Unfortunately, the scan was not very accurate. Formerly one of the best antispyware programs available, Spybot Search and Destroy performed the worst in our Download.com tests. First, Search and Destroy required that we restart in order to remove spyware programs that reinstall themselves. Second, after restart, the second scan took almost twice as long as the first. In the end, however, Spybot left 180 Search Assistant, Bookedspace, eXact Searchbar, and Search Exe running on our system.
Version 1.4 of Spybot Search and Destroy includes a tutorial and an in-program help file. Unfortunately, our test e-mail went unanswered. On the other hand, Sypbot is an easy-to-use app that is unlikely to give you any real headaches.

I can't live without it!
Pros: FREE, for one, and has advance tools that I even use for diagnosing my customers PC's. It's great for PC owners who haven't a clue as well as the advance who love to tweak. I could just go on .
Cons: I do find sometimes when downloading and installing updates that I end up with bad checksums. Getting personal communications from site is, well, almost...non exsistent.
I love it! I use it in my homebased business as a diagnostic tool and a repair program. As we all know most PC's problems nowadays is from either Malware or what I call a "Dirty PC"...lol Where operator maintence, and personal tweaking is non exsistent...a mess...like a teenagers bedroom. You should always layer your security. Use preventative measures as well as scanning and cleaning. I have security from my motherboard to my emails. My PC is squeaky clean and all by FREE programs and very little effort on my part. I highly recommend all internet active computers to have this program.

Spybot, with Ad-Aware and PC-Cillian, is all you need

Spybot provides ways to immunize your system and block known spyware domain names. Ad-aware does not, though Ad-aware detects more spyware.
Spybot provides a powerful and easy way to control start-up processes. It even includes information on the more well known start-ups.
And best of all, it is FREE and works better than some pay programs. Use it with Ad-Aware and PC-Cillian, and you won't have to worry about any malware at all.

Spybot Not As Good As Everyone Says

Cons: GUI still messed up on confirmation of registry change. No automatic updates. Doesn't really work.
Recently I had three different PC's (friends and family) go down hard because of Spyware caused directly from trojan horse viruses. SB could not get rid of all the registry entries. In fact even after a successful Symantec scan and quarantine of the virus, I ran Spybot it said it caught some 200+ cases of spyware, but the pc remained bad as porn site after porn site would pop up when browsing.
So downloaded PCTools Spyware Doctor and after one scan and removal the pc was like it was built again. PCTools is $29 for a year. That to me is totally worth it. The interface and reporting totally rocks too. Sorry but SpyBot is a waste of time completely.

Spybot Search & Destroy is the best spyware eradicator to date. It's refined with age.
Pros: Spybot S & D has immunized over 8200 potential intruders since I first downloaded it. I especially like the custom version...and it's all free!
Cons: There are some, i.e. like the viscious 'Winfixer', that are not even acknowledged by Spybot S & D when it is actively corrupting your computer (Spysweeper kills Winfixer instantly).

As part of the installation for 1.4, it installs, or tries to, some sort of search toolbar in my browser, and two files that the installer refuses to indentify WHAT they do, and WHY they are there.

Spybot Many feature, many uses
Pros: Tea Timer, Immunize
Cons: Randomly Names spyware not found
First, when you install spybot, select teh Tea Timer check box. This will install an active application that consistantly monitors the registry and processes. This is especially valuble if your trying to prevent spyware from modifying your registry or restarting processes.
A place this can be used is for instance, lets say your trying to install Morpheus, a popular peer to peer application. the free version Installs a lot of spyware and causes many popup adds. You can prevent this if you simply have the Tea Timer installed first. When you goto install any application that you know will install spyware, the Tea Timer prompts you with Registry changes, Click DENY CHANGE and check "Remember my Decision." So now, everytime you lauch the application it will not modify your registrys Services, Run, or browser helper objects.
Secondly, the Tea Timer will prevent any installed spyware that is not caught, from installing Other spyware.
After you Scan your system for spyware, Run the Immunize feature. This will prevent Spybot's resident application from notifying you of Bad pages blocked. its a great feature.
Spybot removes at least 80% more spyware than any other application, and i have used them all in my business on many desktops.
Like all spyware products, spybot is not perfect. No Spyware program can find the randomly named executable file. This takes good human intervention to repair.

My favorite aspect is the immunization ability. I don't let myself be complacent and think that that's all there is to do, but knowing that some spyware is blocked from ever entering my system is very comforting. Used in conjunction with Spywareblaster (which it recommends) is probably one of the best things I've been able to do to combat spyware on my computer and I've had very few instances of spyware getting past them.

One of the problems with Spybot is that the interface is somewhat confusing, and the buttons are poorly labeled, with no pop-up tips as to which buttons do what. There are a few small problems with installation, in that not all files were extracted.
Still, from my experience, it has found so many more trojans and data miners than any other spyware, and it is very fast, unlike Ad-Aware and MS AntSpyware. Once you have used it a few times and read all the instructions, you really can't believe that such a great utility is free, protection your $2000 investment.

Was Awesome, Now I don't need it.
Pros: Tells you what Spyware you have, and where it came from. Allows you to disable Runtime programs.
Cons: It doesn't remove everything with one simple click.
Now however, I never use it, because I downloaded Mozilla Firefox browser and I haven't had one spyware or uninvited cookie in at least 6 months. So I reccommend you download this product and FF, clean up your computer, and never use Internet Explorer again.

Outstanding product - really works
Pros: Not the easiest to use but it does the job and does it well. And hey, it's free, so how can you complain? Fixed my husband's machine - got rid of a ton of spyware he had accidentally gotten, and saved us from having to buy more memory!

Pros: Great Program if you watch what you delete. Deleted system restore and outlook express on xp home. If you watch what you delete it is a absolutley wonderful thing.It did find a ton of spyware though. Read the README file.
