Sized and equipped to go head-to-head with the most popular midsize imports, the 2006 Ford Fusion is the first Ford to be completely developed digitally--designed, engineered, and tested for manufacturing in computer simulations before being physically constructed. The Fusion fits between the smaller Focus and the larger Five Hundred, and in ancestry, it demonstrates Ford's global orientation and current way of doing business. Ford owns controlling interest in Mazda, Mazda has a good if undermarketed sedan in the Mazda6, and so the Mazda6 structure was widened, lengthened, and strengthened to become the Fusion's architecture.

Like the import brands that are its direct competitors, the Ford Fusion is offered with both four-cylinder and V-6 engines. The four-cylinder is the 2.3-liter, 160-horsepower unit also found in the Focus, matched to a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The 221-horsepower V-6 comes with only a six-speed automatic. The list of standard equipment for the three trim levels is long, including AM/FM/MP3-compatible CD sound systems. But don't look for a nav system, cell phone integration, satellite radio, or MP3 player compatibility in the factory option list.

Our test car was a top-of-the-line Fusion SEL V-6, with a very reasonable base price of $21,710. Even after adding leather seats for $895, antilock brakes for $595, heated front seats for $295, the $395 Safety and Security package (with front side-impact air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, and a perimeter alarm), the $595 SEL Premium Package (with heated outside rearview mirrors with puddle lamps, an electrochromic inside rearview mirror, and automatic headlights), and the $650 destination charge, the total was $25,135.

An all-wheel-drive model is planned for introduction late in the 2006 calendar year, with a hybrid in 2008.

Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. With the 2006 Ford Fusion, Ford reached into its global parts bin, mixing, matching, and modifying familiar ingredients, then wrapped the result in a new look. For the most part, it's successful, lacking only key electronic options that appeal to tech-savvy buyers. As a car, it's the first Ford to offer a serious alternative to the popular midsize sedans.

The Ford Fusion's styling earned many looks and some interesting comments during our time with it. While it was parked on the street in a Silicon Valley residential neighborhood one morning, we observed a jogger stop and spend several minutes carefully checking out the car. This is a reaction not normally associated with affordable midsize sedans.

Its clean exterior design and attention to details including tight panel gaps and external mirror shape. Its gasketless windshield and rear window glass help reduce noise inside the Fusion, as does extensive use of a variety of noise-damping materials around the interior.

The interior has a fresh, international look, with three motifs depending on trim level. Our Fusion SEL V-6 was a handsome two-tone tan and black, with--as on all Fusion models--high-quality soft-touch synthetic materials on the instrument panel and doors. Controls for cruise, climate, and audio were mounted on the steering wheel. In the place of too-common artificial wood trim was what Ford calls piano black plastic, which fits well with the other interior materials and textures.

The center stack includes a stereo set into a double-DIN slot, opening up the possibility for aftermarket improvements to the Ford Fusion's electronics.

Instruments are shaded from glare under a European-looking hood. The SEL model comes with a good-quality six-speaker AM/FM/in-dash, six-CD sound system that can play MP3 CDs, displaying title, artist, and album information. Loading and unloading discs is, as with most changers, best done at a stop or by the front-seat passenger. Unfortunately, there is no provision for using an external MP3 player or iPod without aftermarket accessories. Satellite radio, navigation, and Bluetooth cell phone integration are also left to the aftermarket. The analog clock in the center of the stack is a bit incongruous but is easy to read at a glance. A bin located in the top of the dash provides storage space for small items.

The Fusion SEL also has an automatic climate-control system that is simple to use and warms the car quickly in cool weather. There is a power point at the bottom of the center stack, where it joins the console, and another in the bottom of the two-layer console box. Anyone planning to charge a phone in that box is advised to keep it in the lower compartment, as there is no pass-through to the top.

Being that the Ford Fusion is a completely new model, we would expect the interior to include 21st-century digital appointments--at the very least, an auxiliary audio input. However, the audio system sits in a double-DIN slot, and the center stack would work fine for a more robust aftermarket system.

The 2006 Ford Fusion is powered by a 3.0-liter dual overhead cam, 24-valve Duratec V-6 with variable cam phasing on the intake camshafts, and electronic throttle control. It makes 221 horsepower at 6,250rpm, with 205 pound-feet of torque coming at 4,800rpm. Thanks to the variable cam phasing, there is good torque down low for quick acceleration when necessary, and both performance and fuel economy are assisted by a six-speed automatic transmission. This transmission allows a wide spread of gear ratios, with lower lows and higher highs, for both better acceleration and improved fuel economy. EPA mileage is listed at 21mpg (city) and 29mpg (highway). According to the car's trip computer, we averaged 19mpg around town and 27mpg on the highway, and it runs happily on unleaded regular gasoline. Acceleration, at around 7.5 seconds for 0 to 60mph, is brisk.

The six-speed automatic was smooth in operation, and its many ratios and the engine's broad torque band ensure that the correct gear for the situation is chosen more often than not, which is good, as there is no manual gear selection; the driver gets to choose between D and L only. Despite the lack of manual shift control, we found the Fusion to be an enjoyable car to drive. If not truly sporty, it's also not merely a transportation appliance. The engine and transmission both represent good employment of modern technologies.

While there is nothing revolutionary in the Ford Fusion's mechanical specification, it is very well executed, with good attention to detail. A solid chassis structure and a carefully designed and calibrated fully independent suspension give it highway comfort and good handling as well.

The front suspension is, unusually, a short-and-long-arm design, not the usual MacPherson struts. Rebound springs in the front shocks help reduce pitch during acceleration and deceleration, as well as lessen roll when cornering. The rear multilink setup is designed to limit the effect of lateral forces for more precise handling. The Fusion's springs, shocks, and stabilizer bars are tuned more firmly than expected in a mainstream sedan but matched for moderately firm yet comfortable ride quality. The power rack-and-pinion steering is not overly light, and the Fusion's handling response feels more European than American or Japanese. Large four-wheel disc brakes provide good stopping power. Bottom line: The Fusion is a much more enjoyable car to drive than the average midsize, middle-class sedan. The only drawback, inherited with the Mazda6 chassis, is a wide, 40-foot turning circle that can make for extra work in tight spaces.

The suspension also does a good job of controlling torque reaction, always a potential problem with a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Only under full-throttle acceleration with the front wheels turned is it overly noticeable.

The V-6 gets a ULEV II tailpipe emissions rating from the California Air Resources Board. The four-cylinder engine with the five-speed automatic qualifies as a PZEV vehicle.

Entrance to the 2006 Ford Fusion is controlled by Ford's first integrated fob key, which places the physical key and fob containing the lock, unlock, trunk, and emergency buttons together in one unit.

The Fusion's rigid structure is designed to protect occupants in an impact in any direction by controlled deformation, directing energy around and underneath the passenger compartment. Side impact is controlled not only by the B-pillar design and anti-intrusion beams in each door but also by blocks of energy-absorbing expanded polypropylene foam in the doors. Energy-absorbing polycarbonate-polyester materials are placed behind the front and rear bumpers.

Ford's Personal Safety System includes dual-deployment front air bags, energy-absorbing three-point safety belts for all occupants, and load-limiting retractors and pretensioners. A side air bag package is included with perimeter lighting in the Safety and Security option package. It includes seat-mounted front thorax and full-length head-protection air bags. The head air bags are designed to fill up between the window glass and an occupant's head, for protection from both impact and glass shards.

Strong four-wheel disc brakes are standard equipment, with ABS a $595 option. There is no stability control system, but V-6 models with ABS may be outfitted with traction control.

Like all 2006 Fords, the Fusion is covered by a three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty on materials and workmanship. The safety-restraint system is covered for five years or 50,000 miles. Perforation from corrosion is covered for five years, with unlimited mileage.

Great Car for the price!

Pros: This car is a solid car I have driven 136,000 miles on mine with 0 issues and i have only had to replace the battery and brake pads. Even with all these miles there are No squeks or rattles. I would buy this car again in a minute!

Cons: The only real con I can say about my car is that it had a little more road noise than I expected, with that being said it is still very quite.

Review: This car is a work horse and solid preformer I have a 6cyl and avg 25 MPG in combined driving around town. The inside is well built and solid feeling it no where near a cheap feeling as my wifes camry!

Fusion SE V6

Pros: Stylish outside design, good handling, big interior space.. 6 speed automatic, intergrated keyfob, etc

Cons: limited rearview, the quality of the interior finish is poor

Review: I'm a high school junior and this is my first car =P Love almost everything about this car, expect the interior finish is kinda rough.
got about 5.7k mile on this car and so far everything works perfectly well.I have leather seat, 6 CD, fog light, Side impact airbag and some other safety options added. I practiced my driving on my mom's lexus es, besides the poor interior finish.. i gotta say that the fusion is more fun to drive and looks way better.

2007 Fusion V6 SEL

Pros: Excellent value compared to Asian brands, with great style and all the kit you want

Cons: No electronic stabilization program available

Review: Contrary to many review that are published out there, the Fusion does come with plenty of kit this year - nav, aux input jack, heated mirrors, and all the trimmings are available. Ford also has an accessory Bluetooth integrator that can be installed for your cell phone. The interior is made of high-quality materials and seems to be well constructed. I found the cabin design to be delightfully different from your standard Asian midsize car. It is a solid car that drives well and definitely merits consideration.

Almost everything....

Pros: Too many to list

Cons: Missing In-Dash Navigation/DVD system

Review: Overall, I was quite pleased with the Ford Fusion SEL V6. Has both power and comfort. I just wished for the In-Dash Navigation/DVD system option.

Also, has a AUX button, but no port for it to plug in. Weird.

Excellent Car for the Money. And its a FORD!

Pros: Styling, Cargo Space, Did I mention Cargo Space!

Cons: Black = Hard Color To Keep Clean!

Review: There is not a thing I hate about this car. The styling is phenominal everywhere I go people as me what is that. And I have to say it is a ford. They are astonished. And the Fuel Economy blows the competition out of the water for this size sedan. I got the Inline 4 cylinder because of gas prices. Plus who needs 6 cylinders? More faster acceleration? Yes more faster acceleration to hit 100 mph and then hit a tree. Going fast is not the name of the game. It is fuel economy people. With that said. Black, a sexy, seductive color. If you wash your car twice a week, get black. But if you never, I mean never wash your car. Do not get black. Black is sexy and people love my car. But if I don't wash it for a week, you can see the dirt. Plus I love washing my car, teach your kids responsibility laugh out loud. Get this car, I guarentee you will love it better then an import, (Honda, Hyundai, and yes even Mitsubitchi!)

This is a ford?

Pros: Great handling, Lots of fun

Cons: No gadgets!

Review: I've had this car for a little over 2 months, and I do love it. I've driven just about every other ford and the best comparison I can make would be a low end v6 mustang. This car can MOVE when it wants to. Granted it has a 3.0L v6 but the suspension is what makes the drive truly great. I recommend the fully loaded v6 package as the 4cyl is a bit... too lagging.

I just wish it had more options and toys to play with, but then again that is what aftermarket is for. Gas milage isn't TERRIBLE but not nearly what the sticker claimed.

If your looking for a fun/sporty/comfortable midsize Sedan... test drive this sucker and you will not be dissapointed!

Value For The Money

Pros: Excellent Overall Value / Feeling of Security / Styling

Cons: Hard To Backup / 4-Cylinder Performance / Made In Mexico

Review: Wow, what a great car FOR THE MONEY. Sure, the Camry / Accord / Altima were all nicer appointed.... but at roughly $4,000 more (especially with all the dealer add-ons the Japenese Car dealers FORCE you to buy whether you want'em or not !) To me, the Fusion was simply the most car for the money.

I found it disheartening to see the Toyota / Honda / Nissan were all "MADE IN USA" and here's a decendent of Henry Ford "MADE IN MEXICO" !! (Henry would probably turn over in his grave!)

I got the 4-cylinder / 5-speed automatic in mine. It's OK, but, will never impress you with it's performance. I find the car VERY hard to back into a parking space as I'm often required to do. The high "angled" hat-shelf and wide C pillars in back really cut into visibility and you can never be certain where the back end is with total confidence.

Other than value for the money, what impressed me most with this car was how much attention Ford paid to occupant safety. It really seems to be designed from scratch with crash protection in mind.

I would certainly recommend one to a friend.

Excellent value

Pros: Value, appearance

Cons: Passenger seat sits too high and is not adjustable

Review: Excellent car for the money! I purchased a loaded V6 SEL and enjoy it very much. Great commuter car.

Fit and finish are great, road noise is minimal, performance and handling are more than acceptable, and I like the bold design lines.

Cartoys sells the adapter for IPOD attachment, for $199.......

Bought a Ford to support this American company and its employees, in the face of hostile boycotts initiated by ignorant "christian" groups.

I haven't owned an American car in years, so hope this meets my needs long term.

As bad as its predessesor

Pros: The only appealing new front grill

Cons: Lack of Innovative design and rest

Review: The main reason Japanese and German cars rule the country's market is that the american car desing are behind by atleast 2 years. Come on ford, have'nt you checked the new Camry's spy pictures atleast before launching the funny 'All-New fusion?!

No optional bluetooth! No optional navigation?! No Ipod support from an American car??!! Doesn't it sound Crazy!?

The ony convincing part is the front grill which looks a bit apealing. ford can try designing similar front grills to the rest of the models, replacing the drowzy, less-apealing, out-dated honey comb grill.

LOVE MY 2006 FUSION SEL

Pros: ATTENTION TO DETAILS

Cons: Only one minor question why the turn signal lever is aligned on an angle

Review: The 2006 Ford FUSION mid-size 4 door sedan earns my complete satisfaction in all aspects. After driving many different makes and models over the years, the 2006 Ford FUSION truly accomplishes what the others tried and failed. This model offers a luxurious feel at a really affordable price. Real value is what Fusion offers.
From its eye catching sporty exterior lines with beautiful appointments, great road handling and tuned dual exhaust, the handsome styling penetrates the outer skin to offer an interior of elegance and comfort found only in much more expensive cars.
The same 262 H.P. engine from Ford’s Cosworth division is also available in Jaguar’s. This particular 3.0 L V6 is an awesome auto-advance-valve-train 24 valve engine making it a technologically superior power package from Indy brickyard heritage. Then coupled up with a computer controlled six speed transmission and chassis with responsive steering and suspension is quick and precise, making it a dream to drive. Fuel economy, we average a good for the mid-size car class 21-MPG city, 28-MPG highway on regular unleaded gasoline.
This 2006 Fusion SEL leaves me hoping I can simply purchase an identical new one when the 2006 finally wear out. Perhaps one future improvement to hope for is an alternative power system which is much more overall affordable, something hybrid technology is not accomplishing at this time. It seems Ford is in a state of mid-year perfection with upgrades which may be occurring even as I write this review.

Great ride, handling, performance

Pros: Price, equipment list, performance

Cons: Minor ergonomic irritants

Review: Terrific car. Love the ride, handling, and performance with the 50-series tires. Good design - great looks - comfortable cabin. Handles so much better than the Taurus it replaces; almost as good as a Contour in cornering and traction.

Fit and finish are excellent. Someone really thought out the placement and operation of audio, HVAC, and operating controls.

Kudos to Ford for the 4 wheel disc brakes which REALLY work, and for fog lamps that REALLY work!

Only one minor (and I mean minor) irritant - the placement of the turn signal stalk is too far away from the steering wheel to use comfortably when one's hands are on the wheel. The old Contour placement was superior.

Pros: Not Available

Cons: Not Available

Review: I can say that I truly believe that the American car makers are not dead. I can honestly say this car beats my Honda Accord by 10x. The engine is quiet, I have a much better road handling feel than my Accord. Plus I paid $5k less. GO to the dealer and try this one out. I have been getting 33 mpg. I think you will love it.

Defective Michelin HXMXM4 tire installed on Ford Fusion 2006

Pros: Not Available

Cons: Not Available

Review: February 13 2006

Hello. I bought a Ford Fusion on December 21 2005. After just one month and just 2200 kilometers on the odometer, a tire just lost all the tread area. I am including some pictures so you can see this. The tire is a Michelin HXMXM4 225-50-17.

I have called both Ford and Michelin customer service here in Mexico, and have tried to contact the counterparts in the US for both companies with no success, as FORD is from the US and this Michelin tires as USA made. I see this tire problem just the way the firestone tires failed some time ago with ford trucks. I am asking Michelin Mexico or Ford Mexico for the warranty and replacement of the missing tire, and a complete evaluation of the other 3 remaining tires, but I get no answer from any company.

Now, my car has been carried to a ford dealer and I am waiting for their news, but I don´t know if they will honor the warranty as the Michelin´s Mexico area representavite (Pilar Maldonado, phone number +52- 442-2961600), has not even told me when my request will be answered. I also had a problem with the 6 cd changer, but this was fixed in a couple of days. This car just sounds as a lemon car, doesn´t it?

This is basically the same problem saw in the past in firestone tires on ford vehicles, I have plenty of pictures of this I can send you plenty of them so you can decide if this a defective tire or I just got bad luck and did not even knew how to inflate my tires at 33 psi so is my fault that all the tread of the tire just came of the tire.

Since this is a US card with tires made in the US, I would like to know to whom do I have to talk in order to file a complaint in the USA, since the Mexican counterparts in Mexico doesn´t even try to help and haven´t even been able to give me a report number (ford mexico) because they don´t want to have any responsibility about this type of problems.

Remember that the Ford Fusion is made in Mexico, so, anywhere in the world you might purchase this car, you would be getting the same car, so, please check that you don´t get this Michelin hxmxm4 defective tires and ask the dealer to install goodyear or any other quality tires you might like, even other type of michelin tires, just avoid the defective ones.

Thank you.

very nice car for the price

Pros: stylsh, peppy, fun to drive

Cons: somewhat engine noisy

Review: Corners very nicely, good pick up even with a four cylinder and automatic tranny, easy to get in and out of, good trunk space for the size car, Ford did a nice job of marrying the Mazda6 and this car, for under 20k you can get pretty nice car

A V-6 Ford or an I-4 Honda for the same price? Hmmm.....

Pros: A good design for a Ford (the best design for a Ford under $20k)

Cons: The looks aren't all that great.

Review: When I test drove this car, i was especially disappointed with the interior design. I would compare it to my 1993 Plymouth Voyager Van and argue that the van looks better (Seriously, no joke.) I think that Ford needs to improve in many ways. The reliability SUCKS, the design is horrible (interior AND exterior), the gas milage isn't all that great, and the room in the back seats is uncompareable to newer (yes, even JAPANESE) cars.

When you go to a Ford dealership, and you look around, this Ford (The Fusion), is perhaps the best looking car you'd see because all the other Fords look crappy and old-fasioned. If you have your mind set that you MUST buy a Ford, go with this one. Otherwise, stay out of troubles and buy youself a Honda or something (AH, the new Civic looks phenomenal). (I'd say GMC is getting tremendously better in reliability as well, and Chryslers are getting there).

My Point: DON'T GET THIS CAR!!!!!!!
Think atleast a zillion times before considering this car. If you want to spend eight some years with a car, buy something you might get along with!

The Fusion is a lot of car for the Money.

Pros: Great Fit and Finish, Good Horsepower and Fuel economy. Very Stylish exterior and Extremely comfortable interior. 6 speed automatic transmission keeps the torque right on the mark.

Cons: Would like the engine compartment to be a little more "SHOWIE". Dress it up a little, it looks like a car from the 80's under the hood.

Review: I am very pleased with my 2006 Fusion SEL. The ride is tremendous, interior is comfortable, Horsepower is respectable @221 hp and 205 ft lbs of torque, it's no slug. I average 24.3 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the highway. The 6 speed automatic transmission shifts exactly when it needs to. My opinion, The Fusion is A Lot of Car for a little price. I'm Happy to have it in my driveway. Love the Styling, wish it had a V8 available.
