When we reviewed the 2006 Infiniti M35x in August, we found it a very capable sport sedan. With an all-wheel-drive system derived from Nissan's still-unavailable-in-the-U.S. Skyline GT-R, the M35x impressed with its all-weather performance, but we wished it had a few more bells and whistles.

We got our wish recently when a 2006 Infiniti M35 in Diamond Graphite (a color that looked like silver to us) arrived, this time in a rear-wheel-drive guise but including the Technology Package that the M35x had lacked. As one might expect, it upped the tech ante considerably with such features as lane-departure warning, intelligent cruise control, GPS navigation, and satellite radio for the top-flight Bose sound system.

When thus optioned--and with other tech offerings, such as a voice-recognition system that actually works, adaptive and self-leveling front headlights, and keyless operation--the 2006 Infiniti M35 is well rounded in the gizmo department. This trend extends to the chassis as well, where a series of electronic aids keep the car on the road and following its intended path.

Our car's MSRP was just north of $40,000, with the options packages and à la carte splash guards ($120) and trunk mat ($80) bringing the final tally to $48,400. The 2006 Infiniti M35 has stiff competition in the midsize luxury-cum-sport-sedan market but acquits itself well and represents better value than some of its flashier rivals.

The driver's first clue to the breadth of technoconveniences in the 2006 Infiniti M35 comes even before entering the vehicle. With the intelligent key in pocket, you can press an unobtrusive button on the exterior handle, unlocking the door. Press it twice to unlock all the doors, as with the regular fob. There's one on the passenger-side front-door handle too, so opening from either side is possible.

Once you're seated, the impression is of understated elegance and ease of use. The four main gauges are proper analog types, with small digital displays in the speedo and tach faces. Our car's dark-leather and rosewood palette was very pleasing to the eye and added to the overall aura of sophistication. The key fob can remain pocketed or be inserted into a special slot to the left of the wheel. With one foot on the brake, a push of the starter button fires the engine as the seats, wheel, and mirrors return to the positions associated with the fob in use.

The 2006 Infiniti M35's seating, especially in front, maintains the technoluxury feel with full power adjustment, including lumbar, for the driver. The front seats are also heated and cooled through their perforated leather, and as part of the Bose Studio Surround 5.1 audio upgrade, they have small shoulder speakers. The 14-speaker system works well, with plenty of power and rich sound from both studio and burned discs. It plays discs in most CD and DVD formats, including WMA, still something of a rarity in factory systems. A technology Bose calls Centerpoint lets the system simulate fuller surround sound from regular stereo CDs. Six dedicated buttons change the discs, and two knobs control volume and tuning in time-tested fashion.

Infiniti continues to make the most effective standard rearview monitors we've come across. Using the crisp 7-inch LCD, the view out back is overlaid with fixed, color-coded grid lines to help with judging distances. A feature that wasn't present on the rearview monitor of the M35x, we found this feature quite helpful.

The 2006 Infiniti M35's navigation system is indeed a welcome addition, and while part of a pricey package ($4,200), the equipment group also includes enough other technology to warrant the expense: the upgraded Bose six-CD audio system already described, intelligent cruise control, lane-departure warning, XM Satellite Radio, and input jacks for audio/video. Our car didn't have the optional rear-seat entertainment system, but we found the navigation system easy to control, as with the other Infiniti products we've tried.


The standard Infiniti interface works very well for controlling the car's functions.

The large, block-printed buttons and the knobby rim of the main click wheel aren't completely in keeping with the style of the rest of the 2006 Infiniti M35's cabin, but function correctly trumps form here, and the controls are easy to use. Most menus allow for either twisting the wheel or using one of four directional buttons for scrolling, and the overall experience is better for having lots of big, dedicated buttons, including all the climate controls. On the purely analog side, Infiniti's familiar chrome-ringed oval clock is a nice touch and is actually visible in the M35, as opposed to its placement at knee level in the QX56.

The navigation-system functionality of the 2006 Infiniti M35 sometimes let down its well-designed controls, however. A relatively well-known, if pretty remote, town off Highway 1 south of San Francisco wasn't mapped beyond the main two-lane highway, and other populated areas' surface roads didn't appear at all. More frustratingly, a popular hotel in a larger town was among a list of known nearby destinations, but the system apparently forgot where it was and instead directed us vaguely to the center of town, about 2 miles from the hotel. Because navigation systems rely on one of two companies for their mapping data, these map glitches are most likely common to other navigation systems as well. The system did score points with its bird's-eye view option and a split-screen mode that keeps a small map visible alongside a larger selection screen for making route changes while under way.

Also somewhat disappointing was the degree of Bluetooth integration. Our usual test phone, a Motorola V551, synced with the 2006 Infiniti M35 readily enough, but no address book information was read. This was perhaps forgivable, as the M35 offers a very useful voice-recognition setup that controls not only a Bluetooth phone but also the climate, audio, and navigation systems.

The 2006 Infiniti M35 offers various underhood technologies to augment its impressive interior electronics. The 3.5-liter V-6 generates 280 horsepower at 6,200rpm and 270 pound-feet of torque at 4,800rpm through the use of continuously variable valve timing. The power always seems adequate, although the prospect of the V-8 version's extra 55 horsepower is tantalizing.

The 2006 Infiniti M35's transmission helps greatly in the impression of sportiness, shifting quickly and smoothly as an automatic and offering better control in its gear-selection mode than most other versions we've tried. Along a series of twisting bends on the ridge overlooking Silicon Valley, flipping back and forth between second and third gears allowed for minimal use of the brakes, as well as satisfying throttle modulation while following a vintage Porsche for a few miles.


The gear-selection mode for the automatic transmission in the M35 is one of the best we've tried.

The handling is generally very good, with the refined if slightly remote feel we've come to expect from Infiniti and its Japanese compatriots. Some low-speed understeer can be uncovered, but chassis electronics ensure that the 2006 Infiniti M35 never gets too out of shape. Vehicle dynamic control and the traction-control system work to correct wheelspin during acceleration and deviation from the intended path while cornering. As with most such features, they will go unnoticed in everyday driving on dry roads.

All told, the 2006 Infiniti M35 never feels slow or unsettled, but it remains, somewhat intangibly, a less-inspiring drive than cars such as the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6. This feeling comes down to the steering mostly, as the speed-sensitive system in the M35 lacks the precision and the feedback found in those cars.

EPA fuel ratings are par for the course in this segment, at 18mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway.

Rounding out the tech trifecta, the 2006 Infiniti M35 has some safety features found in few other current production cars. First and foremost is its lane-departure warning system, which uses a small camera mounted above the rearview mirror to monitor lane markings and sound a chime if the car drifts too close to one. It's a nice bit of technology, working as intended both night and day (and only at speeds above 45mph), but we wonder if its effectiveness as a true warning may have been neutered by liability questions, as the chime is barely audible at highway speeds with music playing. It can be turned off easily but not made louder, and as such, it's more a novelty than the antidrowsiness safety measure it could be.

Intelligent cruise control on the 2006 Infiniti M35 is a more useful option. A series of lasers is used to determine the distance to the next car, and the system then maintains a user-specified cushion to it. This same technology is used in conjunction with the standard brake-force distribution and brake-assist features to recognize stopped or rapidly slowing vehicles ahead and to prepressurize the brakes in anticipation of an emergency application.

A simpler yet no less-useful safety feature is the 2006 Infiniti M35's adaptive headlight system, which turns the Xenon front lamps to look into corners, based on steering input and vehicle speed. The headlights are also self-leveling, so they stay pointed accurately regardless of vehicle load.

The aforementioned voice-operated controls allow the driver to stay focused on the road, as do a host of steering wheel-mounted controls. Included are buttons for activating voice control, controlling the audio volume and source, using Bluetooth, and so on. One complaint we had was with the top steering-wheel switch on each side serving as levers rather than buttons. With a CD playing, nudging one of these while moving one's hands across the wheel is too easy and skips (or repeats) the CD track. Simple buttons, as used for the rest of the steering-wheel controls, would be more effective.

Infiniti's standard warranty protection is good for four years/60,000 miles, with power train coverage extending to six years/70,000 miles. Corrosion protection runs to seven years with unlimited mileage, 24-hour roadside assistance is offered with all new Infinitis, and dealers offer loaner cars when available.

Top notch luxury and reliability...and it's affordable!

Pros: Excellent power train, large interior for midsize sedan, many tech toys, affordable

Cons: Blue tooth works decent at best, display can only show 10 characters so songs with long names get cut off, no aux input for MP3 Players/iPods (later models do), no hard drive for data storage, fuel economy, high dealer main costs.

Review: This car is highly affordable used. If you do your research, you will discover that the M35 is tops in luxury and reliability. It is quite sporty but not as much as the BMW 3 or 5 series. Still, it's just one of the best cars out there even compared to the luxury imports. Check those automotive sites or consumer sites for (somewhat) unbiased opinions. I won't share judgement, just my experience with the car thus far.
I purchased the 2006 model in summer of 08 with just about all options for around $21k. Car had 2.5 yrs, 22,000 mi b2b warranty still remaining. The M35's does have a steep depreciation rate compared European luxury and the Lexus lines making this car a phenominal used value.
Local Infiniti dealership is fast, courteous and skilled but maintenance job costs are high.
Warranty jobs thus far:
Replace O2 sensor
Unclog winshield fluid sprayer nozzles
Repair excessive vibration coming from rear subwoofer
Tire pressue monitor sensor, rear passenger, replaced.
All jobs done in a day. A free loaner program available even just for an oil change. A good way to check out new Infiniti models.

Voice recognition works 9/10 times. All failures occur when trying to voice program new destination in GPS which is the only way to program new destination when moving. No failures for radio station, climate control voice commands.
Blue tooth works well for the driver but the person on the other side may have some difficulty hearing. I have been told that I sound "distant" or on crappy speaker phone.
DVD played through nav screen will only display when parked with parking brake engaged. I have been told that there are ways to bypass this safety setting but I have no interest in doing that.
Backup camera works very well even in dark conditions.
Lane departure sensors can miss road lines and false detection can occur. The sensor beeping isn't very loud so you may miss a detection if you have the radio up.
Dynamic cruise control works very well. It can however, be overly sensitive. The car will brake sharply if another car cuts you off and gets in the detection zone.
Ample trunk space.
Seat cooling take some time to take effect on a hot day.
In cabin filter replacement is a rip off. Do it yourself by buying a filter online for $20. Or buy one and provide it to the dealer. They'll charge $60 for the filter itself plus another $40 for install. It does take disassembly of the glove box to get to.
OEM tires were Bridgestone Potenza RE040. Adequate all around.
Next set: Dunlop Dizerra 101. Crap. Eexcessive road noise after 5k miles. Subpar wet traction.
Next set: Falken Ziex ZE-912. Cheap but great set of tires.

My first used car. Will never buy new again. Was considering 08 Chevy Malibu for around the same price when I stumbled upon this deal.

Review: You don't buy a luxury car to argue with the manufacturer over correcting defects. But here are my experiences:My M35 Bluetooth would not synch with an AT&T 8525. At first Nissan refused to fix it even though it froze my entire console. They said it wasn't on their list of phones. But Bluetooth is a trademark a company can ONLY use if its devices are interoperable with other tested devices. Failure to do this is a violation of the trademark agreement. Finally Nissan relented and after FOUR tries finally fixed the problem. More recently the A/C Condenser was struck by a stone. The car was under warranty but they refused to cover this. Damage by stone chips is one of their exclusions. Understandable for paint damage but if you design a grill only for air flow and not to protect the radiator and condenser that is a design defect. Could it have been deliberate? A way to make sure they make money on replacement condensers and radiators? And their voice recognition, for simple telephone numbers may be the worst in the world. So, on the face of it, the M35 may look like a nice car and be fun to drive but God forbid you have to deal with Nissan for warranty repairs. Of the Japanese car manufacturers they are, no doubt, the worst to deal with. Buy at your own risk!

One AMAZING CAR!

Pros: Navigation, Ride, Comfort, Easy-to-use interface, great BOSE sound system (14 speaker) lane departure, intelligent cruise control, the list goes on and on!

Review: This car is one amazing machine. I have to say that out of every car in it's class this is the best one to get. A lot of people complain about Infiniti's gas mileage. I'm sorry, but If you can afford a $60k car, the last thing on your mind should be the gas mileage (Go get a Toyota if you mileage is what your after.) The bottom line... The only car I will ever own will be an Infiniti!

Great Performance; features need improvement

Review: Car is great to drive. But at this price, there are a few things, Infiniti should have done better on. The GPS system is the worst I've used. Takes forever to input address. You end up using the Voice Recognition, but it does not work for hotels, restaurants, you must have the street address. I must have reset the seats and mirrors 10 times in the last 2 years. It just seems to forget the saved locations. Would not be a problem, but the defaults, particulary for backing up are terrible. Finally, if you like heated seats, these are close to worthless. My 1989 Saab's were warmer. The cooling seats are OK.

Unbelievable Sound and Performance

Review: Great vehicle with an awesome surround sound system. The speakers in the back of the front seats provide audio better than any vehicle I have ever been in. The navigation system is much "clener" than both the Acura RL and the Lexus GS. The air conditioned front seats are just what is required in the southeast heat. My only con is around mpg, but both the Acura and the Lexus have the same numbers, so if you are looking in this class of car - I would say the M35 is the best choice!

13K miles & 10 months later, still a 10

Pros: Tech gizmos work well, add to driving experience; drivability is superior, design is atheletic

Cons: Nav with traffic would be nice, better Ipod integration, both minor issues

Review: I have been driving my M35X with the premimum option pkg for 10 months now and I stll love starting it up every day. Built rock solid, no problems, well integrated technology that anyone can use, outstanding sound system and its' handling and acceleration and drivability excel. AWD was wondeful in the snow this winter, far better than the FWD car I traded in for the M. I extensively drive tested all competitiors last May and still wouldn't trade it in for the RL, 500 series, GS or A6. The best AWD sport sedan for the money. I can't imagine confusing it for a Civic and never heard that compairison. Some one needs glasses if they believe so. Not even close. (I do like the new Civics design though!) Now the Acura RL and an Accord, that's close!

Review: For $48,400 one would think a car would be so handsomely distinctive but NO, it looks like the new Civic 4 door from the rear, from the side and from the front. Honda is feeling right but would Infinit owners??
(no "Y" in the Infiniti name by the way)
All those electronic gizmos mean more future headaches and repair costs.

The Best AWD Luxury Sedan Out There

Review: I have been shopping for an AWD luxury sedan and can't afford the Bentley. Of the Audi A6, BMX 530xi, Acura RL and Infiniti M35X, the M35X has the superior combination of drivability, features and quality. I already own a 2005 FX35 with the Premium, Sport and Technology Packages. I absolutely love the FX, especially because of its driveability in terms of its handling and performance. However, because I prefer cars over trucks, I almost wish I had waited for the M35X instead of pulling the trigger on the FX35, but only almost. As it turns out, I need a second AWD car and the M35X will fit the bill perfectly. The only downsides to the car are the not-yet-ready-for-prime-time adaptive cruise control that comes with the Technology Package and less than stellar gas mileage, although if mileage were a primary consideration I'd be writing about a hybdrid vehicle instead. The only thing missing is an input for a portable music player like an iPod. I did not give the M35X a 10, but it's as close to a 10 as is available right now. Compared to my FX35, the M35X has a much better but still performance-oriented ride, partly due to its appreciably lower center of gravity. Surprisingly, in addition to the advances in interior refinement and technology over the FX35 (e.g., rosewood paneling and leather door inserts, beautiful instrumentation, a much improved nav system, voice recognition, and Bluetooth), it also has a much tighter turning circle (i.e., 36.1 ft vs. 38.7 ft). But the best carryover features from the FX35 to the M35X are the 280hp VQ engine, which is at least the equal of BMW's terrific V6 engines, the rear-biased AWD system and the incredibly smooth manumatic transmission that downshifts better than any other. Finally, while I hate the look of the honkin' big knob, I must admit that it is an improvement over the little push-button joystick in my FX35, and much better than the systems in the 530xi and A6. And the new voice-recognition system renders it moot under most circumstances anyway.

Like all the Nissan line- quality very good, but..

Pros: Lots of get up and go, great stlyling.

Cons: Can;t get my golf clubs in the trunk because of small hatch. Ground clearance too low, will not clear standard concrete parking lot bumpers. Seem dangerous when traveling @ high speeds.

Review: I have the coupe, probably will not buy again because of my personal cons. But overall quality is excellent, like all my previous Infinitys.
