"This is a review of an Evo IX MR, and you don't know what you're talking about."

by atlvalet on November 8, 2005

Pros: The Evo is the best performance bang for the buck at this price point

    Cons: It's not a woman.

Summary: Ok, did the person who wrote this review even drive the car? The car you reviewed is the Evo IX MR, not a regular Evolution. Unless this article was written by the Jason Blair of car reviews, since a lot of the information here is fictional anyways. The Sti is a great car, but to say it outperforms the Evo is like saying the 84 Mets are a better team than the 2004 Red Sox. Are you listening Wayne, or is it Jason?

Where did you get your horsepower information? The IX went from 276 last year on the 8 to 286 this year on the IX, not from 260 to 280. And 5.7 seconds to 100kph (because that's what 62 miles an hour is, but who uses that in the good 'ole USA. We use 60 mph here, FYI)? Whose grandmother was driving the car? EIther you got the slowest Evo in the world or your fact gathering is very, very sloppy. And the IX has a revised turbo, but again, I guess that kind of information is reserved for reviewers who do some kind of research into what they're writing about.

And the point of MIVEC isn't for fuel economy, it's to increase performance. While there may be some fuel efficiency improvement, the big bonus comes from spooling the turbo quicker by adjusting the intake cam.

As for electronics, how about ACD and EBD (Active Center Differential and Electronic Brake Distribution)? Last time I checked, Mario Andretti didn't need Bluetooth in his race car and that's what the Evolution is--a race-bred rally car for the street.

The people who get this car 'get it.' Wayne apparently doesn't, and I'm sorry Wayne. Maybe you'll be happier in your Camry.

Thank you atlvalet for your informative and objective review. I totally agree with everything you said.
To expand, I test drove an Evo XIII late last year, giving in to all the hype and in the market for a new car. I fell in love with this car.

I was fortunate to have the guidance of a seasoned and well versed driver... having solid experience with the STi, Honda's gorgeous S2000, Mazda's RX8, VW's sexy little Golf GTi, the Lotus Elise, and of course the Evo. I fully believe comparing the STi and Evo is not as straightforward as many would believe to think.

I just bought an EVO IX MR. I sat in it, drove it, and it offered me everything I have been dreaming for in a driving experience.

All the issues that unimpressed reviewers seemed to impose on this car, are the very things I love about it. I don't care about toys and gadgets inside, the knobs all do what they are supposed to and feel solid. Everything is intuitively placed. If I want a 340 watt sound system, I will sit in the comfort of my own home and turn on the BeoCenter.

I can't help thinking that so may of todays cars are full of little things to distract you from the reason you are inside the vehicle in the first place, to drive. I don't need internet access, or multi-disc cd changers.

From the moment I think about approaching my car and getting ready to drive, a huge grin slaps itself across myface. Outside, it looks so self-assured and somewhat cocky. Inside, there is nothing to distract me from enjoying my commute. The leather and alcantara recaro's are perfect. The leather wrapped momo steering wheel is perfect to touch and hold. The feel of the hand brake and shifting gears is always a pleasure.

I love that I have the option of keeping the immense power under control - under 2800 rpms it is so well behaved. I'm not a street racer, I don't want to be. Admittedly I won't fully open up the engine until a few hundred miles, but I don't need constant reminders at every stop light to know the extreme face altering power of the boost.

Personally, the ride is more responsive than bumpy, its like walking with socks - as opposed to walking barefoot. Other cars I have driven are like walking with Nike's on. I like the feeling that I am attached to the road at all times, in all conditions - it offers me a feeling of security and that leads to comfort.

It's very subjective. If you want low range aggressiveness, with a few interior mod-cons, then the STi is perfect. I use the Evo to drive to work everyday (about 5 - 10 miles each way), I love the somewhat low riding position - have no problem seeing the tacho/odo. If you care about having pure fun whilst driving a car - it has to be the Evo. Reviews are misleading, presenting it as a really cheap performance car - but the interior on the IX is lovely. May not be luxurious, but it's very comfortable and inoffensive.

My confidence still has room to grow at this point, but I can't wait to hit the track and see how much more fun this car can be.

Test drive, test drive, test drive. That is the only way you will ever know if this one is for you.
