"Fast, Iconoclastic, Great Value"4.5 starson by misterkevin
Pros: My third 9-5, this one finally has the horsepower to compete with the other cars in its class.
Cons: Even without the sport version, the ride with this car is on the hard side.
Summary: The torque at passing speeds above 30 mph is phenomenal. The front styling is sharp and sexy and gets plenty of looks. The fit and finish of the body is great: the car is capable of amazing speeds of over 120 mph without the slightest shake or agitation. The interior is simple, clean, and modern-- designed around the driver.
On the other hand, the new lower front spoiler is rather low to the ground and easy to scratch or hit when starting up even a moderate grade. The speedometer also lights up completely when using the night vision option (a Saab-only button which turns off or dims nearly all unnecessary dashboard lights), which was not the case for previous models from 1998 and 2002.
There is much to love about the new Saab 9-5. In particular it offers individuality against a slew of mid-size Acura and BMW entry level luxury sedans on the road. This car simply is different than others, from the center mounted ignition and window controls to the surprising interior space including a capacious trunk with a pass-through and fully folding down rear seats.
My little secret about this car is that it offers nearly all of the features and cachet of those cars at a fraction of their cost, about $34K. Plus, because it's a four cylinder turbo, the gas mileage is great. I get 29 mpg on average with mostly highway driving.
