Product summary

The goodThe good: The 2006 Volkswagen Passat offers a solid GPS navigation system and an excellent Dynaudio sound system. The available V-6 engine with direct fuel injection offers impressive power and, mated to the six-speed automatic, gives the car a sound LEV-II emissions rating.

The badThe bad: Cell phone integration isn't even an option on the 2006 Volkswagen Passat, and it won't play MP3 CDs in its changer or offer a place to plug in an MP3 player. When optioned out, the V-6 model gets pretty pricey for a Volkswagen.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: The 2006 Volkswagen Passat hits pretty well in a number of tech departments, with an innovative power train, safety equipment that includes active headlights, and a very nice sound system. But the car just won't play with the gadgets in your life.

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat is a substantial update on the previous year's model. It is slightly larger and shares a platform with the Jetta, as opposed to the Audi A4 and its 2005 model. The new platform allows for transverse engine mounting, which the Passat takes advantage of. Our test car came with Volkswagen's newest ultracompact narrow-angle VR6 engine, with a 3.6-liter displacement and 280 horsepower. The base-model four-cylinder is the 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower turbo.

In turbo, four-cylinder Value Edition trim, the 2006 Volkswagen Passat is aimed at the middle of the midsize sedan market, offering distinction and an engaging driving experience along with a more sophisticated design as its competitive edge. The V-6-equipped version, with its 280 horsepower and upscale option packages, takes a stab at the midluxury segment. Although an impressive sound system and GPS navigation can be had as options, the Passat doesn't include any cell phone integration or accommodation for MP3 players.

Our test car had the V-6 and a six-speed Tiptronic automatic, the only transmission choice, and is available for a base price of $29,950. But add the $5,550 Package #2 Sport with leather power sports seats; a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with shift paddles and multifunction controls; rain-sensing wipers; heated front seats; dual-zone automatic climate control; bi-Xenon headlights with the Adaptive Front Lighting System; the Dynaudio audio system; park distance control; another $1,800 for the DVD satellite navigation system and glove-box-mounted six-CD changer; and the $615 destination charge, and that's $37,915 worth of Passat. That's a lot for a Volkswagen--but a lot of Volkswagen and still considerably less than the equivalent German luxury-brand luxury car.

Although some road noise enters the cabin, the new 2006 Volkswagen Passat's sleek aerodynamic lines contribute to its interior quiet by reducing wind noise. The car has grown in all dimensions since the 2005 model but more in length and width than height, so it has longer, leaner proportions suggestive of Volkswagen's ultrapremium Phaeton. The front end features a new chrome accent undercutting the grille, which looks somewhat like a goatee.

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat comes with a collapsible umbrella stored in the driver's door. Perhaps it's gimmicky, but it's undeniably useful. The new Passat dashboard uses a floating design, a clever illusion produced by a distinct separation and color change between the top and the bottom. Instead of a traditional key, the electronic fob, which incorporates the remote-lock, remote-unlock, and trunk-release functions, goes into a receptacle in the dash. The car is started by pushing the fob in and holding it, and it's turned off the same way. The instruments, featuring blue and red lighting for night visibility, are easy to read. As an unexpected convenience, both the console box and the glove box are large and air conditioned. As in many luxury cars, the parking brake is actuated remotely from a button on the dash.

We like the bright LCD and the simple navigation system for the various car functions.

High-quality power-adjustable sport seats are part of the inclusive Sport Package #2 with which our test car was equipped, and the rear bench has noticeably more legroom than in earlier Passats. Cavernous is an appropriate description of the trunk.

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat's navigation system, with its bright LCD, gets high marks for visibility. Destination entry is by direct alphanumeric entry or by a location on the map, and it is possible to get directions to various secondary destinations near the primary destination. Well-marked context-sensitive keys next to the screen facilitate its use. When a destination is chosen, directions are read through the audio system and displayed not only via a highlighted route on the map but also on the Volkswagen Information System (VIS) trip-computer screen between the tach and the speedometer, directly in front of the driver. The VIS, controlled from buttons on the right steering-wheel spoke, controls and displays information on fuel economy, distance, compass data, and vehicle-convenience settings. When nav-system route guidance is in effect, the regular VIS functions are unavailable.

The Passat's fob doesn't use a key. Instead, pushing the fob into a hole in the dash starts the car.

With the 2006 Volkswagen Passat's navigation system installed, the optional CD changer is used for audio entertainment. It too is controlled simply and logically by the context-sensitive buttons to the side of the screen. We had no problem playing standard CDs or CD-Rs, but, unlike the standard CD player, it wouldn't play MP3 CDs. The sound quality from the optional 600-watt, 10-speaker Dynaudio system is very good. Satellite radio, either XM or Sirius, is standard in V-6 Passats but was lacking from our early-production example.

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat has not only gone upscale in styling and appointment but also has advanced considerably in the chassis and engine departments--not that the previous generation was deficient. Lighter materials and improved design efficiency result in reduced weight and improved strength, rigidity, and crashworthiness for the unibody structure in comparison with the old Passat. The suspension has also been upgraded, with MacPherson struts in front and the old rear torsion-beam axle replaced by an independent four-link setup. Although similar in design to the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta's suspension, the Passat's uses more aluminum for reduced unsprung weight and improved response. It also isolates the occupants from road shocks to a higher degree, appropriate to its more upscale position.

Handling is very good on the 2006 Volkswagen Passat, aided by the electromechanically assisted steering, which dispenses hydraulic fluid and sets the car up for inclusion of active steering and lane-departure systems in the future. The steering has a light touch at parking speeds, with more effort appropriately at higher velocities. On the whole, the Passat is far more fun to drive than many of the competitive midsize sedans and gives the luxury marques competition.

Paddles on the steering wheel let you choose gears for the six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Volkswagen's VR6 has always been an interesting engine from a technical standpoint, with compact packaging from a narrow 15-degree angle, and the new version improves upon the old in all ways. It's even narrower, with a 10.6-degree angle, and it uses a single cylinder head and a set of chain-driven camshafts to actuate four valves for each cylinder. FSI direct fuel injection, variable-intake and exhaust-valve timing, and a variable-length intake manifold contribute to both high power and low emissions. With 280 horsepower at 6,200rpm and 265 pound-feet of torque at a low 2,750rpm, it bests the old Passat's V-6 engine by 90 horsepower and 58 pound-feet--and it even beats Volkswagen's 4.0-liter W8 by 10 horsepower. It's rated LEV-II by CARB.

There is only one transmission choice for the V-6, a six-speed automatic with both sophisticated electronic and Tiptronic manual shift control. The six-gear ratios allow good acceleration and economical highway cruising, and the engine's great torque often makes gear choice a moot point. It shines in highway driving and is even pretty good in the drive gear on winding roads, although manual shifting does bring out the engine's best there. At times, it seems a little balky at slow speeds in traffic, when manual shifting and staying in second or third gear can bring better response.

As might be expected, the 2006 Volkswagen Passat with the V-6 engine is capable of seriously quick acceleration. Its 6.6-second 0-to-60 time puts it in some exclusive company, and a good front-suspension design keeps torque steer at bay while it does so. With its refinement and performance, think of the Passat not as a larger Jetta but as a smaller and more affordable Phaeton. EPA mileage ratings are mixed, with a decent 28mpg on the highway but only 19mpg in the city.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety puts the 2006 Volkswagen Passat in its top 10 cars for safety. In addition to its structural integrity, the car offers standard front, front-thorax, and full-length side curtain head-protection air bags, with rear seat-thorax air bags optional. All occupants have three-point safety belts and adjustable headrests; the front headrests are active for additional protection. There are seven crash sensors: three internally in the air-bag control unit, two in the front doors, and two in the lower C-pillars.

Active safety starts with good handling and steering response, aided by strong four-wheel antilock disc brakes and the Engine Braking Assist system. The electronic stabilization program is standard, as are traction control and electronic differential locking.

Another option fitted to our test car was bi-Xenon headlights with the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). We found it very useful at night, as not only do the headlights swivel with the steering to illuminate the road ahead even around corners, but auxiliary cornering lights cover what are too often blind spots to the side with bright light in sharp turns, such as into a driveway. The standard LED taillights are also praiseworthy.

For noncrash safety, courtesy lights in the outside rearview mirrors and perimeter lighting turn on when you are parking your car at night.

The 2006 Volkswagen Passat is covered by Volkswagen's standard limited warranty for 4 years/50,000 miles, although wear-and-tear items are excluded after a year. The power train gets 5 years/60,000 miles of coverage, and corrosion coverage is offered for 12 years. Four years of 24-hour roadside assistance is also covered.

Lemon Lemon

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: Only has 38,000 miles and has been in the shop a dozen times having small things go wrong.

Review: Don't buy it. Went on a road trip and had to go straight to the dealership on the way home because it was breaking down from driving it for over 4 hours. Now I am not sure if I want to take it any further than to work.

Poor reliability and handling, irritating parking brake

Pros: Larrge car safety with multiple air bags.Good fuel economy.Good high speed cruising.

Cons: Feels ungainly and lacking agility round town. Parking brake is a complete pain and quirky in operartion.Engine is noisy.CANBUS electronics equate with unreliability and expensive repairs. The electric steering has an imprecise feel.

Review: This car is ideal for safety and economic motorway cruising but a pain arround town. The parking brake personifies why it can be an irritating car to drive; a mechanical handbrake is so much easier to use, simpler and more reliable.

Awesome Car with Awesome Power

Pros: Navigation, Large Sunroof, Engine Power, Ipod Adapter

Cons: Cd Changer doesn't play MP3 CDs.

Review: I have had my car going on 4 months and I absolutely love it! The horsepower from the V6 engine is more than enough. It has awesome low end torque. For the amount of horsepower the MPG is pretty good. I average 22-24 city/ 29-32 highway. The navigation also displays exact directions on the MFD within the instrument cluster. The leater interior is a thick leather. The interior of the car is very well made, very solid to the touch. The truck space is awesome, and also has a full size spare in the truck with a full size rim and tire ready to go incase of an emergency. The lighting in the car is very nice with it's red and blue interior lighting at night. Turn the mirror knob to R and the mirror will automatically move down to see the curb, but the car into drive and goes back to regular position. Volkswagen does make an ipod adapter and it works great with the car. I can control everything with my steering wheel controls. One thing that is very nice is the way that volkswagen has integrated manual sunshades into the rear doors and the rear window. The autohold function is very nice and does work great on steep inclices or even when your in stop and go traffic during rush hour. I have the regular monsoon stereo system in my car and it sounds great. I can only imagine if the monsoon sounds this good what the dynaudio sounds like. I have 2 air filtration sytems, one is a charcoal filter and the other is a hepa filtration sytem. The multifunction display tells me everything from current outside temp, freezing conditions on the road with a snow flake warning to my current MPG while driving. My passat has alot more to offer than most cars and has more hp than most BMWs.

Passat is a lemon

Pros: the Passat is a really cute car I love the interior

Cons: Not reliable

Review: I got my Passat in Dec '06. Feb '07 the VW dealer had to order me a new seat from Germany in which they had my car garaged for 40 days due to safety issue, then I have had transmission issues, all types of sensor lights keep coming on and I have finally settled with VW of America for compensation of all my previous car payments,VW ruined my new car experience so all in all I had a lemon. Sorry VW :(

LEMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

Pros: Nice Features with the Sport Package and fun to drive

Cons: 3 visits to the shop after 1500 Miles

Review: I've had the car for 1500 miles. After the first week, I had to get the strut bearings replaced. After a month, and 500 miles, the left xenon light went out. Three weeks later, the battery died while sitting in my garage for three days over a long weekend. Today, a month to the day, the same xenon light went out again. It's a great car to drive, and it has power. However, I'm regretting the decision.

Great on Gas

Pros: Quality and Ride and fuel economy

Cons: No Bluetooth and Key Fob

Review: Traded in my 2002 Passat in May 2006 and bought a 2006. This car has more interior room and the ride and handling is even better.
I just took a trip from New York City to Chicago and back and averaged over 35 mph with the 2.0 4 cylinder engine. The turbo lag in the 2002 is gone and this car is very peppy.

The fit and finish is above any 30,000 car on the market today as well overal quality and feel of the car.

The only con is the key fob, it takes a little getting use to. Also the car lacks Blue tooth (No big Deal).

Anyone looking for a new car must test drive this car. It would be a very serious mistake not to.

Also, as to the repair history, I have not had any trouble with the car or the service dept.

Cons: Isn't Free, Can get pricey

Review: Okay guys I reviewed the 2005 passat 1.8 turbo and let me tell you I wasn't a fan. 2006 2.0 turbo brought me to love the VW name again. From the fit and finish to all of the extra features you wouldn't see in any other car and not skimp out on any cheap substitute speaks alot about this new majestic automobile. You guys want to talk tech this car has every feature under the sun from the navigation that can be displayed on your gauge display to the custom central computer configuration this car has beat every car on the tech side until you hit the acura rl and the infiniti m45. I dare you to test drive one and leave the dealership without new keys!!!

An Audi A6 In VW Skin

Pros: BMW 5 Series Interior & Performance for less Ca$h

Cons: Ride on LA Streets Could Be Smoother

Review: I am very happy with the purchase of my new 2.0 Turbo Passat. This car is a dream to drive on the freeway and around town. So many people I come in contact with have never sat in or driven a Passat before. However, you [must] take a test drive before shelling out 27K on a Toyota.

Additionally, the Passat shares the 2.0 Turbo engine that is currently in the Audi A4. My car came with Audi/VW's Tiptronic trany that allows me to shift the car like a stick. Wow!

My Passat averaged 24 mpg city, while getting close to 33 mpg highway which is excellent for a mid-sized barn burner. Well, there is nothing more to say than to buy this car! See you on the freeway soon.

German refinement at an affordable price

Pros: Sophisticated 2.0 Turbo direct fuel injection engine has more horsepower than the 2005 V6 poweplant

Cons: Front seats are to wide, they just don't feel snug.

Review: I just bought the 2006 Value edition in March of 2006. Comes with a 2.0 Turbo direct injection engine which amazed me with the amount of power it provides, and wonderful fuel mileage. It definetly feels faster than my previous 2003 Jetta 1.8T. In fact this car has more horsepower than the 2005 V6 Passat powerplant! The 6 speed Tiptronic transmission is silky smooth. Engine is quiet, without any vibrations experienced. And the car does not rattle while driving on rough asphalt or gravel roads. The car is also very roomy with plenty of rear leg room for 3 adults. Got it for $24,900! includes leatherette seats that look and feel like real leather. This car is a great value! Feels so much like an Audi priced thousands more! I highly recomend this car.

Good not Great

Pros: Save, good ride

Cons: Bloototh not available, manual state few features that the car dosen't actully have.

Review: I own 2006 Passat 2.0 T from September and i enjoy riding it but i'm very dissapointed that the car doesn't have bllototh feature that is included in leather pckg. I was told by VW that they will have them soon , but when i called the main office they said only in Europe. Manual reads that the key has features which it doesn't "open and close windows from outside with the remote" . No heated wipers and those are the little things they are selling but you don't get them or they won't work in American version.
I feel that i paid for things and no one in VW actully knows what you getting. In the store they will tell you different. Call main office before purchase.

Great Car! But really, no Bluetooth

Pros: Really enjoyed driving my '06 Passat - rides great, and peppy 200hp 2.0T is fun to drive!

Cons: Pricey with all the goodies - like Nav and 18" Wheels.

Review: Been a treat to drive, get lots of looks and oogles!

Bluetooth integration is available, but NOT in the US or Canadian markets - all the "pieces" are there (i.e. Telephone button on steering wheel, and microphone and speakers in overhead module), but it isn't available to those of us in the US or Canada.

I still love the car, though!

Review Mistaken

Pros: Germany Engineering

Cons: Can't think of any

Review: I just bought a 2006 Passat and the review is wrong in the Cons on 2 things -- 1) cell phone integration is available with a Bluetooth phone. 2) my factory VW 6 CD changer DOES play MP3 CDs

Also, you can get a integrated iPOD connection

I agree with the pricy V6...that's why I got the 4 cylinder 2.0T...great gas milage with power!

A big upgrade from an Accord or Camery. Overall a great car.

Pros: Power, 6sp Triptronic, AWD, Vault like structure, Excellent fit and finish.

Cons: Higher maintinence costs. Less reliable than Asian offerings.

Review: This is a great car, and one I'm looking forward to buying in '07. It's a big step up from the Accord and Camery (mid-sized American offerings are poor to say the least).

The thing I like about VW and the Passat in particular, are you can have your cake and eat it too. You get all the equipment, options and technology of the big boy German Cars (like the A4, 330ix, and C-Series Benz's) for about 10 Grand less.

For instance, compare a Passat to a 330ix BMW. Option the cars out identically with: V6, 6sp Triptronics, AWD, DVD Nav, Perf suspensions, Xenons etc...etc... and the BMW will run you about 47 grand, while the VW comes in at around 38 grand. The VW is a great value.

Some people just can't imagine paying that much for a VW. They have decades of legacy to live down, even though it's been eons since the days of the Fox and the Rabbit. Old memorys and preconceptions die hard.

If you stroll into a VW dealer nowdays (many also sell Audi's given the fact that Audi is part of Volkswagen AG) and you'll find some pretty fine automobiles that don't have even the foggiest resemblence to anything VW was building ten years ago. The engeneering, fit and finish of VW's today is compareable to anything Audi, BMW or Benz is putting out.

If you want a solid, high performance German car, VW deserves a look. Your pocket book will thank you when you buy it, insure it, and resell it.

Sadly, VW (and all other German cars...not just VW, but BMW, Audi, Benz) are not in the same league as the offerings from Japan in the reliability department.

Personally I've had good luck with VW, so next year I plan on trading my '03 GLS in on the Passat.
