Although Volvo built its reputation on safe--and boxy--vehicles, that hasn't stopped the company from producing the occasional stormer. The 2006 Volvo S60 R sedan is the latest in a line that included 1995's cult classic, the T-5R. But the S60 R ups the ante with a host of computer-controlled functions to both produce speed and keep it under control. With styling befitting its capabilities, especially when outfitted with our test car's Sport Body Package, the S60 R looks the part both inside and out. Fortunately, the driving doesn't disappoint. A microprocessor-controlled six-speed automatic drives all four wheels via Volvo's Four-C (continuously controlled chassis concept) adaptive suspension, with three chassis settings available depending on conditions and mood. A Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DTSC) system is standard on the R model for braking slipping wheels and reducing power if necessary.

The R-specification engine is a 2.5-liter straight-five that makes happy use of turbocharging to produce a satisfying 300hp. Dual overhead cams featuring continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust valves keep the engine from wheezing before the turbo spools up. But Volvo didn't completely take leave of its brand identity in outfitting the S60 R, as a host of safety and a few green features round out the otherwise brawny package.

Our test car was equipped with the $2,400 Premium package: a glass moonroof and an HU-850 audio system with a six-CD in-dash changer. It also had the six-speed automatic with manual gear selection, a $1,250 option, but it lacked the $2,120 navigation system. Sticker price with options came to $43,735.

The provocative and comfortable 2006 Volvo S60 R evinces the dual nature of this performance car from the safety company. The gauges, unique to the R models, have familiar readable Volvo digits in silver on a soft-blue background and silver watch-dial bezels, a nice combination. An aluminum cover for the automatic shifter is another R-only touch, as are the power-adjusted full leather sport seats, which were black in our car, with blue stitching matching the exterior. The pleasantly thick steering wheel has audio and cruise controls at thumb's reach. Dual-zone climate controls are well laid out, with a pictogram and large buttons to direct airflow without any fuss.

The attractive gauges in the R version of the S60 have blue faces and watch-dial bezels.

Sound from the premium audio system comes through 13 speakers controlled by Dolby Pro Logic II surround. We found the quality well balanced, without too much bass or treble. The audio system includes an iPod adapter, but we weren't impressed by its performance. The adapter for the iPod uses a jack meant for a 10-disc changer and fools the system into thinking that the first 10 playlists on the iPod are CDs. You can navigate the playlists, but they don't display any track information.

From the outside, like the rest of the Volvo family, the S60 R has a softer line than cars from the recent era of refrigerator-influenced styling from the Swedes. Now curvy at the corners and with pleasant details such as the waist-high contour running the length of the body to form the taillight's cutout shape, Volvo's sedans haven't suffered unduly under Ford design influence. Maintaining brand styling despite a shift from longtime familiarity is no mean feat but can be said to have been accomplished here.

The 2006 Volvo S60 R feels purposeful the moment you sit behind the wheel, and the engine fires with a suggestive growl from the exhaust. The car steps away smartly from rest, and the feeling of involvement is immediate, the ride noticeably tight even with the chassis in the Comfort setting. The microprocessor-controlled, six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, an R-only option, has a Sport mode for slightly higher shift points in the first two gears. Volvo's Auto-Stick feature allows manual gear selection and offers reasonably quick response, although we wondered if the six-speed manual might not have felt more engaging.

Power is plentiful throughout the aluminum engine's rev range. Usable torque (295 pound-feet) is available from low revs (1,950rpm), thanks to dual wide-range valve-timing variability. But it's when the turbocharger is at full tilt that this motor takes on a different character. With DSTC and active yaw control directing the power to all four wheels, the 2006 Volvo S60 R stays planted and pointed in the right direction. These electronic aids can be switched off with a very deliberate sequence of button presses, but it takes lots of pedal pushing to invoke them anyway.

The driver can easily change the chassis setting between three modes.

Our car's optional 18-inch wheels and Pirelli P-Zero tires gave excellent grip and feel through the variable-assist steering. But they contributed to a sometimes jarring ride, and pairing them with the Sport Body Package's chin spoiler gives every speed bump or driveway entrance the potential to require a trip to the body shop. The chassis doesn't offer any ride-height adjustment, but the three electronically adjustable modes--Comfort, Sport, and Advanced--are suitably different. The Advanced mode dictates sharper throttle response and minimal shock-absorber movement for reduced body sway, and it would make a track day in the Volvo a lot of fun.

Braking is done via four-piston Brembo calipers proudly on display through the five-spoke wheels, clamping on big ventilated discs all around. ABS is naturally standard, as is electronic brake distribution for panic stops.

Fuel economy is EPA rated at 18mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway, which is not unreasonable in a sedan capable of 155mph.

Perhaps secondary to buyers of this particular Volvo, safety is nonetheless taken as seriously in the 2006 S60 R as with the rest of the lineup. Dual-stage front driver and passenger air bags, along with side-curtain air bags, line the passenger compartment, which itself has a host of safety-cage elements intended to transfer or dissipate the energy of a collision from any direction.

The Side Impact Protection System includes a carefully reinforced body structure and transverse tubes under the front seats to transfer force to the other side of the body. Energy-absorbing materials are used for door panels and trim. The car also includes Volvo's antiwhiplash system, which allows seat backs to both move and tilt backward, giving more gently in two stages should a relatively low-speed (up to 20mph) rear-end collision occur. The steering column is designed to collapse telescopically in two places in a head-on collision.

An interesting environmental touch Volvo has been offering on production vehicles since 2000 is PremAir, a catalytic coating on the radiator that converts ozone in the air passing over it into oxygen. Another unexpected feature--this one optional--was power-folding rear headrests, presumably for easier folding of the rear seat backs but with the added benefit of being able to improve rear visibility from the front seat.

Volvo's standard comprehensive warranty is good for a period of four years/50,000 miles, and a four-year membership in Volvo's roadside-assistance program is also standard. For 2006 models, the 7,500-mile diagnostic check and oil/filter change is free of charge at any U.S. Volvo dealer.

S60R is the best car for the money

Pros: Very well built. Practical; like owning 3 cars in one.

Cons: Volvo stopped making them. Unleash the power of this car which could be easily between 330-360 hps.

Review: This car can be driven on the race track in advanced mode, in sport mode on highways or in comfort mode on uneven road surface. The engine is very powerful and responsive. The sound system is superior and the seats are best in this cars class. I am not going to list the safety features because everybody knows that Volvos are the safest.

love to drive this car! It is fun!

Pros: Car is very fast and great acceleration especially in advanced mode. Really hate to give my S60R up but it is the end of my lease and would like to sell only because I have had Volvo for the past 11 years. Wish I could afford to buy it .

Cons: The tires that came with the car give it a terrible steering radius. When they were worn I replaced them with an all weather tire and that helped with the steering radius.

Review: I don't know much about the mechanics of the car because I really don't care to learn it. However, I love to drive and this car is a great car to drive, especially when you have to pick up some speed and go. It is a rocket!

A very spirited and fun to drive sedan

Pros: Horse Power and handling are awesome

Cons: Volvo service seemed to be a little lacking. every time i take my R in for service they are able to damage a rim or tire. the upper engine mount is an obivous weak point along with the hood liner burning agianst the Turbo piping. Very Poor turn ratio

Review: I was totally agianst looking at the volvo's due to the stigma of the soccer mom car. After driving the standard volvo i could see that they knew a little about comfort, The get an "A" in that catagory. I was looking for something with a little more substance. While looking online i found the "R" and decided that i should give them a second chance. Wow! i couldnt believe that what i was driving was a volvo. It has a sports car feel when you sit down into the drivers seat. When my initial drive started out i found that i was quite conservitive when it came to the cars abilities. This machine given the right set of rubber underneath has the ability to cling to most any road surface. The all wheel drive and traction control system get an A plus. The engineers out did themselves on this one with the exception of the poor turning radius (comparable to a Chevy Suburban). Maybe a comfort mode that eliminates the push of the rear wheels for a little added fuel economy. If you plan on taking this car to its limits, somewhere around 155 MPH, keep in mind that it seemed to remind me of my old 68 pontiac catalina. I feel that it could have used a little more down force. maybe that ground effects package fixes this problem but i was unable to get an answer back from the dealership on this one. The sound system was nice for factory but when the extended warranty runs out I will be looking for my local Alpine dealer for something with a little more to offer. as for the rest of the car Volvo kept with their staple and complemented the R with all their finest safety features. Fully adjustable seats power heated mirrors, HID headlights, and many more amenities. If Volvo brings The R back to their stable in the near future I won't hesitate to upgrade to a newer version but until then I will drive the wheels off this one. because if it holds true to the volvo name I should have many years remaining on the road for this one.

Very happy after 25000 miles

Pros: Great comfort, great power, great sound

Cons: turning radius

Review: I picked this car up at the factory in Gothenberg and drove it for 2 weeks in Europe, including the unlimited speed (in some places) German Autobahn. I can attest to the vehicles chip limited speed of 155mph -- the advanced suspension setting REALLY shines above 120 mpg, but am very happy with the sport setting below that. Here in the US, the car provides great comfort and power for highway travel. The optional stereo is simply amazing. I have had no problems with the car in 18 months and 25,000 miles. Overall a great car which makes my friends with other luxury sports cars a tad envious.

I love the Torque, This is an awesome car and the Turbo is loud and clear. Clean Lines, Fun to drive

Pros: Everything about it

Cons: Not sure yet

Review: I purchased this past weekend and was really really picky on my decision on which car to purchase. I found the VolvoS60 really safe feeling. I have the stick shift and love the 6th Gear. It's roomy, sexy, and mature looking. I've heard only great things about this car and I can't wait to find out. I purchased an extended warranty and a Gap clause.

An excellent car for the money

Pros: Seats, Chassis control actually works, smooth engine, very safe

Cons: Rear seat room is cramped, visibility could be better

Review: Just got the car last month in Titanium Grey. I love the color(makes the car). I did'nt expect the chassis system to make much of a difference, but you can definitely tell. The seats are just spectacular, on the city or on the highway.

I have read elsewhere that the turning radius is horrible, but I have yet to have a situation in which I cannot turn around. There is still snow on the ground where I live and the awd works great. I skipped on the body kit and am glad for it. The car is low enough as it is. The A and C pillars make for very bad visibility although the drop-down head restraints help. The one thing I wish I did differently was get the manual trans. instead of the auto. The auto works great, but I can just imagine how fun this car would be with the manual transmission. Overall, this is a wonderful car for all situations.

Volvo's Masterpiece

Pros: Amazing performance, beautiful styling, comfort

Cons: Base Pirelli tires are poor quality for everyday driving

Review: I have had this vehicle for seven months, and still take great delight each time I have the opportunity to drive it. The S60r provides a unique balance of performance, comfort and style.

The interior is beautifully appointed, and has the feel of a much more exclusive, even exotic, vehicle. The detail of the leather trim, to the aluminum interior touches, to the very unique dash with its blue and silver backlights, each aspect of the interior exudes class and attention to detail.

On the road, the car's performance is stunning. It handles better than any vehicle I've ever owned (it corners around .88). The AWD suspension continuously readjusts itself at each point in a turn. The only time I nearly lost control - going too fast on a somewhat wet surface - the suspension was able to self-correct, and in an instant, corrected my foolish maneuver.

I highly recommend the manual 6-speed transmission, which provide quick and crisp shifts as well as a very quick (5.5 seconds) time to 60MPH.

The only two 'problems' I had with this car related to the performance package very low-to-the-ground body trim. This element, while looking very stylish, was completely undriveable in a day-to-day environment. It would bottom out every time I parked my car. Eventually, I had Volvo remove these. Also, the stock tires, Pirelli Rosso's, are horribly unsuitable for street driving. Mine required full replacement when I hit a small pothole on a freeway. I replaced with Michelins, and have had no further problems.

Overall, I am very pleased with this vehicle, and would highly recommend it to people seeking an unusual 'wolf in sheep's clothing' vehicle - one that offers amazing sports car type performance in the body of a stylish sedan that has enough room for four people.

Great Car !!!

Pros: Fast, reliable, best interior in it's price range

Cons: turning radius a bit 'wide'

Review: I have a 2006 with about 20k on it. The car has been totally reliable and is a lot of fun to drive. Want to pass the "driver" in front of you? Piece of cake.

Excellent brakes.

The iPod adapter works just fine. No real need to have the song title appear on the radio...that would be a bad distraction and Volvo knew that when they designed it.

Average 23 mpg.

Speedy Family Hauler

Pros: Great manual shifter, Love the trick suspension, killer sound, crazy fast

Cons: low tech iPod integration, Turbo weak above 90F, goofy clutch

Review: I love this car. I traded in a 2002 Audi 225 TT for this when my little girl was born. High quality and very sporty for $10K less than an S4. No bad things to say except the iPod integrator is low tech for 2006. It sounds great, but it's like the old Bimmer system where the system tricks the car into thinking it's a 10 disc changer. Also, the clutch take-up happens in the last 2 inches of travel, making it difficult to drive slow and smooth at the same time. I can nail the gas and shift perfectly, but cruising from 1st to 2nd makes my wife green. Car looks great, and for a Volvo it gets some looks - mainly from 30 yo+ women - a little different crowd from the TT :)

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a sporty euro car that can haul a family without seeing itself on the street every two blocks.
