"Oh that I have lived to own this car"

by sheepmesa on July 8, 2006

Pros: Stunningly beautiful inside and out, awesome roadability, very comfortable

Cons: There are not cons--the most perfect car I have ever owned or driven

Summary: The XK coupe is the most beautiful, attention-getting car on the road. It is sleek, simple, clean and subtle. The XK makes a BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche and just about every other car look boring and unimaginative. It is refreshing that in an era in which nearly all cars look alike, with box-like rear ends, exaggerated curves and sharp edges, and in which designers are resorting to tacky retro features to try and jazz up the look, that Jaguar and its design chief, Ian Callum, have come up with a car that mesmerizes with its simplicity. On the performance side, the XK is superb in every respect. It is very quick, holds the road magnificently, especially on turns, has an incredibly fast transmission, has well balanced steering (not too tight or sensitive) and delivers a smooth ride. Inside, the car is comfortable and quiet. The appointments are luxurious, but not ostentatious. The instrument panel and controls are remarkably simple to use. Unlike most cars these days that have many dials and a myriad of buttons, the XK has only two dials and relatively few (but enough) buttons. This gives the car an interior look nearly as sleek as its exterior appearance. The touch screen is like an Apple computer operating system. Totally intuitive. You don't have to read the manual to figure out how to use the various features and controls. The navigation sytem is the finest I have seen. Overall, this is an awesome vehicle.

I owned 2 previous Jaguars XJ, and XJR, before they looked like Fords, and I went back, after 8 years, 1 Lexus and 2 Audi A8. I am driving the XK 07 since 4 weeks and it is pure pleasure. Superb Performance (far enough for our idiotic highway limitations and cops hunting us down relentelessly) great comfort (agreeable surprise after driving the excellent A8). I also agree that it attracts a lot of attention, (which can be embarrassing when people (almost) walk around your car while you're waiting a a red light in order to have a better look...) but if you didn't want attention, you would be driving a Saturn. Do like I did...tint the windows and enjoy....
The only flaw so far, as the reviewer noticed, the Bluetooth system is under par. Following the advice of my dealer, I dumped the previous Motorola I owned for the Razor.....and just found out that Jaguar and Verizon don't have an agreement...therefore my phone has limitedd capacities. (No downloading of the address book, which doesn't help...) Other than that...owning an "Aston Martin" for $50,000 less is not a bad deal! Let's be real!

I completely agree with the reviews by sheepmesa and George Najm. I have owned the 2007 Jaguar XK coupe for several months and have driven it extensively in the city, on winding country roads, in the hills and on the freeway. The ride, handling, performance, comfort and appearance range from very good to extraordinary. This view is shared by the authors of numerous reviews in magazines and newspapers and on the web, including USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Road & Track, Jaguar World, AutoWeek, Top Gear, Auto Express, Winding Road, Cars.com, Autocar.co.UK, CNET (which grossly and unfairly underrates the XK) and many others. Most, if not all, of these reviewers had the opportunity to drive the XK for periods ranging from several days to a week or more. Yet, some posters continue to denigrate this car on sites such as this. Take the comment on sheepmesa's opinion by DBreeze8. I doubt many objective observers would describe the XK as just "a pretty decent looking car," claim that the reviewer was exaggerating and then assert that the XK is in the same category as the look alike cars listed in the opinion. The only cars that resemble the XK are the Aston Martins, which leads us to the comment by capnsarcastic (Unique? Not Really). First, I would bet that if sheepmesa knows about Ian Callum, he or she has seen a DB9. Second, nowhere in the opinion did sheepmesa claim that the XK was "unlike anything else on the road" or that it "looks like no other car in the world." The opinon referred to "just about every other car," "nearly all cars" and "unlike most cars." These terms do not mean "unlike anything else" and "no other." But, since we're on the topic, I don't think it is wrong to call the XK unique. Yes, it bears some resemblance to the Aston Martin DB9, but even a casual glance reveals many obvious differences (headlights, grilles, hood shape, body creases, haunches, hatchback, side mirrors, fender vents, taillights, side rear windows, rear end and overall muscularity). I would say that these differences make both cars unique, certainly by comparison to the BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus.

I agree the XK Coupe is a nice looking car, but unlike anything else on the road? Idon't think so. Obviously you've never seen the Aston Martin DB9. The jag could be it's little brother. If you put the two side by side you would swear they were designed at the same time. Unfortunately the Aston Martin was out years before the Jag. Of course I think the Jag's a nice looking car, I've always liked the look of the DB9, but to act like Jaguar came out with a car that looks like no other car in the world is rediculous.

After testing an array of Germans, I repeatedly left unsatisfied and felt the price was never justified. After testing the XK Coupe, however, I was shocked by it's beauty. The exterior has the presence of an exotic. The interior has such a high level of finish-quality, which is like wiping your ass with the finest silk. The car is so incredibly agile thanks to its stiff aluminum frame and light body. Its throttle, paddle shift transmission, and steering reaction times are instant. I ordered the first XKR Coupe in the Philadelphia region, and I love that only 50 will be made the first year for the whole country, and 200 per year thereafter. (Only half the dealerships in the US are allocated an XKR Coupe.) This car won't be a-dime-a-dozen like SL's or CLS's. The XK has sufficient power, but I can?t wait to get behind the wheel, hit the start button, and wake up 420 of the finest Oxford-educated horses, and hear the intoxicating exhaust note in the XKR! The driving experience left me feeling giddy for weeks. No car I have every driven has given me this feeling before.

In regards to the negative comment on the sound system I have this to say: First, that comment contradicts the praise the upgraded sound system gets from the editor in the CNET video cast. Second, no matter what car you buy or how expensive, the base sound system is always a disappointment because most people don?t care enough about a sound system for a car company to justify making it a standard feature. Furthermore, from my experience with upgraded Lexus, MB, Audi, and BMW sound systems? all which sound good but not amazing? the system in the Jaguar blew me away. (I use to think the Harman Kardon in my BMW was the best system out there, but due to its low total wattage it only sounded good for a year or two.) Point being that all base sound systems are garbage, so to even mention the base sound system as a ?con? shows the writer had trouble coming up with any substantial complaints about this vehicle.

although its a pretty decent looking car, i believe that you are exaggerating way too much on its appearance. like you said, there are many cars out there that looks similar, and this car is in that category.
