Summary: I wrote a full review of the S400, LS600h and S63 AMG on epinions under the name Bigtruckseries. I am an OWNER of the S550 so the changes in the S400 are obvious immediately to me.
The problem is that the S400 doesn't have enough power to justify its cost. It takes over 7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour while the S550 takes just 5 (or less).
What Mercedes Should have done was built an S-class that uses regular gasoline (87 Octane) and offered a smaller V8 engine with valve deactivation technology. The Ls600h outshines this car in terms of power, but its not the clear winner of the contest because it costs way more ($130K) around the entry price of an S63AMG.
As far as ride quality goes - its hard to argue that this is probably one of the top 3 riding cars on the planet. The drive feels a little floaty due to the S' immense weight and length, but, it passes as a luxury limo, or as a luxury family car.
Massage seats that are heated/ventilated; more space than the Audi A8, LS460 and BMW 7 and museum quality interior decor make the S400 passable for people who aren't interested in driving more than 45 mph.
