"Got Much More Than I was Expecting"3.5 starson by Rwilmont
Pros: Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, Front & Rear cabin legroom, Cabin Design, Trunk Capacity, ride, fuel efficiency
Cons: No ESR off switch in the SE
Summary: I bought my '11 Jetta SE as part of the Certified Pre-Owned program, so take that for what you will. I've driven a '98 Jetta GT for the past 13 yrs and loved it. When I lost it in a recent crash (Ins Co totaled it), I went for another Jetta without hesitation. After some searching, I found a low-mileage SE and fell in love with it almost immediately.
I personally don't understand a lot of the complaints about the Jetta I've read in other reviews. If you want to be encapsulated (read: Isolated) from your driving environment, go buy something $10k more expensive; People complaining that the dashboard is now "hard plastic"--are you fondling your dash while you drive? People complain about the engine note, too. I honestly don't see what they're going on about. The 2.5L 5-cyl does sound *different* than the 2.0L 4-cyl I had previous, but not unpleasant. Lastly there's a lot of commentary out there about the styling being horrible, boring, nondescript, etc: Point out something in the same price range whose styling "stands out from the crowd." A lot of cars' styling looks somewhat similar right now: if you really want your vehicle to stand out, for whatever reason, the Midized Sedan market probably isn't the right place to be shopping.
I'm very happy with the items included in the Convenience Package on the SE I bought. I wouldn't have bothered with Bluetooth, but it's really nice to have, as well as iPod connectivity. Volkswagen's "lower end" models (Golf & Jetta) have historically stayed mostly within the reasonably-priced everyday-people-carrier category. When they recently started adding more features/performance to these --and the accompanying price crept up-- some consumers started crying foul. Bottom line: You get what you pay for. Problem is, a majority of people now expect to get a $25k car for $19k.
