"doesn't live up to it's promise; not the greatest value..."
Pros: wonderful display, new apps, GPS potential to be exploited
Cons: battery life is ridiculously short; certain features I would expect are missing
Summary: So I unplugged my iPhone at 7am, made about 3 phone calls, no texts, 20 min web surfing, light email reading only, one trip with GPS, and the battery was at below 10% by the time I got home tonight at 8:30. That is way unacceptable to me. I think GPS is the REAL battery suck here, so probably need a car adapter plugged in whenever you use GPS. But even so, battery life should be at least 36 hours of standby mixed with light use. Even yesterday I finished the day with 1/3 charge after no GPS use. You can't go anywhere for a weekend without a charger. This makes the utility of the iPhone 3G so nonsensically limited.
Basic functions one would expect are not available: like adding attendees to an event you put on the calendar, and searching the map for a location listed on an event.
About MobileMe: syncs as promised, but it is very limited. MobileMe won't read in subscription calendars you have on iCal on your mac, so it doesn't push to the iPhone. MobileMe server is really unreliable right now. THis product was released before it was really properly beta tested. Backup utility doesn't work, and online support is nil.
AT&T 3G downloads on the web browser seem to be more often at dial-up speeds. 3G service is spotty at times.
I expected better from Apple. I'm not surprised from AT&T.

To eathey: DipSet didn't say turn off the phone; he/she said turn off the 3G; you can do that and the phone will work on EDGE instead of the battery hungry 3G.

To the ignorant reply - turn the phone off when not using? Why would anyone want to do that? No one would ever be able to call, and then the iPhone would just become a web surfing multimedia device. The PHONE function would be lost, I'd say 98% of the phone calls I receive on my cell occur when I'm not using it - if it was off, how would anyone get in touch? Don't say VM either, cause that's just stupid. Yeah I'm gonna turn my phone on every couple of hours to check my VM... pffft...

The battery life on the new (and old!) iPhone is so bad, I will have to get a 2nd phone to keep with me at the end of the day, or keep a charger with me at all times! I was hoping the 3g would have better battery life than the original, but it is worse. Cell reception not that great either!

Maybe you should turn your 3g off when you're not using it.....duh???
