  • "Misleading pricing - data plan $40/m required"
    3.5 stars
    on by sebabb

    Pros: style and function excellen

    Cons: Misleading advertising of pricing

Summary: Great phone, great features, awesome style, rotten marketing and dishonest pricing.

Put together an itouch and a cell phone for less than the itouch, its too good to believe. And it is. I thought with wi-fi so prevelant I could get this phone and skip the outrageous data plans ($40/month) but ATT and Apple are automatically signing up buyers for a dataplan whether they want one or not. And where do you find this pricing requirement. Buried on att's web site at the very bottom of a "terms and conditions" statement. I guess there wasn't room next to the price tag. Great phone but won't be buying one unless I win the lotto.

Data Plans: An eligible data plan for iPhone is required. This data plan covers data usage in the U.S. and does not cover international data usage and charges. If it is determined that you are using iPhone without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee. © 2008 AT&T Intellectual Property. Wow, thank you very much. My wife wanted one of these but she didn't know about the data plan requirement. I find it amazing that these other people are getting on you about this, I certainly didn't know about the requirement. But many people love Apple, even though all of their stuff is overrated and overpriced.

I'm looking into this phone but am seeing so many different opinions! Wanted to clarify though that I am a user that has a treo 680 *without* a data plan. I don't know if they would do that for me now with another treo, and I did ask if they would break the policy for the iphone, they said no. I had to go to management to get the treo without the data a couple years ago.

actually ocbrad ive had a blackberry curve from att for about 9 months without a data plan ( i cancelled it after a couple days cause it was terribly slow without 3g support) so yes smartphones can work without a plan

You, obviously, are unfamiliar with AT&T and smartphones. All require a data plan, and the data plan for the iPhone is exactly the same as for AT&T's Blackberry and Mobile Windows based smart phones - $30.

What did change is AT&T changed the minutes plan available. That was the $10/mo increase. You can't buy any smartphone - iPhone, Tilt, Blackberry, etc. - without a data plan. THE PHONE WON'T WORK. Next time you do a review, (1) make sure you know what you're talking about, and (2) spend some serious time with the product (i.e. at least a month of regular use).

Data plan is $30 per month not $40. If you're going to bash Apple or AT&T for what you say is lying, then DON'T LIE YOURSELF. Every iPhone (including the original which has been out for over a year) requires a data plan as does every blackberry and treo phone.

I totally agree...AT&T should be taken to court under a class action lawsuit...They say its cheaper for the phone but, the net cost to the user is more because they raised the fees to cover the discount on the phone. AT&T are misleading the public!

I appreciate your opinion but this was not a fact that was hidden from the public before or after the launch. The fact you had to buy a data plan was very highly publicized. I saw this info on almost every story written or broadcasted about the 3g iphone before it was launched.
