    "Fantastic phone; paltry network"

by gopnick on April 27, 2009

Pros: The iPhone is simply the best phone, best e-mail device and best Internet device I've ever used. Now that it syncs with MobileMe and Exchange, I get all of my info over-the-air, reliably.

Cons: The lack of cut-copy-paste and MMS were two of my three my biggest cons... however, the newest software update will add support for these features. Push notifications are also coming, and they have been sorely missed. The iPhone also needs flash.

Summary: The worst thing about the iPhone is its marriage to the AT&T network. It's simply awful. To be certain, the overall coverage is less than Verizon. But that isn't what makes me angry; what really upsets me is their inability to keep the network running. When on the 3G network, my calls are dropping (along with ALL of the other phones in our office) roughly once every minute and thirty seconds. This is absolutely ridiculous, and it is costing our company money. We've ordered that all iPhones be replaced with phones from Verizon as a result, moving our entire company over to Verizon in the near future. I'd love to see a CDMA or LTE iPhone.

The push e-mail function is almost perfect, and the iPhone requires fewer restarts than any Smartphone I've ever owned, including Blackberry and Windows Mobile. Call quality, when you are able to connect and stay connected, is fantastic. Pages render quickly and correctly in Mobile Safari, though I'd love to see Flash Player installed. Adobe and Apple really need to stop their peeing match and take care of customers.

Finally, the App Store makes the iPhone what it is. Not much needs to be said here.

In conclusion, let me just say this: I always thought I had a Smartphone before, but the iPhone is the first truly smart phone. All of the others are mere imitations - cheap knockoffs, no matter how much they cost. It'll be a long time before I consider anything other than an Apple iPhone.
