"good features from the hardware perspective"
Pros: I was looking forward to the video option in general but Apple limited it to 3G S. Definitely there are speed improvements and also the magnetometer. I really would love to use it when out star-gazing and not look in my box for the little compass.
Cons: ATT
Summary: The 3G S is a compelling phone for the video option but if you are an existing user of 3G then there are really no good reason to shell out $200 more just to get the cool feature of video. I would recommend going for a Flip HD cam for that money. The magnetometer is not so compelling either to demand $200 as you can get a good compass for about $50 (really high end).
If ATT were not too greedy and let me upgrade, I would book one now.
Apple
Not having multi-tasking does make a difference.
New buyers and switchers may want the features, but in general the 3G at $99 is more compelling now.
The battery life is important for my use but I really do not care much as my Belkin FM transmitter charges my phone in the car and I have to drain the battery by over use ever two weeks.
Apple must understand that many of the buyers of the iPhone are responsible and mature users. They know what is needed and what is luxury. Optional multi-tasking is really wanted / needed. Keeping the option limited using alerts is not going to help. Apple has agreed to turn by turn GPS. Imagine how much of juice it will suck if you do not keep it powered. Why not do the same for multi-tasking. Apple already notifies users about the 3G option. Think about it. There should be an option to switch on multi-tasking when need and then switch off and all Apps go in single mode.
While I agree with Apple about the juice running out, I would prefer that Apple allowed the multi-tasking with a preference setting. If I use Multi-tasking then I pretty well know that I will be running on low battery. There are situations when I need multi-tasking like being on IRC and ssh to server to modify settings. All at the same time. Or I am checking my BOA account and want to know the exchange rates too.
With the "I want to fleece you" attitude, ATT is shooting itself in the foot. I am sure this time around ATT won't be selling a million iPhones before the end of their contract because the existing customer base will not shell out the extra money for the 3G S and then it will be sour Apple(s) for them.
