"I fell in love all over again - Sorry honey" on by twhite0910

Pros: Touch screen is very responsive; display is incredible; movies/videos look terrific; Cover Flow is way COOL

Cons: no way to mass delete emails; AT&T coverage spotty

Summary: Knowing that this was version 1, I expected some disappointments, but instead I'm very happy with the iPhone. There are a few downers, but nothing I can't live with for now and some things that I hope are fixed in firmware updates.

Biggest disappointment is AT&T coverage in my house and neighborhood (coming from Verizon which was much better), but I don't talk on my cell phone that much from home so I can live with this. Being able to use my own wi-fi is really cool and very fast. I've not tried surfing with EDGE.

Overall, this phone is totally awesome. Even my non-gadget loving hubby thinks it is cool. He had never experienced You Tube until tonight and then I could not get him to give me back my phone. I copied a DVD (using SlySoft's AnyDVD and CloneDVDMobile) to my iPhone and the quality is amazing!!

I probably would have waited for Verizon to get the HTC Kaiser (P4550), if they even do, until they did away with their international option which means I have to pay 69 cents per min in Canada and Mexico. I travel to both about 3-6 times per year and usually have at least 100-150 minutes in calls per trip. Verizon has lost an 8 year customer due to this change and taking forever to get a replacement for the XV6700 (still don't have a date for replacement). I had a Treo 650 (which sucked) and a Blackberry 8803 (which was ok but missed touch screen). Neither compare to the iPhone!!

I'm still getting use to the single finger typing (not there with the thumbs yet). I am a very heavy emailer and I think with just a few more days of practice I'll feel quite comfortable. The predictive text is really good and it is so nice to have a touchscreen again. I ported my number from Verizon and it took about 26 hours to get activated. Well worth the wait!!

I had some problems with call volume at first using my bluetooth, but I think that was because of poor coverage not the phone itself. In areas with good coverage I've had no problems.

The phone is much smaller and lighter than I anticipated. The Apple store I bought my phone from had a huge display of test phones so that you could feel and touch them before buying. Don't let reviews from people who have not even touched this marvelous piece of technology influence your decision (they need to get a life). Go to the store and play with it yourself and then decide.

"Raises the standard for mobile phones" on by clamwave

Pros: touch screen, intuitive interface, coverflow is just amazing, bluetooth 2.0, wifi, Cingular, YouTube, OS X, True browsing expirence (Safari), Maps, Guided turn by turn directions, looks, no space....

Cons: EDGE, no GPS (turn by turn directions though), price? (I think it is 100% worth it)

Summary: I am deeply impressed by the Apple iphone. Before using it I was skeptical (would the keyboard be decent, worth money, super slow EDGE, ect) after trying it out at the Apple store I was SOLD, my concerns eliminated. I am not a "apple fan boy" and will try to give a unbiased review below. To truly get a real feel for the iphone you have to try it. The iphone and all included accessories (USB cable, Dock, Charger Block) are all high quality and most likely will not break with normal use. Oh ya the box is great as well. Starting out the activation process is a snap (for most people, if you add options or keep your number you may have to wait 6-24 hrs for activation) you just plug the iphone in and sync with itunes, then pick your plan. If you are a itunes user apple already has your credit info so no need to enter it twice. After picking your plan your phone should be activated. If you have trouble and your provider deactivates your old phone and the iphone is not yet activated you can pop-out the SIM card (little slot at top of iphone) and use it with any other GSM phone! Ok.. to the phone! Starting off the home screen is easy to use and selecting icons is no trouble for large fingers. All of the build in apps are great. I found myself using the YouTube app more than I expected, videos can be searched for or you can select from most popular ect the quality is great also. *** Just a note I found EDGE in my area (Chicago) to be not that bad, loading times for YouTube, maps and the internet are acceptable (for me). Safari is the real web and works great I found it better than I expected to browse the internet (and I had high-expectations). To zoom in just move your fingers across the screen or double tap it to zoom out pinch your fingers or double tap again. The load times over EDGE are ok and WiFi is great. You may be thinking how will I use the internet on the go.. you most likely already have some great ideas, but the iphone makes it even easier to use the web than ever. You can tap a phone number in the webpage and the iphone will call it for you... I already used this to call in a pizza. The map app is even better than using Google Maps.... at least cooler. You can enter a location and choose a road map or sat. imagery. You zoom in and out the same as you would a webpage (pinch thing). You can search for nearby locations and they will come up as listings on the map and you can select one to get info on it (address, phone, website ect.) I have used this to find Starbucks in my area (they are everywhere of course). You can enter two different addresses and the iphone will map a path for you providing turn by turn directions, works just like a GPS. Almost everything you can do on Google Maps you can do on the iphone, except Street View. The ipod is amazing and coverflow is just..... WOW just awesome. I have found battery life to hold up for Video, Music, wifi ect to sightly below Apple's Specs, but still very good. I haven't tested standby, but I would imagine it could last 8-10 days. Ah the price.... yes it is expensive, but if you think of it as a cheap laptop is suddenly sounds reasonable (ya its not a laptop, but for your average user its close). You can read PDF, Word, Excel documents, but not edit them. The keyboard takes some getting used to, but I am close to having it mastered. The iphone is very durable, I have not dropped it, but I watched PC World drop it over and over and it barely was scratched. Overall it is a very good product and the full web capibaliality makes it great for corporate use as well (status, real-time data, it would be great for the police). Eh, don't take my word for it GO TO AN ATT OR APPLE STORE AND TEST IT OUT......

"STILL NOT ACTIVATED 20hrs after registered LORD HATH THE JESUS PHONE FORSAKEN ME" on by lunkhead

Pros: feels nice size and weight

Cons: Still not working - CUSTOMER SRVICE HANGS UP ON YOU NUMEROUS TIMES

Summary: I can't get through to customer service as when you finally get the ring through it just hangs up on you. On rep actually picked the phone up and just left it live on thier desk while they had lunch...boring backround conversations so I hung up after 3-4 minutes. There were no lines at 7pm in my small tiiwn Newark, Delaware so I bough one. Besides my Sprint Samsung spent a day under water and the display did not work anymore so I really needed it. I just wish it worked and someone at ATT would HELP ME!!!!!SORRY just a 1 rating as it doesn't work as yet

    Updated
Special Thanks to Shaylynn Doolittle a customer service rep in Canada who took the time to find a solution instead of just blaming "the system error" She found what the error was and solved the problem and finally got my phone activated July 1st 8:30 Pm eastern
KUDOS TO SHAYLYNN they need more like her

"Potential, but not quite there" on by dandrewsmd

Pros: Beautiful screen, great UI, well built

Cons: EDGE (very slow), Call quality, many more (see below)

Summary: I'll start my saying that I have used several smart phones over the years, most recently two blackberrys and a treo. I have both a PC and a Mac at home. I am impressed by many of Apple's features, but I am not a #1 fan. This review is based solely on my iphone experience and has no underlying motives. Yes, I do actually own the iPhone.

I really wanted to like the iPhone. I went to the local Apple store and was very impressed with what I initially saw. I took it home and had no problems activating it and had it up and running in a flash. I'll list what I found to be strong points and weak points and hope you'll heed this advice: Be patient and wait on version 2. I believe Apple will fix some of these issues and make this an awesome phone. Right now, there are just too many issues. I will be returing the iPhone tomorrow and waiting it out in hopes that Apple will listen to its customers and address some of these problems.

    Photos:
Great app. Sincs wonderfully with itunes folders.

    Google Maps:
Almost great. Lacks GPS which makes it close to useless if you're really lost. It is good getting you around if you're familiar with the area.

    Weather, Stocks:
Widgets pulled straigt from the Mac. Simple but functional.

    Safari Browser:
A wonderful full-page internet experience. However, the crawling speeds on the EDGE network really detract from Safari. Some sights are reasonable while others can take several minutes or not load at all. Very easy to navigate. If it ever makes it to a 3G network, I'll blow the competition out of the water.

    Calendar:
Very handy. Sincs well with ical as well as entourage, yahoo, and outlook. List, Day, and Month views. (No Week).

    Camera:
Simple, maybe too simple. Point the camera at your subject and press the button. Ok, you're done now.
Does take clear photos. Note: you can use these photos as wallpaper, post them to a blog, or e-mail them. There is no MMS (picture messaging). If you do email, you're largely dependant on EDGE speeds and you can only send one pic at a time.

    IPod:
Awesome. Of course, I know the storage size is a limitation for some people, but you just have to really manage your music. I found the headset jack to be a non- issue since I use apple ear phones, but I can see your frustration if you have bose or whatever. The iphone does have an integrated speaker, but it is pathetic. (Both for speakerphone and music).

    Phone:
Leaves a few things to be desired. Since this is the main function of the iphone, I think it should have a dedicated hard key. I believe it requires a few too many clicks to call someone. The call quality is marginal and ATT service is pretty bad.

    E-mail:
For users of main stream mail servers, you'll really like it. Set up is a breeze and e-mails arrive beautifully. You can view attachments, but not save or edit them . This is an issue for those of us who are accustomed to having MS Word or Excel access in our pocket. If you use a corporate mail / exchange server, you'll be left disappointed. Although Apple stated the iphone compatable, after working with our IT department, I found it simply would not work. Apple recommended I forward my corporate e-mail to a yahoo account that will in turn push it to the iphone. No thanks, Apple. (Again, wait and I think this will be resolved soon in the next release)

    Hardware:
    (-) Lacks GPS for navagation.
(+) The iphone is a pleasure to hold and see.
(-) The rings and the speakerphone are way too quiet
(+) The screen is absolutely stunning. It seems to be scratch resistant. I carry it in my front pocket. No issues.
    (+) Dedicated silent switch.
(-) The touch keypad is a pain. I did get better on it after about a week, but it's still too cramped for most men's fingers. It's useable, but get ready for some mistakes.
(-) No cut, copy, paste, or highlighting text.
(-) The ATT network is slow, has spotty reception, and weak signal stregnth in places it should not.

In closing, I do like the iphone better than any other smart phone I have owned. But for now, I'm going back to the old trusty flp phone and waiting for some changes. Before you get locked into a two year agreement, resist the urge and wait on an update. I think you'll be glad you did.

"Email Web Great - Cellphone Sucks" on by travdo

    Pros: Email, Web

Cons: Cellphone Connection and Sound Poor Quality

Summary: Im testing the iphone. Its features are great. However its cellphone service is awful. My verizon is much better quality. The iphone also has poor sound quality for using as a cell phone. The ear piece is not loud enought to hear clearly. The reception from ATT is bad too. It is scrambled and a lot of static. If ATT can improve its network and the iphone can replace the earpiece speaker with a better one this phone would rock. I'd like to keep this but I think I'll got back to Verizon cause I really need to use a cell phone that works.
