I realize you are having a problem with you iphone. But have you realized that no company is a perfect company. Apple JUST made a move into the cell phone industry this year. Much later than, Microsoft who had the support of Motorola, Blackberry and other companies that have been making cell phones for year. Apple decided to take a leap of faith into the cell phone industry, just like what they did with the ipod. It took a few versions to be somewhat of a great product. Think about it, would they want to waste all their efforts on a phone on a first release. I mean they probably realize that all the APPLE FREAKS (people waiting at 5 am to get that stupid phone and paid a ridiculous price) will pay for them. But they want to see if they will drive the non-apple crowd to probably purchase the phone. And they have successfully done that. After a long period of time of working for a few other computer companies; I can promise you, that you most likely get a much more improved phone for the next generation of iphones. Let me finish with off with COME ON! You think every stupid computer company does it perfect the first time around, Look at Microsoft, dell, HP, Compaq, and so on. The first LCD or Plasma TVs think before you buy the first generation of products. AOL 2.0, windows 98, ME (biggest failure ever). I?m sorry you decided to flush it down the toilet on the Iphone but think next time before getting a first gen. of any tech product. You may not be able to flaunt it when you walk down the street the first week it comes out, and amaze people. ?WOW HE/She has the iphone? :-0 But what are you going to do? Wait a longer time for a better product, or bend over and get the first gen? If you are looking for advice next time, do your own research and realize the trend on how first gen technology is one big problem. If you have any questions you can respond and I can answer them.

Ok first of all texing while your driving you dont sound very smart you shouldnt be doing that anywayz so i wouldnt pay to much attention to this guys review

I think you're review was very detailed and helpful. Every product has its pros and cons and your personal assessment was very honest and fair. Apple fanatics tend to ignore the cons and praise everything made by Apple as perfection. I would know because I'm surrounded by a few Apple worshippers. Any cons I point out about Apple, it's like I said something blasphemous. So I applaud you for giving a good, honest, detailed, and unbiased review on an Apple product.

It's sad that people make uninformed posts especially when they haven't actually owned an iPhone.

Total costs for my iPhone for two year contract: $1200, including the cost of the phone, activation, and my monthly cost. You're assuming every person in the universe is on individual plans, for the rest of us who have several phones in our plans it's incredibly cheap and totally affordable. My iPhone is only $20 a month.

3G vs. Edge is laughable. Why did Jobs choose Edge? BECAUSE IT'S AVAILABLE. Edge network covers 13,000+ cities while 3G covers only 120. While some people live in main cities and never travel this isn't a problem, but for everyone else outside the coverage area they'd be screwed. Get your facts straight.

It's beautiful, it's NOT a PDA but it is an excellent smart phone with incredibly comparable prices. Don't be so biased on your opinions against it, your rating is ridiculously low.

People give me their browsers and say "Look it's as good as the iPhone" and I start laughing at them. They show me their video's they've downloaded onto their phone and I think "Pixelated heaven, yes! This is MUCH better than the iPhone!" Ha! It's a joke really. Get a reality check.

A lot of things you are complaining about were either a no-brainer or known ahead of time before release. Like you said, you took a chance buying the iPhone and look where that got you. You could have easily waited a couple days to have someone put together an in-depth review, but you caught on to the hype and bought the iPhone on the day of release. As being Apple's very first phone, expect drawbacks. Apple is known for making some very fine products, but no one is perfect the first time around. As for you advising Apple to stay in their area of "Expertise" regarding the iPods, just look back on how far the iPods have come. The first generation of iPods had flaws as well, but look at the latest iPods now. I predict the next generations of iPhones will better suit your needs. Again, you took your chances and in the end, you lost yourself $50 (restocking fee). Your loss, your mistake. Wait and do research next time. As Cnet has stated, "The Inconvenient Truth, Look Before You Buy".

  • reply by: drew20kid on August 10, 2007

I joined CNET after reading your review just so I could comment on how absurd it was. For one, in no way does any cell phone deserve a 1 for a ranking out of 10. Any person who does that is just plain ignorant. Now every person does have the right to their opinion like you said and I do agree with that. But seriously, do you have to keep telling everyone that your review is worth reading when in reality it's not? I would never trust the opinion of someone who can't even spell trivial words such as offensive*, waste*, and especially* let alone what they think of a technological advancement. Flaws in the Iphone are to be expected. You must realize that Apple is innovative. Soon, we will see many imitations from other companies that may even be better than the Iphone. I'm sure you'll be backing that company up saying how revolutionary and ahead of their time they are when in fact they did nothing but copy someone else. Good luck with whatever phone you see fit. But by your review...I don't think that phone exists.

  • reply by: specic on August 7, 2007

Like so many, I followed and anticipated the GLORIOUS delivery of the iPhone.

Two days before its delivery I spoke with the sales staff at the local AT&T store and discussed my options of renewing my contract. (It expired and I waited 3 months to upgrade the contract to this phone) Finding out that there were no incentives, rebates, deals... to purchasing this product over another, I started to question the price. You see, many of us own an iPod already. Then the salesman hit me again!!! NO 3G? You mean it is on the slower network?

Wait a year folks. Heck, wait two and get the new Chocolate at Verizon like I did w/ a 4 Gb card. (And only spent $120.00 after my corporate discount!)

It can do everything the iPhone would have done for myself and MORE.
I can push my work e-mail to the phone.
I still haven't figured out how to sync the calendar with my outlook, but that is just a matter of short time now. (Susteen?s: DataPilot usually works well for phones.)
The GPS Navigation is EXCELLENT and I like how it recalibrates and makes driving with its verbal announcements easy.
You can manage your music on the phone, sync with Media Center, download to the phone directly (Although still to pricy at 1.99 per song, buy the music on line at 0.99 and sync it over).
    Games are great and plentiful?
The Voice commands are great. Bla Bla Bla ?.

Then in two years, go back to AT&T if / when they evolve this product a bit more and make it truly as great as they claim. I do think they have set the BAR high... they just can't jump over it yet!

  • reply by: wtmackey99 on August 3, 2007

I know everyone is gonna lash and say how can you comment on something you don't own. Well I am so get over it. The fact of the matter is I've played with the phone in stores and my cousin went and got it opening day and I played with it with him for most of that first day. I admit I was jealous until the thing started to reveal its true nature. HYPE! That's all that is there. This phone doesn't do anything my Moto Q can't do or the Treo 700 my dad has, or the HTC Mogul my bro has. The phone is too expensive not to have any real features (ringtones, picture mail, 3rd party apps, stereo bluetooth). All in all I am SOOO glad I didn't cancel my service to switch to AT&T.

  • reply by: avi44x on August 3, 2007

I thought from the beginning that the iphone was going to be a flop and now with all these negative comments I know it as a fact.
I use blackberrys and although I hate the fact that they don't have wifi and 3G they're good for what I need them for......oh and the touch screen keyboard is so lame.

  • reply by: eomick on August 3, 2007

I am sure there are many other phones with advantages and disadvantages over the iphone. The reason that so many love the iphone isn't just blind loyalty to apple, but because there is finally an option that works well with macs. The frustration you experience with iphone I experience with every device I try to use with my mac. You need to be creative to get the iphone to talk to exchange servers etc, but now at least we can do it from the mac end - which for me at least is less of a headache.
    So live and let live.

  • reply by: dirty55409 on August 1, 2007

I wish people would look past their Apple Fetishes and realize that this is a sub-par product. And you're right future versions will be more polished but even Cnet had to Hype it up (lol possibly paid to praise it?) lol either way I'm glad that you wrote such a spec specific review or lack of specs I guess is more like it. So people can realize hey don't waste your money! Get a Pearl and save yourself 350! None of my friends who I've recommended the 8100 to have complained about their purchase.

Anyways good job on the review :)

  • reply by: fredybarr on July 30, 2007

I agree with you to a certain extent. In my personal experience with iPhone, I didn't see much of a problem. Of course, I am used to owning a Treo 750, in which I experience lagging, and app shutdowns on a regular basis.

Personally, the iPhone is an upgrade from my previous phone. the 3G problem is a bit irritating, and the keyboard could have been better, but overall, it's an OK phone.

Hopefully, the hackers will make this phone better; look at what they did to the PSP...it's the best handheld device in the market.

  • reply by: mattyfinn on July 29, 2007

I can't believe Serggus' review has sparked a flame war. The guy very clearly lines up his criticisms and simply lays them out there. Even if I were convinced that the iPhone were for me (which, btw, I'm not) I would at least read what he has to say and feel better informed about it.

I'm a long-time Apple fan and defender but I realize that not every product my favorite tech companies put out will be stellar (doesn't anybody remember the Lisa???). The world just doesn't work that way!

In addition to being an Apple fan, I'm also a Palm fan and I've had Palm Pilots with big color screens that could make phone calls, carry data, play music and surf the internet for years now; that's right, *years*. (Palm also just came out with a little stink bomb of its own, but that doesn't mean everything they or their corporate descendants do from now on will be doomed).

So, it's clear that for me, v.1 of the iPhone is not the right bandwagon to jump on, but I'm confident that Apple, which, as Serggus rightly points out, has upped the ante on certain facets of cellphonololy, will continue to upgrade and tweak the iPhone and eventually it will be able to do what the most demanding users expect of it.

If today's iPhone is, in fact, exactly what you want it to be, then, hurray for you. If, on the other hand, you are a bit disappointed with some of the features, then why not speak your mind about it? Apple needs that kind of feedback to improve the product. Serggus did everyone a favor by putting his review out there.

  • reply by: cjoy383 on July 27, 2007

I would wait at least a few months before making ANY purchase of a new electronic item- just to see what type of problems occur. After that time you can make a decision as to whether or not you want to buy it.I think down the line with some improvements, the iphone will be a good thing.Currently, At&T has bought out Cellular One and will take over their networks on 01/01/08. Cellular One has a great network--at least where I live!

  • reply by: rorealis on July 25, 2007

Like a fish distracted by something shiny, an unpleasant end awaits you. You can only blame yourself for falling for the inane pop culture hype. Now how will you post comments while you wait in line for a Harry Potter book. Oh and you shouldn't be on the phone when you are driving, much less texting. Jaysus! I can't believe you admit that, you must be from LA.

Some say iPhone vs Smartphones is like Porsche vs Ford?

Iphone made for individuals with Class? Sure, it does it all, with class: iCrash, iHack, iBug, and iTunes is the log keeper from now on :)

Applying an analogy like Porsche vs Ford to iPhone and Smartphones is absolutely hideous!!!
Detach your feelings from the iPhone and use a bit of logic. (I know it's a pretty device, and captures your heart, but it doesn't mean you should marry it.)

LOGIC is your friend! - Avoid making mistakes based on feelings.
So here is how your theory is busted of Porsche vs Ford:

Porsche is a company that have been making cars since 1938. Clearly what you see out on the streets are not their first models. These are experts that have been designing cars for ever, their looks, their performance, their reliability, and that's what makes it classy!
However you can buy kit cars, and fake your way through it.

So iPhone by Apple is more like a first car by Yamaha. It's a great company, knows what they are doing with music stereo systems, guitars, pianos, even jet ski. So releasing their first car will definetly not put them into the same class where Porsche or Ferrari now is. Ehh, they will be in the same class with Ford. In fact Ford uses Yamaha engines on one of their Taurus (sho)

You know, iPhone is a first phone product by Apple, they can make computers that are used by 5% of the world, that doesn't automatically puts them in the Porsche category of phones.

They just entered the phone market, and have quite a ways to go.

Even Apple computers, they are simply not the best. Geared towards consumers, otherwise they would have served more then 5% of the world if they were the best.
But saying that, doesn't take their pretty-as* away from them. Yea they are still pretty.

So yea they are in different leagues. PC serves most of the business world and consumers: all the banks, corporation, government, military, wall street, most of the Internet. Apple? A tiny 5% most of them college students... :)

    Smartphones (Nokia, Crackberry, Microsoft, ...)
Are phones that have been out there, did their first mistakes, and keep making mistakes developing new technology. This is the reason why they are more technically advanced then iPhone. They have more features, they can do a lot more. That's what makes them Smartphones. :)

I could not say that they are quite the Lamborghini, but certainly not an ?Escort? with roll up windows.

Iphone ? A self proclaimed Porsche, bit more then they can chew

BUSINESS users best get ready for the CURVE that T-Mobile will be launching this year...

    CURVE 8320 with WI-FI...

I tried out the AT&T CURVE for 2 weeks on my T-Mobile Business account. Of course I UN-LOCKED the phone... Easy stuff...

    The Curve was AMAZING!!!

    GREAT BUSINESS PHONE!

    * Email and text messaging (SMS and MMS).
    * BlackBerry Maps, the best way to find your way.*
    * Integrated address book, calendar, memo pad, task list.
    * Web browser.
    * 2 MP camera.
    * Instant messaging.
    * Media Player. Audio and video playback in a variety of formats.1
    * Full QWERTY keyboard.
    * Tethered modem capability (lets you use the device as a wireless modem for your laptop or PC).
    * Speakerphone and Voice Activated Dialing.
    * Bluetooth® capability for hands-free dialogue via headsets and car kits - mono/stereo headset, hands-free and serial port profile supported. Bluetooth stereo audio (A2DP/AVCRP).
    * 3.5mm stereo headset capable.
    * Integrated attachment viewing.
    * Compatibility with popular Personal Information Management (PIM) software.
    * High resolution, light sensing screen that adjusts lighting levels automatically for ideal indoor and outdoor viewing.
    * Dedicated Send, End and Mute keys, a trackball navigation system, plus a user definable convenience key.
    * 64MB Flash memory plus microSD expandable memory slot.2

I think that I am most impressed with the 2.0 megapixel digital camera. 2 megapixels is a high enough resolution that you pictures don?t necessarily look like they were taken with a camera phone.

There were, however a few obvious omissions from the BlackBerry Curve feature list. Neither GPS nor Wi-Fi made the cut? At least not in the first release of the device. I personally am not a big fan of GPS in a mobile phone, however the iPhone has captured this feature and brought it to NEW LEVELS, yet the lack of Wi-Fi with the CURVE is a flaw, especially with the BlackBerry Curve most likely first appearing on the GSM networks that are considerably slower than CDMA in the U.S., could be seen as a missed opportunity for RIM.

Over All the CURVE is light weight and VERY SEXY in looks.. It's not bulky and the performance for Business People is an excellent choice.

SHUT THE **** UP! It honestly seems like people think they are part of something bigger by following all the hype that Apple has created in their products. The matter of the fact is that these people know absolutely nothing about the technology they are dealing with. The iphone is greatly lacking capabilities that other phones on the market (the Nokia E70, go read about it you Apple idiots) and yet they continue to use these definitive terms like "it is THE BEST PHONE". Umm... get your head out of your ass. Apple is selling you old technology in a shiny casing for a ridiculous amount of money (they do this with their computers too. Get yourself a PC. Same **** inside only about half the price). Hey, if it makes them feel more important by carrying it around and they need this confidence in their life then ok. Go ahead and shell out the overly expensive price tag, but don't make yourself sound like an idiot for saying it's the best phone. You're not fooling anyone, not even yourself.

Your review is not only inaccurate but full of personal attacks on s own..namely aganst apple!!!should have bought stock huh???LOL

  • reply by: ArtisticGeek on July 19, 2007

Apparently you don't. This device was never marketed as a smart phone or PDA, yet you had these SUPREME expectations of it.

And, it looks really stupid for someone to ***** about an appliance, purchase it, and then complain about it not having certain features when they knew it wouldn't have these features they speak of to begin with.

  • reply by: Serggusa on July 19, 2007

For all the people that take every word literaly, and not able to improvise or apply it to life past what is written, I will clear things up.

    1st) I don?t text and drive.
If I have 15 seconds on a stoplight I will reply one handedly, still being fully in touch with my surroundings, but that can?t be done with an Iphone -- Simple as that! :)

2nd) I knew what I was getting into.
Yes it was all over the place with all it?s capabilities and limitations. But I?m an observer, I like to touch after I read. Who knows maybe it will be worth keeping for ?all? the features it has? And it?s worth the 10% loss if I don?t like it. I also saw tons of people standing in line that were being lured into it, simply out of their incompetence, thinking they are getting the best of the best out there, and for all they know it probably is the best for them. LOL

    3rd) This is a review.
Here are some comments I found catchy and true:
?I find it ridiculous that people try to stifle a person's right to an opinion, especially when you're gripes are not off the wall.

Good review. I didn't know there were so many Neo-Apple fascists on these boards who would rather personally attack you with insults than create a dialogue.? -casualsuede
    or
    ?Small man Complex?
?Usually I say small man complex but in this case it is the small "i" complex. Small men usually are aggressive and offensive and I am seeing a lot of that here. Those poor ipeople are so inherently lacking confidence they can't stand any constructive criticism.? -farrid

    4th) ?Nice features?
    a) Waiting 2 minutes to open www.yahoo.com (forget browsing on it)
    b) Mandatory you pay for the data plan with this device and yet you still can?t use it as a modem for your laptop (wired or over Bluetooth) ? other phones? You can.
    c) walking with a USB cord everywhere you go so you can get data off and on any computer from your device or the other way around.
    d) EDGE I still can?t believe this: UMTS: 3500?14000 Kbits vs EDGE: 144-200 Kbits

5th) I have a laptop, I don't need another one. New phones that are out, belive it or not, they are capable and have these features.

Apple certainly made other phone manufactures a challenge on working out better designs and stability.

I see this as a big boost in the cell phone industry, in a year we should see revolutionary designs from different companies all over.

I like apple, I use it from time to time, but sure don't like some (not all) of their users. They think they're ready to rule the world after figuring out how to eject a CD.

Same thing with this Iphone, it's shine blinds them from realizing that it's far from the most modern featured device.

(And yes I know they didn?t advertize that, but COMPARING to other products out there - released, you can state the fact that it doesn?t have a lot of important features that are on modern devices. If you are not familiar with these devices or features, I won?t sit here educating you.)

So let?s not lie to our selves saying black is actually white because it shines. Stick to the facts. And the fact that it doesn?t have stereo blue tooth is not necessary a bad thing for everybody, not all people use it as IPOD, even though it is advertized as best IPOD ever made.

VOIP? I used it whole summer of 2006 in europe on a MS Smartphone v 5.0

Well, maybe not every one is in tune with the latest developments, or using the monopolized market to stay in tune with latest developments...

I was using Skype 1 year ago on my europe trip on my Window Mobile 5.0 device and it worked great!! (hotels, tickets, friends...) 2 Cents per minute around europe :P (that is for Skype)

    Along with ->

Tom Tom navigation, with full 3d graphics, full blasted features of a modern navigation, in all of 5 different countries i spend time driving around, not knowing them, down to the point where it warned me to slow down due to speed limit changes - as I was passing the sign for the speed limit change :P

Publicity? well if you only read what they post on the apple sites of course you will be behind my friends.

Got to keep up to date

Anyone that reads this review can easily see that Serggus's technological expectations of the iPhone were unreasonably high, even considering the media hype. He certainly had the right to ask questions about the features of the unit before he made his purchase. And to be completely honest, the intelligence level of anyone who texts while driving and then has the nerve to publicly complain about something impeding that behavior, is, well...er...um...you go ahead and decide for yourself.

It is funny how all the replies bash you and don't back up the phone. Cause it does suck I guess. Can't beleive it lacks all those things. I will wait until sony makes one or hp.

Cabbage Patch Dolls, Microsoft Xbox, Windows Vista OS, $18,000 LCD and Plasma TVs (what they cost when they were first released). You're the FOOL that has to have these kind of products when they are first released

Meanwhile those of us with patience and sanity will wait for the price to be dropped in half before we buy, or more importantly until the bugs are worked out.

You already knew that AT&T was the exclusive contract cell phone service provider before the IPhone went on sale. You also new that it had a touch screen and limited data transfer before it went on sale, yet you complain about it and spend your $800.00 on it anyway. (Ding Dong)

The smart people will let you be the guinea pig as you have demonstrated, and write reviews on this item and others, and purchase this item like you apparently have, so we can make a better informed decision of this machine before deciding to buy

I'm glad that you can't use this overhyped gadget to type while you're driving, cause this, and using cell phones while driving has become a very dangerous common practice. Even if you are at a stop light.

Your gripes remind me of all the silly sods that bought the Whirlpool Calypso clothes washers that eventually resulted in class action lawsuits filed against Sears and Whirlpool, cause. hmmm the machine didn?t clean clothes and also damaged them

  • reply by: cpipkins on July 14, 2007

Not really sure how you were tricked, but let's review:

    1) The phone's been "hyped" for a year - on AT&T!!!

    2) Everyone knew it would be running EDGE (anyone paying attention that is).

    3) There were reviews out there showing the keyboard - and that it's almost useless. (Oh and BTW, you shouldn't be texting and driving at the same time anyway; it's dangerous)

    4) As far as transferring to a computer, then what's the USB cable for?!!!

    And Finally:

    Business apps, push email, Office docs, yada, yada, yada;

    5) IT WAS NEVER MARKETED AS A SMARTPHONE - IT'S AN IPHONE (like "ipod", get it?).

Luclky I didn't fall into the trap due to the fact that I usually wait until something is at least a year old before I try it out , this way I get to read tons of user opinions and hopefully by then they got all the bugs worked out of the device ,and as the novelty wears off the price comes down. A few of my freinds couldn't wait another second , they just had to have one , as a matter of fact the day the product launched , the AT&T store had a line 3/4 of the way down the side walk before they even opened. I've heard nothing but bad things about this supposed state of the art Technicalogically advanced over priced piece of crap as referred to by the people I know whom went out and got them on launch day. Just chalk it up as a lesson hard learned. Stick to Windows Mobile. Good Luck Friend.

    ...gives a review.

This is the 1st gen model. I think it will be an excellent buy at about 3 gen once all the kinks & complaints are worked out. I played with a co-workers and see the potential but I will wait until Apple does a little more development. It certainly is pretty!

This may be redundant as I basically agree with Jeepguy1972's contentions, however I would like to add a few things.

First, the EDGE network, no Blue Tooth or MMS and lack of removable SD cards are the only real problems that you have griped about.

The no dedicated keyboard problem is nowhere near a problem, merely a matter of opinion. You may like having cheap, small plastic buttons to press on while you are driving but for the sane and regular individual, it is generally not an issue since most do not text while operating a 4,000 pound vehicle at high speeds.

Second, almost the whole list of features at the end of your post include features which most laptops don't have as a basic feature. Even if you want them... buy a Dell or something and stop complaining about how the iPhone isn't your dream phone. It may have its problems but I'm sure no Skype isn't one of them.

    Ok buddy,

First off, get your head out of the clouds! Ok, you made a couple valid points, such as the Edge Network being a bit older, and a bit slower than 3G networks, but hey, its better than some, like the damn Nextel Network I am on.

But, lets get a grasp on reality, Skype VoIP?? Video conferencing??? What do you think this device is? Its not meant to be a laptop replacement. I don't think any Microsoft Mobile Smartphone has Skype and video conferencing, because if they did, I think there would be some serious press about it.

If you want all of the things that you mentioned in your post, then strap a laptop to your back!! You probably think that Windows Vista is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The only thing that I will agree with you on is this: the phone should have been designed to take advantage of the 3G network, and an external SD card slot would have been nice.

Once again, do not forget that this device is NOT a laptop replacement! Yes, it is $499 - $599, but there are many other smartphones out there that cost a lot more than this one does, with many features that you can't even find because they are buried so far in the menus.

My final recommendation: GET A GRIP ON REALITY!

did you just start using the internet yesterday?

how on earth do yo have a list of features that long that were a surprise to you when the entire phone has been completely divulged on their website for months...

they did't say anything about half the stuff in your list so why would you have thought it would be there?
