• "BlackBerry new "Curve" 8300 Vs. the new 8800"
1.0 stars
on by BillNYC

Pros: Spell-checker / Larger keyboard

Cons: No Wi-Fi or 3G support...

Summary: The BlackBerry 8800 is still be a better fit for power business users with its GPS and 3G support functionality and lack of a camera (an increasing security concern at the workplace - no cameras at all in high level security companies). If you have the 8800 like i do, than stay with it. Why Blackberry ever put a cameara in it? I don't know why, weird...

Picture an 8800 with its tie loosened and a couple buttons undone, and this here is pretty much what you'd get. Hot on the heels of the aforementioned 8800, RIM has officially taken the wraps off its hotly anticipated (and well scooped) 8300 "Curve," a device that takes the standard QWERTY BlackBerry formula and throws in a handful of consumer-friendly features for good measure. Clearly at the top of the list is a 2 megapixel cam with integrated flash -- but other goodies include comprehensive media support (WMA, WMV, and H.263 all make the cut), stereo Bluetooth, a true 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD expansion for when you exhaust (quickly) your 64MB of internal ROM, and a 15.5mm thick shell that's pretty stylish by RIM standards, no 3G but it does support EDGE.

Sorry that was a type-o. The 8800 does not have 3G support but it does have EDGE support.
I am going to up my rating on BlackBerry Curve to a 8. I did just pick one up this weekend (6/23/07) and i do like it, i still have my 8800....

Why would you even post a review of a product you didn't even own at the time? That is a waste of time to read that review only to have you retract it once you actually had the product in hand. Thanks for alarming people for nothing.

If your not going to fully review a device, why bother? Okay, you don't like the fact there is a camera, you can't fault RIM for going after a more consumer based market. If you don't like the phone tell us why. IO understand that the lack of 3g support and wi-fi are disappointing but does that really warrant a 2 rating out of 10? All I'm saying is be objective, but at least explain reasons why so those who haven't bought the device know what to look for. If you are happy witht he 8800 and having a camera is problematic, simply dont purchase the device. Just my opinion.

I'm surprised that if you like the 8800 that you would give the curve a rating of 2 just because it adds a camera and lacks GPS. The 8800 doesn't support 3G either - you'll have to wait for the 8820 for that.

Just because there's a Blackberry device which is (perhaps) more suited to a solely business user, why penalize this device by giving it a poor review?
I own a BB Pearl. I was thinking about getting the 8800, but when I saw the Curve announced, my decision became a no-brainer. Unless I absolutely needed the GPS function, I would opt for the Curve. The combination of the camera (useful on both a business and a personal level), Bluetooth support for multimedia earphones, etc. would make this my choice.
I haven't found a need for fast internet browsing on a Blackberry device. Maybe others do. I am wondering, however, why RIM isn't building WiFi capability into its devices?

I dont think the 8800 comes with the 3g support. if so, I cant find it on my 8800. True, the companies that dont allow camera phones, the 8800 will suffice. However, I think bb was aiming at those users who want a camera and who probably bought the pearl for that very reason.
