"TouchPro 2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 is Awesome!"
Pros: Upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5, Fantastic Keyboard, 800 by 480 resolution screen, Opera Mobile 9.5 pre-installed, GPS, 3G, makes Netbooks obsolete.
Cons: Don't drop it on your toe with a "Body Glove" wrapped around it. Screen is a finger print magnet.
Summary: I get there are folks who don't like Windows Mobile but the folks over at XDA Developers have proven it is not the culprit many think it is. The HTC Europe website has Windows Mobile 6.5 at its support page and XDA now has a HardSPL available. Windows Mobile 6.5 is installed on (T-Mobile) Wing and it is extremely finger friendly and a wonderful experience. The device is big, no doubt, but there are those of us, me included who like the bigger size and with a Body Glove and screen protector, it's quite the device and yes, it is heavy. It will make netbooks obsolete. There aren't many negatives with the device; they are where the microSD card is, it's upside down compared to the Wing and harder to install. You may not have to remove the back to install it, but it is recommended. The T-Mobile website requires a Smart Phone data plan which is $24.99 without unlimited text messaging and $34.99 with it. You may opt to buy a data plan only, it will cost $39.99. I'm told from Customer Service, if you buy the device retail or no contract you may use its $9.99 Web2Go plan which I can verify works with no impairments. If you're like me and you have a grandfathered plan like T-MobileWeb at $5.99 or an older plan that a few folks to this day have which cost $2.99 - it will work on the device, but be forewarn the website is not friendly to those of us with grandfathered data plans. Before anybody e-mails me asking how, remember if you're a T-Mobile, the primary APN is epc.tmobile.com but for Web2Go users it is internet2.voicestream.com and/or wap.voicestream.com. I have used both T-Mobile Web and Web2Go in my TP2 and they work. New users won't be afforded any grandfather plans. It may be to your advantage to buy the device retail at $549.99 and offset the price in ten to eleven months.
Updated on Nov 27, 2009To update to Windows Mobile 6.5 before HTC and T-Mobile officially release it for the device will require the device being Hard-SPL and obtaining a ROM from http://thewingster.com or XDA-Developers.com under "Rhodium". This is not for the faint of heart, but if you follow the instructions it's a process that doesn't take long to do, but please read the instructions before making any attempt to change the operating system.
Since writing my original review T-Mobile has radically changed their plans and while they favor new customers; it does little for those of us who have been with them a long time and have grandfathered plans. Today the internet will cost a customer $24.99 a month; before October 2008; it was $5.99 - T-MobileWeb and before that $2.99 - Unlimited T-Zones. It's no secret the money is in data, not voice, but T-Mobile's 3G while late to the 3G arena is expected to be 7.2 megs down by end of 2010 and up to 21 megs down by end of 2011.
