"Best phone I've ever used! iPhone what?!?"

by BarryNL on November 19, 2007

Pros: Does everything you expect a PDA phone to do and so much more

Cons: Take a little long for GPS to find satalites

Summary: This is my first ever PDA/Smart phone with WM6. The phone it replaces is a Nokia 6230i which was basically just a phone and I used trouble free for over 2 years so I basically had absolutely no need to surf the net or chat on the go, and yet I decided to give one of the most anticipated phones a try.

Now I'll say this, I've been following the progress of the iPhone for a long time and being from the Netherlands, I guess I had the advantage of seeing US customers go through the ups and down before I got my own hands dirty. Perhaps having never even held an iPhone, I may not be qualified to state the following, but from what I've read about the iPhone with locking and obligation this and that and having had the Tytn II for nearly 2 months, all I can say is I KNOW I made the right decision!!!

The querty keyboard feels so great and the sliding mechanism springs really nicely in one hand. The backlighting is also very cool! The phone itself is a nice weight, some of my friends have said it feels slightly heavy, but those were my female friends who all own phones which would blow away in a breeze, and what do you expect on a phone that can do everything?!? I think the phone feels of a high quality weight.

The large touch screen is great! so crisp and clear viewing small text, photos and video is a joy!

One of the things I was worried about was the speed of getting things done on the phone, and though I have no comparison with other PDA/Smart phones, I am used to just pressing a button and viewing my contacts or smss or whatever, and this phone does just that. I had a chance to play with a Nokia N95 before and found it lagging constantly and it got annoying fast. Loading applications, files, whatever, on the Tytn II is quick and doesn't take so much time that its annoying at all!

Speaking of applications, how great it is to be able to customize EVERYTHING about this phone from third party aps, to themes to soft buttons, even ringtones and not pay 1.98 for them!!! I'm running an application called pocketCM which has basically turned my contacts and sms list into an iPhone wanna be! Flick scrolling which slows down, and threaded sms, and, oh yeah, I can customize it to my every desire! It also has a built in application which can recognize handwriting if you have the phone in portrait mode, but I still prefer the full keyboard which is a joy to use, I had to upgrade my sms bundle from my provider because I send more than I used to!

I've browsed the web, chatted on msn live, and do a whole lot of things on this amazing mini super computer and the battery has never gone lower than 40%, power management is fantastic. Having considered the Nokia N95 and reading the battery horror stories, there is no comparison! The phone will easily last days with normal use!

Okay I sould say something about the cons:

The built in GPS does take a few minutes sometimes to connect to satetlites, sometimes up to 5 minutes but those were times when i was indoors, outside, it doesn't even take a minute. TomTom Nav6 is awesome and Google maps is also great.

okay okay, cons: the camera, though it is great quality, seems to have a low frame rate when taking regular pics so getting a sharp picture can be tricky. It has no flash, but doesn't need it because it compensates internally.

um, it takes 10 seconds to boot up when resetting after installing a new application which is HORRIBLY LONG!!!

Naw, this phone rocks, it might seem pricey, but this is what a phone is supposed to be like, and thats coming from someone who never needed half the things this phone can do and now will probalby never be able to live without them... I guess thats a con too ;)
