Verizon's roster of color-screen phones is gradually expanding, and with the arrival of LG's VX4400, customers now have another alternative to Motorola's popular T720. Is the LG a better choice? Well, it's not quite as dashing as the Motorola, but it arguably has a superior user interface, a nicer dial pad, and better battery life. In terms of features, however, the two phones are similar. Resembling LG's earlier flip phones, the silver-and-dark-gray VX4400 isn't ultrasnazzy, but it's attractive. The T720 is arguably sharper-looking, but we really liked the feel of this LG's rubberized dial-pad buttons, which are backlit in blue. Additionally, the Send button is backlit in green and the End button in red--a nice touch. The eight-line, 65,000-color, 120x133-resolution display is also impressive, and like most of today's flip phones, this model features a monochrome external display.

Pocket-friendly: Slightly larger than a pack of gum, the VX4400 is compact.Love it! The rocker key denotes the calendar with a heart icon.
The VX4400 isn't a supercompact model, but it fits easily in your pocket and feels fairly sturdy in the hand. Measuring 3.39 by 1.85 by 0.7 inches, the VX4400 is more compact than the T720 but weighs exactly the same (4 ounces). All in all, we liked the phone's interface and had no complaints about button placement. Everything is where it should be, with the volume and memo-record buttons on the side, while the OK button sits in the middle of the four-way navigational key. The top menu system is icon driven, but each symbol has a numeral assigned to it, so you can simply press a number to get that menu item (for example, 8 is for settings).

Our one gripe is with the charger. Again, LG has chosen to go with an AC adapter and a desktop charger rather than a more compact travel charger that plugs directly into the phone. It's not a major gripe, but it means you have to carry two pieces instead of one when traveling. The phone also comes with a belt-clip holster.

Accessories included: The VX4400 comes with a nifty holster.
The VX4400 doesn't have a built-in speakerphone like Audiovox's CDM-9500, but it does have a fairly solid feature set. You'll find a 199-name phone book, a calendar, a calculator, voice-activated dialing, two-way text messaging, voice notes and tags, caller ID, call logs, e911 compatibility, 26 ring tones, and a vibrating alert.

The VX4400 is 1xRTT compatible, so you can browse the wireless Web at relatively high data rates (in theory, about 56Kbps) using Openwave's browser, which we like because it offers caching technology. Still, don't expect instantaneous connections; performance continues to lag a bit in this area.

Like the Motorola T720 and the Audiovox CDM-9500, this LG is BREW enabled; for a small fee, you can download applications, MIDI ring tones, wallpaper, and games (which will come in handy with the color screen) via Get It Now. We had no problem downloading several games, including JAMDAT's just-released baseball app, which is mildly amusing.

Big and bulky: LG includes the desktop charger.
The tri-mode (CDMA 800/1900, AMPS 800) phone performed well in New York City and San Francisco, cities where Verizon's service is considered quite good. We could hear callers fine, and callers said they couldn't tell we were using a cell phone. If anything, the phone's volume can be almost too loud.

Battery life was also respectable for a color-screen phone. Using the backlight judiciously, we were able to surpass the rated talk time of 3 hours by 30 minutes. We should note this is superior to the T720's numbers (with standard battery installed). LG says you can get up 110 hours of standby time, but we managed to surpass that number by 12 hours.

It's ok to make calls... eventually

Pros: Loud volume

Cons: battery life, loud volume

Review: I got this phone second-hand from a friend. I lost my V265(eh) and Verizon wouldn't do anything for me.

It's got a bright color screen with adjustable backlight, and quite an array of ringtones.

My biggest gripe is that it takes a long time to dial. I've waited up to a minute for it to dial once I've hit send. Sometimes the calls go right throug, sometimes it says "Calling..." for up to a minute, and might never dial.

Those little rubber things to keep the screen from hitting the keys? Yeah it had one when I got it, and that lasted a week.

The battery life was dysmal. A couple days with no calls, and it needed a recharging. It forced me to pick up a huge extended battery.

It's very durable. I've dropped it numerous times, and it's still working without any reduction in effectiveness.

The earpiece volume is crazy. I have to keep it on the lowest setting, and that's about as loud as my V265's highest. Any louder, and it kills my ears. It makes up for the lack of speakerphone!

I like manner mode, since I can reach into my pocket, hold the button down, and feel it vibrating to let me know it's not going to ring. I don't even have to take it out.

Shut off/Restarted without warning

Pros: good sound and screen/icon system

Cons: power on/off problems, battery issues, weak service, odd charger

Review: This phone had a problem staying on while talking on it. It would periodically restart itself - as in shut off and then turn back during a phone call. Sometimes it would even turn off and then not turn back on and even when the power button was pressed it wouldn't turn back on. I had to take out the battery and put it back in to get it to even respond to the power button. Often it would turn off and then almost turn back on - but instead of fully turnign on it would simply flash a purple light on the screen until I finally had to pop out the battery. Pretty terrible. I had to replace this phone after 3 months. And then I had the replacement phone (same model)for a few weeks and this started to happen. The first one I had the battery kept falling out after very little wear. I had never dropped it or done anything and the battery was constantly falling out while in use. I finally had to tape the entire thing together so it coudl function. I've owned many cell phones and this is probably the worst that I've ever owned. It had weak service as well and poor battery life. But if it's free go for it. Also - comes with an awful desktop charger - totally bulky and rare so good luck borrowing a charger at anyone else's house if needed.

Sturdy and dependable

Pros: Can stand up to a ten-year-old-girl

Cons: Weak signal at times

Review: About a year and a half ago I upgraded from this phone to the VX8100 and retired my old 4400. Two weeks ago I took the old workhorse out of retirement (I couldn't believe I still had it around) to replace my 10-year-old's Sanyo phone that she dropped and broke in half. I have had this phone since 2003, it has been dropped, flooded and generally abused and held up well. Heck, I even used it once to request air support when I was in the Marines and couldn't reach HQ on the radio (I'm not making this up). Very sturdy. Get it if you can find it.

Definitely a keeper for me!

Pros: Not too big, not too small

Cons: Could use a larger sub screen.

Review: I've had this phone for over 3 years, and I like the VX4400 because it's simple to use, is just the right size to handle, and I don't need to have all the fancy bells and whistles that newer phones have. I just want a phone to accept and place calls when I need to. The VX4400 has good ear and mouth placements, meaning the distance that the earpiece and mouthpiece are spaced apart is adequate enough where you don't have to wonder if the person you're speaking to can hear you, because you aren't sure if you're speaking directly into the microphone. Until such time that this phone will no longer be compatible with current cell phone systems, it is definitely a keeper to me. The only humbug to this phone is not having a large enough sub screen (outside) to really see the data. And I don't mind the sub screen being on while charging. Makes a great night light.

Excellent phone if your looking for a solid basic phone

Pros: Still using this phone since 2003

Cons: No still pics or video abilities

Review: If you can still get this phone I would highly recommend it only if your looking for a solid phone with no camera/video function.

Sound quality and battery life on this thing is great. I did get the extended battery and I can still go a whole week w/o recharging the unit with nominal chatting.

Hang on to this one!

Pros: Easy to use. Sturdy. Tough.

Cons: I guess this particular "make & model" is no longer made.

Review: I love everything about this phone. It fits my lifestyle perfectly. I'm a single mom with four kids and it keeps me connected at home and when I'm on the go. The only time I can't get a signal is in one particular Wal-Mart. But I don't go their very often anyway, so it's not an issue. Audio is always clear and never cuts out. I can easily text message my fiance. It saves on minutes and I can talk to him anytime, anywhere. The fact that the LCD light stays on when it's charging is no big deal. It gives off a little glow. So what? You plug it in when you go to bed and you never even know it's there. It's not super light but not too heavy. I like a little weight to a phone. I've dropped mine several times and it just takes it. It would take a lot to convince me to change phones. I just don't know what I'm going to do when I DO need to replace it.

solid phone

Pros: simple, easy to use, big screens, good reception, durable

Cons: kinda thick, no speaker phone

Review: This is a pretty good phone for a first time buyer. It has a good size and is good looking. It is very very durable. I probably dropped it 100+ times and it scratched but works fine. My 190 lb friend stepped and slid on it on accidentand the antenna got very scratched up but it still works wonderfully.

This phone has basic features with great service and reliability.

Pros: long lasting, reliable, hard to break, easy to use, nice display, good design

Cons: free ringers are bad, bad quality for ringtones, manner mode button bad,

Review: This phone is good for anyone that is looking for a basic phone. I dropped my phone plenty of times (once in a puddle) and it still worked perfectly. It has minor flaws that people shouldn't dwell on.

Dropped calls & unreliable, done w/ LG

Pros: Silver, nice display, easy to use ergonomics, caller ID on outside of phone

Cons: bulky & heavy, poor reception, dropped calls, reliability

Review: This phone has not been a top performer. After the 12 month warrantee, I moved to an area where it switches from analog to digital, all on the Verizon Network. Drops many calls in less than perfect reception, battery life has been ok, though not like my neighbors LG 510. Now I cannot access any digital features (voicemail, *611, *228 ect) in strong digital reception areas (4-5 bars).

Switches from Verizon digital service to analog on Verizon Extended network when calling in the same spot. Carrier did all tests & determined phone hardware is bad. Bottom line, this POS soured my desire to ever own another LG cellphone.

Just an OK phone =(

Pros: Alarm clock, t9, tip & reg calculator

Cons: no reception in my house =(

Review: The phone is ok, battery is not the best, but my main problem is it does not work in my house. I have noticed that it usually happens when it changes from dig to analog. Sometimes I do get 1 or 2 bars but they immediately disappear when you push send.

Manner mode problem.

Pros: Good call reception and easy to use.

Cons: External manner mode button is bad design.

Review: I have had this phone for almost two years and I miss important calls all the time because this phone goes into manner mode when it is in my pocket. This is because the manner mode button is on the outside of the phone and gets accidently pressed while in my pants pocket. As soon as I can I am getting a new phone due to this design flaw. While this is the only fault that I can find with the phone, it is a major fault that I cannot live with.

Really dislike this phone

Pros: Ease of use with menus

Cons: Battery life, phone goes insane and does strange things

Review: I have Verizon and I have had this phone since June, 2003. I'm about to upgrade my phone because I really hate this one. After about 1 year, the phone started acting crazy. It dials whatever it feels like, even with the phone closed, and it enters it's own phonebook entries under *741. When I'm talking, I hear beeping often, I look at the display and they phone is repeatedly entering these entries on its own. By now the phone is out of warranty and there is nothing I can do. The battery life is horrible. I can literally use this phone for about a half hour each day and then it dies. It restarts by itself, sometimes when you're talking. Just a horrible phone, because of this experience I will never buy another LG. Not even if it's free.

Good thing they stopped making it...

Pros: No longer offered...

Cons: Never registered calls, powered off automatically when charging, poor battery life

Review: I just really hate this phone so I had to review it even though it is no longer offered. I was talked into keeping it, and I have hated it more ever since. I have had the phone and the battery replaced, and it still sucks. The holster I purchased from the carrier kept knocking it into different manner modes, so I stopped using it. I take it off the charger in the morning, listen to my messages for 2-3 minutes, and the farily new battery is down to 1 bar. When I use it, the person on the other end cannot hear me. Occasionally while making a call, the sound goes out so I am waiting for the call to connect when the person I am calling has already picked up and hung up. The sound goes out in the middle of a call. Half my calls are not answered but sent right to voice mail even if the phone has a full signal. Recently, the display went nuts and I had to pop the battery to reset it. There is more, but I'll stop here.
Did I forget to mention that they have the best customer disservice? This is why they make you pay in advance. How lovely.

Solid phone, a little bulky, but has good features, though a camera would help

Pros: Bright lcd, colorful and handy keypad, comfortable to talk on

Cons: Semi-poor battery life, smaller lcd, a little bit bulky

Review: The lg vx4400 for verizon is, in my opinion, and entry level flip phone, that is functional, feature packed, but, still lacks the bells and whistles to make it even better. But, though lacking a camera, or even a color sub-lcd, this phone still has enough features to make it worth while. It has a solid voice recognition system for voice dialing, and a nice, bright display, (though the lcd is a bit small). They keys have a soft texture to them, and are a pleasure to dial. The phone is a bit bulky, but still feels nice in your hand, and even better while talking on it. Its those soft keys...but moving on, it also comes with some handy basic features, like a decent capacity phone book, world clock, and has GPS embedded, for tracking it. All in all, this is a solid flip phone, and would be of use to those who arent worried about the real fancy aspect of a cell phone, and demand mostly function. The loooowww price should also motivate you to scope this buy out.

Pros: with the extended battery, it has a good power life span between charges. has fair signal catch, and good volume on calls

Cons: screen is difficult to see in bright light, as it either darkens too much or fades to a pale shadowy output. has a strong tendency to cut off calls in motion due to tower changes within a given area and almost certainly will disconnect when changing regio

Pros:

Cons:

Review: In his comments, badtimes states "the menu layout does not make much sense (one touch access to uncommon features but not address book". I think that statement tells most of here that he has never even seen the VX400, let alone used one. Anyone that has played with the 4400 for a few minutes knows that you have one-touch access to the phonebook (right soft key)and messages (upper nav button). You also have the ability to customize ANY menu function of your choice into the left nav button (i.e. missed calls, outgoing calls, calculator, scheduler, whatever). This is absolutely the most intuitive interface you could ever want! Come on, badtimes, if you are going to bash the 4400 for personal reasons (work for a competitor?), you need to do better than that.

Superior voice quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just got my VX 4400 in yesterday. The sound quality is very good for both sending and receiving. I called from work and exchanged the landline and the VX 4400 phones with a coworker and we were both very impressed. Both the speaker and ringer volume are too loud even on "low", though. The overall functionality is great, although no games come. If you like the default polyphonic symphony ringers (more than 20), you will probably not ever need to download from the "Get It Now" service. The call quality was great even when the signal strength was somewhat low. It is very easy to use, and the manual is "friendly" but there are typos in it and it could be structured better with an index rather than only a Table of Contents (you can go to the LG US website and download the PDF to see what I mean). I have version 06 of the ROM BIOS and I doubt that those experiencing problems with the phone are upgraded to that level yet. This phone does everything that anyone would "need" a tri-mode phone to do. As for "wants" (like pictures, pre-installed games, or full PDA features), this phone comes up short. However, I have to believe this is one of the best options on the market from my research and definitely the best non-PDA (Kyocera 7135) Verizon offers. Verizon's customer service has been excellent, always ending with "It was our goal to provide excellent service. Have I achieved this for you today?" They've bent over backwards to accomodate me each time. Verizon's phones may be a little behind digital-only phones, but the tri-mode (with analog) assures you can always call from anywhere. Isn't all of this why we buy a cellphone? Official data kit not yet available, though.

NOT SURE YET

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just got it a few days ago so I will be writing my review in a week or so if I decide to keep it (I have 15 days). I just wanted to point out something: People is complaining that the calls go straight to voice mail, the question is, are you playing with the phone at that time? Or are browsing to the Get it Now feature? Because if you are of course your calls are going to go to voice mail, so it says in the manual and if the manual is not that easy to read, Verizon has an easier interactive manual, something like "For Dummies" check it out on their web page. For me, so far so good, I had the A310 but I liked the color screen from the 4400 besides it is sturdier, the A310 was too delicate and I can't handle that, I hate the holster just as I hated the one from the A310 but I bought the body glove and is OK but not sure if I'll keep it, definitely reception was better on the A310. Besides you don't have so much to choose from Verizon they lack variety, hopefully one of these days they'll come up with one of the competitors phones, everybody else have much cooler phones in that aspect Verizon sucks, customer services is good though.

Great Phone! Chose A310 instead!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I compared the 4400 to the Samsung A310 for my first digital phone (upgrading from analog). First the positive. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the interface. It is far superior to the Samsung with colorful screens, intuitive menus, an especially useful tip calculator, and nice wall paper choices. The tactile, spaced keypad is what drew me to this phone. It's the best one Verizon sells. The 4400 has less static so noticeably clearer calls than the A310 although the latter's quality is acceptable. The volume on this phone is incredible and can be finely adjusted. It has a microphone button on the side to voice record and mute the phone. Very nice feature. You can't beat the price! The phone is $99.99 with a $100 rebate or FREE! Unbelievable for a color phone on the market for three months or so. Here's why I ended up buying the Samsung. The 4400 had one bar of reception in my rural neighborhood. This was a deal breaker since I was looking for an improvement over the Samsung's 2 bars. Also signal strength seemed to be much more sensitive or unstable with the 4400 than with the Samsung which gave me a solid reliable signal at home and in high signal areas. The 4400 switched to analog more often, dropped calls at home, sent calls to voice mail without ringing the phone, and automatically powered off at will. I agree with other reviewers that the manual is useless. The phone should have shipped with a travel charger instead of a desktop charger and if you want to get picky I didn't like the minuscule signal bars. Battery life was fine for me but noticeably shorter than the A310 which is to be expected for a color vs. monochrome phone. And finally, the Samsung was just a slimmer, more beautiful phone. It was tough to say goodbye to the great interface but functionality wasn't up Samsung's par.

Manual and battery life are awful

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The screen works well and is clear, the reception for me is good, the only places it wont wotk for me are underground parking garages abd some elevators, though I live and work within 5 miles of Qualcomm's hq. Focusing on the negatives, since there are far fewer of those, the battery life falls far short of the manufacturer's 3 hour digital talk spec, I'm usually at 0 or 1 battery bars within an hour of talk. The manual is horrifying, it doesn't mention how to do a 3 way call at all as an example. I love the phone directory setup. Like others have posted, friends of mine have been shcoked when I tell em I am on a mobile, they say it is much clearer.

what the...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Let me first say that this phone frustrates me. The features are great, the color screen is clear, and the overall look of the phone beats anything else offered by Verizon. However, the battery life is terrible and I've had problems with the phone powering on and off on its own. I've owned this phone for about 12 days and I'm not sure what to do. I do have problems that other users mentioned, such as the signal constantly switching from 1x to A, lots of calls going straight to voice mail even when I'm supposed to have full reception, extremely low battery life, slight echo when talking, and the powering down issue. But, the features are great (like the alarm)...I want to say that this is a great phone...except for the low battery life, software glitches, and reception. Somehow I think I like this phone for all the wrong reasons...and the fact that Verizon's other phones seem outdated. Can someone tell me if I just got a phone from a defective batch...or have you experienced similar issues. I gave LG a call, and they do not admit to any knowledge of these problems. I also must say that it is hard to notice the powering down of the phone, especially if you leave your phone on vibrate. I just want to know why these things happen...so I can decide if I should keep this phone or get something else.

Not getting my calls, poor reception

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am very disappointed so far in my LG VX4400(verizon). It worked fine for the first couple days and then I noticed I wasn't getting some of my calls, they were going directly to my voice mail and then at times it would ring once and then go directly to my voice mailbox and a day ago we had a cloud cover with light rain most of the day and I had no signal from digital at all, at times it went into no service and then at times it went to analog, it just kept bouncing back and forth to these three settings all the day. When I received, finally, two of my calls on that day the phone would give a couple quick beep beeps and then I would be disconnected from my calls. I have always used verizon phones before, my last being a CDM-9000 Audiovax which works great but I wanted to update and this new little phone had a lot of neat features and fun things and I was really looking forward to enjoying it. At this time I am undecided as to get another LG VX4400 or go with a Motorola T720 but much of their reviews sound about like the problems I'm having with mine. I am about ready to just send it back and reinstate my old phone, it wasn't fancy but it sure worked like a charm and was always reliable even during cloud cover with rains.

Review: I had been looking into Verizon for some time, especially after seeing the VX4400 in action. The display is bright, crisp, and far superior to any color screen phone I have seen to date. The keypad is well laid out and very bright, which is a benefit if you have to use the phone in low-light situations (and I seriously dig the blue color keys). Reception has never been a problem, unlike my last phone, a Nokia 7160 which I had through Cingular. I agree with the other postings that the manual needs a serious overhaul. I can't complain about the fact that it doesn't come with games or such, since it's really not a shortcoming of the phone, but the provider. Besides, who needs a cell phone with games? Do people really get that bored? The frong LCD is large and very easy to read, but it doesn't show the whole number when the incoming call is a member in your phonebook. Not a huge deal, but I just prefer to see the whole number. I would have to say that this is the most fun, useful, and versatile phone I have ever used (and I've owned ALOT of phones). I'll be definitely waiting to see what other gems LG will come out with!

One of the best phones i have ever seen and used

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have never heard ot the VX4400 until i was looking at the verizon wireless website and that was the only phone that was there that i was looking for. There are so many features and options on this phone, and with Get It Now you can do a lot of things. I recommend this phone to anyone, in my opinion it is one of the best.

Great Phone, a few glitches, manual needs improvement

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the best Verizon Phone I've had to date. I've had a StarTac 7868, a Motorola V120c and a Nokia 3285. Until I purchased the VX-4400, the Nokia was my favorite. This phone has great battery life, considering it is a color phone. There are a few things LG needs to work on ... The vibrate feature is not strong enough. Also, to use the vibrate then ring feature, you need to set the ring volume to its maximum. The manual clearly needs improvement. My only other complaint is that closing the flip cover often does not terminate my call. My local Verizon store replaced my phone with a brand new one and it does the same thing. It is a very minor complaint, as one can press the End button to terminate the call. LG should also ship the phone w/a travel charger, rather than the desktop charger stand. Other than that, it is an incredible phone with terrific sound quailty.

The Best Verizon Has

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had this phone for about a week, before I left Verizon, and I have to say that if you're going to go with Verizon this is the phone. The color display is excellent and it has a lot of features. There are a few quirks I was puzzled over like no way to refresh a web page in the browser without going back a page and reloading it. Otherwise I'd recommend it if you have to go with Verizon, all I can say is this definitely not a Nokia.

Reception killed the phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: We have heard enough good things. However, as we can see, every problem in this user comment is about the reception. Dont blame on Verizon, it is the phone that has far worse reception than others on the market. First, the phone will keep switching on and off when it does not recieve any signals where any other phone does. Second,I could not recieve half of my calls in my room (dont argue about it, because I have tested it with my friends, all of their phone can recieve every calls, except that only me can not recieve half of them when display shows more than 5 bars). That's not all of it, the analog also goes on by itself frequently. I live in New York area, if you looking for a phone for great reception, reconsider about vx4400, because the reception killed it.

Cons:

Pros:

Cons:

Awesome!!! Service too!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I read most of the comments here. I wanted a phone that is functional (communication), not a toy. I have a hard time understanding why people need/want a game play or music feature on a friggin cell phone. Playing a game on a inch screen is not my idea of game play. But that is for another forum/chat group. Back to the phone review. Decided to return my Sammy a310 and get the LG 4400. While I waited in line at customer service, I saw three different people return their 720s with major complaints (mostly software related). I must admit that my son has a 720 with no complaints. I had to wait over a week to get the 4400 as they were on back order here in Ohio. Ya want service...the sales rep told me she would call as soon as a shipment came in. I got a call Thursday AM that 20 came in. I rushed up to the center and was one of the first there. The very friendly rep had one set aside for me. In my book, that's service. All 20 were gone by Noon. If this was a bad phone, why is it so hard to get one. Product demand speak louder than any review. In one short weekend, I have come to love the 4400. Excellent reception and very easy to dial. My big fat thumbs have no problem hitting the proper buttons when I dialed. I agree with the friggin manual...WEAK! But I was up and running before I left the parking lot of the Verizon Center and I am not a cell phone guru. I have had Nextel (I do miss the walkie-talkie feature), AT&T, Cellular One and none of these compare to Verizon's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Don't hesitate to go with Verizon and get this phone...if you can get one!!!

Best Verizon Cell Phone Available

Pros:

Cons:

Review: CNET must get kick backs from Motorola to push the T720 ratings. My friend has it and we both hate it. She wants my phone. Hands off! Everything is great about the phone with the exception of the manual. Oh well, play with it enough and, you too will love the phone. Too bad Verizon doesn't have the SprintPCS and VoiceStream features but hey, when you need to make a call in the NJ/NYC area, IT WORKS! Isn't that why you're buying a cell phone? I still would have loved those extra bells and whistles that the others offer. I'm a HEAVY CELL PHONE USER so, I can honestly say the service is awesome in these areas oh, and South Beach (Miami, FL). The Motorola T720 is flimsy and, weird when holding it against your ear. How can CNET give it the same rating? I don't get it! ATTENTION VERIZON, get the bells and whistles going already!!! I've used SprintPCS, AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon is number one in comparison! If you don't believe me, try to understand how they justify their pricing plan compared to the others. I go hiking and bouldering deep into the woods in NY State and in NJ. Guess what? It still works! That's service! I know, I shouldn't climb while on the cell. I know. Hey, you drive while on the phone! The others try to sell "the features" to you. I wish I had some of those features. Oh well, the next phone will have them. ;) CNET folks, please try to give fair ratings! People will lose trust if you continue to play favorites!!! I trusted CNET quite a bit, now, I just don't know!

Glitches

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am one of the first people to buy this phone. I have had it replaced three times. The last time was yesterday. They had intial software problems; told me to take it in and replace. Next phone had the same problem everyone else is noticing. Powers done and back on by itself whenever it wants. Display started to flicker, then within days started dropping calls 6 to 10 times per call with 4 out of 5 bars present. Verison customer service ws great and told me to take it back in and replace it. But they are on back order from the factory for 4 to 5 weeks. I recieved a refurbished phone; which I am not to happy about. Seems verizon sold out of the popular phone very quickly, then throw in the glitches and you have a distaster if you want to replace it! I truely love the phone...when it WORKS!! I have had my phone since Feb 14, 2003. It was love at first sight but the relationship is starting to get old!!! ha ha If they can fix the problems great, but if not go with a proven phone. I will never buy a new release again!

Nice Phone, Bad Holster

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my first color screen phone, and at the moment I am not unhappy except for one critical issue: The original holster. The holster totally surrounds the phone so you cannot open the cover with it in the holster. A problem for me, when I drive, I mount the phone on a dash clip, using a headset with my old phone I could easily answer a call, I am unable to do so with this phone. At the moment, I am looking for a holster that can swivel and have the ability to clip on the dash. Otherwise, at this point - - I have no problems with the phone. I was considering the Motorola T720, but after reviewing the comments here, I'll stick with the LG.

Amazing Phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I held out on buying a cell phone for a long time because nothing impressed me and then I saw this one and decided to go for it. I am VERY happy with my decision. Verizon has wonderful service in my area; this phone is rarely below 3 bars in 1x (digital) mode. Its features are amazing and the screen is bright and crisp. I'm very surprised with the battery life considering how powerful this little phone is. It can go a good four days on one charge! The included ringers are lame but plenty loud. The only thing that disappoints me is that the caller ID LCD does not light up in a different color for callers from different groups. I had heard it could do this, but as far as I know, it can't. I learned most the features on my own and with trial and error since the manual wasn't the greatest. It is sufficient however. The phone is great though. The best cellular phone on the nation's best network.

What's up with this?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's a little fishy that the first two reviews I read start with the exact same sentences: "I recently purchased the LG VX4400 and was at first skeptical since I had never heard of LG before. After a few minutes of use I realized it works great and has a ton of useful features. The reception is great and the color screen is really clear and pleasant to use." These were written by two different people over two months apart. What do you want to bet the reviewer(s) work for LG.

Really like it, but wish battery lasted longer

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Pros: I like the screen and the UI in general, but wish I could turn off animation for shutdown. Shutdown seems to take forever. Cons: the battery life, while reasonable, should be longer. Also, it seems to take a really long button push (at least 3 s) to power up or down. As long as I'm wishin', might as well mention I wish the holster could rotate 90 deg.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently purchased the LG VX4400 and was at first skeptical since I had never heard of LG before. After a few minutes of use I realized it works great and has a ton of useful features. The reception is great and the color screen is really clear and pleasant to use.The other color flip phones currently available have pretty limited battery usage time, but my LG has delivered on its promise of three hour talk time and five days of available power in standby mode. I'm pleased with my VX4400 and can readily recommend this phone. It's hard for me to recognize the few issues lodged as complaints here at CNET, because my experience seems in line with the 93-94 percent of users who have been wholly impressed. Performance in the hard to get service places(mountains,waterfronts...). And if you are in the Stamford, CT area no better place to buy than WIRELESS ONE COMM. on 19a high ridge road. they great sales people specially Sid Dash who helped me out with so many various questions and features, i was more than satisfied. 4400 vs 720

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Get the 4400! I was in the market some time ago trying to decide which phone to get... am glad i got the 4400! its very easy to use.., has quick menu response, beautiful 64k color screen (as opposed to the 256 of 720) , its polyphonic, the battery is really awesome, i play games and make phones continuously and yet when i go home in the end, i have three bars out of 4 left. Signal is great and the voice recognition dialing is amazing! i had the Sony Ericson T68i (with T-mobile) before this, that phone had a crappy voice recognition compared to this one. I could go on about the easy to press big buttons, the fact that i dropped my phone a couple of times and that it still worked etc... but obviously, people are busy.. and have other things to do !

By Far the best phone I have ever used

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had the LG TM510 for a year and a half before I upgraded to the VX4400. It was love at first sight. I am a technology nut, and this phone has everything I want in a phone. It has a sleek sexy screen, big buttons, a loud ringer, and great user interface. I too have to agree with the fact that the user manual sucks dookie. I looked at other color phones, and nothing even compared in my opinion. I did NOT like the T720 from Motorola, so for me, the VX4400 was the only option that had everything I wanted. My one complaint is that I can't answer the phone when I am using the handsfree kit and it is in it's holster. Oh well, a small price to pay.

A great looking phone with functionality to match!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The LG VX4400 is not only an attractive phone with impressive color LCD display, it performs the tasks any user would ask of a cell phone flawlessly, in my experience. The reception is very strong throughout the Denver metro and Rocky Mountain front range regions. I've even taken the phone with me skiing and on a couple of hikes, and the signal strength is outstanding. I have yet to experience a dropped call in more than a months use. That contrasts sharply with a couple of other phones I have used, and Verizon seems to deliver on its promise of the best available coverage area around these parts. The other color flip phones currently available have pretty limited battery usage time, but my LG has delivered on its promise of three hour talk time and five days of available power in standby mode. It's easily the best in class of the current color phones. Volume tends to be rather loud, but the range of settings allows most users to adjust performance to something they should like. I'd certainly prefer any phone I own to fall on the high side and adjust accordingly, rather than not have the capability to be heard at the earpiece or ringer. The manual is not very helpful, but the phone itself is user friendly and most functions can be figured out simply by following the menu choices. I'm pleased with my VX4400 and can readily recommend this phone. It's hard for me to recognize the few issues lodged as complaints here at CNET, because my experience seems in line with the 93-94 percent of users who have been wholly impressed. Performance in the central Rocky Mountains is great!

Best fone in Verizon's lot

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've upgraded from a kryocera 2135 (which I liked) to the 4400. I decided on the 4400 instead of the T720 as my girlfriend has it. She's on her 2nd one and getting ready to take it back and get the 4400. I like some of the features of it but the 4400 blows it away in every aspect, quality, features, looks, feel. It has plenty of ringtones to pick from and games you can get to keep from getting bored in the waiting room or in a traffic jam. 2 things I really don't like about the 4400 one is the loudness of the ringers. They don't go low enough. I want to be notified of an incoming call, I don't want the whole town to know it too. The other is the charger. My 2135 plugged right into the bottom, this has to 'lay' in the cradle which is kinda hard to get it into. Getting it out is not a problem at all. Although the light stays on while charging, it does make a handy nite lite. The display is crisp and clear and the buttons have a nice feel to them and well spaced. The book tells you what it has and where it's at but not how to use it, so the learning curve is sorta high. Call clarity is good with the occasional dropped call. No phone is perfect, But over all it's the best one that Verizon has to offer.

Fine Phone/Lousy Manual

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After my experience with the VX10, the VX400 was a welcome relief. LOUD ringer, so a lot less missed calls, strong signal, easy-to-learn software, nice graphic interface. My only complaint is that the user manual is essentially useless, since it is so badly written (or should that be "translated") that many of the excellent features (voice dialing for instance) are not obvious at first glance, and I only found them through a process of trial and error. My message to LG: find some good tech writers to match your excellent engineers!

Poor Voice quality in SF Bay Area

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I too live in the San Francisco Bay area (San Jose)and experiencing poor voice quality. The features are great but they don't mean anything if I can't understand the person on the other end. I exchanged the VX4400 and still had the same trouble. I compared phone calls with my Cingular Nokia 3590. The Nokia sounded natural and clean. The LG sounded garbled and compressed. I read on another internet site that changing "Voice Privacy" feature from enhanced to standard (enhanced is the standard) improves voice quality. I will try this...if not I will have to move on to another phone....too bad I love the features.

Since then, I have yet to make a single phone call on the LG because of non-existent signal reception. Cons:

ALTOGETHER NOT HAPPY WITH MOTOROLA. BUT THIS PHONE DOES WHAT LG CLAIMS IT WILL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PHONE TO ANYONE WHO LIKES ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES. WISH IT HAD A CAMERA BUILT IN.. BUT MAYBE VERIZON WILL HAVE UPGRADES IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

Beats the T720

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had a Moto T720 for a few months and loved the feature set but didn't like the a) bugs, b) screen - it was big, but washed-out and it flickered and "ghosted" a lot especially with colors, c) it was flimsy and 'creaks', d) it got dust in the screen, e) it was not -nearly- as loud as it needed to be. The VX4400 corrected -all- these problems, and improves on them. The sub-LCD is wonderful, the main LCD is a bit smaller than the T720's, but because of interface differences has the same amount of usuable area as the T720's and is MUCH cleaner and sharper and seems to have more colors, the volume is clear and top-notch, etc. Battery life with the std. battery seems better too. I haven't had too much time with this phone, but it seems like another LG winner!

Everything but voice quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've read the reviews, everyone seems to praise this phone, and, at first glance I'd agree. Actually, at second glance it still looks good: clear menus and navigation, good key layout, excellent screen readability, nice form factor, BUT...I find it very hard to hear others. I'm getting very strong signal strength of 5 to 6 bars on the 1X network but the voice quality is lacking. The voice on the other end seems to intermittently cut out at the beginning of a phrase and it lacks detail. It’s like the high end frequencies were cut off and it’s somewhat muddy. I made a call to the same number with my much older Nokia 6160 (AT&T wireless network) and the quality was night and day better. I’m getting the same clarity problems on my second vx4400. Has anyone else in the Bay Area experienced this? It’s surprising that so few people are having the same experience. I’m at the end of my 15 days, so I’ll return the phone and try another.

The sound is good and strong and others tell me the phone doesn't sound like a cell phone on the other end of my calls. The color display is bright and clear offering a very nice visual display. The choice of collors on the outer sub LCD is a nice touch. The keys are a bit larger than those on competitors flip phones and the lighting behind the keys is both attractive and helpful. Haven't used the voice activated dial set up myself, but my wife has programmed several in on her phone. Learning how to program the various functions is a challenge because of limited direction from the manual. It describes the available functions reasonably well but is short on information that is sometimes needed to get the features to perform the way a user might want. These 4400's are great phones, overall. Maybe with future phones LG will recognize the consistent theme here that the manual leaves a great deal to be desired.

Awesome Phone!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this phone about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago and haven't had one problem. The only i found that i needed help on was a change on the setting. The phone can be put on manner mode, silent all, or normal mode. Somehow my phone got on manner mode and everytime a call came in it would vibrate instead of ring. To change it back to normal mode u press the star key for 4 seconds. Keep on doing this until it says its on normal mode. The phone is the best i have ever seen. The reception is really good. One thing i have to say to the people who were saying that the reception is horrible: Its not a problem with the phone or with verizon itself. The reason the reception is poor is that you are in an area where you don't get good reception. Although almost everysingle place in the country gets pretty good if not amazing reception. Having a color phone is awesome! This phone has everything you could possibly want and the menu options are very easy to use and pretty self explanatory. There are just two minor setbacks which shouldn't have an affect on whether you buy the LG VX4400 or not. First thing is that the manual doesn't really cover alot. This didn't have any real affect on me because if u just spend time looking at the features on the phone you will pretty much figure out how to do everything. The other thing is that Get It Now doesn't have a whole lot of game options or programs to get ring tones from. But the programs it does have to get ringtones from have alot of really good ringtones. I rate this phone an overall ten and after having this phone for almost three weeks I have found no techinical errors at all or any problems with reception. One more thing when people right about certain things happening to their phone like for example someone said that it has a week front LCD screen well to be honest what happened was probably a result of mistreatment to the phone and the accident shouldn't be blamed on the phone. The phone is not big and bulky at all. I would most reccomend this phone for teenagers or young adults. If you are looking for a business phone you might want to find something that wouldn't have as many features considering you wouldn't really need all the features that this phone has but would still work 100% as a business phone. When it comes to the Motorola T720 I would rate them the same because no matter what anyone says they are both one of the highest quality phones out there, or else verizon wouldn't have had them out on the market. I think that both phones work great (having past experiences with the T720) but I like the keys on the LG VX4400 along with the menu options better than on the T720. For backrounds on the 4400 you have a choice of a beach, hot air balloons, a soccer player image, a basketball player image, a bird, a sunflower, a puppy, or a house in the snow on a mountain. Its not a huge selection but it definately beets not having a backround at all. Another thing I tried an earpiece on this phone and yes it does work. This phone has amazing features that not even some computers even have. I always have maximum signal strength where I live In New Jersey. Overall i highly reccomend this phone to anyone of any age.

Thumbs Up !

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently traded my Motorola T720 for the VX4400 due to the poor quality of the T720. The VX4400 is a true quality phone. Its study, durable, and has enough fine qualities and features that a phone should have. Im a flight attendant and have the opportunity to utilize this phone in most of the USA. I have to say the reception has been excellent. Battery Life is better than the T720. Im able to use it for 3 days w/o a charge. To may phones are coming out these days with enough features that go beyond the normal cellular phone. I just wanted a phone that is of quality, that has great reception, that has good battey life and last but not least... is just a cellular phone ! This is the one !

Good phone, poor manual

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Good luck intuiting your way through the on-screen menus. The menus themselves are pretty clear, but come across a less-than-obvious choice (e.g., for the GPS feature: location only or E911) and it's a guess. The manual does not explain what the features are, just how to toggle between the choices. No troubleshooting section either.

Where's the Manual

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have been a Verizon customer for a long while. Recently upgraded to the LG VX4400. I am one of the few who actually read the manual before playing with the new toy. I found the manual might as well be tossed, because it lacks. My other complaints regard only using Verizon for the down loads and then the additional monthly service charges assosciated to the downloads. Why should I pay $2.99 a month for a game for my phone? I have yet to search the other applications offered. Overall, I am happy and recommend the phone.

My Thoughts on the LG 4400...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This phone is a really great phone, all the reviews are correct. I get a great signal and can hear people just fine. The keypad is layed out very nice, blue background for numeric keys, green send button, and a PURPLE end button, people keep saying the end button is RED, its not, its PURPLE! Im having a rough time finding a data cable for the phone and software for the phone, entering 200 numbers and emails is a bit time consuming doing it without a PC. The ringers are very loud but they have far to many "songs". Most of those songs are from my grandparents days. If you download tones from Get it now be prepared to pay for each of them and they are not very loud. Almost every tone I download you can hardly hear it, i mean you can hear it but its not nearly as loud as the standard ringers that come with the phone. Why is this, I would like to know, this same problem was also on the T720 which I previsouly owned. The phonebook is nice and fast and easy to use, the T720's phonebook took forever to load and come up on the screen, felt like I was waiting for a program to load on a computer whenever I selected the T720's phonebook function. I dont really like the desktop charger for the 4400, its clunky and hard to get seated correctly but thats just me. All in all its a really nice phone and its small enough to wear on my belt and sit down at the same time without the phone or antenna stabbing me in the side. The user manual is a complete joke, if you want to know what a function is you better look elsewhere, buy the phone and look in the manual, youll see what im talking about. All in all I love the 4400 though, crystal clear reception, very easy to use and very sharp looking and small all at a very reasonable price. I would HIGHLY recommend this phone to anyone who is considering buying a new phone or upgrading there old T720 unit.

Great Flippin Phone !!! Party in your Pants ! This phone gets you laid!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Man, oh man. I have been looking at phones for a long time. I had a startec & Timport. Great solid phones. I was too looking at T720 (too complicated/pricey and fragile), Audiovox CM9500 (too bulky and complicated buttons, people at verizon couldn't figure it out) and other color screens. I had the Vi60 phone with AT&T and cancelled that phone dropin service quick. Vi60 is sleek, but thats it. The features are not good for what you pay. The vi60 is $50-$150 and you can get color with much more features now for same or less. What I like best about the LGVX4400, is that you can change the color schemes. Yea, you can have certain colors for certain types of folks. Green for work, Blue Friends, Red dates from hell etc. It is simple to use, only one thumb needed, great size text so you don't have to squint (especially if your driving) great high res color screen, and all the features of the "other phones". You can play music, datebook that can be updated from your computer, moving background screen and clear menu options. The battery charger is especial nice. It holds it upright and secure so you don't have to worry about loose connections not charging your phone. buttons light up with any color of your choice (I have blue). It is like a party in your pants !

Good phone if you can get a signal

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have the trouble that many others are having with the phone automatically switching from 1x to A to extended area. Verizon claims that it is the phone because they are massed produced or that they are working on the towers. The options and the features on the phone are wonderful and I enjoy using the phone when it actually works.

great phone, with solid battery life...blows away T720

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This phone is unbelievably great. I had the Motorola T720 for 3 months, and to say the least I hated every moment of having that horrible phone. Finally I did a lot of research, and learned about the VX4400. I have had it for a week and thus far I am very pleased. It has a solid battery life, an amazing menu system, it is very solid, quick, and intiutive. I recommend this phone to anyone who wants a great phone. My only problem with the phone is that you can't use the headphone while it is in the desktop charger...although a rubber band can do the job (just make sure the metal points on the back of the phone touch that of the charger and rubber band it tightly). Buy this phone...very worth it.

Buy it NOW! Its the BEST!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was a sprint customer stuck with a 2 year contract that just got over. I was VERY unsatisfied with their service.. lot of call drops. The phone didnt even work/ring in my room, and I had to go outside my apt complex on the road to make, receive calls!!! So, I did a lot of research to select the right provider this time and was amazed to learn that Verizon was #1 in America. I use to think sprint were unbeatable. Cingular was very tempting with their rollover minutes and cool phones but I've heard really bad reviews about their coverage. So I decided to go with Verizon, and research on the different phones. After reading a lot of web reviews and input from people who own different brand phones (Nokia and Moto were on top of my list) I decided on this one. Am I GLAD to get it!!!! This phone puts the rest of them to shame. "Amazing". At first I was hesitant to get a color phone, and just wanted a simple phone that works everywhere, but for $100 (with the mail/trade in rebate) and no activation on a 2 year it doesnt get any better. And the best part is you can download your own ringtones and wallpaper and customize it the way YOU want it with ease!! I'd say DEFINITELY GO FOR IT!

This is THE phone!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had all kinds of phones, from Motorola, Nextel, Nokia....you name it. The LG VX4400 Beats the pants off all of them. Great size terrific features. Color is neat and I do like the LCD backlight being able to be changed. Not sure why people are complaining about the LCD not turning off in the charger. The only think I would wish for is that ringtones and downloads were not isolated to the "Get it Now" network that Verizon has come up with. All in all the best phone going. I bought two (1 for me and one for the wife).

I like this phone, I really do!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had a Motorola Startac and loved it, but ran short of phone number entries and I wanted color. I bought the Motorola 720 and had it for 3 days and hated it and returned it. Now, I bought LG's, VX4400 (who is LG anyhow?) The phone, I really like (so far). The battery life is so much better then the 720 and it is faster to get around on too. The menues pop up quick as well. There are a lot of plus features. It is hard to see the main menue while in the car and if it's sunny out. I wish they had conventional ringers as well. If you DL additional ringers, then all they are, are some sort of musicial tunes or themes etc. Save your money. Find a ringer you like and stick to it. I wish the front display would not continue to stay lit after the battery finishes charging in it's cradle. It would also be nice to have the volume buttons a little more pronounced so you can feel them while trying to adjust the sound. Overall, I like the phone and would highly recommend. I took my Startac into an area with minimal signal strength as well as the VX. The StarTac showed 2 bars and the VX4400 showed 1 bar. The VX still had crystal clear sound. The large fonts are nice while dialing, but the icons on the front are very small. Still, I would recommend this phone. I am not sure what the antenna is made out of, but it looks very fragile while open. I would assume that it is plastic reinforced wire or something. The antenna is well protected while closed though. It's not like the flimsy StarTac antenna. The colors on the keypad are cool too. Hey, until something else comes along, this phone is a winner!

Great Phone! Just One Thing...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The phone does everything that I want it to do except for one thing. For some reason, the phone powers down and then powers back up by itself repeatedly. The strange thing about this problem is that it only occurs when I'm at work. For example, this morning it happened 4 times in 20 minutes. Now the phone still works great but this unannounced feature has become very annoying. I have called my Verizon contact and they want me to bring the phone in to have it replaced. According to him, he has not seen this problem yet but I have already read one post here on this site regarding this matter. I love this phone and hope that I don't have to go with the Motorola T720 because its construction doesn't feel as solid as the LG and its menus are not as friendly, IMHO. Well, we'll have to see how the replacement works. Wish me luck...

Better than M T720

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had a Motorola T720 for 5 months. I always had problems hearing the other person and found it's display hard to see. After I found out that Motorola KNOWS that it has insufficent volume and doesn't have a fix, I got Verizon to switch me to the VX4400. WHAT A GREAT PHONE! It is a little bigger than the T720, but has much better battery life, a great screen, and I had to turn the sound down to the middle position because it was so loud! I can hear the other person clearly now, get the same or better reception, and am very happy. By the way, the buttons are easier to use than the T720. Only complaint on the VX4400 is the position of the headset jack on the side of the unit . . . kind of a stupid place for it. I will never go back to Motorola! I have always used their cell products since the 1980's. When I complained to them about the T720, they said "that's the way it is and we aren't going to fix it".

Slick fone. Long batt for color

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had this fone for about a month. The reception is excellent. There is very occasionaly static, which amount cell service not the fone. It does not have voice act dial, otherwise all features are nice and easy to access. The menu does not get overwhelming, pretty straight forward. The battery life is as long as my LG-VX10 was (and the 4400 is color!!) Truly i dont see how you could think the moto T720 is "slick" fone, as if you ever held one you would think ugly, plus the button layout on the 720 stinks, while the 4400 is userfrindly and is easy to press/use. Reg a prior remark. This fone is a 1x ready fone, Which means you can connect to Verizon's Express network. The software will make a "A" "D" or "1x" display on the screen. The 1x is a slightly different type of ditial service and it is not available in all areas, yet. SO... this fone will display "A" for analog "D" for digital (not express network) and "1X" for digital and express network

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was considering many options when looking for my 1st color cell phone. After reading all the user reviews on LCD phones, I decided to go with the LG VX4400, as it had by far the highest user rating. I was glad I went with that choice. I must say this phone is a beauty, with all its neat features and colored backlights. And Verizion's reception in my area is second to none. I get only one bar at my apt, but sound is crystal. I highly recommend this phone to anyone looking get a new LCD phone.

I compared, I tested, I liked.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I also had the StarTac before I purchased this phone. I consider myself to be both a hard sell and a skeptic on alot of Verizon products. Personally, I feel that alot of their phones do, in a word, SUCK. That being said, I was determined not to be cornered into purchasing another one of their SUCKY products. I did my research and I found my choices to be narrowed down to the LG VX4400 and the Motorola T720. I admit I really wanted to have the T720 because I seem to have a bias towards having Motorola products and I did initially feel that the T720 was "slick". Sorry, I couldn't pull the trigger on making that purchase of the T720 just for the sake of the namebrand. As far as I am concerned it all comes down to the product and I am a keeper of goods for the long haul. If something satisfies my need for quality, reliabilty and functionality then that is ALL that I need to make me a true believer. Verdict: I like the VX4400 for all the reasons I deem necessary. It sounds clear, it feels sturdy and it has alot of nice functions. Try it out and I feel that you too will be convinced.

GOOD NOT GREAT...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a cell phone junkie. No one calls me,but none the less, I am a technical guru. This phone is good. As indicated by others, the ringer sucks. I'm not gay, not that their is anything wrong with that, but I don't want show tunes. I want a decent loud classic ringer you can hear on a crowed street. yes thee is vibrate, but a lot of times when I'm walking I miss it. I had a old motorola star tac, I could hear that at a concert. Please-no songs, classic ringers. The other thing is the sales people at the verizon phone center. They suck. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN THEIR. Cold and callous, and they don't offer any additional awnsers. H E L P, anyone ever hear of assistance. The owners manuel explains briefly what each thing does, but that's it. We need some help. But I like the phone. And I have figured out alot of the interworkings of the phone and I recomended it BYE

What an impressive color screen flip phone!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Almost three weeks into my ownership of the VX4400, it impresses me more and more as I continue to learn about its varied features and capabilities. The color display is bright and vibrant, so anyone looking for visual impact is likely to be satisfied with this unit. The reception has been great for me, and while I can empathize with a couple of users who claimed to have trouble in this area, the south-central Rocky Mountains and Denver areas which are so tough for other phones (and carriers) have not produced any difficulty for this little LG. My only related experience to the comments about reception problems came during our recent three foot snow - termed the storm of the century here - where I noticed a fading of volume on my reception and analog only coverage where I normally get solid digital service. Since almost nothing else around here worked altogether right during that timeframe, I'll offer a vote of confidence for this phone, because it's been GREAT throughout the rest of the time I've used it. Frankly, I felt a measure of comfort that Verizon service and my VX4400 were performing while tens of thousands of others in this area were without electricity and basic services for days. Volume, as you may have read in other reviews, is strong on both transmitting and receiving, and I've been told by several family members and friends that they couldn't tell at all that I was calling from a cell phone. There is a learning curve for really putting the available features to use, and you need to figure it out mostly through the menus on your own, or with Verizon customer support. Yes, I agree with the comments that have identified the manual as lacking in helpful information and much of any real guidance. This is a phone I would heartily recommend to both family and friends, and I guess now, through Cnet, to a few folks I don't know at all. Those who have not only heard me on the VX4400 but have seen the unit, as well, seem just as impressed as am I. If technology continues to improve, as it has on such a consistent basis, I'm both curious and excited about what might come next. This unit is GREAT! Count me another LG fan.

RECEPTION PROBLEMS IN OTHERWISE GREAT PHONE

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Prior to this phone I had an analog Motorola StarTac 3000 that I turned in because it gave me too many dropped calls in this new digital age. I've had the LG 4400 phone for 11 days & I had immediate reception problems including LOUD static, choppiness, fading volume. Other times, it's very clear. However, the reception problems have occurred frequently enough in various geographries for me to wonder how well the phone is able to hold a signal. BY comparison, the Star Tac performed better in the same areas than the LG has. In fact, at home, I had no problem with the Star Tac, but I can't get the LG to perform (receive well) consistently. areas I tried *228 & no matter. At Verizon tech support, I was advised that I was probably using it in areas with a poor digital signal. That may be true, but when I experimented with forcing calls in analog mode, that didn't really improve the LG's performance although the signal strengths in my display appeared greater in analog than in digital mode. Like another user I saw here, I also experience constant service area changes & fluctution between modes even when sitting at my desk at work (from D to A to 1X). I'm very disappointed because I love the phone's interface & features. I WANT it to work & I'm irritated that other users don't have this problem & more so that Verizon & LG Electronics has no answers. I also don't think any of the other Verizon phones compare with the LG in other respects. But, what good is a cell phone with unreliable reception? I expect to reluctantly return the phone under Verizon's 15 day guarantee period. (To the user whose phone was stuck in digital, I was told by Verizon that the phone would seek to default to digital even if it had the weakest signal. Check your settings (Press Menu, 8, 3, then 1. I was told the setting should be Automatic B for Sacramento, CA area. Also, you can force modes by hitting Menu, 0. Then enter 000000 as service code. You can then select 3 or 4 to force individual calls or to force the phone into the mode you want. Hit clear to exit.)

A pretty good phone.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I picked this phone up a few weeks ago and so far I like it alot. Easy to use, and the battery life is great. The only problems that I have with the phone is that I have to pay to be able to play games and stuff. Argh. So while my brother plays all types of games on his phone to kill time, I just sit and look at a sreen that tells me to pay 3.95 min. per month to pay a game. Thats right, one single game! Yea, I know that I am being petty, but still. I need to kill time as well. Also, as stated before, the manual is garbage. Tells you what the phone can do, but now how to do it? Ok, sure. I would love to be able to change the wallpaper to a image of my choosing also, but what the sales lady told me, and what you can really do are two diffrent things I guess.

Fun to use, expandibility for future

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had to switch from another carrier to upgrade my previous phone, so I went with Verizon. Then I took a week to decide between the VX4400 and VX2000. I wasn't sure that I wanted a flip phone (I prefer flat, one-piece phone like the VX2000 for usability, easier to carry) but I guess the color screen hooked me. The phone after 2 weeks of use is great. And I have only made 10 min. worth of calls, but THE BATTERY STILL HAS A FULL CHARGE. Menu is easy to use once you get used to it. Speed dialing & looking up saved entries is a snap. I like a lot of things about this phone. Here's what I don't like: There are ways to customize the phone, like wallpapers etc. but there are no changeable faceplates. Also the phone does not have a normal ringer, it has MIDI voices, so while it is good at playing musical ring tones, it does not have any way to ring like a phone. This is annoying. Also the ringer is too loud on the softest setting (requires tweaking of downloaded ringtones to get around this). I like Verizon so far, but one thing is you need to ask the store personnel in very specific ways to uncover things they would not otherwise divulge. For instance I called and asked 3 different stores, if I buy the VX4400 and get the $25 basic service, can I access the Web? Their answer : Yes. True answer (discovered later when I actually tried it): You need to buy something called Mobile Web for $6.95 a month.

Fricken Sweet

Pros:

Cons:

Review: its a pretty light phone and it has a real nice screen, alot better than the motorola, the voice dial works very well even in loud areas, and the differnt colors of the external LCD can tell you if its a call, a text, or a reminder without even really looking. all around its a great phone.

Incredible Phone and Great Value

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My Mom and I recently picked up the LG VX4400 from Verizon Wireless and I am very impressed. We upgraded from a Motorola phone and this was a spectacular leap forward. The color LCD screen is extremely easy to read as are the buttons. The phone is also compact and lightweight(a huge improvement from my previous cell) and the features, such as voice dialing and Get it Now downloading for games and ringers, are excellent. Best of all, since my Mom and I were previous Verizon customers we got the phones for free! If anything can be found wrong with the phone itself, it would be the ringer volume which , on low, is still a bit loud. This is by no means a major flaw because it only takes one button to put the phone on vibrate. I also agree with others on the owners manual. Someone who doesn't have a lot of electronic experience (i.e. my mom) might find the learning curve a little steep and the manual a little vague. Others can become masters of the phone just by fiddling with it for a while. Basically, if you're a Verizon customer looking for an upgrade that's easy on the wallet and packed with features then there should be nothing stopping you from getting this phone.

Poor Reception Theory

Pros:

Cons:

Review: On my previous phones (motorola Timeport and Kyocera 2235), the reception in my "home area" was usually a full Digital signal, signified by a D. In areas not covered as well, I would drop down to an A signal, and occasionally lose reception entirely. On this phone, I don't get D at all, just A or "1x" ... though the phone does list a "D" mode in it's Icon Glossary (Menu -> 9 -> 3) ... My theory is that the phone is trying to get this new 1x signal and if it doesn't get it it defaults to Analog and it is somehow skipping over the standard D / Digital signal that I used to have no problems with. The phone also seems to search for service a lot... almost every 8 seconds or so, it'll switch from a strong "1x" signal to a weak "A" or no service at all. *228 doesn't seem to change it's abilities or search frequency in my case. If anyone else sees the same thing on their phone or knows how to change this behavior, feel free to contact me

Touchdown!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The LG4400 is yet another reason why if you are unhappy with your current phone (or provider..) to upgrade. With rebate only $100 @ Verizon. As a former VoiceStream, Cingular, and ATT Wireless subscriber - Verizon blows all three away in coverage. The phone is mint and has been the first device (IMO) that has exceeded my expectations in quality and features. Like a nice BMW, the phone grows on you with age, I love this phone more today than the first week I bought it. You have tried the rest, now get the best.

But can I swim with it?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just purchased the LG4400 to replace my Samsung3500. Wow what a difference in size although the quality of both phones is superb. The LG4400 interface is very easy to use and highly customizable. The screen looks great.... kudos to Verizon for carrying it. Now I swam with my Samsung and after some tanning it came back to life, hope my LG is as hard-core!

Blows the T720 Out of the water!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just replaced the Motorola T720 yesterday with the LG VX4400. What a difference in quality and logical arrangement of features and software. I had the T720 for three months and it was nothing but trouble. The phone's build quality felt cheap and the software as very poor. I had frequent problems of the phone locking up and the only way you could get it to work was to remove the battery, reinsert, and restart the phone. When this happened it usually meant that your prior settings were changed. I got a replacement phone a month ago and the Verizon customer service reps assurred me that the prior problems had been fixed. No such luck. I really tried to like the T720 since it did have a lot of nice features, but in the end a cell phone comes down to reliability and quality and the T720 just did not cut it. The VX4400 on the other hand is much more solidly built and the software and features are much more logically laid out. The color screen is great and the menus are very intuitive (they need to be since the users guide is a bit cryptic in explaining the features and how to use them). The voice activated dialing works great and the sound quality is great as well. A minor quirk is the fact that the automatic answer feature is not limited to just when you have the headset in place like on the 720. That will be a little less convenient when driving. But overall this is a great phone and I regret having spent three months trying to ignore the 720's problems. If this proves to be as reliable as the other comments on this site seem to suggest then this will be a long term companion.

Great phone better than Motorola T720

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Well I have had the phone for about 2 weeks now and really love it. Co-workers have the T720 and to me my LG VX4400 blows it away. Better color, easier to use. Menu's and icons are easier to use. External caller id window has many neat colors to pick from. Reception is excellent. One of the best phones I have ever had. Has pretty good battery life. Just seems better made than T720 as well. I have always been a Motorola fan. In fact I am a Sergeant for a Police Department and use my personal Motorola Visar two-way radio over the departmental issued Icom and Kenwood. But here I gambled by mainly going on user comments and picked LG. I am very happy thus far with my choice. Just wish Verizon did not have the GET IT NOW choke hold on customers. If you want ringtones, games, etc. you must use G.I.N. or use these user made programs with cables and a computer. Oh well. Give the LG VX440 a try. You will be happy.

The LG VX4400 justifies your phone purchase!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The 4400's owners manual is scarce of description. However, the phone has developed quite a following on the web and with a bit of browsing, the 4400's menus and features, should pose no obstacle for the novice. It is sturdy and compact, I dropped it from three feet on to a wax tile floor (an accident)and picked it up unscathed from the fall (Luck?) Reception is great, mobile web is fun and Verizon's customer service is top-notch. An overall exceptional purchase considering you get the phone and Verizon. Customizing the phone is possible without using Get It Now, though it should be easier. I bought the 4400 based on cnet's "user ratings" and was impressed by the 97% approval rating from 200 users. My advice is to refer to other websites for features (It has more than are listed, applicable to Verizon's service). For location purposes I live in Santa Rosa, CA and have had no dropped calls.

Out of the box winner!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great phone. I had the StarTac before it and although I still think that it was the best phone of all time, I am just as impressed with the VX4400. I love the phone except for one missing feature...When there are messages, the StarTac would continue to beep every 10 minutes or so to let you know that you haven't retrieved them. On the LG, that doesn't happen. Overall, I am much happier with the LG over the Motorola T720.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you're concerned about how this phone will look and feel in your pocket, let me spoil the mystery: bad and annoying. it's a great phone but i can't stand it's weight and bulk - it bulges out of my jeans like...and is weighty enough to be noticably annoying. if you're fashion and confort conscious and carry your phone in your pocket most of the time, you won't like this phone. i'm returning it for the samsung ach-something. (if you live in brooklyn (e.williamsburg) and are wondering about service, it's great).

Comments after 1 month of use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The Good: External LCD has tons of useful info: time and date, Caller ID, different colors, missed calls, battery, signal strength...side controls for volume, voice memo/call, headset jack. Voice dialing works somewhat well, tip calculator doesn't factor in pre-tax tip amount but is a nice feature to have...voice memo is great...color LCD screen is bright and the keypad glow is cool...battery life is good (would like more than just 4 bars for battery life indication)...sound quality is great...ringer speaker sounds great...attenna is a good design. The Bad: I had a Motorola StarTac that had a side button to send The Power Button is the End Button...not very obvious - my phone shut off when I was driving. I had to pull over and figure out where the power button was located. The two Edit/Action buttons located to the left/right of the navigation buttons are too close to the navigation buttons. I've pressed them on accident when all I wanted to do was push left/right. To activate the vibrate/Manner Mode, you have to hold down the * key or the voice key if the phone is closed. If you press it again it goes to Silence All and then again it goes back to Normal. It would be nice to have a quick way to switch between the three modes without having to press and hold and release and then press and hold. The ringer at its lowest setting is too loud for some situations. Also the earpiece volume's lowest setting can also be too loud. Would like to see a variable ascending ringer like the newer Nokia phones have. No info in the manual on how to connect the phone to a computer...Verizon rep said I had to get a USB cable. Speakerphone option would be nice to have. Recharge terminals are exposed on the phone's battery - LG should have recessed these terminals like the StarTac. OVERALL: A great phone that all my friends and family members want to have.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my first "color" phone. And my first LG. I've always been a Motorola Man but I have to say that many other phones are coming along now that easily beat Moto's quality and features. No phone is perfect but I would say that this LG VX 4400 comes pretty close for my needs.

Good phone but front LCD extremely fragile

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Loved this phone but my wife and I have had it 10 days and her phone's front LCD cracked and stopped working. It cracked while in her purse for 10 minutes and was not dropped or sat on. The only thing we can think of is that when she closed her purse snap, the front lcd must have been just behind it and bore the full brunt of the closing pressure. Though the plastic seems pliable, it could not withstand this slight pressure and apparently damaged the underlying LCD also. Since this is not covered by warranty, and verizon will not replace it, no matter how new the phone is, I recommend you purchase the insurance or carry this on your hip. The leather case may help, but I wouldn't bet on it. Receptions is quite clear though and the menus very friendly. If it hadn't broken so soon or if either LG or verizon offered to replace or repair, I would highly recommend this phone. But for it to break so easily, and so soon, I've got to wonder if this is going to be expensive proposition in the long term.

Another vote for LG's 4400

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really wasn't looking for a color phone, but with the same batt. life of LG's monochrome, and attractive pricing at the time - figured I'd try this. I have had this phone for Verizon's two week eval period, and now wouldn't think of returning it. NO problems, great quality, screen, LOUD tones, etc. Can't wait for more graphics support/wallpapers, etc, but it is a new phone afterall.

Great phone, but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Compared to my old Qualcomm/Kyocera 2035a, the VX4400 has: 1) Poor battery life 2) Poor reception 3) Flimsy navigation keys 4) Annoying "cheek mark" on screen after every call. 5) No ability to have "no wallpaper" 6) Digital (D) and Analog (A) indicator doesn't work. It never says either. Still, it's a good phone. Great value, a ton of features. I just wish GetItNow was an open development architecture (like Palm) so that free applications would be available. Everything costs money!

The Best Phone I've Ever Owned!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The LG VX4400 is far and away the best phone I've ever owned. The reception is superb, battery life is good given this is a color phone. Sound quality is beyond compare though maybe a bit loud. The screen is highly readable and the menus are easy to navigate. Potential users should be aware of a few small problems. . . The manual is just about worthless (the intuitive nature of the phone makes up for this), some features are not fully implemented and the lowest ring volume is still to loud in a quiet envrionment. I like the voice activated dialing and the color coded caller id feature. If you're a Verizon Wireless user, buy this phone!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This phone I received from verizon about a week ago... and I must say I like it. I looked at the moto but it seems to squeak. The hinge also seems to be weaker than the lg. Although the Lg does not have as many acces. as the moto. It does come with some pretty cool software, and concidering that just a year ago the color phones where not even on the market. The LG has some vast improvments over the earlier models such as the screen is at a higher res. than the first generation phones!!!

Outstanding phone, color LCD and feature package

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My husband and I got a couple of the VX4400s just over two weeks ago, and we're both impressed. The size and convenience are great, and the color display is bright and clear. The available battery power is very good for color flip phones, with the three hour talk time and five days of standby use seeming consistent with our experience, so far. Unfortunately, learning to use all the features is a bit of a challenge and seems to require intuition or trial and error with the menu and submenu screens. The manual looks nice and appears to be well organized, only it does little more than describe the phones features. A bit more detail and instruction is provided with regard to text messaging, but that's about it for useful information on how to work the varied features. The performance of our phones has been great. It would just be nice if the instructions, wallpaper, etc., were improved upon. Some of us are still willing to read instructions. With the provided manual, however, you may find yourself needing to make a few calls to verizon support to learn how to use specific functions. We really enjoy the phones, overall, and think the technology LG applied in designing these units is outstanding!

The Best Phone Verizon Has!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was originally planning to get the T720, but like another person mentioned, the phone felt very flimsy. The LG 4400 is lightweight, yet has a solid feel, especially at the hinge, which stays open, and closes gently and easily when you're ready to end your call. The color screen is great, and gives you the option of setting your own backlight brightness. It's very comfortable to use, the antenna stays up when you pull it up, which has been a problem for me with other phones in the past, also. I just can't complain at all!

Phone keeps switching to analog

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All the great aspects of this phone doesn't do any good if I can't get any reception. This is my second lx4400 and it does the same things: either goes to analog or keeps searching for search, which means that no calls can be made or received. A LX10 beside the LX4400 does not lose the digital signal while the LX4400 does. If you can get consistent reception inside your home, then this phone is great, otherwise you may get frustrated with the dropped and failed calls.

Great phone, lousy owner's manual

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had the VX4400 for a few weeks now, and I'm a first-time customer of Verizon Wireless. So far, it's a terrific phone, service is good, Verizon has good customer service...the only complaint I have concerns the owner's manual. It only vaguely covers operation of the voice dialing feature, and I had to call Verizon customer service to get help using voice dialing, and figuring out other features of the phone. All-in-all, I'd recommend the phone, and Verizon, just be prepared to call Verizon to get help using the phone.

I LOVE this phone!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was with Cingular for several years before finally switching over to Verizon. I originally decided on the V60i from Verizon, but was dissapointed once I got it home - I had poor reception at home (we were replacing our land line with cell phones, so this was a big deal). I decided to go back and try the VX4400 - what a difference! I now have perfect reception just about everywhere (except one area of my commute, and I have yet to see a cell phone with reception in that area anyway) If I can pull a signal, I can make a clear call. With a $20 cable from radio shack I was able to customize the phone (new wallpapers/ringtones etc)! My only complaint with the phone is the lack of ringtones - I don't want all the cutesy pop songs and all that, I just want one ringer that sounds like a phone (And I'd like a different vibrate setting as well)

I would say half the time somebody leaves me a message, it doesn't appear on my LCD ( and yet sometimes it does). Also, sometimes a voice mail icon appears HOURS after the person actually leaves the message for me. This is not good. Is it the phone? The problem is, I bought 2 of them (one for my wife) and they both do this. Also, missed calls are not being stored accurately in the menu. If my phone is off and you call, my phone doesn't let me know you even called when i turn it on later. You go to menu/missed calls and it doesn't appear. I honestly think the phone sucks. Are these problems exclusive to me?

Record Conversation Feature

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A feature not clearly spelled out in the manual is the ability to record a conversation while on a phone call. Simply hold down the "voice memo" button on the the side of the phone while on a call and you can record your conversation for as long as you are holding the button down. This is a really useful feature when someone is giving you a phone number, directions, etc. and you can't write them down while on the call. To retrieve, simply go to menu, "organizer" (7), and "voice memo" (4). Too bad about the few folks who are having some problems with this phone, but the 94.0% "thumbs up" rating is a phenomenally positive rating for any phone, and is a real testimony to the the phone's quality, clarity and ease of use. Just look at the other top rated phones here on CNET, and you will rarely see any phone receive more than 80.0 - 85.0% "thumbs up". This really is a great product!

Sound cuts out

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My wife and myself got two of these phones. They both have the same problem. The reception sound cuts out for miliseconds to about half a second multiple times on every call. It makes it very difficult to understand a consveration. The transmition works OK- others can hear us clearly. Others have the same problem with this phone. Even more don't have this problem. Our StarTacs worked OK in the same location. This phone seems to have a problem with reception sound cutting out in certain locations--EVEN WITH MAXIMUM SIGNAL STREMGTH. I would not reccomend this phone to anyone, unless you are sure that all the locations you might use it in are not affected by this rare but real problem.

Best phone and coverage yet!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I left Verizon over 2 years ago because of the Family Plan price. I went with Cingular. I had a Nokia phone that I did not like and the coverage area was absolutely terrible. I couldn't wait until Cingulars 2 year contract was over. They didn't care about the coverage. I live in S. Jersey outside of Sea Isle City. I used other peoples Cell service such as T-Mobile, Sprint and Nextel. I thought that Verizon had the best overall coverage. Nextel was expensive and did not impress me. They are pretty common down here. The VX440 has been a great phone. There are tons of things it can do. I thought the manual could have been better. It needs a wallet size quick guide for the menu. It also needs to tell you what the functions are actually for. I was reading how to do things in the manual but had no idea what a certain function actually did for the phone. The phone itself is great. It's volume is adjustable to become quite loud. It is by far the clearest phone I have ever had in the last 8 years. The buttons light up good and bright. The *send* button is green and the *end* button is purple. No need to hunt or feel around for them at night. All other buttons are blue. It comes with 29 ringers. You can also assign a different ringer to each person that calls you so you don't have to look at the caller ID which is on the outside cover and on the inside full color screen. The screen has multiple wallpapers you can display. There are 99 speed dial numbers. You can download different ringers at a $1.50 each or 10 for $10. A pretty good selection is available. There is a world clock, organizer and tip calculator plus a regular calculator. The tip calculator even figures how to split the tip if several people are on one receipt and you can adjust the tip percentage. You have a timer and a call history. The phonebook offers a lot of information for each of the individuals that are stored/saved. It has text messaging, voice calling and you can record a message for yourself. The phone still has many more functions. Overall the service and phone are fantastic. No complaints here. I don't plan on leaving Verizon again and LG cell phones are giving Motorola some good competition. The phone was compact and comfortable to use. The many available ringers even sounded nice as compared to all the phones I have ever used. The menu which is quite extensive and intimidating actually was easy to use. You just need to play with it for awhile to become accustomed to it. My only complaints are the phone stays lighted up inside and outside when using the car charger. I don't know how long the lighting will last based on this. The manual is good but could explain what some functions are for. All cell phone makers should have a wallet size quick guide/cheat sheet for the phones menu system. These phones are becoming more and more complex.

SO FAR SO GOOD!! NICE PHONE

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had the VX-10 and the service SUCKED. I had the Motorola V120C and the service SUCKED. So far this phone is great. Lots of nice features. Easy to use. The battery life is good compared to other color phones. The Motorola V60i has the BEST service but this phone is a better value. The antenna is more stable as well. The voice dialing works great so far. I will keep testing the service and do an update

A Wise Investment

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The cost is a bother, but it's worth it. The phone continues to amaze me as I discover more of it's features. Just about everything is customizable and the sub LCD screen has 7 available colors, plus combinations. It looks sharp too, I'd say better than most phones. The pictures don't do it justice.

Answer to vibrate then ring feature

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great phone, and it does have the "vibrate then ring" feature. Go to menu, then "settings" (8), then to "sounds" (1), then to "volume" (3), then "ringer" (1) and scroll up on the volume settings. Past the high volume setting is "vibrate & high". Also, the phone will "vibrate and remind" when you have a voice mail message. Again, go to menu, then "messages" (3), then "message settings" (7), then "message alerts" (4), then "voice mail alert" (1), and scroll to "vibratre and remind". I would prefer an audible reminder alert, but this is better than nothing. Also, I cannot get the "vibrate and remind to work with page and text message alerts. Bottom line, this is a great phone with strong reception and voice quality, as well as the best user interface I have ever seen in a cell phone.

Lovin' this phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just made the switch from Sprint and what a huge difference in the consistency of the reception. After doing some research, I chose the LG VX4400 which has many nice features including a color screen. The net price of $99 after the mail-in rebate is a great value compared to the Motorola T720 especially considering the issues I read about on this phone. 30% don't recommend it....the LG VX4400 is the best choice.

Great Phone/Horrible Wallpaper

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like everything about this phone except for three things. I couldn't agree more with the comments on the sucky wallpaper. At least give us an option to have no wallpaper at all. A blank screen would be fine. Perhaps there is a way to do this and I just haven't figured it out. Anyone? I also think the ringers suck. The default is tolerable. I wish the vibrate was a bit stronger and worked with the ring. And the third thing is I wish the phone was a little slimmer. It's a bit thicker than the Motorolas (v60 and T270) making it a bit too bulky for my front pocket. I also wish the font was a little smaller on the phonebook screen so that you could read the whole number without it having to scroll. Other than that, great reception, good feel and ergonomics and a very easy to figure out user interface.

Verrrrry Nice!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Awesome phone! Bought the audiovox CMA9500 initially, but it was too bulky and just felt cheap with the plastic case. I traded it for the LG and the LG is definitely a far more superior in quality, features, menus and sound quality. It just feels great in your hands and has a awesome battery life! 45 days standby time is just crazy!! A 3 hours or more talk time is just excellent for a color display phone. If you are thinking about deciding between VX4400, CMA9500 and the T720. I would definitely go for the VX4400. CMA9500 is just too big and bulky and doesn't have the quality you can get from the other two. The Motorola might be good but the menu's on Motorola is not very user friendly and it just doesn't compare to the battery life and features of the LG.

WONDERFUL Phone, bad extras

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is, by far, the best phone I have ever owned. It gets reception where my old ones had no service, is styled beautifully with blue lights behind the buttons (red behind end and green behing send, as well), and has a very easy-to-use interface. My only problem with this phone comes not from its manufacturing, but from its final software loading. By this, I refer to the background images, off/on load screens, and built in images: namely, they all suck horribly. This problem will be rectified when Verizon allows users to download new ones, but as of presently, this is not possible. So, if you want a wonderful phone and don't really care that the images look like they were designed for a three-year-old, look no further.

This is the Verizon phone to get!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm sure glad I held out and did not get the Motorola T720. This phone blows it away. Finally Verizon is catching up to the other wireless phone companies and providing some decent phones that are feature rich. I got 2 of these phones for free from Verizon..With the $100 mail in rebate and a $100 credit for each phone for being long time customers. The LG VX4400 is a sturdy phone with a easy to use interface, great volume and a gorgeous color screen. Also for the brave computer geeks, there are several ways to hack into the phone and put in personal wallpapers and ringtones bypassing Verizon's expensive "get it now" application. (just do a search on google, sorry Verizon!) You should see my personal wallpaper and hear the "Godfather" ring tone. I highly recommend this phone!!

Great phone but does it sync ??

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My previous phone was the Samsung 8500. the samsung 8500 was actually a superb b/w phone, my first voice recognition phone, my first flip phone. Only problem was, 8500 NEVER CAN DROP CALLS EVEN IN THE BEST COVERAGE AREAS - in particular, it was the only sprint phone i've ever seen to drop my calls BOTH AT HOME AND AT WORK, because the analog components of the 8500 are sh*t. So I traded it in on the VX4400. This phone works like a hose - it disappeared into my hand. I bought it for the 1xRTT and BREW, although don't intend to do much with Brew, and for the Verizon coverage which is great. However, I have two minor gripes, (a) It doesn't have a vibrate-then-ring mode like some other phones, can this be added later with BREW? (b) how can I sync my Outlook calendar with this phone ?? Otherwise the calendar is worthless. For a $400 phone, it had better have this feature, does anyone know who makes the cable / download software ?? please email (gillies@cs.ubc.ca).

Still thinking of getting T720?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had a T720 for 2 weeks. Call me superficial, but I picked it simply because of the brand name and its slick look. Overall, T720 just seems out of touch with consumers. The phone is a bit flimsy and not very user-friendly in a call. I had trouble putting it to my ear for optimal hearing. The worst part is, the phone drops calls much more often than my old Audiovax 9000. The bottom line is, the phone is only a work-in-progress. I exchanged for LG V4400 since, and it has not given me any issue at all. Very impressive.

Top notch color LCD flip phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a wonderful upgrade from the phone I had previously been using with Sprint PCS. The reception area for Verizon appears to be far greater in the Denver and surrounding Rocky Mountains than competitiors, and the VX4400 has an impressive look and feature set to make the transition to Verizon Wireless a positive one. The keypad offers more size and utility than competitors phones, and the display is bright with vibrant color. I'm still in the learning stage with the many functions, having used the phone now for just about a week. If I have one small complaint, it would be that I've found the manual rather hard to follow and very strongly geared in detail toward text messaging. This really appears to be a wonderful tool for wireless use, and I really like the performance of the main color LCD screen and exterior sub LCD. I normally research sgnificant purchases extensively before making them, because I don't want to be disappointed. I'm far from that with the LX4400, and really am pleased, overall.

Best Phone for Verizon Network

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After doing a lot of research on all the phones offered from Verizon, I decided to go with the LG XV4400. This is easily the best from phone from Verizon (maybe even in the whole wireless industry). Here's the breakdown PROS: great reception and call quality (could be do to Verizon's network and the locations where I use the phone), loud ringers, loud earpiece, beautiful color screen, user friendly menus, mutliple color outer LCD screen to signal different notifications (txt, voicemail, missed call, etc), good talk/stand by time with extended battery. NEUTRAL: no normal ringtones (personal taste), 2-day stand-by with about 1.5 hour talk time with standard battery. (decent for a color phone) CONS: the navigation button is hard to use (easy to press "OK" instead of scrolling to next menu item), ringer/vibration notifications for txt msgs, voicemail, missed calls don't work like they should. To download wallpapers and ringtones WITHOUT using Get It Now, requires a lot of research and using underground applications wtih a Data Cable which can easily screw up your phone. =)

A Great Phone From Verizon

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Having had a TM-510 I kind of knew what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised when I got the LG-4400. Some of the things that bothered me about the 510 have been worked out completely on this phone. The directory was easy to set up and it was quite user friendly. The only thing about this phone is I would love to set it to vibrate only and can't seem to get that done. If anyone has that solution drop me an e-mail. I called Verizon one afternoon and the rep told me I was paying for too many minutes and not using them and she cut my package back. I was 2 months from being able to trade in and she approved that and sent me the phone within 2 days. Been a long time since a company told me I was paying too much and cut my bill without a great deal of nonsense. I'm a happy camper with this phone as well as Verizon. I wished they would do something about the "Can You Hear Me Now" guy he is very tiresome.

Nice phone for the price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased this phone when I renewed my Verizon plan. When I was in the store, I was intending to buy a Motorola v60i to replace my annoyingly incompetent Motorola 120c. I found that not only was Verizon discontinuing stock of the v60i, but it was going to cost me an arm and a leg to order one when there were newer and better phones that cost less. Subsequently, I was introduced to the new generation of color flip phones, including the LG VX4400. I was impressed with the maneuverability through the menus of the VX4400, utilizing the large onscreen color icons in conjunction with the big rocker button above the giant, backlit keypad. Configuring the phone to my preferences was a breeze; I didn't even need to read the instructions. The sound quality on the speaker and microphone are a phenomenal leap over my previous phone, and the ringer is incredibly loud even on it's lowest setting. I only wish that there was a normal ring tone on the phone; I find tuneful rings annoying on any phone. To make up for that, LG adds a one-touch "manners mode" feature, which turns off the ringer and switches on the vibrator. Besides the ring tones, my only gripe with this phone is battery life. I only make and receive a few calls daily, and my phone is on from 6 am to 11pm. Under these circumstances, the standard battery lasts nearly four days. From what I'm told, that's not bad for a color phone, but my 120c could go a week without a charge. Fortunately, extra-capacity batteries were on sale when I bought the VX4400, and I'd reccommend purchasing one if long battery life is a necessity. If you compare this phone to other Verizon color flip phones, the LG VX4400 is, by far, the best buy. Between the VX4400 and Motorola T720, the LG phone has better battery life and a larger, clearer screen for a much lower price. Otherwise, they are the same phone. Both the LG and Motorola phones blow the Audiovox 9500 out of the water in terms of ease of use and overall sound quality; on top of that, the 9500 currently costs the same as the VX4400. All in all, I am happy with my purchase and I'd strongly reccommend this phone to anyone who wants the best color flip phone from Verizon.

Awesome keypad key advantage over Moto

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The 4400 has a lot of things going for it -- the screen is nicer than most other phones, it's a competitive size, the battery life is considerably longer than Motorola's t720... But the key difference it the LG's large ruberized keypad that helps avoid mis-dials, makes writing a text message easier, and generally makes the phone feel like a far more upscale unit than the Moto. It sounds like a minor advantage, but when you consider that you interact with the phone exclusively through the keypad, you can see how a significant advantage can lead to a vastly more satisfying phone.

WHY DOES THE RECEPTION SUCK?!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just traded in my Audiovox 9000 for the LG VX4400. I've read nothing but great reviews on this phone and was very excited about purchasing it. After I charged the battery and started using it, I noticed not only backround static on the line constantly, but the worst part was that all the calls were choppy. I was cutting in and out and the caller on the other end was as well. Verizon told me to exchange it for a new one, since it sounded like a phone problem. I NEVER had these kinds of problems with my other phone. Well, I just got another one of these phones and it's doing the same thing. I don't know what to do cause I love everything else about the phone....I already did the *228 to update....does anyone have any suggestions?! I live in the Bay Area....is anyone else experiencing these horrible reception problems?

VX4400! Excelent Phone, Excelent Price. Everything you can ask for and more!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This Phone is incredible. It has great reception even in my basement. I had the Nokia3360 from CINGULAR, which I hate with a passion, and before that I had a Ericsson, which i hated also, and now i'm with Verizon which I love their reception and their phones. Their prices are worth their reception, trust me, I've been to places where every phone Imanigable would have reception problems. (for those who are familiar, RT 202 Heading Amherst, MA) In that road is a solid half hour with no service. Well I love this phone and the reception is great. KeyPad is awesome, small but yet surfable. The connection to the internet was quiet fast, similar to 56KB. Games are fabolous, and Ring Tones. It has a Feature though that is probably the best for those "Law trouble makers" you can record the phone call thats going on at that moment, and also, record a Memo for future reference. These features as well as other ones, Make this LG-VX4400 A dream come true.

something spicy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i shopped around for weeks for a new mobile phone. I was down to t-mobile and verizon due to there nationwide service and affordable phones(unlike sprint). I finally got the LG vx4400 on the 17th and have had a blast with it. I also dont like the idea that i have to pay extra for mobile web and get it now when i already have to pay a good $40+ a month. But the phone has kept me pleased. The talk time on it is great, i personally have gotten over 3 hours on a fully charged battery. I do suggest a leather case though, its silver color make scratches stand out for those people who are worried about appearances. Verizon is an awesome service too. Never had a problem getting reception on all of my trips. My only problem was that i had to sign a 2 year contract to save the $35 activation fee along with an extra $30 on the phone itself. Maybe the fact that im a guy has to do with me being scared to make a commitment that long :)

Great phone with clever interface

Pros:

Cons:

Review: There are many small touches to the interface that make me like this phone. I switched to it from a Motorola T720. This phone was $30 cheaper and has more features than I need. It's also got a responsive and efficient interface. The quietest ringer is too loud and the default charger is a desk cradle (does anyone prefer those?) but these and others are small issues overall. Reception and sound quality are good; I'm using it with Verizon's service in Silicon Valley.

VX4400 Overall Great Package

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've read all the reviews of this phone vs the T720, however, I was using the T720 from ATT GSM service and it was quite nice. This phone, however, seems to be much better with features, ease of use, menu response time, color screen....except the battery life. I can't seem to get more than 1.5 hours of talk time. I've recycled the battery twice and after only 45-55 minutes of talk time, I'm already down to the last bar on the battery meter. Has anyone else seen this???? I just exchanged the battery...but not sure if this will be the fix.

LG sets the standards that others have yet to reach.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've always kicked myself for paying so much for a phone (read: T-Mobile Sidekick) only to deal with its issues and shortcomings. I was so close to picking up a Motorola T720 - after all, there are more Get It Now! applications for it than there are for the VX4400 as of this writing, but you cannot factor that in when reliability and stability weigh in so much into your investment. Remember that you're not just purchasing the right phone, you're usually locking yourself into a contract that is nearly impossible to get out of. So, you better be happy with the phone AS WELL AS the service. The LG VX4400 does not disappoint. It is fully loaded with thoughtful applications such as EZ Tip and Standard Calculator, an multiple Alarm Clock, World Clock, etc., and the menu system could not be easier. The screen is so bright and crisp. The monochrome sub-LCD display can light up in different colors. It's all these little things that add up and make the phone worth its price. The only things I would have like to have seen include a stopwatch/timer, changing the fonts (I like tiny lettering), and a more detailed manual. The software is well-designed, as its hardware, so I fully recommend this phone over any other Verizon phone on the market. The speaker is really as loud as everyone says it is, so you'll never miss a call. Unfortunately, the device that has so many features may appear to be held back by its carrier (Verizon) in order for them to profit on the Get It Now! service - many sections of the manual say the phrase "not yet implemented" which really isn't fair. But overall, the phone is definitely a winner.

Clearly Verizon's best flip phone!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been researching flip phones available through Verizon for several months and was not inclined to make a purchase until the LG 4400 became available. The phone is well built, easy to program and provides very audible ring tones and earpiece sound quality. The phone also receives signals well and the battery life seems adequate. This is a very good product.

This phone is a winner!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Tis the season to raise the bar. Thus, the 4400 was born. I love the features, service & quality. LG is learning what customers need/want and they "bring it" with a bang. This is my first non-Motorola phone. That said i was a tad nervous. ALL my fears were put to rest after two days with the 4400. I'm giving it am 8 for service, as the site offers nothing in the form of "What's new" and/or a date when the 6 features that are currently "not available" will become available.

It is the most pimpest phone ever!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I love this phone. I no all the girls are going to love this. I just love how this phone you are able to choose many different ring tones from Verizon's "Get It Know." Plus the value of it is excellent I paid more first when the Motorola V60i came out and the cost is execellent. The battery is great it last for a long time with the color screen. Another this is with this phone compared to Motorola V60i was I had to raise the antena to get better recieption where with the LG VX4400 I do not need too. Only thing which I do not like is that us custmers need to pay for "Get It Now" and you only get one free ring tone. Othere wise i give this phone a thumps up since it is an answeme phone

At last I can hold a conversation

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After returning my Motorola V60 5 times within 12 months, I gave up and purchased the VX4400. The phone is ugly compare to the V60 or Samsung A500, but now I can have a conversation greater than 30 seconds. In fact, I set a new record where I completed a call before losing the connection. I recommend the phone to anyone who has connection issues, I just wish it looked better.

response to Joe in Ca

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Hey Joe, i found your comment interesting as i went from a StarTac to the 4400, as well. I had the same issue w/ volume until i realized that it wasn't the phone but my positioning of the phone on my ear. the sound hole is different from the startac in that there's only one small "hole" and thus needs to be positioned perfectly on the ear to hear anything. hope this helps.. so far i've been very happy w/ this phone. one comment i have is that there is an area where i live that's notorious for having a "dead zone" - no reception at all normally, i drove through this area this morning and had great reception the entire stretch.

Cons:

Review: I had this phone for about 2 weeks and it's just amzing especially when I purchased for $0 after mail-in rebate. You don't need to touch the manual to figure out all the functions. This phone's menu set up is that easy. What was CNET thinking when it gave the rating?? Please everyone email to Joni Blecher-Joni.Blecher@cnet.com and Brian Bennett-Brian.Bennett@cnet.com of CNET editors so they know how we all feel about the rating they gave to this phone. only a 7.3?!?!?!?!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: alright. ok bottom line is that this phone rocks! i'm not really that enthused i just think that it deserves way better than it's rating. cnet must doctor their results as they listed the motorola at 7.6 when it clearly received a rating of 7.3. cnet also does the same for laptops as a toshiba did better than a dell. this leads me to question cnet's credibility. so it's a good thing to read user reviews...such as mine! if you read the user reviews for the motorola you can see that many customers have been unhappy with it and switch to the VX4400. it's a good switch. The VX4400 features 3 alarms. the sub lcd is able to be displayed in numerous colors which is good if you want a change every now and again. The menu is much easier to naviagate through versus the older VX10. the color display is great as well. you can also download lots of ringers or pictures and other stuff like that through get it now. the get it now is kind of an inconvenience as you cannot use a 3rd party to download stuff as verizon does not even allow for competition. The phone is very light compared to the V60i and in my opinion it looks better than it as well. the display is very big if your eyes aren't that great. so that's a plus. generally speaking the phone is great quality hidden in a very simple and sleek design. i highly recommend this phone out of all Verizon phones. It deserves a way higher rating at least a 9 for it's superb performance!

Cons:

So I've got to suffer with the Audiovox 9500 until the Chinese figure out what we americans really want..." A. Thank you oh so much for speaking on behalf of all Americans. B. LG is a Korean company nitwit. And by the way, I've checked out the phone and I'm pretty certain it will be my next phone purchase based on my history with the VX1. That's all.

LG Rocks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My old LG was looking a little ragged, so I thought I'd try out one of the new fangled phones, I enjoy playing with new toys, so I tried a Motorola T720. Took it back after two days. I live in a hilly part of town where reception is marginal at best and the T720 didn't cut it not to mention the cheap feel of the phone. So I went back to the store and purchased the LG VX4400 and am happy as a clam! The phone's performance is great, it's easy to use and the downloadable ringer tones from Get It Now are fun. I'd highly recommend this phone.

ONE OF THE BEST PHONES YET!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned several phone over the past three years. Overall, I think this is one of the best phones that have come out on the Verizon Wireless network. The style of the phone is just completely awesome! I previously owned the LG TM510 and it was one of the best phone I have also owned, that is why I upgraded to the LG VX4400. My sister has a Motorola T720 and it is the biggest piece of junk that I have ever seen in my entire life. Nothing but a problem. My VX4400 has done nothing but satisfy me. The color screen is bright and shows a lot of color. Not only does this phone have all and more of the features of the other color phones, but it is also small and lightweight unlike the Audiovox CDM9500. The Audiovox may be lightweight but the speakerphone sucks and the phone is the biggest and bulkiest thing ever. The VX4400 rings very loud and the sound quality is good, the only problem that I have with mine is that the person on the other line hears an echo of what they said. The only other problem I have is that I bought a Jabra cordless headset and it makes a ticking noise in the phone when you talk. Guess that it isn't compatible with this phone. Overall this is the best phone of all and I think that I will be very happy with it. I am so far!

Nice Phone for the Money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ive had the phone for about a week now, and really do like it alot. The voice activated dialing is nice when you are driving so you dont have to dial the number. The color screen blew the t720's screen away, when I looked at both phones. My only complaint is that there are no games on the phone. You have to download them to play them, which is okay if they are free, but some of the games charge a user fee.

Blows the T720 Away!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I owned the Motorola T720 for 3 months and the LG VX4400 is a far superior phone. The LG has a perfect color screen versus the T720 screen which is very fuzzy. the Motorola phone is very flimsy and I had problems with the keys not functioning properly resulting in having to re-punch numbers, etc. Do youself a favor and avoid the T720 and buy the LG VX4400, you will not be disappointed.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: CNET: What are you thinking? 7.3? The same as the T720? Have you read the user opinions you post? 91% thumbs up!! You guys must work for Motorola on the side. The VX 4400 is an awesome phone. It does everything the company claims, and it does them really well. Reception and battery life are both above average. The extended life battery still has 3 bars after 4 days of stand-by and an hour of talk time. The user interface is logical and responsive. The phone has been constructed out of durable materials, unlike the T720. Anyone who is on Verizon and wants a color phone, this is a bargain.

Some Negatives

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I think LG hit a home run with this phone. I won't repeat the praises you can read elsewhere here from people who have had more experience with different models. But I will point out some negatives as an FYI to people considering the phone. All in all, though, I would highly recommend this phone. 1) I used a headset while driving, and answer calls by flipping the cover open...but when you flip the cover back down, it does not release the call. Eventually the call will be terminated by the network when the calling party (or the called party, if you originated) hangs up, but you are still using airtime until then, unless you hit 'END' to release it. 2) Software bug?...While using the voice-activated dialing, the phone hiccupped and didn't dial the call. From that point on, I could not initiate a call by any means (voice or manual dialing). I had to cycle power to get it back to normal. This only happened once. 3) The manual is so-so at best...you have to experiment to see how some features are used. I still haven't figured out what the URL is used for in the phone directory entries. I thought hitting 'SEND' when the URL is highlighted might bring it up in the browser, but it does nothing. 4) Quite a few unimplemented features (the URL?, My Folders, picture downloads, some messaging options, etc). Will new software will be downloaded automatically or optionally when these features are available? 5) The voice dial/memo button is so close to the headset plug that it is awkward to press when the headset is plugged in. I use voice dialing while driving with the headset on, so that is an irritation, but minor. 6) The keys are laid out very well overall, but it's not hard to press one of the navigation buttons by mistake instead of the 'OK' button if you have big thumbs. 7) If you're using the menus in subdued lighting and the backlight goes out, some devices will turn the backlight on when another key is pressed but will "throw away" the keypress. IMO that would be a nice option to have since you can't see the screen in subdued lighting without the backlight being on. 8) The voice dialing prompts sound EXACTLY like my grandmother who passed away years ago, and it freaks me out...but that's my own personal issue, not the phone ;) Overall, those are minor things and the VX4400 packs in a lot of features for the money. Highly recommended.

Verizon's Best

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is arguably the best phone Verizon has come out with. It packs a lot of features in a nice, proportional package. Those of you turned off by the odd proportions of the 720, look no further. I won't bore you with duplicate praise - just read Mr. Wallers review; it's right on target. I will tell you of the issue I have found with the phone: 1) phone cannot be opened in stock holster (though can be with the leather holster), 2) the phone is not truly hands-free as the software does not support one-touch answer and 3) the owners manual is the worst I've ever seen! Perhaps something (about 1/2) was lost in the Korean to English translation. The bottom line is this beats any phone out there right now even considering the drawbacks. If you have tried Moto 720 and are discouraged, I highly recommend the vx4400. As Wayne said in an earlier post, just go to a Verizon store and compare them. You'll be sold on LG's vx 4400.

SUPERIOR PRODUCT

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Product Reviewer: Jim Waller Technology&Business Services Review Date: 15 Feb 2003 The LG VX4400 (Tri-Mode 1XRTT/CDMA Digital Network Operation capable) wireless 3G product is by far the most advanced I have purchased. It has features designed for everyday users and goes many steps further by providing technophiles a leading edge product with absolutely phenomenal potential. The feature rich device actually incorporates the best characteristics of wireless devices with those found in personal digital assistants. Although the VX4400 is not a direct replacement for PDA’s it is one step closer to delivering that functionality. Experimenting with the unit’s features was more than pastime it was actually rewarding as the 4400’s real capabilities were revealed. Even though E-911 services are not operative in all portions of the continental United States, there was an added measure of safety and convenience knowing the user could toggle between passive mode (i.e. E-911 active) or active mode (with GPS beaconing engaged full time). It was clear even before the battery pack was installed LG Electronics had once again delivered best of breed to the marketplace. Signal sensitivity was improved throughout the Verizon service grid – an accomplishment not associated specifically with the VX 4400, but further testimony the carrier is working hard to improve its overall service footprint. The large external LCD allows you to see who is calling without opening the phone. Which points to one drawback –the phone must be removed from the belt-clip in order to open the device. As example, the LG TM510 allowed easy opening of the flip with the belt clip still attached, a procedure I found helped minimized dropping the unit. Users who purchase the device configured by Verizon must also be aware the product is only designated for use on Verizon’s Network. This limits portability of the VX4400 to other carriers. Yet this was considered a positive since Verizon is delivering the ultimate wireless service in most metropolitan areas. Other features carried over from previous advanced LG products include: voice activated dialing, dual LCD’s (although the VX440 has a dazzling color display), text messaging, voice recording, calendar, alarm clock feature, phone book etc., however, presentation of these features is vastly improved and considerably more logical in the VX4400. As expected battery power consumption increases, not because standby times are an issue, its attributable to using the VX4400’s numerous features. To date – I have nothing but positive comments to make regarding the LG VX4400. It’s about time an equipment maker delivered a state-of-the-art product. Jim Waller Technology & Business Services

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I went from a Motorolla Star Tac to this phone. I loved the Startac and was going to get a T720 next. When it came time to buy the TG phone was $50 less for similar features. I checked it out in the store and thought it was great. Add screen has 65K colors vs 256 for a better price and it was a no brainer!! The phone sounds great, and is a blast just to configure with sounds and ringers. My cat loves the thing, when she hears the tunes it's like she's on catnip! The phonebook and calendar features are great for someone who doesn't need a full-blown PDA. You can setup a schedule and alarms. Customize rings for individuals or groups of callers too.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I used the Motorola t-720 and the Audiovox 9500 and both of them are nice phones but I love the menu of the LG and the Colors burst out at you. The coolest feature is that it holds 50 text messages in the in box, out box I believe holds 50 as well, my Motorola's was limited to around 40 total. The draw back though is that you have to erase each message 1 at a time. Anyone interested in a color phone make sure you try them before you buy them.

LG Hit A Home Run!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The design, features, build quality and performance of this phone are simply outstanding. The user interface and phone book are intuitive and VERY easy to use. The reception for both myself and my wife have been nothing short of excellent (on both send and receiving ends), and we both travel coast-to-coast routinely. My compliments to LG, as they really got this one right! A suggestion to those that are having reception problems. Definitely try updating your PRL software. Simply dial "*228 Send" and select option 2 when prompted. This will update your phone to recognize any new towers in your service area. Any doubts, call Verizon customer service. In summary, this phone is far superior to the Moto T720. Just read the user comments here at C-Net and over at Phonescoop. However, biases exist everywhere, so Mr. Conroy should be excused for his.

This is a great phone.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently picked this phone up from vzw. Having been an LG (touchpoint) user from the sprintpcs side, I already had some experience with their phones. This phone is lightweight, feels sturdy, has a loud speaker, and is exceptionally clear to those listening to you. (or so I've been told anyway) The features are nice, the color screen quality is fantastic... were talking 16bit (65k) colors here. The phone definitely could have benefitted from a camera or related attachment with this type of color quality in its screen. The outside LCD is large and very readable. When you get a call (and the person is in your address book) you get both the name and the phone number on the external LCD screen... nice! The phone is very customizable, but the built in background pictures aren't the best in the world (it does have download capability for these, but it's just not here yet), and could use a few more 'normal' rings. (though I understand that ringster and modtones through the get it now feature are considering making some normal sounding rings for download) The 'get it now' feature will allow you to download (for purchase) games, applications, and ringtones to further customize your phone. If you want to use verizon for your carrier, give this phone a try for the first 15 days, I think you will be impressed.

not close to the 720...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It is far superior to the 720. To actually rate this phone the same as the 720 is goofy! I enjoyed reading the 720 review when it was first posted on cnet. Not one mention of the issues which all of us user had. That in itself says a lot about the rating process. Each reviewer must have his or her own criteria. I wonder if they even use a live phone? However, to be of any use to the readers, the rating standards should be 1)consistant and 2) based upon a live phone. I won't burden you with reading another glowing review of the VX 4400. I'll sum it up this way: go to your local Verizon store and compare the VX 4400 to the Moto 720. If after handling the phone and looking at the features you believe it is a toss up, let me (and CNET)know. I had 3 720's. The first two had all kinds of software problems. Thank God by the third the software issue was "fixed", but the phone still squeaked and rattled of its poor quality plastic. This is coming from a long time Moto user. The VX 4400 on the other hand has been a dream. It feels solid, no software issues that I've experienced and functionality is great. The phone has a great color screen - again compare the vx4400 to the Moto 720. Outer screen is very nice size and has all the necessities. To be honest, I have to admit that the owners manual for the Moto is much better than the LG. LG get's you where you need to go, but it stops short on providing any sort of expanation of the various functions. I look forward to reading some posts that take a critical look comparing the two phones. My review may have been biased based upon my 720 experience, but at least I'm not ignoring the obvious!

C'mon CNET..only a 7.3 rating???

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This phone rates a solid overall +90% from a good sample of users and I concur. The VX-4400 replaced my VX-1 which was also a solid phone but this is a vast improvment. The menus are VERY intuitive, good reception, good call quality, good battery life, good design and great aesthetics. If you don't like the LCD lighting up when the battery is charging, charge the battery sans phone. If you think the charger is too bulky, buy a travel charger, it's not that expensive (that's why they call it a "travel" charger). I highly recommend this phone and it will be even better once Verizon has more "Get It Now" services for it.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I guess you'd have to define "superslick" before you could count this phone out of that catagory. It has anything you could ever want in a phone (short of having the ability to take oictures). It has style and is very functional. It's extremely comfortable to hold and can be opened with one hand easily. The only place it might come up a little short, is the quality of the sound you get from the earpiece. It's a bit muffled but for the most part doesn't present any hearing problems during calls. The screen resoloution is fantastic and is easy to see even in the sunlight. In summary this is probably the happiest I've been with a cell phone to date (and I've owned many phones from virtually all manufacturers).

Cons:

Review: Just got this phone a few days ago and i really like it. The only weird thing is that the speaker really gives me this piercing feeling in my eardrum! Ive never experienced this with any other phone before so I dunno...just want to warn you if you are sensitive to high pitch sounds. I noticed it makes a real high pitch noise whenever the color screen is lit up. Other than that i would recommend the phone. I live in a valley and reception is great. The ringers could be a little more interesting, but its better than my old motorola.

Better than Motorola any day!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had the LG510 for over 2 years just waiting for this phone to be released. I have talked over 2 hrs. and there was still a charge! Some of my friends have the 720, now they wished that they waited!!!

Great phone for a great price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I finally dumped sprint for verizon and all I can say is wow. I was interested in the T720, the only real alternative for verizon in a flip, but it was way too flimsy for me, the flip top was wobbly on all of the T720s I checked out. My previous Samsung was sturdy and so is this VX4400. The phone is easy to learn and has great abilities, not everything you could ask for but with the promotional rebate it was a great value with excellent performance!

Best cell phone that I ever had

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Excellent phone. All the features are great. Nice loud volume. Battery life is average compared with the other phones that I have had. I live in a secluded place where reception on all cell phone companies is extremely weak, but this phone brings it loud and clear. Highly reccomend it.

This is the phone for Verizon customers!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: In every possible way, this phone is better than any other available for Verizon. I had previously owned a Motorola T720. Guess what replaced it? The VX4400 is louder, has a better fit and finish, and navigates better. I have to strongly recommend this phone!

Delighted

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently activated service with Verizon for the first time and started with the LG VX10 handset. Although the VX10 appeared to do the basics well, there are features that definitely could use improvement - such as more efficient access to call history information and louder ring volume. I knew I would not be content with the VX10 for the long haul. Under Verizon's 15-day return policy, I exchanged the VX10 for the VX4400 and am delighted. The menu system is efficient and easy to navigate. The keypad is well designed and has a backlight in a tasteful royal blue color. For those with large fingertips, some may have a problem when pressing the "OK" button located in the center of the navigation ring. However, I find this to be a logical location for this button. With a little bit of practice, your fingertip will distinguish the difference between the glossy feel of the "OK" button and the textured feel of the navigation ring surrounding it. So far, reception in the Los Angeles area has been good. On a full charge, I made a call to the east coast and talked for 2 hours. The battery indicator went from 4 bars to 2 bars. On occasion, I heard my voice echo when I spoke but that problem cleared up. The VX4400's handset did get a little warm to the touch after a long talk time, but nothing compared to the VX10's noticeably HOT handset after a short talk time. The phone book can store 200 names (allowing you to enter 5 different phone numbers per name). 99 of the 200 names can be programmed for speed dial. Information regarding "Missed Calls" (such as time of incoming call, phone number, and name - if you have that person entered in your phone book)appears automatically on the inside screen when you flip open the phone. If I recall, there was a lot of button pushing and navigation involved on the VX10 to access this vital information. Thumbs up, the VX4400 is a colorful, feature rich, light-weight compact (4 oz.), and user-friendly phone.

Great so far - ? about the GPS though

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great phone for the price, and the colors are beautiful. I haven't had any reception problems but I'm also in the middle of a fairly new area of growth and there are plenty of towers about. I am having a little difficulty with the option disc - my fingers are too fat I think - but I'm sure that will improve as I get used to the phone. I do have a question about the GPS though. Under Settings --> Location you can select between "Location On" and "E911 only" - this seems to indicate that I can get my GPS coordinates from my phone in some way - but I've searched through the manual and found no explanation of the difference between the two options. (BTW, as someone else said, the manual IS pretty weak) If anyone knows, please email me(marc_vanderveen@hotmail.com) or post here. =) Overall though, I'm very happy with the phone!

Best Color Phone By-Far

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was in the market for a Good color phone upgrade. The price was right with the $100 rebate, and so far, I would have paid more. Smaller and better than the 720, the other phone I was considering. I too, like others, wish, however, that the thing had normal ring tones other than the pretty princess tones all the phones seem to be coming with these days. Oh well, a small trade off for all the functions this little phone handles! a BEST buy

Big time phone in a small package

Pros:

Cons:

Review: LG is a fairly new player in the American cell phone market (compared to Motorola or Nokia), but is very quickly becoming a household name. I upgraded from the TM-510 to the 4400 and couldn't have made a better choice. The old 510 was a sturdy phone, with excellent reception, but a few problems (poor menu system, battery life, etc). On the 4400, LG has taken a major step forward. The new features are great -- color screen, BREW ("Get it Now") enabled, GPS, flashing colors on the outer LCD, and more. But the best part about this phone is it does the basics well. Reception has been very good. Those with problems probably just need a PRL update. Call quality is clear on both ends. And the phone book is one of the best I've seen (although it does have a limit of 99-entries). And if you're torn between this and another phone, the big tiebreaker could be the Tip Calculator. Just enter the bill, how much tip you wnat to leave, and it will give you the total and even split the bill up to 99 ways! Buy this phone with confidence!

Best phone Verizon offers

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Don't even think of comparing the T720 to this phone. I went through 3 T720's before Verizon was given the option of losing my business or trading me phones. I chose the VX 4400 4 days ago. I am still on my 1st charge. I was unable to use the T720 in my house. The VX 4400 works everywhere in my house. The screen is stellar, UI easy to navigate and has tons of fearures. Obviously, the feature that would make it perfect is bluetooth. Come on Verizon, when are the bluetooths coming?

Awesome - great phone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I looked at both the T720 and the VX4400. I thought the T720 was very poorly designed and manufactured - so went for the VX 4400. After 6 weeks, I can tell you I made the right decision. The VX4400 is the best phone I've ever owned.

Excellent choice, excellent features

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought 3 of these in the last 2 weeks and am very pleased with not only the quality of the phone but the feature set as well. LG got it right on all counts except battery life, but considering the color features and options, it's a small price to pay. We were able to retroactively get the current 1/2 off promotion on all 3 phones ($99.) and compared to the rest of the choices, these phones are super.

Great Promotional Deal makes this phone outstanding

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wanted a flip-phone so I researched and reviewed several from Verizon (my provider). This phone has the best color screen, the most intuitive menu system and the best battery life of them all. Plus Verizon has a 15 day "trial" on all phones - if you don't like it, exchange it for another one. After a week - I'm keeping this one. Reception is clear and good in the NY metro area. The microphone is good (no complaints from others I call) and I don't get any drop outs. The features are well within my needs - the calendar is a bit awkward but I use a PDA for that anyway. One problem - with a hands-free option - there's no way to answer the phone with the "side" keys - you have to set it to "auto-answer" after 1 or 3 rings. Not bad but you have to set that every time you want to go "hands-free" then set it back when you're not. Overall - a good phone for the money.

For poor reception try *228

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just recently bought the VX4400 and love it. IMO, it is better than the color Motorola however it lacks in that there are several Get it Now features that are currently unavailable on the LG (ex. wallpaper, etc.). However, Verizon will hopefully add these features soon. As for the reception problems, I had them too. However, I called Verizon rep service and they told me to press *228 and update the roaming capabilities (option #2). The call is free and after I did this, the reception shot up. Hopefully this works for you.

whats with the rings??!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: awsome phone! Crystal reception, and solid quality compared to the T720. But the rings is what I can't understand! why do all these new phones- like the samsong sch1310(something like that) not have any straight normal rings?? drives me nuts. but at least u can download new ones... but still there are no normail rings on Get It Now apps. like Modtones, or any of the others. If anyone finds a way to get new rings let me know- garthjantzen@hotmail.com

Just get it...it's that good!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got the phone just 2 days ago and I have been very impressed. The color display is nice and clear although a tad small compared to the Audiovox 9500 or the Moto 720. The outside sub-LCD is amazing to able to display full caller ID info including # and caller. The multicolor lighting for the sub LCD is definitely cool...although you can't set colors for each individual caller. The build quality is very good. Ergonimics are good althought the circular arrow menu control with the OK button in the middle should have been reconsidered as you can easily slip and move to another menu when all you want is to OK a selection. The call quality has been great. It holds onto signals much better then my Kyocera 2235. The sound is clear and loud. People on the other end will think you are on a landline. Sound is LOUD both from the earpiece and obnoxiously loud from the ringer....something LG has fixed since their release of the VX10. Battery life has been pretty good too. I was able to talk 2 full hours on the first full charge with the standard battery. That also include 24 hours of standby and about 45 minute of playing around with the menus. I am someone who charges my phone each night so there is no need for me to purchase the extended battery for $50 ($60-$10 with instand coupon on the VX4400 box at time of purchase). I paid $269 for the phone at retail since I still have another 10 months to go on my 2 year contract with VZ before I qualify for the upgrade. There is a $100 trade in rebate that goes through March 16, 2003 with any old world wireless phone which makes the price easier. All in all, I would definitely recommend this phone. This the the best LG by far. You won't be disappointed!

Best mobile phone I've ever used

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently purchased the LG VX4400 and was at first skeptical since I had never heard of LG before. After a few minutes of use I realized it works great and has a ton of useful features. The reception is great and the color screen is really clear and pleasant to use. It seriously blows the Motorola T720's color screen out of the water. All the menus are really intuitive and the Get It Now feature works flawlessly. The battery life could be better, but it's already better than most of the next generation color flip phones out right now. My only real complaint is that it doesn't come with any games. You have to purchase and download them using the Get It Now feature. Other than that, it's the best mobile phone I have ever used.

Heavyweight contender in a lightweight package.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I picked up a VX10 about three weeks ago and although I liked some of it's features, I missed my rugged and dependable Audivox CDM-9000. The VX10 is a great little flip phone, however the audio quality was not as clear nor as consistent as my 'ol CDM-9000. The support personnel at Verizon suggested I take a look at the VX4400 as part of the 15-day "trade in if not satisfied" deal. Well I looked at it, bought it, and now love it. The VX4400 is a feature-rich phone in a slick little package with above average reception (better than VX10; not as good as CDM-9000). The inaudible ringer problem associated with the VX10 has been corrected. The ringer can now be adjusted so that it is obnoxiously loud! The outside LCD is larger and more legible. The keys have a more tactile feel to them. The menus are more intuative. Voice-activated dialing & memo recording, missing in the VX10, has been incorporated into the VX4400. On the negative side, battery life, while improved as compared to the VX10, is still less that desireable. LG should just offer the extended battery as part of the standard package. Also, I like the fact that you could answer the VX10 without removing it from the standard holster. The standard holster also does not hold the phone securely. It looks as if the phone can easily fall out. That's not too good for a $200 phone. Give me a VX4400 with the extended battery and an improved holster and I would consider this an excellent package for the price.

Eye Catcher

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had the LG 510 since July and had a hardware problem with it this week I got the 4400 and so far a very impressed. Think I will be more impressed once I how to use all features. Sound quality great, phonebook better that 510, graphics excellent battery life ok but I bought an extra battery. Only thing I dont like is that with the 510 I was able to open the flip still in the holder, cant do with this phone. Would recommend highly!!!

Everything in one phone except reception.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My wife and I switched from ATT to Verizon. Had to have new phones. She opted for the Motorola 720, myself the new LG4400. When I first got the 4400 I thought what a phone, great color, easy to use, lots of functions and decent battery life. Now the problems, my house has been on the marginal side for cell phone service. In fact this is why we switched to Verizon, trying to find a service that worked at home. Well Verizon works. At least on my wife's 720 but not on my 4400. Some areas of the house no service on the 4400 the 720 works fine. The bells and whistles and gadgets are fine as long as you have the service to go with it. Buy the 720

VX 4400 Rules!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had the LG VX 1 and had been waiting for the arrival of the VX 4400. I went to check it out at the Verizon store, and i fell in love with it. There are many improvement over the previous models [VX1,VX10]...color to begin with. Then the ringers are lounder and more to chose from. The phone also has voice activated dialing which the VX 1 didn't have. The graphics are more vibrant as compared to the T720[motorola]. The external caller ID has a different color for each call[blue for incoming call, red for a missed call, green when charging, etc]. The download feature [Get it Now!] works smoother than in the T720. With a sleek look, this phone will surely make heads turn and priced at $169.99 will make the buyer delighted :) like i am!

Best Phone I've Ever Had

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just recently traded in my Motorola V60c, for the new LG VX4400. I have only had it for a little bit, but am already blown away by it. A number of my friends have the Motorola T720, and I must say this phone is far superior. Not only is the color display much more crisp, but there are a lot of little features that the LG has that the Motorola lacks. I would strongly suggest picking up this phone, especially since it's less expensive than the T720 as well. The only flaw I have found in this phone is the battery life, but that problem also exists in the T720.
