"Good phone, packs a lot of power... nearly there"

    by L6Echo on June 23, 2006

Pros: PDA functionality, phone, email, messaging, additional Software downloads available

Cons: Requires addtional downloads to get it "just right", some basic functionality missing for $200-400

Summary: Okay, so I did a LOT of research prior to getting this phone, including a lot of comparison on CNET. I wasn't "married" to any vendor either. I wanted a great phone. The mission is to not carry a lot of devices (i.e. phone, and pda, and digital voice recorder, and, and, and...you get the picture). This phone almost does it all. I say almost because if you want Notes, you have to download it from Handango (word the wise, avoid DeveloperOne at all costs). It's also missing Lists, like a PDA would have. [I previously had a Tmobile Sidekick II, which integrated the toys that I wanted, but limited you on a platform for SW apps & also is a little more limited on phone coverage because of carrier.] I also got eWallet to encrypt sensitive information. With that, it's almost perfect. I wanted a clam shell form factor for size vs. the candy bar size you get with the Treo and other Smartphones. I like to keep it in my pocket, and although as "flip phones" go, the i930 is not the smallest width-wise, it is still a lot smaller than the other options out there. What I do like is that it's all containted on one device: calendar, contacts, tasks, Lists, Notes, protected information, Media player, and Voice Note recorder. I haven't missed having Bluetooth, as I have no other devices with Bluetooth, so if you don't NEED it for something, you're not missing out. I dislike that you have to buy functionality that 'should' already be there for the $. I also dislike that it costs an additional $15/mo for email ON TOP of UNLIMITED Data (what is that? You get all data but email data?), but that is a service provider issue and I don't think I'd fare any better on that particular issue with another carrier.
