"Pretty Awesome Phone Excluding A Couple Of Bugs"

by jimmywt on March 8, 2005

    Pros: It seems pretty smart

Cons: gotta gets the bugs fixed

Summary: There has been allot of negative press about this phone, and understandably so when you consider the initial issues associated with the volume levels, and other bugs.

My experience so far has been pretty darn good. Current firmware release 1.3 seems good, with limited issues. The speaker is clearly a weak point, with severe distortion at high levels (as in during the cingular on hold music). I do not find the volume levels (at the low end) to be as much as an issue as other posts here. The guys at best buy indicated that there have been several recalls (orange dot & black dot on boxes); mine had a black dot, which seems to be the current rendition.

The only other issues I have had (4 days of extensive exploration and use) have been Bluetooth issues, and email issue both of which have been mentioned previously.

Bluetooth - These issues do not seem to be related to the phone itself so it is unfair to blast the product. The issues seem to be with the WIDCOM drivers that get loaded when installing the USB/Bluetooth device, not the phone itself. The issues I have are that the phone does not get automatically recognized once it comes back in range, under any circumstance, you have to manually re-connect (Menu>Active Sync>Menu>Connect via Bluetooth). If the phone has been turned off, and back on, prior to coming back in range you cannot manually re-connect as listed above. What you have to do is re-start the Bluetooth Device (right mouse click on the icon in the taskbar, ?Stop The Bluetooth Device? and then re-start it. Once you do this, you can manually reconnect the phone. This seems to be the case when Bluetooth is set to ?On?, or ?Discoverable?. I have limited knowledge of Bluetooth (this is my 1st device) but I was under the assumption that when you walk back in range, the device should automatically re-connect?

Email issues ? I do not download my complete message, but only pull down the header. During that retrieval, I pan through the emails, and select to ?Mark For Download? only those emails I want (due to 60% of my emails being junk). This saves me a ton on space, download time, and cost. When the message content is brought in, about 1 in 10 messages get corrupted (header gets mixed with other message).

The camera portion seems to be getting a little grief also, I found though that if you take the time to set the image quality (1280x960), get the white balance right (don?t use auto), it takes a pretty damn good image. It is after all a phone first, and to expect it to take a printable image is absurd.

Overall this is an awesome phone. Build quality is excellent (back cover may be an issue), but in general it seems very well constructed. Operation is intuitive and comfortable. ?Windows Mobile? seems reasonably tame (excluding the email issue [I assume this is a Windows issue]).

You have to spend some time getting to know the product (forget the manual). You are not learning a phone, but an operating system; if you expect the functionality out of the product you have the responsibility to do the ?due diligence?. If you are looking for a phone with speed dial, buy a phone with speed dial. If you want a phone that seamlessly (relatively) integrates emails, contacts, syncing, basic MP3 playback with a phone, this is an awesome product.

This is by far the worst phone I've owned. Freezes up all the time. Callers can't hear you. Upgrade is difficult to upload and half the time is not available. Motorola service was horrible and they gave up on this phone altogether.

I'm glad you liked it Jimmywt, but with a user rating of 5.7, this phone is not a 9, that's for sure. A 9 is a pretty high rating when you admit this phone has bugs. 9=excellent.

Does the music from the mp3s come out of the speaker in the front of the phone??

I am glad you have not had the issues with this product that I & a lot of others have had. Considering the cost, at least there was 1 phone in the lot that didn't suck. Tell me though, how did you get that much out of the idiots at best buy? When I went back to them, they acted like they didn't care since I already paid for it. They knew nothing about the phone & told me to call the 800# on the paperwork I got when I bought it. I have come to expect that from best buy though & that is another discussion altogether.
