"WORST PHONE I'VE EVER HAD THE PRIVILEDGE TO OWN"

by nizmo on April 15, 2005

Pros: Hmmm....nice looking, perhap? Oh! And it's FREE.

    Cons: Let's see...I had five replacements...and they're ALL BUGGY!!! Oh...and a TWO YRS. contract w/Cingular

Summary: You know what...I had high hope for this phone. But NO!!! I didn't listen to these people here and heed their warning that this phone is COMPLETE GARBAGE!!! That's right garbage. No support or what so ever. IMHO Cingulars must have hire morons and thugs for their customer support because they employ some of the RUDEST reps I have ever had to deal with (now, I thought Sprint was bad, but they come nowhere close to these unprofessional money diggers). Have you ever had a customer support yelling and cursing at you and then hanging up the phone?

As for support from Motorola regarding my issues, they couldn't do a thing. They don't even know the basic of their own products!!! Got transfered to five different technical department each one higher up...but the end result is, at the moment they don't know what to do and have NO PLANS when they'll come out with a new update for the phone. In a word...YOU'RE SCREWED!!! If you have a problem with this phone, beside Cingular keep resending you the same buggy phone over and over.

Now, what pissed me OFF with this phone so much was as following: it constantly lose signal (won't even work in some grocery stores), the friggen internet doesn't work half the time when you need it to (have to reboot for it to work and it take forever to reboot and boot back on), half the time when placing or recieving a call, other end of the line can't hear a word you're saying (no audible voice going through...again, have to reboot), the volume is so teeny tiny, if you're anywhere near a crowd or busy street, you won't hear a thing (you have to buy a $100 dollars bluetoothe headset to hear, (I say bluetoothe because the regular wire headset doesn't work majority of the time). And lastly, it won't sync with my bluetoohe system in my Infiniti.

Whewww...You know what, I'm done with this. Do yourself a BIG favor and stay from from this model and Cingular if you don't want a headache and frustration as part of the features.

The MPx220 is hands down the best phone I've owned, and I've had a boatload of wireless phones over the past 14 years! This thing syncs with Outlook, keeping my home and office PC's both completely up to date with each other, has a brilliant screen, and works flawlessly with the Bluetooth setup in my Saab. I love the thing. The very early ones had flaws, and you have to be sure you have the latest software, that's true. And with him saying the volume is low, that tells me he has an early model with the early (bad) software. You know, I've also found tech people, for the most part, treat customers the same way the customer treats them. And from reading Mr. Whiner's post, I suspect he comes on pretty strong!

Correction: the Cingular rep NEVER called back as he promised! I had to call back after two months...I thought with the Dec. holidays that I would be patient...then all of a sudden, I realized that it had been two months...the cell phone is practically useless for conversation, and I had basically given up on it...w 18 months left on the contract. I also dreaded talking to Cingular, knowing how purposely difficult these people can be...
I think that some of the previous comments were either by people related to Cingular employees, or people who have never suffered at the hands of such demeaning customer service. They are lucky... the phone companies are just like the famous AOL rep that was showcased on YouTube prevaricating and doing everything he could to prevent cancellations. Cingular and Verizon could teach even AOL a trick or two in the nasty department. It is totally Kafkaesque out there!

I totally agree with this reviewer... altough I have a different phone, the Cingular 2125, it has exactly the same problems.
I have also had nightmarish and bizarre experiences with Cingular customer service, beginning with their absolute incompetence in transferring my number from ATT service to Cingular, which they forced upon ATT customers after they took over ATT Wireless...I had to pingpong from their physical store to their phone support endless times, waiting for up to an hour at the store, because each sent me to the other. Now, with the phone problem, which I discussed in depth with a Cingular customer rep in December; he called back with a resolution as was promised. I finally called today again and was on the phone for two uninterrupted hours, talking to 8 people in 4 different departments, explaining my problems to each one, and still did not get any resolution...just more ping pong. Cingular vies with the old ATT Wireless and the landline Verizon for the worst, nastiest and purposely incompetent customer service I have ever experienced in half a century of life, twenty five of it spent in the high tech industry. The worst PC vendors could not even dream of being as rude, passive aggressive and plain insulting as the Cingular, ATT Wireless and Verizon trains its employees to be.

customer support cussing you out and hanging up... yeah sure that sounds believable. the phone you got probably was a defect... there's no way this phone is as bad as you describe it. CHILL WITH THE CAPS!!!!!!!!!!! lol

First off, Cingular has a 15 day trial period with any phone. These issues would evident during this time and you could have returned the phone. Secondly, tell me what cell phone company's customer service is not rude? They all are, so for you to have expectations that Cingular would be different is your own fault. Thirdly, it is not the phone's fault that it drops call in some grocery stores. GSM system has a more difficult time penetrating buildings like grocery stores. There are some Wal-Mart's that I cannot make a call. Do the research before you give false criticisms. Fourth, if the phone is still faulty after the 15 days, they do have a warranty exchange program. If this is still not to your satisfaction, they have a policy that they can credit your account a certain amount of dollars per year, anyway. They can credit your account. I know these things because I used to sell their products.

The phone looks like it is a good one and there are plenty of good reviews on it from other websites. Motorola is horrible when it comes to their tech department. Unfortunately, you have to be very specific when it comes to directing you to the right person. However, most cell phone manufacturers are the same. Nokia is just as bad. Nevertheless, Motorola has a 90 garuntee on their phones. So, if there is an issue, they can directly handle it.

I do not want this review to discourage people from the phone. The writer did not realize their options in regards to the issues with this phone and his negative comments in regards to the phone are in the minority. The main issues he has with the phone are not the phone's fault itself other than the connectivity issues and speaker issues. From my experience with Motorola, do not buy the first generation of a particular model. The first run on them always seems to have more issues than later runs. Wait a couple of months before buying the phone and you will find you have a better quality product. Let other people buy up the first batch of the phones before you get yours. That is my plan. Historically, the speaker issue will also be taken care of as well as any software glitches.

Just because your car has bluetooth does not mean ANY....bluetooth phone will work. Read your owners manual....Only certain phones will work...its who ever Infinity has a deal with.

Wow, sounds like you had one heck of a time with both the phone and with Cingular. I've had the phone since February and although there are not as many programs for this OS as for the other more established ones, I found some cool ones. I did have to do a lot of the figuring out myself and tech support in general is often useless, but I love the phone and find it does most of what I had hoped. It never drops the signal and I can connect to the internet in most places. My newest cool addition is Mapopolis with the Globalsat bluethooth gps receiver, both of which work flawlessly with the mpx 220 and both of which I highly recommend. JKB
