"Great promise but didn't deliver"
Pros: Form factor, screen, Internet speed
Cons: feels slow, lousy synching, doesn't support outlook notes.
Summary: When i purchased this, i was excited as hell.
Having taken it home and worked with it for the last 12 hours or so, i can tell you that i'm bummed and that it is going back.
First of all, if you use pop email, synching is a nightmare. Even with techs on the phone from both Verizon and Moto, they couldn't tell me how to set up pop email in a way that even resembled real time email. I put it next to my bberry and sent a half dozen messages. They were like night and day. The bberry get's it instantly. The Q has to wait 15 minutes to send a message. Then, it only sends you part of the message. if you have atachments you have to request that they be sent the next time around. Yes, you can force a synch but it's a tedious and pointless process just to read an email you are already in the middle of.
Next, the active synch product synchs to Outlook, as long as you don't use the notes portion. What??! Are t hey serious? Yes, in fact they are. If you don't have exchange , the activesyncyh doesn't support all of Outlook on your Q. In fact, the Q doesn't even have a memo/notes application on the unit. i thought i must have missed the sw or accidentally deleted it but the Moto tech guy confirmed that the Q doesn't support NOTES from Outlook. How lame is that?! Why build a phone and then have it handle 3 qtrs of the synch???
I tried downloaded 4 programs that shoudl have run on the Q. of them, only 1 of them (Slingmedia's player) actually ran. The others all bombed out - and this was on links directly from Moto's Q web page. I'm hopeful that this will get fixed as firms gen up Q based solutions but for now, it was pretty weak.
The Q has a gps on board and has the capability to turn it on (vs just accessible for 911 calls). I did so and had hopes to find a mapquest type solution that would make use of it, but here again i was dissapointed. I did find a site www.alk.com that claims one is coming but that didn't do much for me during my 15 day trial period.
Again, i was very excited to get the phone. Now that i have had it and tried to work with it, i have to say, it feels like a miss.
(A friend of mine independently got one 2 days ago and he has already returned his as well due to similar reasons).
Sufing on the phone was very nice. EVDO is fast and the screen is sharp. However, not having a touch screen sucks when surfing. It's just not efficient using a scroll wheel to scroll though all possible links....
In concept the phone is great. Maybe if you are an exchange shop, many of these hassles go away. Otherwise, I'd stear clear and wait for Moto (or Nokia) to get it right with their next model.

Happy to read about the lack of support for Outlook Notes. As recommended, I will wait for a new version to come out and stick with my Treo for the time being.

I have had my Q for nearly two months. Additional problems I have noticed... the standard battery that comes with the Q is no where near enough to make it through a day of regular use. Even the extended battery I purchase cant keep up if you are using any type of data connections. Another drag is the fact that I have to "Power Off" my "Q" at night just so it will charge. It doesn't charge when the darn thing is on and connected to the charger.

Every new product will have its problems. I have the black Q from Verizon with the second firmware update and it has not crashed once, the battery lasts for two days with moderate use (standard battery), and it does everything a smart phone should. I'm sorry this user had problems with his phone, but I think you'll find that most people has very satisfied with this phone. Early adoption has its price. You get to be this first with the cool new product, but you get to experience the "teething" of the first units. My adivce, get the black Q. It's sweet!

Hi there. I'm a reporter with Crain's Chicago Business and am working on a story about the Motorola Q. I'd like to talk to some people who own or owned Q phones about how it worked. Please e-mail me at jjargon@crain.com on 10/10 or 10/11.
Thanks. -
A lot of your complaints can be solved by adjusting settings on the phone.
For instance, the attachment thing. You can actually set the phone to download everything the first time.
As for email retrieval, you can do a s/r anytime you want through your email program.
I'm not 100% sold on this phone (I bought it two days ago) because of it's lack of MS Office support, but as far as email and multimedia go, it's top notch -
How about the inability to modify an MSExcel or MSWord document? On my Samsung I710 runnig Mobile V4 I can actually work on a spreadsheet; on the Q with Mobile 5 you can only view them.
Whats the point in havinbg a Pocket PC if you can't actually work on it? -
The summary of this comment is: You don't know what you're talking about, the Q isn't a PDA, it's a smart phone.
Here are the areas where you are lying by making incorrect statements:
Sync time for the Q can be 5 minutes. Just like the "bberry" you can change the sync time. Also - manual send/receive isn't that hard. Pressing 3 buttons is difficult?? How do you dial phone numbers that aren't preprogrammed?? Voice activation??
You can tell the Q how much of the messages you want to download. This saves space, which if you haven't been able to tell, the Q is minimizing it's use of. If you want the entire message you can get it.
Regarding not having Exchange, again, did you know this was a smart phone, and not a PDA? Where are you trying to sync your "notes" from, that isn't on a server somewhere? I understand it's POP, but can you store your notes on your POP email server?? What provider does that?
And who uses notes anyway? If you're that behind in productivity - use GoodLink or some 3rd party to sync your notes. I've installed it, it's not that hard. You should just use tasks or your calendar. ha, notes.
The Q is like any smart phone - it takes a little learning. PDA's are so much less intuitive - but because you probably have been using them for years you don't remember the learning curve.
The rest of your review is pointless banter, so I'll save my typing for making my own factually correct review.

What's wrong with MOTOROLA? its terrible, I have Razer not long ago, slow menu, bad speaker phone, can't filer background noise. bad bad bad .... I end up throw the phone in trash. When I see this M Q phone, I think of I may give it a chance again. thanks for the great review, save me a lot of money.

An excellent review ... it covered the points that I was most interested in knowing about. At this stage of the game, a touch screen for ease of navigation is a must. Slim and sleek are just cosmetic ... I need a device that meets my professional needs as well. Thank-you for the good information.

When I first saw the Motorola Q I feel in love with its design and its features. I personally purchased it because it had more of cellular edge in regards to the camera function and the expandability options integrated into a smart phone which the black berry lacks. In addition to that pocket pc based devices are a lot more comprehensive to the average consumer. The Q is very slow, takes forever to open application and even longer to close them and the short cut key on the device are even slower (camera takes at least 15sec to load). So whatâ??s the point of having a camera short cut key when the moment has passed when you camera has finally loaded. Another thing that disappointed me is that they are going to add a faster processor in the GSM version as well as Wi-Fi. The worst thing by far for me would be the texting. When I receive a text I hit the short cut key to read it and then I end the text by hitting the end key. When I receive a new text I have to go into the task manager menu end the text application so I can read the text without see the last one first. This takes too much time is becomes tedious when texting back and forth. Another thing that I just gets me going is the fact that you canâ??t use the scroll wheel to access many things and then you have use the soft keys. I would give this smart phone only 1-10 due to the fact that the phone functionally is good. Motorola should keep making cell phones not smart phones! The Motorola Q should only be sold to the rejects of society and recommended to ones you wish bad fortune.

My cell phone contract is up in March and already looking for a cell replacement.
Looking for a smart phone and Motorola Q sounded like it would fit the bill HOWEVER from your review I can only hope that they work out all the bugs by then. There's always the Palm Treo but a bit PRICEY. -
hey is the network its not the phone even if u r in ev-do network if ur not no good worst verizon has a delay of the network even placing a phone call and data and there alot of black holes!!!!

What about Treo? Isn't Treo the standard?

I agree with some of what you have to say. The RIM is nice but it does not have the voice activated dialing for 200.00. I think it is a matter of preference. Go to the store, play with it, go home, play with it, if you don't like it return it. That is what I do with all these phones. I might keep the Q just for the reason that all these high tech devices are killing my 401(k) investments, if I added this money to a money market fund I would be a millinare by 55. I need a cheap business device that does the basics. Its good for that.

Based on your "I put it next to my BlackBerry" and "here's this list of all the product markeitng advantages the side of the BlackBerry box says it does" comments my guess would be you are a RIM employee.

I have had mine for one day now. I don't like to rush to judgements, but I don't see this phone making it through the 15 day trial period. I have half a mindto return it today. I guess if Samsung could have fit all the great features into a shell similar to the Q then they would have.
Its pretty, its the sexiest smartphone out there, but it falls far short of the abilities of a Treo 700w or the Samsung i730. So I have basically decided to stick with the i730 until something better comes out.
