Pros: Lightweight, excellent pda, nice upgrade from treo 600.

Cons: As a phone it gets lousy reception or frequent dropped calls.

Summary: The day the TREO was released with Verizon I purchased the phone. Immediately I noticed poor reception, usually 1 or 2 bars where I had full signal with my LG6100. The first call I made was dropped, and about 1/2 of all calls thereafter dropped. Again, almost half of all calls were dropped!

The reception is not strong, or will go from 4 bars to no service randomly. On one 2 hour call where there has always been full signal, the call was dropped 9 times with the client. Having no landline to switch to I had to keep calling back. Very bad for business, thankfully they were very patient.

As a phone, it is extremely unreliable.

Tech support suggested the phone had a manufacturers defect and recommended I swap it during my 15 day worry free guarantee. The new phone had the exact same problems. I made many more calls and tried all the suggestions from tech support and still had the same issue. I was called back a week later from a Verizon rep and was told that they had run tests in my area and spoken with employees who had been using the phone prior to the release and no one had given the same feedback as I had.

I thought that was odd since I spoke with other individuals who owned the 650 who had expressed the same problems, some of CNET’s customer feedback had the same problems, and a couple Verizon employees I spoke with had the same problem! When I went to return it the 2nd time I was told Verizon together with Palm are aware of the problem and have held the inventory of 650’s and are doing software updates with them before they are sent out for purchase. I was also told to go to palmone.com and get the updates for my phone there. I checked the website out and there are no updates for Verizon customers at this time. I went back to the store again, returned the phone, and have gone back to my LG.

I probably will purchase it again but not until all necessary updates are done…it could be 1, 2, 3 months or more until all the kinks are worked out. In the meantime I need a phone that is reliable and actually works. I recommend any who are interested in purchasing it wait a few months.

    Updated
http://www.palm.com/us/support/treo/treo650verizon/ has a at least one update for Verizon TREO 650 customers. Hope there are more to come!

I have the same problem with my Treo 650. It had been so bad my wife told me to get rid of the expensive gadget since so many of her calls got dropped. I did update the phone, but continued to have the same issue of weak signal and dropped calls. The work around I accidentally stumbled on was to use the Blutooth headset. Since I started using the headset, dropped calls have been few and far between, even in weak signal areas. Using speaker phone also seems to avoid the dropped calls. It must be something in my head interfering with the reception.

This review is not consistent with my experience. I have had the Treo 650 for about 4 months now. I waited until Verizon offered it because I wanted the Blue Tooth that the Treo 600 did not have. I have been extremely happy with my purchase. I almost never drop a call (unless I am visiting Cape Cod where Verizon service seems to be terrible). Blue Tooth works great. I am able tosync the unit up with both my home computer AND my office computer so both calendars are in sync with my Palm unit.

I have a hard time reconciling my experience with user who rate the 650 so low. I would by it again in a heart beat. I LOVE it.

I switched to Cingular because Verizon kept dropping the calls. I think Verizon needs to send the "can you hear me now" guy to a few more places. My Treo 650 works great now that I am with Cingular

I've been searching the web for the type of problem that you describe with Treo 650 reception and I haven't been able to find much, until I read your comments. I don't understand why the problem isn't reported more often, because my calls are dropped at least 50% of the time and I've never seen more than two bars. I ordered my Treo online in mid-July but didn't receive it until mid-August after three attempts by Verizon to send it. For the month prior, I used an inexpensive Audiovox with Verizon to be sure the service would provide good reception at work, which it did consistently. Then I got the T650 and rapidly discovered how useless the phone is, although I love the PDA capability.

I made a business trip to D.C. in August and consistently had the same problem, no matter where I was. I talked to two people at that convention, three people on the plane, and two people at my work place that ALL report the same problem. All of these people used a variety of wireless services. Some of them have switched to a Blackberry and the problem was immediately resolved. Although I'm past the 15-day return period, the local Verizon manager has agreed to allow me a swap to a Blackberry, although they haven't finished doing the necessary paperwork.

In the meantime, I downloaded the Verizon update that came out in August, but it has changed absolutely nothing. I just don't understand why there aren't more complaints on the web, muchless why PalmOne hasn't addressed the problem (it also occurred with the Treo 600 for many owners).

My Treo 650 from Verizon exhibits none of the poor behavior this reviewer describes. Even in fringe areas (northern Michigan, far from any road), this phone performs well if any coverage is available. The only dropped calls I have seen are when I've been far from any coverage (consistently 0 bars in the wilderness)--and I've seen none of the 4 bar to no bar behavior this reviewer talks about. Heck, I was even able to email and surf the web out in the middle of nowhere--where Verizons coverage maps show no coverage. Take this opinion with a grain of salt.

    Hi guys,
I have a question for you. I'm on the sprint network & they offer both the Treo 650 and the PPC6600. Now i've read all the comments from both parties. Bottom line they both suck. However let me ask which one would be better for a medical student who will probably be using his PDA functionality more then the phone aspect. So far I've heard a lot about Palm's poor web capabilities and i've heard a lot about the PPC's poor phone capabilities....so which would be better?
