"Best Treo Yet......." on by wking33
Pros: Teathered Modem, Crisp screen, easy to use software, clear call quality, Fast EVDO internet
Cons: Can't keep your beer cold
Summary: Seriously this is the best Phone i have ever had. I have owned the Treo 650, 700w(for a day), and many other cell phones that have not been up to par. Until the 700p, the 650 was my best phone. The 700p blows the others out of the water. With the same functions of the 650 plus new features like teathering, EVDO, and (in my opinion) an easier to use keyboard. Palm really went all out this time and if you are not sure if this is right for your look around at other phones. After you are done looking, check this one out again and see how it compares. I do not use this for business, rather this is my personal phone. Really though, the only drawback is the service plan with verizon....79.99 for voice, 44.99 unlimited data, 15.00 for teathered modem use. Gets a bit pricey, but if you want all this in one great package it is will worth it.

"Almost perfect" on by zeroohm
Pros: Screen size/resolution, battery life, palm OS
Cons: EVO speed fluctuates, phone earpiece needs improvement
Summary: I was ready to purchase the Motorla Q and anxiously waited for its release. The week it was available I went to Verizon and was quickly disappointed. Yes it is thin but there are many usablility issues (see the CNET reviews - the complaints are valid). So then I realized the 700p just came out also and got exited all over again.
I have been using Palm organizers since the original Palm Pilot. I once thought about getting the Treo 600 or 650 but I could not go backwards in screen quality. But the 700p matches my Zire 71 in resolution (although it is slightly smaller).
The 700p is one of the best products I have ever owned. Here is a list of what I like about it:
1. Seemlessly migrate prior Palm data (contacts, calendar, etc).
2. Fast internet connection (sometimes).
3. Great screen resolution (320x320).
4. Intuitive functions and buttons.
5. Touchscreen.
6. Uses full sized SD memory.
7. Camera has decent resolution (1.3 MP).
8. Good battery life (unless you are a heavy internet user)
9. Very good quality speakerphone for a portable device. It actually seems to be pretty good at duplexing (allowing two people to talk at the same time).
Here is a list of my complaints:
1. It is sometimes hard to position your ear on the phone so you can hear the person on the other end. It is difficult especially in noisy environments. A hands free headset solves the problem but now you have to carry another thing around.
2. My "broadband" connection varies between 90kbs and 350kbs. It is supposed to be much faster. Verizon support told me something about bodies of water causing interference but they were supposed to have a networking expert call me back to help. I never got the call-back.
3. This is not a big complaint but I have noticed that it gets pretty hot when I am steadily connected to the internet. The battery will last about 3 hours with a constant internet connection (and the screen off). With the screen on, you can probably get about 1.5-2 hours. I have several chargers and frequently plug it in so I don't get caught with a low battery. So my time estimates may be off a little.
Here is what I would change to make it perfect:
1. Make it thinner. It really can't be smaller but it can be thinner.
2. Get rid of the antenna bump.
3. Change to a true VGA screen. You may need a magnifying glass to read the super small text but I still want it. Then web browsing will really start to be like sitting at home.
4. Increase the battery life even more. I think the battery life is already pretty decent but heavy use quickly draws it down. In normal use it uses less than half the battery capacity for a full day. But power users will want to be connected all the time. So I would like to see 8 hours of battery life while under constant use.
I think this is the best PDA/Phone out there. It is not cheap, but you get what you pay for (in this case, anyway).
BTW - you can download a little program called PalmVNC (it is free) which will allow you to remotely control your home (or work) computer from your 700p. I use the web browser on my home computer through PalmVNC and it is much faster than the Blazer browser on the phone. Since you are controlling a real PC, you can do everything you need to do (email, spreadsheets, etc.) - while you are sitting in your car waiting for the traffic to start moving again. And all your work is saved on your PC, not your Treo. Awesome. But you really need the high resolution screen on the 700p to make it usable (which is another reason I want a VGA screen). -
"Treo 700p (Verdict: Solid)" on by Spungle
Pros: More stable, it doesn’t reboot all the time, it has a cleaner feel, it supports 2gb
Cons: Processor, Battery Power, and the "hum"
Summary: You can read our review in detail at: http://spungle.blogspot.com/2006/05/treo-700p-verdict-solid.html
...We love the fact that you can assign ringtones to groups of contacts as well as individual contacts, allowing you to have you’re coworkers ring in to the theme song of He-Man and for family members to ring-in to the theme of Facts of Life. Versamail 3.5 is awesome with preset setting for GMail and memory of recently used addresses. We didn’t get a chance to use any streaming video applications, but we expect to have an in-depth review of MobiTV in the near future.
We weren’t too impressed with the battery power. We found that screen brightness was most definitely the limiting factor in the longevity of the battery power, and that using the EvDO did not significantly change the power usage when compared to the 650. We also were a little annoyed gentle hum that was present when the screen brightness was on the second to lowest setting. We’re not sure what that’s about, but if it’s anything like the MacBook hum, someone will probably post about it and you’ll be thrilled to death with everyone’s story about a humming 700p.
Other than that, it’s a solid device. More memory is always a plus, Palm OS 5.4.9 is a must, 1.3 mega pixel camera is cute, and the not so fast, yet to be updated 312mhz processor is a disappointment when coupled with EvDO. -
"Excellent all-in-one solution" on by alexacker
Pros: Verizon service/support, Palm, ease-of-use, seamless interface with Mac
Cons: Lags, a bit bulkier than I'd like it to be
Summary: First off, this is an incredible phone. I researched and researched and researched before coming to the conclusion that this is the right smartphone for me. I will also say that I haven't considered any Windows phone because having Mac synchronization is critical to me.
Also important to this equation is Verizon. Their service is incredible and support has been even better. For example, I had just bought the Treo 650 and the launch of the 700p was announced a day after and the phones were available in the store 2 days after my "worry-free period" ended (ie 17 days). They graciously made notes in the system to honor it and because it was an exchange and not a return or new sale, I waited only 5 minutes rather than over 2 hours. Perhaps I'm lucky, maybe others haven't had such great luck. Also, I live in NY and commute into the city from LI and service is excellent everywhere (even underground in some patches of the subway).
Back to the phone: I've been a Palm user in the past and I think that we can all agree that Palm is fussy and when something gets installed and it doesn't like it, there are a series of crashes and resets (soft and hard). With that said, this phone does sometimes require some patience but if you know what you're doing, you know what to do when something goes bonkers (like your car). The one thing that really does bug me is the occasional lag. The size could be a bit skinner but, hey, so could I too...
All the tools are pretty nice and easy to use, out of the box (ie I read no manuals). For me, it works but if you want more sophisticated, you can download tons of other software at numerous sites.
The keyboard is nice. Bluetooth is incredibly easy to setup and camera/camcorder is quite handy -- wish the pictures were a little bit better but someone will always find fault in something.
Good luck. -
"I've used both the 700w and 700p" on by C834EVER
Pros: Can use the 700p as a modem, chat view of replied text messages
Cons: No Wifi, the Prefrences screen has to be entered to turn of broadband connectivity
Summary: I initially purchased the 700p and found out that the Mac OSX version that I had (10.4.7) would not allow syncing with the 700p and I would have to purchase third party syncing software, apon realizing this I decided to exchange the 700p for the 700w which I already knew I was going to need third party syncing software for, I also heard that the Windows Mobile was a smoother operating system than the Palm OS. I had the 700w three days and and exchanged it for the 700p again. The diffrences between the Windows and Palm operating systems are not as drastic as everybody claims, but Its really the little things that make the diffrence. With the Palm OS I preferred how on a call the button for speakerphone right on the screen, as opposed to having to enter into a menu. Additionally, the 700p text messages that I replied to were put into a chat view, and with how often my girlfreind and I text each other this was a very helpful feature because I didnt have to constantly switch between my Inbox and sent messages to keep track of the conversation. Overall the 700p just seemed to have an ease of use that I could not find with the 700w. Besides these software diffrences the 700p also has a better screen resolution (320x320 vs. 240 vs. 240 on the w) and the p can be also be used as a modem for a laptop.
