    "Another Palm Failure"

    by Mark W on September 27, 2005

    Pros: It's a Treo

Cons: No Wi-Fi, Style and form is getting old

Summary: After reading and watching the current preview of the new Treo, I am amazed that this device still does not have Wi-Fi included. What exactly is the hold up? In addition, there seems to be no improvement in the design of the TREO. Power users such as myself are really getting tired of the "smaller is better" trend with today's smartphones. Palm, how about a super Treo? Give me a larger screen with better resolution, a larger keyboard for sending email and test messages, and Wi-Fi access. Better yet, how about you include a mini-hard drive as well? How about giving us a Treo flip design which would reveal a larger keyboard and screen? Heck, I would pay a premium for a Treo with that design. I have really large hands and SMS messaging plays a large role in my daily life. I'm tired of these ancient smartphones that I have to struggle to use. Give me the Super Treo 2000. Lol, just my two cents...
    Updated
A lot of the posts here mentioned battery life, laptops, and questioned the need for wi-fi. Now that the 700W has been released, it seems a lot of reviewers and consumers are not happy with this phone. My original post was my vision of where cell phones are going. Look around at phones like the iPAQ h6325, Nokia 9300/9500, Sony Ericsson P910i, iPAQ hw6510, i-mate K-jam, LG VX 9800, Blackberry 8750, Audiovox PPC6601, or the HTC 6700, all of these phones include many of the features found in laptops. My wish is to be able to travel with one small device and be able to leave the laptop at home. If you don't like looking forward, fine with me. Maybe you would prefer the suitcase Michael Douglas held to his head in Wallstreet just a few years ago. Thank goodness cell companies kept looking forward. For Palm I would say this, Sony cornered the market for a while with the Walkman but stopped looking forward. Imagine their surprise when they woke up one morning to the iPod. As for batteries, fuel cells may be the answer. Wi-fi? This was too rediculous to answer. Figure it out for yourself Mr. Flintstone.

What are you talking about buddy? This phone is amazing. I have 13 phones, and out of which this is my favorite. I have an Audiovox (HTC, Handspring, etc..)xv6700, and compared to this, it sucks; THe WiFi is slower than the EV-DO network and takes several minutes to connect. And the battery life is also much better. The xv6700 (with a brand new battery) lasts for not even one complete work day of average use (occasional web surfing, a few short calls, email, etc...) compared to the Treo, which gets around two days with out needing a charge. And what are you talking about when you are citing the LG vx9800? That is not a smartphone, it uses your carrier's OS. And don't even get me started on blackberrys... I have a 7130e and a 8130, and both of them get bad battery life compared to this, not to mention the internet browser is sub par. The bottom line is that you really cant find too many phones that combine good battery life, good camera, and an abundance of features for the same price.

In your first post you're describing a laptop. Something of that size would look awkward hanging from my belt in the holster. The 700w is great for what it is, first and foremost, a phone. :)

Mark, there are devices such as the one you describe. Sony just came out with it. They are called "little computers". They make internet phone calls though. Check out the Sony Vaio UX Series. It is very cool. Oh yeah, and aren't they the company that lacks "vision"?

Why does everyone look for WiFi when the EVDO connection is so fast and becoming so widespread. I'm on Verizon's network and in the Philly metro area I regularly get over 700kbps speeds with a minimum of 320kbps or so. I'm not sure a faster connection would get you any gain, you're running against the processor limitations at that point.

It sounds like you are looking for an ultra mobile PC with a phone function. The new UMPCs are horrendous, but they could be a step in the direction of what you are looking for.

Mark all those features you mentioned are already available. Goto www.apple.com enter there store and purchase a 14inch powerbook or one of the new Macbooks. You're being absolutely ridiculous.

    Osei
PS If I've said this once I've said it a million times. WIFI is not crucial in EVDO handsets.

  • reply by: BayshoreTommy on May 8, 2006

Why do you need WIFI if your in a EVDO area, i have yet to find a area that is not in EVDO...WIFI is basically useless, glad its not on this phone...
A hard drive you say? The phone comes equiped with a SD slot, mine has a 4GB card in it, works perfect..
Learn your phone a little better before posting such silly comments..

Yeah it would be nice bigger screen bigger keyboard.. But someone like me loves the design of the treo 650/700 one handed design. No two hands just to type a quick message. Another thing anyone useing the new treo 700.. did they fix the sound? do you need to buy software to be able to hear who you call? how about bluetooth headset is the volume good?

Reviews like this one are useless and can "artifically" hurt or help a product. It will not help surely to make me decide to buy or reject this product, it is just a waste ot time.

This review should not count for the score of the product, only those who own the product.

    Thanks,

    Marco

Yep.. sound like you need a laptop. Treo700w is a great phone.

I was very interested in this phone, but after reading cnet's review and your comments, I'm not even going to have a look at it. I'll carry two devices, thank you very much. As a Verizon subscriber I can get a free Motorola 815 - add a Dell Axim v51x, 624 mhz NOT 312, at $399, and I will have exactly what I need. I am very skilled at pecking at that on-screen keyboard, so that won't be a problem!

Holy crap Batman...let's first of all wake up and realize that Wifi is about as useful and convienent as a dial up modem connection. EVDO is here to stay. VZW and Sprint are EXCLUDING Wifi on their devices for one good reason, no one cares anymore. For those of us that have been using EVDO services for the past year or so we have untethered ourselves from the Starbuck's and T-mobile holding pens of the world. Lenovo, Dell, et al are all releasing built in EVDO chip sets this year and when the price drops to about $35.99 per month, hot spots will turn into ice cold spots.

As for the other devices mentioned, they are very nice and quality has been taken into consideration, but in the business world, where most of these devices are implemented, you had better work flawlessly with MS server products. I can sync with 2003 Exchange efortlessly and love every minute of it.

Treo 700 is a fantastic device and is my 3rd PPC/phone device in 3 years.

What is it with Palm? Why can't they add more memory? Look at the DELL and iPOD MP3 players. They are smaller then a phone but they use smaller Flashchips that hold GB's of software. Why can't Palm add that to their new phones? They are going to lose everything if they keep doing this low-end, high-price deal with their features.

    Mark,

The UTStarcomm PPC6700 sounds like what you want. Alltel offers it, I don't know who else.

CNET has a review of it.

full 3.5 in screen with thumb board add-on.
I like the palm/ms marriage and I will hold out for a GSM version... by then they will surely add wifi... I want wifi as well but it would not deter my buying decision.

  • reply by: rk2469 on October 9, 2005

"getting tired of smaller is better form." well, usually when devices are smaller, they are usually better. If that wasn't the truth, we will be all having miniVax 50,000 with 50,000 tube transistors.

you could use Wifi but I find that VCast feature is so useful than wifi is almost redundant. You can also add wifi SD card, if you wanted to get wifi access.

mini-hard drive. Do you know how much battery that will eat up?

Treo is for people who likes the design of Treo. If you don't like this form factor, you can go to another phone. The problem is, there isn't any. Treo is one of the good-as-it-gets PocketPC Phone.

the style is timeless, why change it.

  • reply by: padmapada on October 8, 2005

There's no evidence that this reviewer has any experience with the new Treo. This review reads like a reaction to the published reviews.

  • reply by: mocheeze on September 27, 2005

How you are going to talk about make the Treo bigger? Make it bigger? Make the the keyboard bigger? What? Man if you want a computer go home. This is a smart phone. Get it....... phonnne. It's still a phone. The function of this new one seems to be good. I mean i wouldn't say way better than the 650 but it has catchy improvments. Again, If you want a mainframe computer to your ear, you need to sit next to one and take your calls.

    "just me 2 cents worth"

  • reply by: rgs1218 on September 27, 2005

...I'm sure Verizon wants users to use their EV-DO network as a substitute. If it does offer near broadband speeds as advertised, would offer greater flexibility (no more searches for wi-fi hotspots)
