    "Excellent phone, poorly designed nagivation"

by zazenboy on June 23, 2008

Pros: Decent call quality, reliable BB device 4 e-mail

Cons: Trackball can stick rendering device useless

Summary: I've had this phone for less than 2 weeks and will be bringing it back to the carrier today. It's got a great interface with instant e-mail, maps, decent SMS, the web is just OK even though it is at EVDO speeds, some pages will not load or display correctly. The keyboard is good with larger buttons and press once capability. The Curve 8330 has a so-so address book and calendar appointment functions that are cumbersome and non-intuitive. What is truly iffy is the small trackball which is the only navigation method. Yeterday, the 8330's trackball was only usable bidirectionally, left or right, making the device practically useless as there are drop down panels requiring up and down scrolling, including web browsing. There is no other way of navigating the device without the trackball, no manual override, and when it does work it's so slow, particularly scrolling to the bottom of web pages or lengthy e-mails. Even though the trackball corrected itself eventually, its strongly suggestive that it will not be durable enough to withstand daily use on a 2-year contract as the carrier requires. If you get this smartphone, make sure you also get the optional protection plan as this device doesn't feel durable and will probably require service within the first year.

sounds like someone didn't use there leather case. Put the phone in their pocket and got dust or lint behind the trackball. if thats not the case stop complaining go to verizon they will clean it for you.
