Pros - excellent performance
- acceptable battery life
- removable battery
- water resistant
- looks cool
Cons - can't get replacement battery doors yet
- Samsung and ATT's bloatware
- contrast ratio on screen could be better
Summary I spent a lot of time comparing this device to the mainline S4, going into the ATT store multiple times to compare the screen, camera, and signal reception. This is a superior device due to the piece of mind one gets knowing they can take a call in the rain or touch their phone with dripping-wet hands. The hardware differences between the S4 Active and the mainline S4 are pretty minor, with the screen being the most noticeable one. I prefer the LCD panel on the S4 Active in most viewing situations. While the AMOLED screen on the S4 offers better color saturation, the whites are yellowish in tint and don't make reading web pages or books significantly easier, and might actually detract from the experience. Some reviews have stated that the reception on the S4 Active is worse than the S4, but I didn't find this to be the case, comparing the two in terms of dBm and asu around the ATT store. In terms of performance, this is a bleeding edge device that offers flagship speed. One minor quibble is that Samsung isn't offering replacement battery doors yet, which will be important to have if the little rubber gasket wears out or gets damaged.
Pros If there are no apps updating, great speed. Okay camera. Great at "finding" other devices.
Cons Price. Construction. Lags.
Summary After 4 years with the iPhone I decided to give Android a try (mostly because I love my wife's htc). From what I can tell, I like the Android OS (maybe), but the Samsung GS4 Active is a terrible phone. It's construction is flimsy--my rubber usb cover flap ripped off after just 3 months and I cannot seem to get Samsung's attention to fix it (countless hours via their Web interface and customer service folks on the phone). My above "maybe" has to do with the fact that my phone is virtually unusable whenever the Google Play Store is updating an app. Virtually, meaning, I cannot text or call; some apps will continue to work, but I absolutely cannot use the phone to call or text for about 5-10 minutes. Restarting the phone does nothing to fix the issue. YOU.JUST.HAVE.TO.WAIT.Okay, so much for this GREAT phone. I've had it under a year and it is hands down the worst phone I have EVER owned. And I'm including my old Nokia 8310 phone. The Contacts App CRASHES all the time--at least 5 times a week--and makes it impossible to call or receive phone calls. And it stays down even after "restarting" and even after pulling the battery. And most of the time when the contacts app crashes the rest of the phone runs sluggish and unresponsive. I would call Samsung to ask for support, but that company's support service is even more of a piece of $h!+. Countless phone voice-prompt menus and you find yourself back where you started ... holding a crappy phone that does no work.
