Pros: Speed, build, useability
Cons: Battery life
Summary: Ok, Well I have had the i730 a month now, so its time for my review. First, the "cool" effect. The slider is awesome. The screen is clear and easy to read (although a touch small) and the extendable stylus is sweet.
As a phone: As with any combo something is always compromised. The compromise here is the phone usage. Initial dialing is easy when you open the slider the phone buttons are locked to numbers. Contact dialing is also easy. The toughness comes when you want to dial numbers after starting a call (i.e when you have to type in a PIN) This requires concentration and you have to look at the numbers, doing it by feel is very tough. But if your not driving its not too big of an issue. Call clarity is par to any other phone I have used. I have had no complaints from people on the other side as to my voice being quiet or loud. I set mine to answer and end calls with the slide... I like that feature. Also the included head set is decent, but I upgraded to a higher quality stereo headset with mic. Also it is very easy to turn the phone radio on and off without affecting any other app for when you are getting on a plane or other area you cant have a phone on.
PDA: I hate palm OS. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. The windows OS is easy to figure out with any kind of PC experience. The today screen is a very easy to navigate quick reference to your mail, appts, tasks and to the bluetooth and wifi connections. At the top there is a dialoge bubble that pops up when there is a missed call or voicemail. This is pretty much your only indication so you have to be looking for it. I think they could have done a better job with a banner or something like that...but again small inconvenience. I am able to run multiple apps with no lag. However I have to remember to actually close apps when I am done...there is a weird windows mobile thing the just minimizes app when you use the X. Odd but I have made it a habit to go to the memory box and close all when I am done. I set the MIT pop up to one of my front face buttons so I have quick access to battery life indicater. This is not anywhere on the phone without first pulling it up.
Buttons: I have read many reviews complaining about the button sensitivity. easy fix...use the key lock. I have had 0 problems with the key lock on. DUH. I have had no problems typing with the keypad. If you can type on a standard cell phone then this is simple. The buttons are spaced far enough apart and they have a feel that tells you that there is no doubt a button was pushed.
Durability: 2nd to none. I dropped this beast from the 7th step of a ladder and other than a nice scratch on the impact point...no loss of function. The battery even stayed on...rare for me. I am a cell phone killer.... This one stood up to me.
Battery life: I am a forgetful person...and sometimes I forget to charge my phone. With this one you can only get away with that one night. Any more than that and you have a dead battery. I bought 3 extended batteries (only 6 bucks apiece..CHEAP) and keep a charged one in my office, one at home and one in my truck. I like the feel and weight of the standard battery better...but you have to make sure you charge it every night.
Internet: I live in a non edvo area. I still love the internet on this thing. Faster than dial up (I did a head to head and the phone won) While I was in Portland and Phoenix (both edvo areas) The net was close to my cable speed. Amazing for a pocket gizmo. I havent tried the wifi and bluetooth. Honestly I dont think I will since the others are fast enough for me.
Apps: I love that it uses windows media. It works very well and plays WMA as well as MP3...and oh yeah...VIDEOS. Voice app is fair, but I have voice recognition apps all together. Word and excell are great for reviewing and making small changes, but not for creating full docs from scratch. But my favorite is that I can take any of my mp3's and make it a ring tone. I even recorded some mp3s and tried it. worked like a charm and is SIMPLE to set up!!!
Over all this phone is great. I love almost everything about it. And with the crappy 700w as the only competition there is none!!!!
