"Great Hardware Ruined by Poor Software"1.5 starson by pjdagost
Pros: Good Construction
Cons: Poor Performance, Completely Uselesss Push Email
Summary: Having somehow lost my Blackberry Pearl, I decided to give the Dash a shot since it synched more directly with my work email using Microsoft Active Synch and seemed to be highly rated here on C-Net. I immediately upgraded the phone to the Windows Mobile 6 which was JUST released by Microsoft a few days before I bought the phone. With my limited experience with Mobile 5, I didn't see any major differences, I suspect .
The operating system is horrible. After using a Blackberry, Windows Mobile seems like using smoke to send signals across an open plain, and this is not an exaggeration. The major issues: you can't make the text on the screen any smaller-your two options are normal and large; You can't adjust the style of the text; The phone can not turn on and off automatically at night so therefore it stays on all night draining your battery; email has to be synched manually due to a bug in the operating system that makes the phone think you are roaming (15 days after a tech call with T-mobile there is still not an update to correct the problem); System crashes daily; transferring music files to the phone took about 3 days because the phone would become unresponsive after the first 30 minutes and require that the handheld and desktop be re-booted before continuing; Active Synch on your desktop is a complete memory HOG and seriously slows down the performance of the desktop; The battery is good for about 24 hours when my blackberry could hold a charge for about 4-5 days; Did I mention that emails don't come automatically and that you have to manually request updates every time that you need to check email (sorry, it's the only reason one would purchase this phone and it doesn't work)
Generally, the operating system is not very sophisticated and certainly not on par with any of the other smart phones available. I don't understand how C-Net can overlook this issue. It is painfully obvious and a serious drawback to the phone. This is the second purchase that I have made using C-Nets reviews and two times they have been completely off the mark. I seriously doubt the objectivity of this site.
