Pros: keyboard, UI is great, the available apps are awesome, compass mode in street view, amazon music = drm free, u don't have to feel like a tool with an iphone anymore, copy paste is very nice, web pages load faster and no checkered pattern

Cons: just battery life really, no virtual keyboard makes one handed quick texts un doable, but that can be fixed with a firmware or good dev. no headphone jack is annoying, but really using it as a dedicated music player would only make battery life worse

Summary: If its this or the iphone for you. think about a few things. if you want to look like everyone else with an iphone, get an iphone. iphones are powerful and user friendly, and closed off by apples thumb up their own butts. but if you want something open, with a fun UI, where the sky is the limit on apps, if you just don't want an iphone but want to be able to do everything it does and more, go G1

also, a really important thing to me is the browser is able to save your login passwords just like a computer. iphone can't do that, and when u say hey thats just something to type in real fast no biggie, think about how often u are logging in to your favorite sites, its alot, and it makes a big deal. also, if you'd like, u can let pages load in the background

The ipone can not be used as a modem. The t-mobile G1 can be used as a modem. I use my Treo to connect both to my PC and to my laptop. So to me the iphone is not even a question, it is useless in that sense to me, but I do love hearing the all your comments.

    To viper396 :
I never sign into cnet...ever really. This is probably my first post. AS A NON-DEVELOPER but someone interested in tech, I think your post underestimates the digital community and culture (the world wide thing that's growing). The people who buy this phone or any device with Android thinking that open source development is a plus are correct in their judgment. I am someone who has discovered, researched, and have been very impressed by the independent developer making things for the community with no intent to profit (i believe that's the definition of a hacker). Apple HAS NOT realized your point about open source because a significant portion of iPhone and iPod Touch owners JAILBREAK their devices and use the Cydia application, along with Installer and Icy, to download community made applications without having to go through Apple itself. While the filesystem isn't open source, the jailbroken devices give the user/developing community freedoms familiar to Open Source.

Being an open platform doesn't mean that you are going to go and develop your own apps to make your device powerful.. An average cellphone user is a *user* not a *developer* as it was noted.. But with an open source platform, developers are not restricted and limited as with apple, and will deliver to you powerful and useful applications.. so as for me (and for a lot of people) "pointless" is not a way to describe the fact that the device is based on an open platform. What most people should realize, is that an open platform empowers all those creative developers to make your device better.. you don't have to do it by yourself.

..Or you may want to stick with your iFart, fart.ing or CoolFart apps in apple store.

g1 is much better thn the iphone ppl! come on u can run pages and apps in the background then come back to them and they will b where u left them! also it has a better market thn the app store because it is open and u can find just about ne app wat-so-ever! but hey stick with ur closed market thts fine if u just want access to few apps! battery life is definately a negative but hey i can replace my own battery i dont have to send it off and do w/o my phone for a few days! also the g1 is completely hackable now some ppl may b afraid of doin tht cuz they r not rly computer smart but u can unbrick ur phone from just about nethng and u can also go back to official updates so no voided warranty! iphone? nope! apple can block u if u have hacks on ur iphone! google practically encourages hacks because it is open source and allows ppl to get a hold of nethng they need to hack with! all in all i much prefer the g1 over the iphone i think its just as easy to use and took about 1 min to learn!

yea i have both a g1 and an iphone and my iphone 3d unlocked is better than the g1 only cuz once unlocked it can do anything the g1 can do and better...also more so the fact that the g1 is OS which evryone makes a big deal about really means nuffin cuz the iphone can do the same....also the iphone is more responsive and its frickin apple the king of multimedia....y not take the king of multimedia and combine with the a phonem makin the perfect phone... jus wait for i2

Exactly what does the G1 do more of? Can you even explain that?

It's time you and the other open source (i.e. Linux) crowd pulled your collective heads out and faced reality. Arguing that something is better because it's open source is completely irrelevent and pointless to most people. Most people do not live and breath computers. Most people will never develop or compile their own applications. Most people do not care if the underlying OS is open source or not. Most people are *users* not developers. Apple get's it, even Microsoft gets it but that simple fact seems lost on the open source community. In Googles best interest emphasising open source on the G1 should be the least of their priorities.
