Pros My copy of Power DVD XP 4.0 came with my DVD player from Fry's for 39.95 after rebates. The System I have is cobbled together from cast off parts from work and runs a P II with 488 Megs of RAM with an Invidia card with 64 Mb built in. I actually went out on September 15, 2003 | Read full review

Pros This is THE only DVD player software I use, i've tried others and to say that they pale in comparison would be an understatement. Fast, reliable, excellent quality and features, what else can you ask for? on June 22, 2003 | Read full review

"Solid player but not perfect"
onSummary PowerDVD takes fewer resources (runs fine on a PIII 733 w/ 512MB RAM)and is easier to use than Intervideo WinDVD Platinum, but with slightly fewer features and slightly lower video quality than that player. Colors aren't as natural and image is not as smooth as WinDVD. The interface still needs work but the high-end features are pretty easy to reach and well explained.

"Very poor picture quality - otherwise good"
onSummary Colours look like they are running at only 16 bit - very obvious in areas of similar colour at mid brightness. Also very CPU heavy. Cinemaster is a much better codec, but the Raviscent player and interface are not much good, and are very unstable

"Pretty good program"
onSummary This program seems to work quite well for me. I have a geforce 4 mx420, and a soundblaster live with 5.1 surround. I also have a fiberoptic converter board for the soundblaster live 5.1 so that i can send the signal from the dvd play directly to my reciever. Power dvd alows me to use this feature with the SPDIF option, however many of the newer patches seem to not have this option, which confuses me as to why they would remove it. As it is very valuable to me, but it will pass through any audio sound from the dvd player, be it dolby digital or DTS. It will also alow me to get DTS and dolby digital through AC3 files, so when i watch movies off my hard drive i get nice sound. The video seems to be just fine too. No problems with color fading or sharpness, works great. The only complaint that i really do have is that all the controls are not explained, or labeled. You kinda have to toy with the program to see what all the controls on the skins are. It also doesnt seem to use up very much CPU or RAM resources, but then again i'm running an atholon XP 2100 and 512 mb of DDR ram... so if you ask me i think the program is worth the price. I like it better than windvd because it's options are easier to configer and not as confusing.

Pros DTS decoding that is passed through and recognized by any decent receiver, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Pro Logic support, works reliably every time for almost a year, not a resource hog when tested on computers less than 2 years old. on June 14, 2003 | Read full review

"Crash!, Crash!, Crash! Heres why"
onSummary Like many other impatient people, I also had a problem with Power DVD crashing my computer. Crash after crash, I finally figured out what was possibly wrong. You should have a processor that runs at least 1GHz, and lots of Ram. Power DVD uses up lots resources.

"Best dvd program around"
onSummary This is the only dvd player I use on my computer. The sound and video is excellent. This is the only program that didn't pause on certain scenes. Yes, if you don't have a good videocard, dvdrom, and soundcard, you'll probably get problems. I'm using an M-audio soundcard 7.1, Nvidia ti4200 64mb video card, Athlon xp2100 processor running on windows xp. For the person trying to get DTS sound, I had the same problem until I found the m-audio soundcard. I use a digital coaxial connection from the sound card to a Yamaha computer hometheater sound system. I normally don't write reviews, but Powerdvd is being wrongfully trashed. If you have a good system with correct configurations, Powerdvd 4.0 works flawlessly. If you have an average system, you're better off buying an $80 dvd player and watching from a regular tv.

"Not as good as it used to be !"
onSummary My laptop came with Power DVD 3 pre-loaded, and it looked good. But I have been very disappointed with picture quality on version 4 and its patches. Cyberlink have also totally failed to respond to my requests for help. My verdict : stick with the earlier version.
-
"Audio encoding doesn't work"
onSummary DTS doesn't with SPDIF passthrough. Dolby Digital 5.1 may work, but switching the audio track during playback will blue screen XP. nVidia DVD player is providing better results.
-
"Great playback and captures"
onSummary I have used this for a while now and it is consitently easy to use, and always provides high quality picture and audio, with the plus of easy navigation on some DVD's that cannot be used correctly on a DVD player.
-
"Why won't it work properly?"
onSummary Received a copy with my internal Sony DVD drive - CONSISTENTLY crashes, causing the whole OS to freeze up to the point where a power-cycle is required. Running Win2K, by the way.
-
"Beware Of Random Region Codes"
onSummary I liked this player, too, until it turned on me. I had a full version for XP and enjoyed it many times. One day, though, it decided to set itself to Region 4 (I'm in #1) and not let go. CyberLink's support was worthless to me!!! I'm a WinDVD4 fan now!
