  • "My experience sucked! Lost saved data!"
    on by 1009337

    Pros On the go work.

Cons I was losing saved data. My fonts were going crazy. Google needs to fix the glitches fast.

Summary Google just lost a loyal customer.

  • "Do not install. *NOT* functional (as of Dec 2012)"
    on by nick_harr

Pros I switched from Dropbox because Google had higher capacity (GB) plans. It was a waste of time because it just meant Google could screw up more of my data.

Cons * Crashes when downloading more than 1GB of files from internet
    * RAM Hog: idle 350-500MB (Dropbox ~50MB); maximum 1.8GB!
    * Needs 8GB of RAM (therefore not-32bit systems)
    * Everytime it connects to internet, it recreates the filetree wasting hours

Summary Do not use it. Ever. It is the cheap and faulty toaster that will burn down your house. Don't even risk it.

    * It repeatedly crashes if you try to download more than about 1GB of files from Google Drive to your computer. This makes it a complete failure as a back up alternative.
    * It hogs a huge amount of RAM:
    > idle RAM usage: 350-500MB (Dropbox uses ~50MB).
    > when syncing, RAM usage can sit for hours at: 1.8GB!
    * Because of it's RAM usage it effectively incompatable with 32 Bit operating systems (with their limit of 4GB of RAM), and it should not be used on systems with less than 8GB of RAM.
    * Slow and massively wasteful of computer resources: Everytime Google Drive makes a new connection to the internet it recreates, from scratch, the file tree. For large datasets this will take tens of minutes, if not an hour -- EVERYTIME you turn on your computer and connect to the net. Only then will it start syncing. And if you have a large dataset, Google Drive will then probably crash (see above problem) if you have a large number of files on the net that you need to download to your computer.

For the record, my computer crashed and I'm trying to restore 200GB of files from Google Drive. It is almost impossible, and I am in constant contact with Google Support. Their honest and sincere recommendation was to download the files individually in 100MB or smaller groups: i.e. 2000 separate downloads!!!!!!!

Google Drive has had this problem for over 7 months now. I don't think it is a problem they can or will fix. This product should be withdrawn from the market.

If you don't believe me see this discussion threat on the Google Support website:
