With Media Jukebox 8.0, J. River continues its tradition of offering a customizable, play-it-all jukebox for Windows users who seek an alternative to Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and Musicmatch Jukebox. The free basic version comes with most typical jukebox features, such as media playback, organization, encoding, and burning. The highlight, however, is its ability to play back more than 80 file types, including the most popular audio and video formats. But some users may steer clear because it lacks some key features, while others may be turned off by its less than beautiful interface. Compared to the current crop of multimedia players (including Windows Media Player 10.0), Media Jukebox is beginning to look and feel dated. After downloading and installing J. River Media Jukebox 8.0 (8.5MB), you will have an opportunity to search and import media files. The Import Media feature choked and stalled our primary Windows XP test bed; we had previously heard a couple of reports of this bug. On a secondary system with similar specifications, we experienced zero hiccups while importing our media (from MP3 and Audible to WMV and RealMedia formats). We were unable to pinpoint the problem with the first system, although we presume a corrupted media file was responsible. The opening screen includes links to relevant Help pages such as Import Files, Play Media, Rip A CD, and Play Internet Radio.

The default interface is open, uncluttered, and decidedly old school, with its Windows Explorer undertones. We like the app's resizable windows and icon-based buttons for ripping, burning, and minimizing the player into its so-called Mini-Me mode. The left-hand window is generally static and houses expandable folders named Playing Now, Media Library, Playlists, CD And Handhelds, and Web Media. The larger, right-hand window is where your media and associated information show up. The visual and functional simplicity of this Explorer-like tree is one of Media Jukebox's strengths. Down below on the left side, you'll find the player and volume controls, the media-title and artist info, playback options such as Shuffle and Continuous, and the playback filter, which allows you to apply EQ, effects, and crossfading. Unfortunately, built-in EQ and DSP plug-in effects are available only as a Plus feature ($19.98 gets you the full-featured Plus version).

When you click Media Library, your entire media library appears in the right-hand window. Here you'll see all sorts of information, which you can sort by column in the typical jukebox fashion. Above it is a search bar that returns results with blazing speed. You can fine-tune your browsing by listing your files by album, artist, CD media, genre, or file location. The interface and the process for adding songs to a current playlist are efficient and intuitive, but unlike Windows Media Player and others, Media Jukebox doesn't provide a separate link to videos, photos, and other types of media. In fact, we were surprised that it doesn't support photo files.

The Media Library logically and efficiently breaks down media files into categories. The search feature is fast and customizable.

Once your media has begun playing, another resizable window appears for video or visualizations. Media Jukebox also includes links to artists' biographies as well as e-commerce sites such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Best Buy, where you can purchase CDs from within the program's browser. The visualizations, while numerous, are mostly uninspiring. The included skins are decent but appear to have been designed in the '80s. You can download hundreds more from jriver.com; however, the built-in link in the program's skin manager is dead. (We should give proper credit to amped2 and iPod, two user-designed, downloadable Mini-Me skins.) Likewise, you can download an additional main-interface skin (a.k.a. Mega-Me) to add to the three color-schemed choices within Media Jukebox.

The Playing Now screen includes resizable windows for the current playlist and visualizations or video.

Media Jukebox 8.0 has a Mini-Me mode with a variety of skins.

J. River Media Jukebox 8.0 is designed as a one-stop shop for organizing, playing back, ripping, and burning music. Perhaps its best quality is that it can play back more than 80 file types, including QuickTime, Windows Media, RealMedia, MP3, Audible, and OGG. The compatibility list includes a mix of heavyweights and lesser-known formats (Liquid Audio, Monkey's Audio, MusicEx), but it doesn't include AAC, DivX, or photo files.

While the application works well for video playback, it has an audiocentric interface and feature set. Ripping CDs is painless and efficient, and you get a choice of OGG, WMA, and other codecs, plus the option to normalize tracks before encoding. You can also download additional plug-ins, such as lossless APE encoding, for free from J. River's Web site. Unfortunately, you won't get MP3 encoding unless you pay for the Plus version. J. River limits CD burning for data and audio to 4X in the basic version. Upgrading to the Plus version will get you maximum burning speeds.

The straightforward setup window for encoding includes a normalizing option. While you get encoding for OGG and WMA, among other formats, you don't get MP3 encoding in the free version.

Media Jukebox includes many useful playback options, including gapless playback, volume leveling, user-definable crossfading, data-CD support, and a Send To feature that allows you to add tracks or playlists to specific points in the Now Playing queue. You can even password-protect the interface using the Party mode. Media Jukebox comes with a number of rules-based playlists, called Smartlists, including Top Hits and Recently Played. You can also create your own Smartlists. But similar smart playlists in other jukebox applications either include more options or are easier to configure.

The application also works as an easy-to-use recorder with options for line-in, CD, mixer-based, and microphone recording. The recording level can be tweaked to your liking within the application itself. Converting from one format to another is a user-friendly process.

Record settings include options for line-in recording and automatic track splitting.

If plug-ins float your boat, J. River offers a range of them, from typical DSP and visualization plug-ins to more advanced ones that give you remote access to Media Jukebox. Developers can even submit their own plug-ins.

Media Jukebox can handle all types of streaming media, ranging from Shoutcast to RealVideo content. You can either manually enter a URL or click the Web Media link, which opens a window with a search bar (you can search 1,000 included stations and add your own) and features stations such as BBC News 24, Bloomberg Finance, and various music streams. Unlike Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and others in its class, Media Jukebox provides no integrated source for purchasing music, video, and other media content.

If you're satisfied with Media Jukebox, you can get the full-featured Plus version for less than $20. Doing so adds a plethora of features, including a rudimentary but effective media editor, which you can use to trim various file types and re-encode them into the format of your choice. You also get MP3 encoding, Media Scheduler (for scheduling playback and recording of files), Media Server (for connecting to your media library remotely or within a network), CD Labeler, and a tagging utility.

One area where J. River Media Jukebox 8.0 excels is its fast search function. Type in a letter or two, and results pop up instantly, even amid gigabytes of data. The program itself opens quickly and outside of a couple of glitches, doesn't skip a beat.

But back to those glitches. Besides the aforementioned spotty Import Media function (depending on the system), we also experienced an application crash when we tried to play a protected, subscription-based WMA file. When we attempted to acquire a license to play back the file, a browser window opened to F-Secure's site for Internet security products. While this won't happen to the typical user, those using an on-the-go subscription service need to stay far, far away from this application (of course, you'll probably be using Windows Media Player for subscription downloads). In some instances, a nonencrypted WMA file crashed the program.

With that said, general playback of audio and video files worked well, as did streaming. We only wish we could access video files in a separate interface from the one for the audio files. CD burning, ripping, and format conversion all worked well, despite the crippling, 4X burning speed in the basic version. Overall, while the program is worth a look for those with lots of different types of media files, program glitches prevent us from recommending it wholeheartedly.

Given that J. River Media Jukebox 8.0 crashed one of our systems more than once (in a variety of situations), a reliable source for support would have been a huge plus. Unfortunately, J. River offers no free direct e-mail or telephone support; instead, users must rely on the online forum, which requires registration for posting. The database of threads can be helpful, but since the list is moderated by J. River, you'll likely not find answers to difficult questions. Within the program itself, the Help pages are straightforward and useful for general problems.

Excellent.only jukebox to retain features of musicmatch

Pros: easily sorts, tags, burns, finds, processes files.

Cons: none at all

Review: This is the best way I have found to manage my vast music collection. Runs rings around Itunes. It sorts and plays all my music files, allows me to get to the files, allows me to recategorize and retag. allows playlistsand easy burning. allows post processing for playing or burning. lost those and more when musicmatch was upgraded by yahoo.

Alpha software sold to paying customers

Pros: Pretty UI, lots of features

Cons: Buggy, unstable, unreliable

Review: This software is not even stable enough to be considered beta - and JRiver have the gall to make people pay for it.
Instead of working on getting the existing product stable they continue to add more and more (clearly untested) features.

As has been mentioned their support and forum are just plain rude. People have a right to get upset when they pay for bug-riddled software - but don't try to get upset with the J River support staff!

Avoid like the plague.

I use it every day

Pros: Easy to use and good sound

Cons: must re-subscribe to "Plus" yearly. DON"T buy it!

Review: I've been using Musicmatch Jukebox 8 since 2001 and upgraded to "Plus" for $20 at that time. I recently got a notice that my 1 year subscription had expired and needed to re-subscribe. I complained and sent them my key and pertinent info proving when I upgraded. They said it was costing too much to keep supporting Musicmatch, so they made a business decision in July 2004 to make "Plus" a 1 year subscription, but people who bought before that date would have it forever. They claim I didn't buy an "All future versions" option. There was NO option like that when I upgraded. So I Still don't have PLUS that I paid for. I'm PISSED!

Best Free App - Most features & Easiest to Use

Pros: easy tagging, plays multiple file types, can play seamlessly between files

Cons: a little buggy (hey it's free)

Review: More fun and easy than Windows Media Player, Winamp, even iTunes!! Upgrade to J. River Media Center 10 with more features like file conversion capability, CD burning, file renaming, etc., plus less bugs.

Cons: I biggest complaint is that j.river only offer a Forum of people. Some who know what they are talking about, the remainder are the complainers that rip apart your question with critcism. I get enough of that from my Wife. One good thing about this program

Unreliable and Unstable

Pros: Good at organizing and finding all of your mp3 files.

Cons: After a couple weeks, MJ started freezing up. On Windows XP, after running MJ and closing, all other programs would not launch. Very disappointed and had to uninstall...which also froze up once before the successful uninstall.

The only way to organize music

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Before MJ and MC (MJ's successor), I had to do lots of work, using many different programs to organize the tags and filenames of my music library. With MJ/MC, I have one tool to rip, tag, organize, and playback all of my music and video files. While the default settings are great for beginners, MJ/MC also offers unparalleled customizability, allowing me to view and search my library in the ways that make sense to me. Support through the on-line forums is very fast, but like any other web forum or newsgroup, if you're a jerk, expect to get ignored. Most people are very well behaved, and the admins seem to be online 24 hours a day.

Beats the competition hands down

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just love this player. I tried many and this one is by far the best. I have a collection of over 2000 MP3 songs and MJ did a very good job recognizing all the tags, both ID3v1 and ID3v2. Easy installation, easy upgrades, flexible configuration, pretty UI, minimizes into the system tray, good menu on the system tray icon. Persistent Play Now list. Highly recommended.

Will not read/play CDs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've always liked Musicmatch Jukebox. I've owned various versions starting with 4. I've recently upgraded from 6.0 plus to 8.0 basic. It initially worked ok but now refuses to read, play, record CDs. I reinstalled and same problems. Thought it might be the drive, but everything checks out okay. I'm now using the software that came with my Sony Vaio computer and it works without any problems. I'm very disappointed with this software and can't go back to 6.0 as it is now incompatible with there music database. I'm a very unhappy Musicmatch customer.

Unstable under Windows XP Pro

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After ripping one CD, close Jukebox and then try to re-start it, it won't. Too buggy. MusicMatch should learn from Microsoft, the Windows Media Player is much more stable and much more inteligent. MusicMatch: Get it working first, then add bells and whistles (that actually work).

Cons:

Review: On installation version 8 retagged my music collection-- MOST of it totally wrong. Even when it looked up the correct tags and I hit accept-- it tagged them wrong!

Version 8.0 unbelievably disappointing!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been a high-end Musicmatch fan for some time. I have the Plus version and the Platinum online music service. Aside from some awkward or user-unfriendly aspect of Musicmatch 7.5, I really liked the program. It upgraded to version 8.0 recently and I can't get it to work at all. No online music. Absolutely no supertagging (crashes every time). The Album Art feature is a joke (no album art). Terrible online support site ... and the only one-on-one support is through email over the course of several days ... For example, you report a problem. They take 24 hours to reply, asking a question. You reply. They take another 24 hours to reply, asking another question. I thought maybe I should redownload and reinstall. However, I cannot seem to download ... server errors at their site. What a reputation killer, Musicmatch. And I cannot believe Cnet did not uncover these very serious flaws! Shame.

A pretty box that doesn't deliver

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Media Jukebox and it's new big brother Media Center offer all kinds of options that look great on paper... But perhaps more effort should be spent on getting things stable than on adding new features. The volume control method is quirky, unlike WinAmp it just links to the Windows mixer, so every time you use the program your system sound levels are screwed up. And trying to get help can be tough... The only support is forum based, and developers don't always chime in, leaving users trying to help themseleves in many situations. I suggest you take a look at the forums before jumping in to get a feel for whats going on. Check back in a couple of months to see if they got their act together.

Does any1 Listen????

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Has the person who wrote the review for MJv8 actually checked on the MANY problems it so obviously has??? If so why hasn't the review been reviewed? Maybe your editor should have a word with the reviewer... oh, wait a minute it is after all 'Editor's Choice'. I think maybe you should listen to all the complaints and take appropriate steps or you might lose some 'rep', might...

Needs a stable reference library, like CDDB

Pros:

Cons:

Review: They, like several others dropped Gracenote CDDB and update far too often, resulting in higher usage costs. Why bother? Musicmatch is the better choice, especially for the money.

Here's a solution for increasing it's stability

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, It produces excellent sound quality, if you have a realiable speakers. Believe me. I haven't found any other Jukeboxes producing such a good quality sound. Musicmatch Jukebox is nothing when compared. But stability wise musicmatch jukebox is too good. The equalizer provided with Jriver Media Jukebox is excellent. It shows the changes immediately. But I have realised that there are many bugs in Jriver jukebox. Fine, if you plan to fix all the problems with Jriver jukebox, follow the instructions. 1. Install it enter your licence and play some one or two songs. 2. Uninstall it properly from control panel. Don't remove it's library files from your system. 3. Do not delete the Jriver directory in the program files directory. 4. Now restart your machine. 5. Again install Jukebox. 6. Your licence will be detected automatically. These steps will help in errorless functioning of jukebox. But in aspects of burning cds, I would recommend you not to use this jukebox. Two thumbs up for nero here. Mind you will not find any other nice software to organize your music files.

Disabled Digital Playback on DVD drive.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really want to like this software, but the bugs are too many. I have been using the 30 day full feature trial version which will not be upgraded. I have a hard time understanding how they can justify $24.95 for technology that utilizes open source software(LAME, YADB, etc). The only reason I tried it out was to see how well it would encode LAME. It does this well although slow. It adds a Xing header to the VBR files encoded so other players can display the length of the track properly. That's the only advantage. It isn't any faster at encoding VBR(set to -alt-preset fast standard) than the freeware dBpoweramp.(In fact dBpower has an option that will increase encoding speed.) Utiliting CDDB is a plus(support for CDDB is strangely missing from Media Center 9). Of the various databases out there(CDDB, YADB, AMG), CDDB seems to have the most accurate information. The biggest disappoint with Media Jukebox is that it has somehow corrupted the digital playback of the DVD-ROM drive. Before anyone says something is corrupted in a dll, I will point out that an unistall of Media Jukebox fixes the problem. I also noticed that it decided to install to the windows directory.(MusicMatch and dBpoweramp do not). I don't trust applications that are buggins installing where many shared dlls are trying to do their work. :) Another thing I noticed, is when using the tag editer in Media Jukebox, the windows file information disappears. This my be an XP issue, but it is still disconcerting to have track numbers displayed in windows explorer. MusicMatch doesn't alter this. I don't know if it adds some sort of propriety tag to the file that is saved, but to undo the change I have to go in and alter the tag with a different application and save it. Strange behavior. In summary, I will continue to rip my collection utilizing Media Jukebox for VBR encoding for music that I plan on listening to. Use MusicMatch VBR for fast VBR encoding for music I don't care much about and Use Windows Media Player for mixed compilations(Media Player handles this the best of any player out there with MusicMatch a close second). As far as playback of music goes. WMP 9 is the best in terms of sound quality however, I am noticing some slow down in loading as My library has grown to over 8000 files. Media Jukebox seems to be strong in this area, but I think that's due to the proprietary database it creates for all your music. I will also put in another plug for dBpowerAmp. It's a great slimmed down app that is meant for audio encoding and conversion. As far as Media Jukebox goes, save yourself some headaches if you don't care about which encoder you use.

Nice software, abusive support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using the software for a couple of years and found it pretty useful. However, support is only available on the forums. When I posted a complaint on the forums about the new pricing structure, my account was deleted, my two posts removed, and I was emailed a warning about being "uncivil." (I think I might have used the four-letter words 'rude' and 'hell,' and threatened them with never buying from them again.

Nice program...IF it worked

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Avoid this program unless you like frustration and want to spend countless hours online at JRivers' one & only "help" source. Too many bugs, too much tweaking required to make the program work. Only available as a download - lose the product license and you're SOL. I foolishly downloaded "free" upgrade which promptly terminated my version of Jukebox as being a trial version. I couldn't locate product license to restore original version. "Help" site said to download previous version as it would still work on my computer. It didn't. Contacted "support" to obtain license - was told they couldn't find my email address (it's still current and where program was initially downloaded) so now can't re-install program w/o paying for another full version. Why is this program an "Editors' Choice" at CNET?

Very, Very, Very Poor Stability

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried this product based on CNet's recommendation and have wasted many hours trying to record CDs between app and system crashes. I uninstalled/reinstalled and can never record more than one CD before the app and/or my system starts crashing. It's features are terrific - if I could actually use them. The sound seems like it wants to be good, but it seems my computer can handle no part of this application. I'm extremely disappointed with the amount of time I have wasted trying to get this application to work properly. I'm running Windows 98, maybe it would run better on 2000.

Great Functions, Poor Stability/Support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As in most comments, the focus here is on what is wrong. I really liked MJ7. It had great functionality and was reasonably stable. Then came MJ8. The core functionality has been nicely updated: the ability to rip/burn while continuing to play music is nice. However, MJ8 has shown a tendency to crash frequently and downloading plug-ins is a nightmare. I frequently get MJ8 crashes when I try to rip/burn two CDs in succession (a system re-boot is usually needed to resolve the problem). Sometimes the app crashes when playing CDs and surfing the internet simultaneously. Error message numbers are provided for each problem but there is no way to reference a diagnostic database to know what it means or how to fix. MJ7 downloads of plug-ins worked just fine; my version of MJ8 continually returns a "server not found" error, a problem reported by numerous others but not yet fixed. The product support people use the standard response - "It works on our machine so it must be you" - in their support web site while providing seemingly inappropriate resolution advice. One user suggested decoding their stored download procedure and perform the steps manually, a suggestion which allowed plug-in downloads to be made to work for me. Because MJ8 relies on a download just to provide a MP3 encoder, this is not a trivial problem. The point is that the tech support capabilities are poor, sarchastic and generally un-helpful until enough users report the problem and someone other than J.River support hacks the solution to the problem. I suggest you access the support pages to see for yourself how helpful tech support would be to you given your level of computer savyness. One other problem is that the developer seems not to have a great sense of what is good about the product and what is a true improvement. For some reason s/he changed functionality, i.e. album statistics, playlist presentation, etc. in a way that MJ8 is less friendly than MJ7. Things that worked in MJ7 don't in MJ8, i.e plug-in downloads, CDDB information access, multiple rips and burns. Visualization plug-ins are not compatable between MJ7 and 8. At the end of the day the net is that MJ8 is the best system (out of six or seven tried) for managing a large database of music and I highly recommend it for consideration but it is a good news - bad news product. Good: it is largely intuitive in how it functions; it has the most robust feature set for organizing, playing and maintaining music files; it has encoding capabilities far beyond MP3; it supports a number of popular MP3 players; it allows basic editing of the music itself; it allows extensions (plug-ins) to be developed by anyone to extend what it can do; it has great visualizations and DSP capability; unlike Microsoft products, the help system is really helpful. Bad: it is aggrevatingly unstable at times; you must know something about computer hardware and operating systems to decode the tech support information to resolve problems; and, the developer seems capricious about what stays and goes from one update to the next; MJ9 will require a new license fee from MJ7/MJ8 users.

I *really* want to like this software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've run a few versions of MJ and it's always been frustrating. I'm dazzled by the feature set and dissapointed by performance. The final straw for me was CD burning issues. I reinstalled my system software (from a clean OS install up) a mess of times in a vain attempt to find out exactly what was causing the inability to burn. WMP & Nero would burn fine 'til I installed MJ. Ultimately I discovered a few factors that might have been contributing to the problem, but I found JRiver to be of little to no help. The only support option, an online forum, seems to me more of a boys club than anything else. (No offense to the ladies that frequent it.) Ultimately, I still find myself dazzled by what the software *should* be. With a recent upgrade to XP I'm tempted to try MJ again, but honestly I don't want to take the chance. I currently run a competitors Jukebox (with all its advert. features turned off in pref) and Nero with all features styl'n. I only have to visit the MJ forum every now and then to remind myself why I'd be best off not giving MJ another crack.

Dialing for Upgrade Dollars

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This unstable program feeds off an open source community while charging for a never ending list of upgrades. They offer an upgrade for payola (within 9 months) and give you a whole new set of problems they expect you to keep track of, and better yet, they blame you for not having the expertise to solve them. They even charged me 22 bucks more for an upgrade that was advertised at 7.98 and said it was my fault. Also, be nice when you complain about a problem, or service becomes even worse. That bit of advice comes direct from their board.

un stable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I liked the look of Media Jukebox. However, it was very un-stable on my computer. It would crash ever couple of mintues. I'm running Windows XP,p4 chip and a gig of ram and other players (windows media player, music match) do not have this problem.

Great functionality, terrible stability

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program looks great and has lots of neat features - but.. it is very buggy and crashes regularly on my Windows ME system. So regularly that it is unusable and I have gone back to Windows Media Player (against my better judgement). At the end of the day all the bells and whistles don't amount to much if the thing crashes on a regular basis. I have a bog standard Gateway- built machine and have downloaded the latest ASPI and video card drivers. WMP runs *fine* on my system, allbeit that it is a pretty crappy jukebox program. However if you believe the MJ support forum any instability is caused solely by the system that MJ is running on - with the chief culprit being the O.S. (i.e. Windows ME). In fact, when someone with a DOS-based Windows complains to them now about the program crashing they just blithely tell them to upgrade to XP! I've got a better solution - how about you guys stop hacking, and stop getting your paying customers to do your Q.A. for you? If it's my system that's at fault then how come every other multi-media app on my P.C. runs fine ?? It's simply not logical and kind of lame to blame the O.S. because you can't be bothered to figure out how to write a solid piece of software. Quite a shame really considering how much of a niche there is for a decent Jukebox program.

This is Da Jukebox...

Review: Best feature is Media Server. I connect from home/work/planet mars. I love it.

Lean Mean MultiMedia Machine!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried other media center programs and many of them were very bloated with glitzy interfaces which would bog down even a P8 12 THz machine. I finally settled on Media Jukebox as my central media program. It offeres a wide selection of CODECs, it can RIP, it can BURN, it can ORGANIZE, and it ties everything together. The development staff are quick to respond to user concerns and requests. Overall I would highly suggest you try this program, it's great! The interface may take a little while to adjust to, it did for me, but I love it!

OK - But hard to add music the way I want to!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Nice program, but try and add music without using their fancy little "import" feature. Forget about it! Adding music for experienced music organizers is a nightmare. When you import music, it names the folder the music is placed in and names the artist/album folder automatically - there's no way to override this nasty thing they probably call a "feature". So if you import 15 different music files and you want them under one generic album (eg: Mix album), you'll suddenly find 15 different albums and artists in your music list! This is because the program found 15 different files and decided to place them in individual folders! How annoying! Good luck.

Won't Rip from Plextor Drive - whas up with that?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like the interface. Paid to download the full version and it won't rip at all from my SCSI drives - Plextor. Hardware is not an issue - it's a software problem. The MJ forums are full of people having the same problem. Beware and test before you buy or you might get screwed like I did.

Horrible sound quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can't believe this is such a popular app- it uses an inferior codec which encodes mp3's with a very flat EQ. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible

Great features but too many crashes (v8.0)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is great software! I will stick with it, but I hope the stability issues don't become a big issue.

Unbelieveable Features

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Didn't know there was a program that could do all that MJ does it's truley incredable

Simply the best, yet complex.

nice try...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I happily and seriously used this app for about a year (and eventually bought it), but i've given up on them... It has more organizational features than any other piece of music sw out there today, but there are just too many other problems. It's a monolithicly clunky app. It hogs memory. It crashes too often. The UI is not user friendly. And worst of all, you could end up like me, organizing your vast mp3 collection by adding extensive amounts of custom meta-data, have the app crash out corrupting its own schema records and find yourself back at square uno, d'oh! Yes, i should have had my custom categories backed up in multiple places... i didn't and now i've lost ages of work. If someone else doesn't hurry up and get this music organization app right, i may have to do it myself...

Great Media, Bad Additions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this program for its encoding features, mp3 to ogg, and so forth. It is top quality encoding, ripping and burning. My only beef with the program is the additional software it comes with. I first thought the Download Manager/Accelerator was a godsent, but then I checked its "speeds" with my actuall download speeds, and it was only about 700kb/s off.

XP BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

Pros:

Cons:

Review: FROM Their Support Site: blue screen crash when burn cd selected Posted by Kent on 07-02-2002 08:26:11 A.M. Every time I click on burn CD with MJ8 I get a "serious error" blue screen crash. The blue screen contains more information than will fit on the screen, so much scrolls past before I can read. The stop parameters are: 0X000000C5 (0X012A740F, OXOOOOOOO2, 0X00000000, 0X8052EF4E) There is no additional information about what drivers or software... I'm running WindowsXP

Need time to learn!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It takes time for me to learn using this new software. I think i may prefer to stay with Windows Media Player, Real One Player and Winamp, since I already get familiar with these software.

for serious music fans

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you are looking for a simple, gimicky 1 button device to play your latest Britney Spears MP3, this jukebox is not for you. If, however, you are a serious music collector and need to organize, convert, rip, and burn high quality MP3 files, this definitely IS the jukebox for you. I have tried all the other jukeboxes at one time or another, and Media Jukebox is truly the BEST there is, bar none. Yes, it could have an easier interface, but only by taking away the very features that make it so incredible. It is definitely worth your time to download this jukebox, play around with the interface, ask questions in the user forum, and enjoy!! The $25.00 price is outrageous!! Its easily worth double that!! The thing that I think I find most compelling about Media Jukebox is that JRiver actively listens to users in the forums and is always open to suggestions on how to improve the functionality and performance of the product. Believe me, no other jukebox product available compares!!

Holy s***! An app that works!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was looking for a jukebox with the simplicity of Windows Media Player 8.0... let's face it, not the best app but it is great at managing a huge collection without a steep learning curve, like COWON Jet Audio. Anyway, silly Windows XP SOMEHOW, through some error in System Restore, lost ALL my licenses... which meant I couldn't play my music!! I decided that was the end for WMP 8.0 - problem was, I couldn't find an app that was really good at managing a 3,000 (and going!) songs. Until I found Media Jukebox -----> WHAT A GREAT PROGRAM!! In just minutes, this app found all music files in my PC and imported them, playlists and all! And it has so much funcionality to it... I'm still fooling around with it. Bottom line, this app is worth double its advertised price if you are a true audiophile. Highly recommended!

The Best Jukebox Out!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The all-around best. Has countless features and plays just about everything out. The new interface looks much better and the performance is great.

User Rating: 10/10

The best around

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Unparalleled, from the vast array of functions and high-quality database capabilities (one user has north of 90,000 files managed through MJ!) to the on-line support in the user forum, in which the program developers participate on what seems like a 24/7 basis. The best $25 you can spend for a jukebox program. I've struggled with the others, and they're not even in the same universe as MJ.
