"Unusable software"0.5 starson by kates
Pros: It was free
Cons: Once I updated the virus definitions, it stopped working
Summary: I just bought a new laptop, and Norton
AntiVirus 2005 came installed as as trial
package. The machine is running XP service
pack 2. I've always been happy with Norton
AntiVirus products in the past, despite some performance problems.
I ran the Live Update to get the latest
virus definitions, and the machine started
giving me errors on startup, and on accessing
Word, saying "Norton AntiVirus 2005 does
not support the repair feature. Please
uninstall and reinstall."
This is documented on the Norton site.
I find it completely unacceptable that
running the software on an out-of-the-box
configuration breaks the software.
Per many web reports, uninstalling and
reinstalling may or may not fix the problem.
I am deeply disappointed, and angry at the
amount of time it's taken me to research and
solve this problem.
This is software manufacturer's arrogance
at its worst - How can I trust this software
to take care of my system when they can't
even upgrade their own software properly?
