Pros: Does a good job of recognizing safe programs; even after a fresh install, doesn't bug you EVERYTIME a program wants to access the internet. Software is pretty much "set it and go."

Cons: Even on my new quad-core, 6 GB of RAM laptop, the fact that it is CONSTANTLY "performing background tasks" is really hogging my computer.

Summary: I upgraded my PC to Win 7 (with a clean install). While the 2009 version is supposed to be compatible, it would not even install for me. I contacted Symantec, and they responded by saying that they transferred my license key from the 2009 version to the 2010 so I could install it. Unlike the old version, it seems to CONSTANTLY notify me that it is "performing background tasks" (i.e. system scans). I am a web designer and an frequently using my computer for demanding tasks. Even still, the Norton software seems to feel that this is an appropriate time to perform system scans, all because Symantec insists that it is much lighter on PC resources. I'm sorry, but if I am using resource intensive programs, this is NOT the appropriate time for a system scan unless I initiate it! I admit that the demand from the Norton software is not as extreme as it could be for this type of activity (it seems to run in a "light" mode for the background tasks), but Symantec really dropped the ball on the 2010 version for determining what is meant by "idol". I appreciate Symantec's customer service in resolving my situation with the installation on Win 7, but I think I will be looking for a different software when my subscription runs out.
P.S. Sorry about the "Molly rant", but as a previously loyal Norton IS user, I felt it "rant-worthy"!

But hey, I'm also sure everyone here actaully folows Leo Laporte advice, who in my educadted opinion really has NO CLUE what he is talking about when it comes to computers. I refuse to listen to his rants about how HP is not a good brand, really? explain to me why a HP Desktop that was purchased in 2003 is still working like the day it was new? sure, it went through a hard disk failure after the expected 5 year life span. But hey, get secretly payed by Apple to promote their horrible computers and watch as the droves of mindless, clueless go into the hipster, pompus self important prick zone that looks like some sort of poorly bulit mock space ship. Really, I could go on and on abput how BAD apple products are (pretty sure the wifi module failed on another piece overly priced garbage that is pretty much an iPod tpuch but get this! it's bigger and is a magical device!)

Really? a Quad Core 6GB Laptop huh? typical Intel machine, thats why Norton on your Alien Ware, is it? because really thats what it sounds like. Or it could be a POS Dell, that could also be the problem. Really, I'm running on a high end version of the HP DV6 Laptop, with ofcourse a supeior AMD 2.8 GHz with 4GB of DDR3 RAM a 7,200 RPM HDD which is not common in garbage brands such as Dell or the insanly overpriced "Status Symbol" other garbage, insanly slow Macs (Trust me I know, I spent 1,500 dollars on a MacBook Pro biggest POS ever, I might as well have went to a casino and flushed it down the toilet because better them get my money than a company who relys on it's zealots for profit)

Constantly doing background tasks? No. It does a background task when it determines that your computer is IDLE, which it should do, and most of them only once a week.
