"Just a software RENTAL - price is for one year only!"
0.5 starson by mwalukPros: The software itself is great. Works well and have never been affected by a virus.
Cons: After 1 year it TURNS OFF! It's not software, just a service that happens to have a box and disc to install the client. This is not the old "subscription" - it completely turns off and leaves your computer unprotected once it has expired.
Summary: They're "renewal screen" should provide one quick button to uninstall it and take you to they're competitor's sites. They're forum is filled with angry users because NOWHERE do they explain this. The same is true of CNET. They have dropped the ball not putting this out front. I have a feeling they don't really use it for a year so maybe they are unaware as well. I don't know of any other software sold this way but others may be in the future if we don't avoid it.

I agree with shagohodmg's review unless you are recieving the service from your ISP all retail antivirus programs are subscription based . And just like car insurance they won't work once the subscription ends .

Reply to shagohodmg's response... I share the views of the original reviewer. I don't expect free updates after expiration, and I doubt he does either - the problem is that the software itself expires, not just the updates. I used to have McAfee, which would at least continue to scan for viruses using the outdated virus definitions. Not the best idea long-term, but Norton won't do a thing once you expire. I have Norton 360 that expired a couple of days ago, and it won't allow me to backup to my own external drive until I renew. Norton needs to tell you upfront that you're paying to rent the software, and that you lose access to ALL functions when it expires.

Most of them ARE time-based releases now. Unless you're using a free anti-virus in the first place, you can't really expect it to update for free forever! They need funds to research and update virus databases so you CAN stay protected.
