With familiar drop-down menus, helpful wizards, and a Web-like Home screen, Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0 is sure to please antivirus beginners. Like its competitors, Panda scans incoming and outgoing mail for viruses, prevents malicious Visual Basic and JavaScript files from running amok, and updates its virus definitions via the Internet. Version 7.0 also features a personal firewall to prevent Internet interlopers from accessing your computer, a tool found in Norton AntiVirus 2003. Yet, Panda falls short on its virus-detection skills and telephone technical support, and it's more expensive than its competitors. Nevertheless, current Platinum 6.0 users will want to upgrade for the improved interface and new firewall, but everyone else should opt for either McAfee or Norton. Nevertheless, current Platinum 6.0 users will want to upgrade for the improved interface and new firewall, but everyone else should opt for either McAfee or Norton.

Installation and interface
Panda Antivirus is easy to install, whether you use the installation CD-ROM or download the program. We chose the latter route and transferred the 29MB setup file to our test PC in minutes. Setup involves little effort from you; when it's up and running, Panda loads a mini icon in the Windows System Tray.

Oddly, during setup, Panda scans only your system memory for viruses--not your hard drive. By comparison, both Norton and McAfee automatically scan both the memory and hard drives. Like its competitors, though, Panda does conduct a full system scan immediately following setup. In our test, the scan took 26 minutes, performance that's on a par with initial scans by Norton and McAfee.

Panda automatically installs and configures its built-in firewall but also allows you to disable the firewall if you choose. Like McAfee's firewall (Norton doesn't include one), Panda creates a list of installed programs that require Internet access and doesn't attempt to block them thereafter. Surprisingly, in our test, Panda failed to include America Online in this list of programs. However, it's easy to correct such an oversight, using a pop-up menu that appears whenever Panda first denies a program access to the Net.

Panda's redesigned interface makes it a breeze to change default settings. To change the mail-protection settings, for instance, simply click the Panda icon and check the appropriate boxes on the subsequent screens. It's also just as easy to schedule scans by following the Scan Wizard's step-by-step instructions.

Feature set
Once Panda detects a virus, it eradicates the viral intruder without pestering you. Norton works the same way, whereas McAfee seeks your consent before taking action. We prefer the automated method, so Panda gets high marks in this category. As with Norton and McAfee, Panda allows you to reconfigure its detection settings to block, delete, clean, or quarantine infected files.

Panda's e-mail scanner works with SMTP and POP3 clients--but not AOL--which means that it scans incoming and outgoing mail for rogue code in most popular e-mail programs, such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Eudora. Panda's on-demand scanning feature also examines e-mail folders, like McAfee and Norton.

Panda loads with Windows and runs in the background, monitoring downloads and files as they're opened. It automatically downloads viral signatures without your input but always posts a screen detailing its activities. Like McAfee, Panda scans ZIP files as they're downloading to your PC, but you have to change the default settings to activate this feature.

Performance
In CNET Labs' performance tests, Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0 is comparable to Norton in scanning speed, the amount of time it takes to search your PC for viruses, yet it takes a significant toll on overall PC performance, more so than either McAfee or Norton. To measure Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0's impact on system performance, CNET Labs used BAPCo's SysMark2002, an industry-standard benchmark. The Internet Content Creation portion of SysMark measures a desktop's performance running off-the-shelf applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. (We did not run the Office Productivity portion of the benchmark because it incorporates McAfee VirusScan 5.13.)

Our test system was a Compaq Evo W4000 running Windows XP Professional with an Intel P4 2.4GHz processor and 512MB of DDR RAM. With Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0 running, our test system scored a dismal 81--a 19 percent reduction in overall system speed. In comparison, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 scored a 97, only a 3 percent reduction in system speed, and Norton AntiVirus 2003 scored a 95, or a 5 percent reduction. (An Internet Content Creation score of 100 represents the performance of our test system without any extraneous software running.) In a test of scanning speed, Panda's 3.1 minutes tied with NAV 2003's time, while VirusScan 7.0 remains our speed champ at 1.7 minutes.

Unfortunately, Panda's virus-blocking performance is a mixed bag. To determine whether the program effectively blocks viruses, we examined its past performance in tests conducted by independent antivirus-testing laboratories. In the latest Virus Bulletin tests, Panda earned the coveted VB 100 percent rating only once in its four most recent attempts, having failed three of the Windows tests. By comparison, Norton AntiVirus won all of its tests, and McAfee VirusScan won its only test during that same period.

However, Panda performed as well as Norton and better than McAfee in live virus tests conducted by
German AV-Test.org. Previous versions of Panda have also been certified by the independent antivirus-testing laboratories at West Coast Checkmark and ICSA Labs.

Technical support
Hopefully, your method of choice for product help will be either via Web or e-mail because Panda doesn't offer phone support--not even for a fee. Norton and McAfee offer phone support, though it's expensive in both cases. Panda tech support answered our e-mail queries within 24 hours, on a par with the response time from the competition. We particularly liked Panda's support wizard, which steps you through the process of creating a tech query. The program's help section includes a handy FAQ, as well as direct links to Panda's support site.

Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0 is a fine virus killer with a clean, uncomplicated interface. It's a good choice for users upgrading from version 6.0, although the $59.95 upgrade price is steep, and upgrades from earlier versions cost $69.95--the same price paid by new customers. However, if you want to keep the antivirus signature files up-to-date, they'll cost anywhere from $7 per month to $108 dollars for 36 months of coverage. Ouch! If you're new to antivirus software, you're better off buying Norton AntiVirus 2003 or McAfee VirusScan 7.0, both of which offer slightly superior scanning tools and better support options.

Panda's Home screen is easy to navigate and nonthreatening for novices.

Downloaded product did not protect me from conficker

Pros: Nothing when it does not protect you from the viruses out there.

Cons: After rebuilding my PC from scratch. I installed the Panda security software and was blown away when my PC got infected again!

Review: I could not reach any security websites and if it wasn't for Spyhunter and their free software to remove conficker virus which I got from my flash card that McAfee stopped from infecting my home PC. Then when I asked for a refund they told me it was after 7 days and they could not give me a refund. Do yourself a favor and get McAfee or Spy Hunter.

Do not use this software

Pros: easy to use

Cons: messes with the computer that is utilizing the software

Review: Do not use Panda software. It really screwed up my computer.
I tried to do a "system restore" to a point before I used their software and I cannot do it. Somehow this software locked me out of doing that.
It also no longer works with windows 98/ME - they just dropped that without notice.

No Support, weak Knowledge base

Pros: Good when it works

Cons: Too Unstable

Review: I have been using Panda products for several years now and in the begining they were sensational. They offered realtime protection and daily updates wheras Norton and Macaffee seemed to be on a more ad hoc basis.Norton and Macaffee also slowed down even the highest spec machines but Panda didn't. However, things have started to go pear shaped for Panda. Expensive in comparison, many faults, ie the need to keep reinstalling. One issue required a Panda update installation that wasn't even passed on to the users, I had to find it through a google search.Publisher Docs are deleted as suspicious when sent as e mail attachments and worst of all is the support which in my experience is nil. I have never had a reply to an e mail and because of no telephone support it is impossible to get any answers. I shall not be upgrading my version next time.

Not at all good

Pros: None that I have found

Cons: Please read my opinion

Review: Purchased in July 2004, renwewd in July 2005.First year not too bad, but once renewed Panda has been nothing but trouble. Major problem with switching user accounts and also id and password identification. I know its Panda because if uninstalled all works well. Customer support is not good either. When I did finally get help I could not understand them

blocks WinXP restore points

Pros: cute Panda icon???

Cons: blocks restore points, won't uninstall

Review: Was trying to do WinXP system restore on a client's PC. Since the Panda icon popped up lower right of screen everytime restore try to run, I uninstalled Panda. Was then able to go to restore point.

BUT...

This, of course, restored Panda as well. After some additional testing decided to go to an even older restore point, but now Panda won't uninstall. It also won't let me reinstall Panda. Also haven't been able to get rid of it using Norton tools.

So now WinXP system restore is totally hosed in addition to Panda installation. Luckily, my first step was to Ghost my starting point. Hopefully, Panda won't block restoring my Ghost image!

it works perfect and i have the product

Pros: it works great on detecting viruses

Cons: it doesnt detect spyware or adware its not suppose to

Review: Ive been reading all these reviews that panda sucks, either you dont know **** about computers or your computer was already ****** up before you got pav.People always saying it doesnt detect spyware or adware you know why it not suppose to did you miss the part that said ANTIVIRUS. Ive had this product over 5 months the first time i got it my computer was already mest up so i had to restore it. then i installed panda and it all been good from then on. One day i did try to unstall it to see what would happen and nothing hapened no crashes i didn't have to restore my computer. I even ran this program on my friends computer and dected 7 trojans that norton missed (he had norton). So my message is that panda is a good ANTIVIRUS.Now if you want a antivirus&anti-spyware then go buy PAV platinum internet security 2005 9.0.This antivirus only codted me $43 if you're wondering and i got it from staples.

Fair product - auful services - disruptive to OS

Pros: Seems to catch the virus

Cons: poor customer service and not good a adaware removal

Review: The product is superior to Norton but also impacts the registry and consequently the OS. I had major problems with memory, paging and activating multiple applications. Shutting down was a frequent issue (in that the system was non-responsive).

Malware was not removed despite repeated attempts.

Customer service seems to be an oxymoron for Panda. It would 3-4 business days to get a written response - each contact was from a different technician who failed to read the history of the problem.

After months of trying to get the product to work, I gave up. I decied to reformated my pc to start with a fresh computer. I will not reload Panda and am now deciding between pc-cillin and zonealarm.

Pros: McAfee copy so it has a familiar interface.

Year Has 365 Dias (Days)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I started using Panda Platinum as a beta tester - I think the price was something like $22.00 for the beta test program. In any case the deal was that after the beta test you would have the full public product for one year. During the beta test I reported problems with the Spanish language on various GUI's - they were never fixed. It was not a "major" issue, but it indicated a lack of attention to "detail" in their products. After the full release I cannot tell you how many times I would have a little pop-up informing me that the program was unable to connect to the "update server". I had to disable the automatic update feature and then do it on a manual basis. At least once or twice a week I would be unable to download updates off the server - even in manual mode. The frequency of this problem is unacceptable. Then came June - a bit over nine months after I joined the beta program. The program is dead in the water - unable to update. I removed the program and picked out elements in the registry and then reinstalled... NOTHING! I came here to look at some reviews and I noticed that someone else had their program die after a similar period and I was left with two alternatives: Send e-mail after e-mail to Pandasoft and waste $70.00 of my time to come up with zip, or I could purchase a program that works. I opted to buy another program that is well regarded on the C/net reviews. As I stated, I purchased this product through the beta program - I really got "sticker shock" when I saw the street price of this software. There is NO WAY that anyone should pay that price for this product! In my opinion Panadasoft COULD produce a good product, but they need to address issues with language localization, update server capacity, and virus definition updates.

Decent Software... Terrible Marketing/Service/Price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Purchased Panda Ver 6.26.02 on Oct.2 2002. Their confirmation of purchase, (Which I printed and saved), stated that my Product and Upgrade expiration was 11/02/03. Imagine my surprise when I went to get my virus updates thru their "Intelligent Upgrades" feature of the software and was shut out. When I asked why, their response was, "Dear Customer,Your subscription expired on 2/11/2003". Ahh, a simple mistake. Obviously someone crossed up the original day and month of expiration. (After all who ever heard of 3 Month, 8 DAY license.) Easy to remedy no? Not to Panda. My next response from them? "Hello, Unfortunately, according to our records, your Platinum license has expired." Meanwhile I discovered they had released a new version (7) less than a month after I purchased ver6.26.02. I read their Confirmation letter again and found the following: "NEW VERSIONS (UPGRADES) 1- INTELLIGENT UPGRADES (Antivirus and Panda Security)", "automatically downloads and incorporates product improvements via the Internet. " I used that very feature numerous times since my purchase, (and after the release of Ver. 7), and therefore should have gotten the upgrade AS STATED, AUTOMATICALLY. Panda's Response? " Dear Customer, You expired. You can not get an upgrade with an expired license. If you want to renew, then you could be upgraded. However, as you never brought up the point of upgrading before you expired, this is really not a matter for a tech support person nor a customer service person to resolve. We can do nothing about this. You simply need to renew, then your license will be upgraded when you renew." They are the ones who use the terms "NEW VERSIONS" and "...automatically downloads and incorporates product improvments", not me and it's obviously not automatic as claimed since they NOW say I had to ASK for my free upgrade. Round and round the mullberry bush and "catch 22" come to mind. After the last response above I called my States Attourney General's office. At their request I have sent a copy of all emails and the original purchase confirmation printout to them at the Consumer Fraud ivision. If you feel like getting jerked around in this way feel free to buy the Panda AntiVirus but you have been warned.

Panda has a promising future!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Better than Mcafee in terms of updates and system stability on my Windows ME system. Trend Micro is not even in the same league, a very inferior and disappointing product. I was looking for a virus/firewall combo that minimized purchase costs and had the smallest impact on system resources. So I got rid of Mcafee (which I hated) and ZoneAlarm (which was an excellent product until they updated it). Very happy with Panda Platinum 7.0

Review: I have been a Norton fanatic for years, however Norton allowed all 3 of my computers to get infected, I am using 2000 and XP it works awesome on both. As for tech support by phone they don?t offer it but they did return my e-mail questions by the next day every time I used it. Panda did a bang up job cleaning up all three computers and stopping other viruses e-mailed from an infected friend. I strongly recommend Panda especially to my friends that need a hands off system. and I do not think it is too expensive.

Dismal customer service!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My actual last correspondence to PANDASOFT says it all: "To whom this may concern, Given my convoluted journey through the Pandasoft organization over the past 4 weeks, I'm not sure, if even now, if I am addressing the right office on this issue, but here it goes... I originally ordered a download version of Panda Platinum 6.0 on November 3, 2002, and to date, after 30 days, sending 15 emails, to at least 6 offices, over 2 continents, I STILL DO NOT HAVE A FULLY FUNCTIONAL VERSION OF THIS PRODUCT! Moreover, during my protracted attempts to resolve my product activation and registration issues, I encountered NUMEROUS systemic problems pertaining to the entire Panasoft organization's approach to customer service! While still attempting to address these issues, I felt compelled to create a detailed account, of the specific systemic problems I encountered during my interaction with the numerous Pandasoft personnel and agencies, that I had been in (or attempted ) contact with (see attached email history). Often, I didn't even receive acknowledgement, that my email inquiries had been received! I had hoped that this information would prove valuable to the Pandasoft organization, as one customer's "real world" assessment of it's functionality, with regard to customer service, but instead, I have yet to receive acknowledgment from someone with the interest, or authority, to deal with such issues. I wasn't even successful, in getting someone from within the Pandasoft organization, to provide me with a suitable referral, to someone of this description. This has gone on for over 4 weeks now, and has resulted in a very unpleasant and frustrating customer service experience. I originally purchased a personal copy of this product, with the intent of evaluating it for possible purchase and implementation by my company, and the 2 other businesses, whose computer systems I administrate. The level of patience I've shown this company, has now reached the point of foolishness on my part. Given Pandasoft's on-going unresponsiveness in this matter, I have no interest in pursuing this goal any further, and demand a full and immediate refund." Overpriced! That's why I don't recommend it.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've tested Panda Platinum 7.02 (PP7.02) with Windows 98 SE and with XP Professional. PP7.02 does what it's supposed to do and disinfected everthing I threw at it. But there were stability and other program campatibility problems with Windows 98 SE. With XP professional, it ran much smoother. However, with the built-in firewall enabled, a noticeable performance hit was observed. Cnet's Review is close to what I observed, but it is a mistake to judge PP7.02 based on past VirusBulletin performance. Those tests are from the previous version. 7.02 features an updated scan engine. Wait for new VirusBulletin submission results before passing judgement.

Not worth the effort.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just about all reviews rate Norton more effective in protecting against viruses. It's really hard to get any support for this product (I believe they are based in Spain) particularly with update/password problems. I used it until I upgraded to WIN XP and couldn't get it to work at all with XP. When other products work just as well or better, and they cost about the same why bother?
