BARCELONA, Spain--Video Discovery is Samsung's new TV guide app that stretches beyond the capabilities of the Smart Remote app Samsung's been including in each of its tablets since it started building them with IR blasters.
Samsung demoed Video Discovery on its new Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet this week at Mobile World Congress. The app includes the type of functionality you'd expect, like universal remote support, social sharing options, and local TV listings, but goes beyond most apps of this type with its powerful and useful search.
Searching for a particular piece of video content returns results sorted by delivery system. In other words, if you search for "Breaking Bad," Video Discovery will show a list of video options like Netflix and VOD. You then choose which one you want to watch.
During a demo at Samsung's booth, I searched for "Rango" and received a list of viewing options. I chose the Netflix option and was taken to the Netflix app, where the movie automatically began to play. The app felt responsive even in a wireless environment like Mobile World Congress.
Video Discovery looks to be a cool and convenient way of accessing content the way you want to. Look for it to debut around the second quarter of this year, near the release of the Galaxy Note 8.0; however, Samsung says the name of the app will likely change before then.
