Creative Labs has done it again. Like its previous top-of-the-line models, the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX boasts a huge selection of multichannel sound-processing capabilities, comprehensive I/O options, a wireless remote, and an over-the-top bundle of software and accessories. But it also adds cutting-edge features, such as a 400Mbps IEEE 1394 port, 24-bit/96KHz digital-audio support, a flexible external I/O box, innovative 3D-gaming capabilities, and a turbocharged digital-sound-processing (DSP) chip that's more than four times faster than earlier models.

The good news for those whose budgets preclude them from owning the Platinum eX is that Creative Labs is offering the same Audigy card in three less expensive packages. The Platinum edition ($199.99 list) requires internal installation of the Audigy Drive in a PC drive bay and comes with a slightly less robust software bundle. Neither the X-Gamer nor the MP3+ version (each sell for $99.99) include the Audigy Drive or the remote control. The X-Gamer software bundle leaves out the Platinum's music-production software, adding Deus Ex instead, while MP3+ offers Beatnik Mixman Studio Remixer and MixMeister Technologies MixMeister 3.0 in lieu of gaming software.

The Audigy Platinum eX package consists of three discrete components joined by a variety of cables and connectors. Its main PCI board provides line in, mic in, and 5.1-channel analog and digital outputs; an Audigy Extension daughterboard adds a joystick/MIDI connector; and the external Audigy Drive I/O module offers aux in, MIDI, and coaxial and optical S/PDIF connectors, as well as headphone and Mic 2 jacks equipped with dedicated volume controls. All three components also include high-speed IEEE 1394 interfaces designed for devices such as camcorders, external CD recorders, MP3 jukeboxes, and other IEEE 1394-networked PCs.

Not surprisingly, installing the Audigy takes some work. The two boards must be connected by multiple ribbon and 1394 cables, plugged into an open power connector, attached to modem and CD- and DVD-audio outputs, then routed to the Audigy Drive with a massive, multiheaded cable. The software installation is fairly straightforward, but it can take quite some time if you choose to load all of the card's many bundled applications, including music-making software such as Sonic Foundry Acid DJ 2.0, Steinberg Cubasis VST, and Image-Line Fruity Loops.

In our hands-on evaluation, the Audigy's DSP generated outstanding MIDI output, boasting 48 channels, 64-voice hardware polyphony, and the ability to load high-resolution samples into an unlimited amount of host memory. Its 32-bit effects engine and true 24-bit, 6-channel digital-to-analog converters (DACs) produced breathtaking sound and low noise levels, and the card was even able to record multiple analog inputs simultaneously. Like earlier Sound Blasters, the Audigy provides a great selection of surround-sound capabilities, including the ability to mix 5.1 channels down to 2, synthesize a huge number of preset acoustic environments, and expand stereo into bona fide multichannel sound. It also offers one-of-a-kind 3D-gaming features such as the ability to render four acoustic environments at once, move and position environments in real time, and create realistic, morphlike transitions between environments.

As terrific as it is, the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX isn't perfect. Despite its complexity and relatively high price, it lacks luxuries such as gamer-friendly front-mounted USB and joystick connectors. Its 24-bit/96KHz audio capabilities work only with devices that are connected to its digital I/O jacks, and the card can record and play files on a PC hard drive at no greater than 48KHz and 16 bits.

But these concerns seem minor in light of the Audigy's formidable strengths. It can't match the flexibility and sonic excellence of dedicated studio equipment, but for a PC sound card, it comes awfully close. If you won't settle for anything less than the state of the art, this is the sound card for you.

Makes life interesting

Pros: Worked pretty much straight out of the box for me. Have it running under XP on a p4 system. I have a pretty expensive motherboard though so maybe that helped.

Cons: Remote seems to really only work through Mediasource, which is the dodgiest piece of **** I've ever used. It barely runs... but if you can get past the poor design and other faults, it all sounds fairly decent.

Nice quality - Shame about the stability.

Pros: Good quality audio (WAV) and MIDI reproduction with their basic ASIO driver. NIce idea sharing PC RAM for sound-fonts.

Cons: OK in Win98 but utterly diabolical stability in XP, and keeps crashing windows XP Pro (supporting dual processor). CL support staff just blame everything else and completely waste your time. Drivers apallingly bad. Bring on the competition!

Great card. No problems yet.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use Windows XP and had absolutely no problems installing the card. Everything seems to work fine. I contacted Creative to ask about problems that I'd heard of from people using this card with XP and they just said disable onboard sound and completely remove the drivers and hardware for any other sound card.

Bellisimo!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Well I love having the ability to hook up my sound card to my stereo via the digitial optical and the remote control is also really nice. I am running this under XP and have no problems with anything. To be honest I had this installed with my computer at Alienware. So if there were any intial setup issuses, I am sure the techs at Alienware made sure it came working. To be honest the sound card is worth $200, its nice enough that some programs are included. Admitley they are mostly lite versions, but Its like being able to sample what you can do. O and did I mention it looks sick? We all know that looks are all that matters.

Have XP Works Fine

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After a lengthy installation process of a few hours, and a couple glitches down the road, I've been able to get this card to work fine in Windows XP. The rest of the setup is ECS Socket 370 FCPGA MB, Nvidia GeForce 2 MX, Pentium III 933MHz, 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub, BroadBand Blaster 8012U DSL, WD Caviar 7200rpm 80GB, WD Caviar 5400rpm 20GB. Quite a few different components, but I was able to get the system to work fine. XP is supported on my SB Audigy, according to the packaging. Nonetheless, Creative Labs absolutely SUCKS when it comes to releasing updated drivers. My DSL modem still doesn't have an XP driver. It's completely inexcusable. If you know what you're doing, you should be able to get this working. If you don't, do not buy this card.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Hello all. I purchased this product yesterday. I can't get the **** thing to work. I have spent 4 and a half hours on the phone with creative tech support and they are saying that I need to reinstall windows. I finally got it to make sound, but then when I try to adjust EAX settings or even mute a device I get the Blue Screen. The all around PC media conectivity Solution!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just picked up the Audigy Platinum EX for a great deal!!! $99 at Comp USA. Good Facts: Cool, Space saving External break-out box with the most usual input types IN and OUT available including high quality DIGITAL inputs and RCA inputs for us who plug in a mixer. Cool Software, full lite versions of just about everything. Recycle, Mixman and FruityLoops included, among many other great titles! FIREWIRE inputs (2)! Plenty of gold plated inputs for everything from a tape player to a full sorround system for your PC. Remote control with control for everything including your browser!. A guy like me that lives without a TV needs a clicker... lol Sweet, quiet sound with decent omph. This is the bad part about it: "As terrific as it is, the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX isn't perfect. " After looking at it and testing it myself i was upset, but for $99 i got the conectivity I wanted. So I am satisfied. Lots of junk software in this package. Do not let winXP install the OS's default driver package. Download the latest update from Creative Labs and use that instead. Blue screens suck. More bad facts: Can take up to two of your PCI slots and they can be prone to interference if placed to close to other PC parts. I havent experienced any problems yet. Lots of sofware... lots of drivers and thingymajeegers... Follow installation instructions down to the T or you will be in for a fun few hours of troubleshooting driver conflicts. Obstrusive software that starts up automatically when you log on on to the PC and likes to hang out on the desktop. I personally don't like it. No DVD player included and no cool DVD features of any sort, yet the sound card is able to play and support DVD related features. Dorky demos and basic instructional mumbo jombo that people who are more technical oriented do not care about... No free phone support. The website is pretty good though! Installation tips: Follow the instructions! Can't stress it enough. I am using XP home edition. BEFORE YOU INSTALL!: Go to the Creative Labs support website and download the specific AUDIGY Platinum EX drivers that are up to date with XP. And save them to a location in your C:/ . Disable and then unistall existing sound card from My Computer's *Device Manager* and physically remove as described in instructions. Some computers do not have a PCI slot sound card, they have the sound card on the mother board, you must disable any motherboard embedded sound devices from the Setup/BIOS screen by pressing "Del" or F8 when the PC begins to load up. Be careful to not screw around with other sensitive settings here! Save settings in the Setup screen and PC will restart. Just let windows load and make sure you browse aorund your windows environment for a few minutes to make sure your PC is still satble after removing the old card/drivers. You should have no sound on speakers nor headphones but everything else should work OK. THEN shut down and: 1. Install all hardware as described. 2. Start Windows 3. Stop any driver installation wizards. NOT THE HARDWARE INSTALLATION PROCEDURES! 4. Run the CD installation included with the unit and restart the PC after the LENGTHY process. 5. Setup will prompt you to restart. DO IT! 6. Reboot and make sure your sound is on. Don't mess with anything yet! PC may not be stable at this point... 7. Run the setup file you downloaded from Creative Labs and follow the exact instructions. These are THE GOOD DRIVERS which will keep you from getting blue screens and such. (It happened to me). Original drivers will be replaced with the ones from this file. 8. Reboot and configure the card to your hearts content. You have a lot to look at, so schedule some time for this. Once you know what junk you don't want, go to the Add and Remove sofwtare wizard and prompt the removal of the Audigy card, THE CARD WILL NOT BE REMOVED UNLESS YOU CHOOSE TO. All of the software items and programs installed will be displayed first and you will be able to pick what you want to get rid off. You are done! Enjoy.

Life-draining Nightmare Installation

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This card has the potential to kickass bigstyle but thanks to the utterly evil installation that I've been struggling with for the last seven days I simply can't reccomend it at all. The one time I got it working (by taking out every other card on my pc, disabling just about everything built into my mobo and setting up my Geforce as a default graphics card) it sounded awesome, but if you can't use anything else on your computer than it just isn't worth it.

Horrible support from CL

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The external box on my Audigy Platinum eX does not work. Creative labs has no useful information on thier site. CL does not provide a reasonable method for driver download (they use an incompatible "queueing" feature that breaks for people who do not allow popups on thier system). CL does not provide drivers supporting current OS patch levels in a reasonable ammount of time. Their most recent drivers do not support Windows XP SP1, so a user is forced to choose between eliminating unacceptable bugs in the previous drivers, OR upgrading thier OS and eliminating security bugs. CL is clearly resting on their laurels, expecting to sell cards on reputation, without providing actual service. I will never buy from them again.

If you have XP and games, dont buy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: More than a year after XP this product still comes without XP drivers. You have to download your own, and you have to go to the Creative Web site to get any info on installing them. Installation of XP drivers crashed frequently and often. Took 5 tries to get them to load over the default drivers. Then it turns out that the bios in my 2.0 gig Dell is incompatible with Audigy. Found this out from Dell when running AudioHQ kept crashing machine. Got new bios loaded, now card works, but none of my games or my children's games that use EAX would run any longer. The Ubisoft and EA website gave some general issues to try, but nothing work. After wasting a weekend plus, I removed the card, reinstalled SB Live 5.1 and now everything works. My guess card works great if you have 98 and maybe ME, but not with XP. From my perspective, Creative is seriously remiss in not providing XP drivers at this point with the card, plus details on loading and getting them to run. A year is enough time. But when you are the only player, you can be like Microsoft who is now getting endless messages from my machine as to why it crashed when trying to this to run. In every case it sent a file called "appcompat.txt". My guess is it was tell MSFT that I was trying to run something that wasn't compatible.

XP operating system works fine now

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I too have had problems with this card under xp. the most persistent problem was getting the play centre to work properly. Oddly enough by setting all audio files to a default of Windows media player then opening the play centre I have no problems. I also had major problems with hangs and crashes at first. there was a conflict with my video card a radeon 8500. Updating the radeon drivers with this file MMC-7-7-0-1-noDVD.exe solved that problem. As for the problems with creative updating their drivers for XP the problem is not so much that of creatives but rather one that Microsoft needs to deal with. Creative needs to alter some xp operating system source code in order to have a driver that works under all circumstances. But Microsoft will not allow them to do so. Whether this is over $$$ or politics who knows. i just know that Creative is quite innovative and truly one of the few companies that have a genuine interest in customer support. They will work it out

Are you willing to take a pricey risk?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Yes, I'm running XP and yes I finally got the card to work. The problem seems to concern the drivers, the software and the IRQ settings. It took a few days of trying various settings and other tweaks to finally come up with the right ones. Creative tech support was of absolutely no help whatsoever. The emails back and forth got to be ridiculous. None of their suggestions worked and to date I still can’t run the Creative Playcenter without crashing my system (a P4 System). Actually uninstalling playcenter helped to get the card working correctly. I do want to mention that they did respond promptly. This is not a card for the novice computer user. If your lucky, it may work right out of the box or it may be a nightmare to install and troubleshoot. It all depends on your system hardware and OS.

To hell with creative

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Remember the SBlive? before you drop a dime on the Audigy card let me tell you what Creative did to us. once upon a time their was a companey called aureal who with the help of A3D with was developed by NASSA and made true to life 3D sound enviorments a reality witch put creatives EAX to shame. Creative did not like this so they hit them with a bougus law sute an said that they stole technolegy from them. Creative lost their bogus case but the small companey was so devistated by the finatial leagal burduns that they filed for bankrupsy and were eventualy taken over by creative :( The EMU10K processor on the SBLive card was axualy a programable 100MHZ CPU. witch if you know anything about computing you would know thats a hell of alot of power for a sound card. Creative continuesly talked about how we would not have to upgrade to a new sound card because it was programable. but so far creative had on major upgrades except one that the sblive users could not upgrade to "EAX ADVANCED HD" we sblive users were promised EAX 3.0 but we never got it, instead creative made a new EAX and got the Sound Blaster Audigy to power it but Their is no doubt in my mind that this is nothing more than EAX 3.0 on a new card. and the bottom line is that we SBLIVE users are still on EAX 2.0 after 3 Freaking years! http://www.3dsoundsurge.com/press/pr112.html We got left behind big time, just take a look at the date on our drivers! their has not been a new driver since 2000! and its a BS one at that! but its ok i have it all to do over again so if your like me and you love your MP3's sound is your main consern first off "don't beleave the hype" forget about creative its only a 16 bit card that just sounds OK. you should not settel for nothing less than a 32bit card trust me your ears will thank you. and as for EAX API forget it, don't let them sucker you in its not all that good. I recomend looking elseware for a better sounding card with A3D its still a major player.

If You Run XP, Don't Even Bother With This Mess

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried everything I could and even consulted some of my computer pro friends, and this card simply doesn't work under XP. The patches and "fixes" Creative Labs supplied on their web site only made things worse. Probably the most annoying problem with this card is it locks up the system and emits a shrieking noise fom the speakers about every 15 minutes or so. If you're looking for optical i/o (as I was), go for the Hercules Fortissimo GameSurround II. Not only is it a proudly Canadian company, but it's also very affordable at about $80 CDN.

Considering its price its on the high end of cards, but its worth every penny.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I’ve been a creative sound card user since the Live! Series came out, and ever since then I have moved on to mixing music on a armature level and made a few CD’s and engineered some media for various little projects. The creative line has always been helpful not so much because of the hardware (don’t get my wrong, Sound Fonts are a gold mine and EAX as well) but due to the overall package, software and hardware. Creative soundcards are the only cards that offer truly meaningful software programs with the flavor of the card that suites you. Gamers would go with the Xgamer while audio editing enthusiasts would chose the platinum. In each “flavor” your going for a complete package of software and hardware, which so far has gone unbeaten as a combo. Blaster Audigy Platinum eX was the next card I bought after the Live and though it is a bit pricier that your run of the mill card it does offer the necessary hardware, software and audio inputs I need to simulate a digital studio. Keeping the seriously technical jargon aside the card is well valued and offers a host of options for would be DJ’s and composers. If your not into audio and/or media id recommend you stick with the entry level Audigy card and save the cash.

The best you can get

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It was pricey but this thing has all the features you could possible dream of having in a sound card. I read about the problems some people were having with it before I bought it, but decided to buy it anyway and take it back if I had problems. It probably conflicts with some people's hardware. If you want to get it but aren't sure because of the stories of people having problems with it, just go out and buy it and try it out, if it doesn't work you can always just take it back to the store. (Make sure you ask the store before you buy it if you could just bring it back if it doesn't work properly)

Top Quality "the most unstable card????"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Top quality card. Yes it does work in XP, it is just that the other guy can't get it to. Yes it does use a few IRQs, what do you expect with all that stuff on it. I had IRQ probs after fitting a new NIC, but managed to fix them. the problem wouldn't have occured if, I had less equipment in my machine, used a different NIC or installed the NIC before sound card. Is that the fault of Creative or the NIC manufacturer???

Re submit Audigy evaluation

Pros:

Cons:

Review: In March 2002 I gave this card the thumbs down after two months of trying to get this Audigy up and running in my self built AthlonXP PC. I suspected the Audigy but Creative had me trying everything - including Bios changes and complete reinstallation, with instructions to load the myriads of software one programme at a time followed by a reboot(this takes hours). Finally after a dozen emails with two days turnround for each reply I decided to take the expensive option and call by telephone. After thirty high priced minutes I was told I could return the whole package(yes I kept all my packaging) to Dublin Ireland. It cost me £10.00 but they found a fault on the Daughter Board and replaced the board. Creative paid the return postage and after delivery and yet another reinstallation(lost count how many times now) the Audigy finally does what I paid for. But really - nearly four months to get satisfaction from a fault that was not mine and had me stipping out my carefully built little piece of pride and self-esteem. Plus my family had to take my manic ravings and my prolific chain linked swearing and they're now familiar with computer jargon because I ranted on about what I'd added, removed and trash canned. So to put the record straight NOW my Audgiy works!

It's just a sound card!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Don't understand how a simple sound card installation is such a "stressful" thing. This card has by far the best sound quality I have ever heard from a PC. After reading through these reviews I come to understand why people like me will always be gainfully employed. People need to try to understand basic concepts of PC architecture or put away the screwdriver. I think the biggest problem is buying PC's off the shelf. Never had any respect for the junk they try to push off on the general public. Build your own and get what you want. Format your drives and load only what you want/need. That'll clear up your problems

The most powerful sound card in the WORLD!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This sound card could not get any better. If you are unsatisfied with the quality of your speakers, don't get rid of them til you get the Audigy. It'll blow you away, it really brings out what your speakers can really do, and the clairty is unbelieveable. This is must have for anyone who listens to ANYTHING on their computer.

if you want the best in sound, go for it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm currently running the audigy ex under win xp and have had no problems. The install could be tricky for novice users, but otherwise it goes in quickly. Loaded with great features and software this soundcard has it all. Great bang for your buck.

What installation?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After trying absolutely everything and spending 5 hours on the phone to Creative tech support, I've had it. The software will not install and my PC hangs every time. Creative's final resolution: "Gee, we've never seen anything like this. You might want to see what the return policy is where you bought it." Check around on the web before you buy.

great card, hard work, no help

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i have a dell dimension 8200 with windows xp. i got the famous squeal and lock up. I was scared. Evenetualy i found a bios upgrade, info about this is at creatives site but hard to find. downloaded udate from dell. lots of compaints on web sites about creatives lack of support. i never had to call them so i dont know. xp drivers update are on web site not in package. (this is mentioned in package) lots of people are having xp problems with this card and dont know about fixes! Front panel connections are great, how did we ever live without them? i use spdif to record guitar on a coaxial cable, no fuss and works great. Worth the effort but took 3 days and a lot of stress to get it going. great for midi. this card is a powerhouse! Nothing else like it for the money.

THIS CARD SUCKS!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Do not buy this card. Go with a Turtle Beach card or the Audiophile by M-Audio. Creative is blaming everything on your PC's BIOS settings and that it is NOT their problem. If you want to throw away $200, then buy it.

Great product, poor driver support

Pros:

external drive temperamental

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Installed onto Asus A7V266-E motherboard in self built AthlonXP 1800 PC. I get no audio cd player through the Sound Blaster, yet windows Media Player works fine, no remote controler usage - the system tells me it's not installed. Finally no active external drive usage, all dead spdif, aux, line in/out, headphones etc. It's either the Asus or SB system. Going to have to strip and rebuild the sound board system and remove all drivers and traces of Creative software - then try an update of Bios and Via chipsets on the Asus. I suspect the SB but could be down to bad Bios IRQ's.

Great performer

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The first thing to do is to UNINSTALL ALL audio systens and audio software currently on your computer. Install the eX and re-boot; only then, re-install your other stuff. I guarantee you will have a perfect install if you do it this way. It is high priced for what you get, but if you want almost studio-perfect audio at an affordable price, this is it. Many higher priced/pro equipment is not as flexible as this unit--there-in is your real value!

high price.... but a good thing

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am in the eternal process of building a video editing system arround the Matrox RT2500/G550, and this card. those are the only three things in the system.... and it's just amazing. having a real breakout box is a really good feature to have. it allows it to move arround a little, and to get your input devices AWAY from the evil radio interference that your computer puts out. and having firewire in a place that is accessable is also a nice thing to have. all of the inputs seem to be working more than well. some of the cleanest annalog reccording that I have really done. annother nice thing about it is the stability. when you run a system that dosn't do what normal computers are supposed to do (like play basic games, surf the internet, do homework, etc.) then you run into a lot of problems. but I have had NO problems running the sound blaster audigy (except for when I was still running win 98 which is not supported.... even then the only thing that didnt work right was the fire wire). the one time that it did have a problem then it asked me to put in the CD, which I promptly did, and then it fixed it's self. the only real problems that I do have with it (because I'm running a specialized system) is all of the junk software that came with it. speciffically the demos. there is nothing wrong with them.... I just think that they spent too much time on them and could have saved us some of the price by not putting them on the CD. (thus reflected on the features score). it's a really good card, clean I/O, and works beautifully. I give it an enthusiastic thumbs up!

Easy to Install but hard for newbies to use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a true audiophile to the word, I have spent way too much money on components for my home theatre and computer but this was one purchase that was well worth it. The whole process of installing the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX took me about 15-20 min. but settign it up to my specs too a bit longer. One warning though if all your going to do with this card is listen to music and nothing else get another card this thing is more than you need but if your like me and your computer resembles a theatre then this is the card for you. I have read complaints from other reviewers and they complain of problems like squealing and crashing, I have not experienced these problems yet only the pain of setup and configuration. I am running a P4 2.2Ghz[Northwood],1GB PC 800 RdRam, 1 IBM 120 GB hd and another IBM 60gb, with a Visiontek Gforce4 64mb DDRRAM, 32x10x40 cdrw and a Sony DVD-RW Drive. I have yet to have problems.

The most unstable sound card ever!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This card doesn't work under XP. It messes with your IRQ settings and will not work with APCI. Most of the software is bargain based lite versions that you can't even efficiently use. I couldn't get the dolby digital to work with my midiland system either! Creative refuses to update drivers for any of its Audigy Cards. Check around at some creative newsgroups and you will understand what we are talking about!

no 24/96

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you want sound quality get an Echo Mia sound card. Not as many bells and whistles but then it offers better sound. Also, don't judge these "better" cards with cheap amps and speakers. In order to really judge them you must spring for audiophile or professional studio stuff, something in the order of kilobucks, because 24/96 cards do have the resolution to shine in such systems.

Been trying for 3 days

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If I ever get it to work on Win XP with logitech cordless optical mouse and keyboard, I'll let ya know. Meanwhile I have no idea how well it actually works other than great at the squeal of death. Maybe I'm the idiot, but for over $200 I expect something that is at least moderately simple to install on common equipment. Unless you have plenty of free time or an older computer - look elsewhere before you sink a hefty chunk of change into this sloppy product.

Great product, so-so support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I love the fire-wire front and rear as well as the whole live-drive concept. Multi-track ability for musicians would be perfect. Installation was not too difficult, but the manual pictures were sometimes misleading. Luckily, the connectors only have one possible comination. Thoe hardware is flaw-free and it includes plenty of software. Getting WinXP support for any Creative product is slow in coming and often not complete. i.e. The PS2 playstation (not Nintendo) support is gone from the web and it still isn't compatible with their own Oozic player under XP. I'm still waiting for a response.

This is more like a beta card!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all it is not possible to achieve Dolby digital 5.1 if you have the following speakers: Midiland 8200, Klipsch 5.1, Any Logitech speakers, and anything else except creative inspire speakers. I can't believe people are actually buying this. There is zero compatibility with Windows XP Home or Pro. It doesn't work with Logitech I-touch software, and the EAX HD doesn't even make a difference. I suggest you go to some newsgroups and check out all of the problems that others are having also. Don't depend on Creative for any support either! The biggest problem is if you play music with the included Playcenter, Windows Media Player, Real One Player, or Win Amp the computer will totally freeze and emit a loud squealing sound. ***? This card is ridiculous and I cannot believe all of the money I spent on this piece of trash. The only other card I have used is the Santa Cruz and it is extremely stable with plenty of good features. Please don't buy this card!

Cool Idea - But It Has Some Quirks

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am using a slightly older 350 MHz processor which still exceeds the minimum requirements for the Audigy, but I often get some clicks, pops, and occasionally choppy sound. In that regard, my old $30 sound card did a better job. There is almost no support for this product on Creative's web site. One other thing - if you install the Firenet software, the IRQ that is used may conflict with your other network card if you have one. I don't have an IRQ to spare.

Big Bada Boom!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just have gotten this system in. It took a little while to install the card, but hey, it's worth all the fuss. This card is simply the best sound card you can get for the home user. I mean I've seen 20,000-dollar sound cards for professional companies. I bought this card, and a brand new speaker system, with little knowledge of sound systems and cards. I saw one day searching the Internet for speakers, the brand new Klipsch 5.1 Promedia system. After reading a lot of information and reviews, I realized that this was the best speaker system for a computer you could buy. Then I wanted to get the best sound card for it, especially one that supported an optical digital out, as I did not buy my 1.5ghz computer with a dvd-rom on it. I'm using a Sony dvd player that’s for my flat screen hi-res. TV. The external box is great. I can hook up my DVD player and almost anything else to my computer speaker system now. I wouldn't go with any other card out there that supports 5.1 speakers. First, it has a built in digital decoder, and second, it supports the 5.1 speaker set-up to the fullest, filling in all the sound gaps that other 5.1 cards leave out. I highly recommend getting the Audigy eX sound card ($206.00) and the new Klipsch Promedia 5.1 computer speaker system ($400.00) if you have the money to spend. If not, just go for creative labs new 5.1 speaker system, I’m sure it’s decent.

Worth the Current Price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I found it less cumbersome to install than people described here -- just join the cards together with the cables before snapping them in, and it's no big deal. Had no problems on Win98 with an Athlon 950 on a K7-style board (have your CMOS board settings correct in setup). The sound is as described by other posters here - amazing. Really could tell the difference on the first wav music file I played. I'm using Cakewalk to record multi-track audio, and I'm very pleased with the results. The RCA inputs on the external unit are perfect (in fact, all the inputs on the unit are perfect), and it's nice to not have to go to the back of the computer with mini-dins anymore. Take your time during install, and check all your CMOS settings in setup before launching Windows, and you'll probably have no trouble with the install. I think the problems people have been having are related to onboard default sound settings that they're not familiar with. Finally, a great card for making music that's made by a large company with a good reputation for compatability and quality (haven't had to try the support though!). PS The software bundle is pretty nice.
